It’s like watching Little Britain on acid… Incubate is very excited to bring you a selection of videoworks by Ryan Trecartin (1981, Webster, Texas).

Ryan Trecartin stars as the suicidal gay teen ‘ Skippy’ in his 2004 camp extravaganza videowork called ‘A Family Finds Entertainment’.
Ryan Trecartin is one of the hottest new multimedia artists of the youtube generation. Not only has he been rewarded with the 150.000$ Jack Wolgin prize for having the most artistic excellence on an international level in 2009, Trecartin’s work and installations are shown in the most influential museums and art galleries all over the world.
Trecartin’s video’s are confrontational with his crazy personal vision on contemporary culture. In a pretty unique blend of video, internet, television, performance, digital technology and sound, Trecartin comes up with his own new mode of the medium. It’s not surprising that the Wall Street Journal has called him one of the ten top emerging US artists in 2006 and that he was the Guggenheim Museum’s artist of the year 2009.
Ryan Trecartin: I love the net, always and I’m highly influenced and affected by the ways in which people communicate and talk. Phones? Tv? Internet? Body language!
Trecartin directs, films and often stars in his video’s alongside his family and friends creating weird yet strangely familiar bright colourful and hysterical scenarios of young people… doing whatever young people do these days.
Being influenced by youtube, reality tv, videogames and consumer culture Trecartin shows us a world in which his Lady Gaga lookalikes flirt with stereotypes and identity in the constant spotlight of their laptopcamera’s.
His work has been called both awfull and terrific so be prepared to either love it or hate it. You can check out a selection of his video’s at the Tilburg Central Library. The exhibition will run from the beginning of September and during the festival from 12 t/m 19 September 2010. Until then we will post more on Ryan Trecartin on our blog here every week.
In this world, the only dark side is to party alone.
