Community art

May 25, 2007

Yesterday there was a little panel discussion about community art. Made me think. Community Art is a way of approching society, a way of involving instead of creating a distance. It doesn’t have the Western concept of “high art” and “low art”, artist and maker, process and result. It is a new way of placing arts back in society, giving it social relevance, instead of emphasizing post-WWII terms as “audiences are suspect” and “Art for art’s sake”.

A good example is the AACM, one of the first “arts” movements which also involved the crowd. Quite interesting is the vision from Ekow Eshun.
Need to think on this.
