Transmediale Report (Day 1)

At a Sunday afternoon I’m looking for Siegesäule and suddenly it looks like Egypt has won the Afrika cup. Cars with green and white flags are driving around an blowing their horns. After a while they are joined by cars with red/green flags carefully constructed to their window. Might the final be a draw? Impossible. This is too tight, organized and clean for African euphoria. It looks like the minimal aesthetics by Ilpo Vaisanen, 
Mika Vainio
 (from Pan Sonic fame) and Staalplaat Soundsystem I was looking for.

They’ve created a new work for Berlin Mobile Carphonic Orchestra playing synched sound-patterns and driving a carefully choreographed route around the roundabout of the Siegessäule for a period. While people are still clubbing to death in Berghain
these guys decided to create some boring and overintellectual conceptual performance stuff. It’s conceptual but is missing the poetics of the Tati roundabout in Playtime or the excitement of contemporary urban life. Looks like some nineties pioneers are trying to find a way in contemporary days. But they seem to be driving circles.

The upcoming days I’ll be blogging from Transmediale, a media festival where I will do a small talk on the Social Festival Model by Incubate. Yesterday I’ve heard the talk will be live translated to German. I always want that! Hope I can hire these guys in the future. Being in Berlin is also a good oppurtunity to check out some stuff and see how other festivals do it. Performances by Dan Deacon, Daniel Haaksman, Keji Haino and currywurst everywhere are a good reason to enjoy the town.

It’s seven in the morning and Dj Manaia is driving us crazy. He’s firing electro and mash ups in a kuduro style. Combining a metal feeling plus volume. Raw and full of energy played in a way never heard before. This is why I want to dance. This bliss and effervescence makes everything sparkling.
Manaia is from Portugal. He has remixed Buraka Som Sistema and collaborated with Deize Tigrona. Would be an excellent pick for Generation Bass.

Berlin has a special approach to nightlife. Everything’s starting very, very late. Incubate alumni Schlachthofbronx blew their horns at 5.45 though WMF is not that packed any more. Something like 300 people seem to be in the club, all getting fired up by Schlachthofbronx. They are funny guys, creating some combination of German and Brazilian carnival mixed with electro you might call Bayern Funk. I think their combination of horns and hornyness will blow up every festival and club this summer. The enthousiasm of the dj’s and the openness of the sound is working very very well, especially if you compare it with Sinden and Drop The Lime who played earlier. Their way of playing Baltmimore, house and rave is more moving to the dynamics of trance. Music for drugged up guys who are dancing with their shoulders and want the breaks to put their hands up for whatever. A new kind of Big Beat. No funk. No feeling. Only effects. I think soon there will be a Dutch king in this genre. Living in Dronten, making it even more cheesy and bringing it to the stadium.

Compared to the clubby trancy sound of Sinden and Drop The Lime acts like Manaia, Schlachthofbronx and Ku Bo & Joyce Muniz seem to be more for open, funny and, uhm, for the ladies. Ku Bo & Joyce Muniz are a live act, a male producer and a female singer. Brazilian music, African beats, voodoo elements and the bass for the ladies. It’s something like small version of Buraka going dancehall. The show started messy with not the best sound and a small audience. But if they develop their act and they are booked later in nights this might be an ideal club acts. This nightlife keeps me too fuzzy for the concerence program. Will keep you updated!
