[inQ&A] Dub Gabriel

July 21, 2010

Less than two months until Incubate 2010. For the past few months we’ve been announcing new artists every week. But with 200 + artists coming up in September we can imagine you losing your hold. That’s why we compiled the Incubate 2010 Spotify playlist (http://incu.at/spotify). Subscribing to this playlist will get you acquainted with most of the Incubate 2010 bands.

Apart from their music, part of the getting-to-know-them-better-proces will also be us asking some of the artists a few questions in the upcoming months. The forty-seventh edition in a series:

Dub Gabriel

1. Can you please introduce yourself?
My name is Dub Gabriel.  I’m a musician & controllerist (see below about the Akai APC40) and an all-around digital troublemaker. I’m currently based in San Francisco after having spent many years in Brooklyn and more recently, a few in Berlin. I spend much of my time in the studio and I’ve had the honor of working with an incredible and diverse crew of artists that include U-Roy, Michael Stipe, Yo Majesty!, Balkan Beat Box, Lee Perry, The Master Musicians of Jajouka, Bauhaus and Meat Beat Manifesto. I’m gigging more and more these days and over past few years I’ve been fortunate enough to have played everywhere from Brooklyn to Beijing.

2. Where are you at the moment?
Right now I’m in the studio at the world head quarters for Destroy All Concepts (my label) with a fresh cup of espresso, warming up the MOOG and getting ready for world domination!

3.Have you played in the Netherlands before and if so, what’s your view on or experience with the scene you’re operating in in The Netherlands?
This will be my first time playing in the Netherlands and I’m really looking forward to it! It’s great that my introduction to your live scene is going to be at Incubate!

4. What can we expect of your gig at the Incubate Festival?
Ever since Akai’s APC40 controller for Ableton Live came out last year (incidentally, I’m now one of only three artists sponsored by Akai for the controller – the other two being Trent Reznor and Pete Townshend) I have finally been able to create the live experience I’ve always wanted to. My technique is a hybrid of studio-style live dubbing, on-the-fly remixing and traditional DJ’ing. It’s a far cry from the classic DJ set up of two turntables or Serato – not that I’m knocking that but, what I do is completely different. When you come to one of my shows it’s sonic-warfare – high-energy heavy bass designed to push subwoofers to their limits.

5. What are your plans for the (near) future?
Lot’s of new stuff soon-to-be or, just dropped, depending on when you read this. My next single is with MC Zulu on the mic and, I’ve just gotten a mind-blowing remix for it from by Liquid Stranger. I’ve also just finished a remix for Double Standard featuring Lee Perry & David Lynch (yes, the filmmaker) and, a mix for the new Meditronica remix album that also features remixes by Scorn, Badawi, Gaudi and others.
