What can I say? I was 17, a senior in high school in the turbulent year 1968. Life was exciting, dangerous, cool. My chick bought this weird album "Vincebus Eruptum" --- I listened to it, hated it, told her never to play it in my presence. Six months later I put it on again, loved it ! Got the 8-track, the only one I ever played in my hippie black Volkswagen, cranked up all the way. Then came OutsideInside --- the only TRUE acid rock. Dickie Peterson invented heavy rock -- a true pioneer in every sense of the word. It really hurt when I heard of his passing. But...he rocks on ! Blue Cheer forever !!

Heartbreaking to hear that Dickie is gone. Like one of my oldest friends. I finally got to see them in 2006 with my son and stepson. He was sick as a dog with a bad cold but put on an incredible show. I sadly did not get to shake his hand and thank him for teaching me to play bass, and all the great times I had listening to him play since 1969. My best to all his family and thank you brother Dickie!

Now THAT IS what I call an interesting take on this subject. What I would suggest though is speaking to other people actively involved in the scene and bring to day any other points of view and then update or create a new post for us to read. I hope you'll take my ideas, I'm looking forward to it! Try to cover off on some graffiti characters as well if you can, they're very popular at the moment.

I first saw Blue Cheer in 1968 in Hawaii. I could not believe the line up of Marshall amps and then they came on. He changed how I played bass. Up until that point I had held my bass up high like a lot of English bass players did in that time period.

I saw him and how cool he looked with a low slung bass and that was how it was for me to this day. He along with Jack Cassidy and Berry Oakley defined how I learned to play the bass and present myself on stage. I saw them several more times in the next two years and was never disappointed.

I saw a reincarnation of Blue Cheer at a club in Hollywood back around 1990 or so. And it just wasn't the same, BUT I got his and Paul's autograph on Vincebus Eruptum

I was blown away when I heard of his death last year. I had kept hoping that Blue Cheer would come back to CA.

A real pioneer...R.I.P. and the next time I am up in the Redwoods, I'll be talking to ya!

My condolences to all the family. Finally got to see Blue Cheer live two years ago at the Magic Bag. That had to be one of the best shows I ever saw. Went with my daughter and son in law, who are now big fans, and at the end of the show my daughter got to shake Dickie's hand. Its a shame to hear that he died of prostate cancer, as I am a prostate cancer survivor. It truly is a great loss to my music world and to anyone who loved the Blue Cheer.

someone left me a message today to say that they were looking at graffiti on an alley wall in the mission and someone had written "RIP Dickie Peterson, Blue Cheer forever" and she said, "wow those were the days, weren't they?" and I thought...Wh-a-a-t?? I last saw Dickie at Chet Helm's memorial in GGPark 2 years ago? and he looked the same as he did 25 years ago, except maybe a little bit older, but sounded just the same. Really sorry to say goodbye to a sweet, kind soul, and a granddaddy of heavy metal/ clang n bang/ rock. Hope it's as loud as you like it in the afterlife. Love to you, Marilyn and Corrina....lot of years have passed.

Dickie Peterson was TRUE GRIT. I am still reeling from the loss. He will never be as appreciated as he should be. This man was an amazing human being and talented individual. I am one of the lucky people that had the awesome opportunity to spend time with him in his last decade of life. I will forever be affected by his advice, outlook, and his love. I can still hear him laughing... he did that lots. He truly was , and IS, bigger than life.

I was crushed today when I got my new Goldmine mag. to find out Dickie had died. I'm 58 and have followed BC through all these years and changes. Truly the only band of their kind. Anything else is just a cheap substitute! I've got everything they've ever officially released on vinyl & CD...+ Dickie's 2 solos...Not to mention "MANY" unofficial items.Learned my first drum licks from Paul's Blue Cheer Licks. What Now! I'll miss you Dickie...Rock On!!!

Always really loved only ONE metal band and that's Blue Cheer. They simply invented hard rock. Was lucky to have the chance to tell Dickie in person I always loved his music after a show in Belgium last year, when he came to the bar to have a drink.
What a loss. Love to Marilyn and Corrina, the family and the other fantastic Blue Cheer musicians.

i saw blue cheer in toronto in 2007. dickie made a little speech during "roadhouse blues" telling us that in order to keep rockin' we all must make a serious effort, on a daily basis, to do something to help a brother or sister-after the show i had the privilege of meeting him and told him i liked his speech. he replied "that's my creed". i was struck by his kindness to my friends and me. from that day on i have thought about his speech every day and though i can't always live up to it, i know that dickie peterson made me a better person. R.I.P. Dickie

Marilyn,

I live next door to your daughter Corrina and her husband Andre and grandson in Fort Worth, Texas. Your daughter is the one who got me into Blue Cheer. Im so sorry to hear about your loss. A great person and a great rock icon has been lost. He will be dearly missed. RIP Dickie

Sorry to see a true pioneer leave us. I remember the first time I heard "Summertime Blues" by the Cheer. Blew me away. I remember my drummer at the time saying "God it sounds like everything is cranked to 10 plus". Yeah it was that heavy. R.I.P brother we loved your music and always will.

Aloha. just wanted to correct some factoids and expand a bit.
Dicki (Richard Allan Peterson) was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota in 1946. He was 63 years old on September 12.

Dicki was instrumental in bringing musicians and friends together throughout his life and he will be greatly missed.

Dicki was a gentle soul. We had a beautiful daughter, Corrina Peterson Kaltenrieder, who is age 36. Corrina and has recently retired from her career as a talented ballet dancer. Dicki has a grandson, age 6 who loves music.

I saw Dickie and the boys perform at the Magic Bag in Ferndale, MI. back in November 2007; it was a great show and I was hoping they would come back real soon because I thought they ROCKED! big time; but sadly, that's not going to happen now because Dickie was the whole heart and soul of that band. R.I.P. Dickie

Very sad news! I spent a very good time with him, playing guitar on the "Child of the darkness" - album. He had a great sense of humour and told me funny and interesting stories about the summer of love in San Francisco. I´m very glad that I met him, he was such a nice person - RIP Dickie!!!
