[Incu Thursday] Matthew Shipp, Sleep Party People, The Oscillation and more announced for Incubate 2011

May 19, 2011

Hi there! This is Incu Thursday. Every Thursday, 14:00h local time, we announce the musicians that were confirmed for the Incubate 2011 festival during the past week. Whether it’s one or twenty names, as long as we have things to confirm…

Ticket sales have started here. There’s an early bird discount for the passepartouts which ends on May 31th! So make sure you grab one soon! Of course we also have day tickets up for sale.

For the first time, Incubate will, by popular demand, offer a campsite. Busses will be carrying visitors between the campsite and the festival ground. You can buy your camping tickets through here.

This week Matthew Shipp (photo), Sleep Party People, The Oscillation and Norberto Lobo have been added to the line-up of Incubate 2011!

Matthew Shipp (US) – 12/9

Tags: Free jazz

Going solo for a jazz pianist might sometimes turn out risky, but Matthew Shipp will leave the Incubate attendees stunned! Shipp has been compared to the pianist version of Peter Brotzmann (Incubate 2010) due to his same gently chaotic improvisations, as well as a combination between the harmony of Bill Evans and the rugged Thelonious Monk sound. Shipp takes free jazz approaches to well known jazz songs such as ‘Autumn Leaves’, chopping them up completely into something brand new.

Sleep Party People (DK) – 14/9

Tags: Lo-fi, indie, experimental

If you see people at Incubate running around with bunny masks, don’t look too surprised! Sleep Party People is a one-man project which creates the ultimate sleepy-afterparty living room sound. Thus by spacey tweaked vocals and psychedelic electronics that have this Flaming Lips versus My Bloody Valentine wave of sound on top of them. On tour frontman Brian will be supported by an orchestra of five band members, all dressed in black with bunny masks.

Mose Giganticus (US) – 16/9

Tags: Sludge, heavy metal

After Mastodon and Baroness it’s time for the next big thing to step up in modern sludge music. And we’ve already signed the petition for Mose Giganticus to be this! The main engine behind the band is the synth driven melodies like Genghis Tron without the crazy drumcomputer. Instead they add heavy hitting sludge drums and hardrock/heavy metal riffs with a volcano eruption of progressive rock parts. Mose Giganticus is a succeeded wedding between brutality and catchiness.

The Oscillation (UK) – 18/9

Tags: Krautrock, psychedelic

If you love Circle (Incubate 2010), take a red marker and put another circle around The Oscillation on this year’s timetable! With this band you’ll be guided through 70’s shoegazing krautrock music in a new jacket. Spaced out psychedelics, tribal rhythms and that same hypnotic and grooving sound as Moon Duo/Wooden Shjips but with less distortion. You can leave your drugs at home; The Oscillation will do the work!

Norberto Lobo (PT) – 18/9

Tags: Acoustic, instrumental

If you’re into pure acoustic guitar virtuoso, Norberto Lobo should be right up your alley. Stripped down to the very basics, one man with a guitar, Norberto plays mellow instrumental music both on 6-string as well on 12-string guitar. A successful solo career is just around the corner, after collaborations with Rhys Chatham (Incubate 2009) and Devendra Banhart. When someone’s capable of turning a Björk song into a stunning acoustic version, you know you’re in the right place!

With these five new additions, we’re now at 65 confirmations for Incubate 2011. More to come over the next few weeks of course! Want to know more about the artists? Check the artist profiles on the Incubate website.
