The Incubate Gospel According to @nickhelderman

August 30, 2010

The Incubate gospel according to’ section gives you Incubate 2010 tips from insiders. Fifth one: Nicke Helderman

Who are you?
My name is Nick Helderman. I’m a music and portrait photographer from Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

What will you be doing during Incubate 2010 (Sept. 12-19)?
I will be making a photo essay about Incubate for Self-Titled, a magazine from Brooklyn, New York. It’s part of a series about different (independent) festivals around the world that I’ve photographed this year.

Which three artists do you recommend to see at Incubate 2010? (These do not have to be strictly music, of course)
The three artists that I’m looking forward to the most are The Ex, Women and Dan Deacon. The Ex their music and way of working have been a great influence to my photography since I got to work with them in 2007. It’s admirable how long they’ve been around and managed to stay relevant all the time with new projects, musicians and sounds. Actually I would recommend every act that is playing on their night. Women are a band from Calgary AB Canada who make music that reminds me of a mix of Sonic Youth, DEVO and the Beach Boys. Their shows are among the best I’ve seen in the last 2 years. The last time I saw Dan Deacon the audience was a crazy mix of young hoolahooping boys, pretty girls, punkrockers, nerdy dudes and hipsters. I love the energy in his music and how he participates with the audience. He performs with them, not just for them.

Which artist would you like to see on Incubate 2011?

It would be amazing to see Zerfu Demissie. He’s a famous Begana player from Ethiopia.
