The Night of the Unexpected

August 27, 2009

A one night festival crosscutting a variety of musical styles and boundaries.

The Night of the Unexpected
Friday 11 September 20.30 hours
Paradiso, Amsterdam, the Netherlands

With Pan Sonic, Talibam!, Knalpot, Wilbert Bulsink and Thomas Myrmel, Lunapark, Andre Avelas Octet, Yu Tao, Sensational and Spectre, Huba de Graaff, Amsterdams Bach Consort, Los Siquicos Litoralenos, Jan-Bas Bollen, Robin Hayward and Martijn Tellinga, Steve Shaw.

And with works of Luigi Nono, Brian Eno, Aphex Twin and others

The Night of the Unexpected focuses on new developments in contemporary music. In a tightly directed succession, the program cross-cuts through styles and genres, varying from experimental beats and electronics to composed repertoire and conceptual pop music.

The Finnish Pan Sonic, comprising of Mika Vainio and Ilpo Väisänen, have made name with their seemingly mechanical, immersive electronic music.

Talibam! is a highly energetic improvisation duo from the US whose percussion & drum explosions launch into the stratosphere. A musical answer to the War on Terror. All out noise-rock and free-jazz.

Post-prae-ludium No.1 “per Donau” is a work for tuba and elektronica by the Italian composer Luigi Nono. The piece will be performed by Robin Hayward and Martijn Tellinga.

The Amsterdam based Knalpot is an upcoming band, producing energetically grooving music in which dance, rock and jazz meet in an exciting way.

A part of the composition Pigeonhouse of Wilbert Bulsink and Thomas Myrmel, based on musical interpretations of the speaking voice, will be performed. Bulsink and Myrmel, both emerging talents, earlier created the Expected, an authentic music theatrical performance in collaboration with film maker Karen Cytter.

Ciel Démandé of the Chinese composer Yu Tao is selected by the jury of the International Gaudeamus Music Week as one of the nominees for the Gaudeamus Music Prize. A work for pipa, percussion and electronica with a theatrical staging.

From the badlands of Argentinia, the highly authentic group Los Siquicos Litoralenos has emerged, integrating influences of Captain Beefheart, cumbia, lo-fi tape manipulation, noise and South-American folk in their Argentinian rural music. On stage, their structured improvisations often look like a trash version of a Pink Floyd show.

Three Variations On The Canon By Johann Pachelbel of Brian Eno, founder of Ambient music,  will be performed by Lunapark. This brand new ensemble directed by composer Anthony Fiumara and percussionist / composer Arnold Marinissen will also be performing arrangements of ambient works by Aphex Twin.

Eight musicians, positioned in a circle, each play an instrument built by the artist Andre Avelas. With singular, piercing electronic sounds a conceptual and spacial composition by Koen Nutters will be performed in which the various sounds will compliment each other and then disintegrate.

The Amsterdams Bach Consort will sing parts from the Psalmenrequiem of Daan Manneke from the balcony of Paradiso.

The combinaton of the apocalyptic hyperdub of Spectre and the rough edged, rudimentary but soulful rhymes of Sensational are seldomly predictable. Spectre, the man behind the famous Wordsound label, was one of the originators of the Illbient, a style to which also DJ Spooky was related.

Jury member of the Music Week, Huba de Graaff wrote the music for the “surveillance opera” Diepvlees, from which a fragment, originally cut from the final version will now be performed.

PulseFF is a spacial installation by Jan-Bas Bollen. More than 30 loudspeakers with led-lights mounted on them, are positioned across the space. The visitor enters a space of moving sound and light.

In the cellar of Paradiso, there’ll be an afterparty with music by DJ’s Steve Shaw, Andre Avelas and Koen Nutters.
