[inQ&A] Cheapmachines

June 21, 2010

Only three more months until Incubate 2010. For the past few months we’ve been announcing new artists every week. But with 200 + artists coming up in September we can imagine you losing your hold. That’s why we compiled the Incubate 2010 Spotify playlist (http://incu.at/spotify). Subscribing to this playlist will get you acquainted with most of the Incubate 2010 bands.

Apart from their music, part of the getting-to-know-them-better-proces will also be us asking some of the artists a few questions in the upcoming months. The nineteenth edition in a series:

Cheapmachines

1.Can you please introduce yourself?
Phil Julian, I have been actively involved in experimental/noise since around 1997 with performances and releases issued under the name Cheapmachines (and more recently under my own name).  Currently living and working in London. More here.

2.Where are you at the moment?
OS X (Eastings)       533802
OS Y (Northings)     168642
Country                    United Kingdom
City                           London
Nearest Post Code   SE25 6BS
Lat (WGS84)             N51:24:04 (51.401036)
Long (WGS84)          W0:04:40 (-0.077900)

3.Have you played in the Netherlands before and if so, what’s your view on or experience with the scene you’re operating in in The Netherlands?
Never, but very much looking forward to doing so.  It seems that the experimental/noise scene in the Netherlands is strong; certainly there seems to be a good network of Dutch artists performing and labels releasing experimental works.

4.What can we expect of your gig at the Incubate Festival?

Electronic drones, noise and silence.  Some (and quite possibly all) of these things.

5.What are your plans for the (near) future?
New releases are pencilled in with Harbinger Sound, Entr’acte and Banned Productions along with a possible reissue of an older release, remastered with additional material.  No dates for any of this at present, hopefully most of it before the end of 2010.  Also working on various collaborative mixes and masters for other people, most of which I can’t discuss at present…
