Punk in Africa is a feature length documentary currently in the making by a team of African and Czech documentary makers. The film will focus on the role of punk music, style and subcultures in the political and social upheavals in Africa at the end of the 20th century. Punk in general has often been politically engaged. In Africa this might be even more so than anywhere else. Not only does the film contain rare footage of the first South African mixed-race anti-apartheid band National Wake and African 70’s punk bands Wild Youth and Asylum Kids, it also covers Africa’s contemporary punk scene with bands like Swivel Foot and Hog Hoggidy Hog. Focussing not only on punk music and subcultures but also on the social and political backgrounds from which these musicians get their drive, this documentary promises to offer a very interesting and different take on punk music and culture. The film is expected to be released within several months so keep an eye out for it and in the meanwhile watch this trailer below.
