[Incu Thursday] Incubate announces ‘We Are Incubate’ including Daedelus, Chris Corsano and many many more
June 23, 2011
Hi there! This is Incu Thursday. Every Thursday, 14:00h local time, we announce the musicians that were confirmed for the Incubate 2011 festival during the past week. Whether it’s one or twenty names, as long as we have things to confirm…
Ticket sales are up and running well now. So head over here for your passepartouts or day tickets!
Remember we have acampsite for the first time this year as well! Busses will carry you between the campsite and the city centre. You can buy your camping tickets through the Incubate ticket shop.
This week we have a hell of a lot of announcements for you. We’ll start off with the announcement of eight projects: Play Me I’m Yours, Bill Drummond’s The Incubate 17, Dimitar Solakov, Momo, Wineke works with Wooden Shjips, New Jacks 3.0, SMSlingshot and Redecorators
We have added a big pile of names to the music lineup of Incubate 2011 including Daedelus, Felix Kubin, This Frontier Needs Heroes, Zachary Cale, Thought Forms, Brother JT, Let’s Wrestle, Oathbreaker, Little Scream, The Doozer, Gallops, Leecherous Gaze and Danava.
Also we are delighted to announce that legendary free jazz drummer Chris Corsano will curate the Paradox from Thursday ’till Sunday and will bring along Christine Sehnaoui, Mick Flower, John Edwards and Mats Gustafsson.
Subroutine Cares will curate Buitenbeentje on Sunday 18th and will bring along Spilt Milk, New YX, Rats on Rafts and Henk & Melle.
For the film lineup we have added Trash Humpers, Amer and White Lightnin’ to be screened at the festival.
German electronic pop artist Felix Kubin (Birth name: Felix Knoth, Born: 1969) lives and works against the gravity with Sci-Fi Pop/Noise/Animation Films/Radio Plays/Experimental Broadcasting. As the messenger of exploding lungs he started his label “Gagarin Records” in 1998 and rules the “syndicate of counter-noise” since 9.9.1999.
Chris Corsano already has a huge back catalogue of collaborations with past Incubate(d) artists like Massimo Pupillo from Zu, Six Organs of Admittance and Jandek. No wonder we’re absolutely delighted to have this legendary free jazz drummer to curate the whole weekend at Paradox. Corasno is known for his raucous, metallic, intense and complex noisy drumming, in which he will be joined by various guest musicians. Free jazz galore all along the weekend!
Guest musicians during the week at Paradox: September 16th: Christine Sehnaoui September 17th: Mick Flower September 18th: John Edwards + Mats Gustafsson
The Lebanese born, but currently based in France Christine Shenaoui is an alto-sax player with a huge background in playing improvised free jazz music. Besides working with other free jazz/improv artists like Stéphane Rives, Quentin Dubost and Agnès Palier she also performed with various orchestras and co-organizes the annual Irtijal festival in Lebanon. At Incubate she will be playing along with Chris Corsano on September 16th!
This Frontier Needs Heroes is a brother/sister duo from Brooklyn and I guess we’ve found some new folk/singer-songwriter heroes right here! They go back to the very basics; traditional folky acoustic guitar playing, minimalistic percussions and dual singing with some hints of alt-country. Described as the ultimate soundtrack to a sunrise in your backyard to wash away a hangover. But music wise, think of Belgian band The Bony King of Nowhere!
We can’t guarantee a campfire and a good bottle of single malt scotch on this one, but we can guarantee you a breathtaking show from Zachary Cale! This young Louisianan artist has been working his way up since 2003 making moody folk songs with hints to country and blues. The shuffling drumming, mellow guitar picking and Cale’s beautiful, unique voice compares to Leonard Cohen, Townes van Zandt, Bob Dylan and every synonym of the word awesome.
Perhaps you’ve seen Thought Forms’ name shining on the bill together with Portishead last year, or maybe you’ve seen them at Cul de Sac before. Or perhaps you didn’t. Either way, Thought Forms combine post rock, shoegaze and psychedelic rock, mostly instrumental but with the rare, yet effective use of vocals from time to time. Closest to comparing with early Mogwai records but don’t just expect album tracks, Thought Forms are also known for improvising some of their music in their live performances!
Brother JT comes from the Philadelphian garage rock scene, who spent his 80’s and 90’s performing with the band The Original Sins. And shortly after this band disbanded, JT (short for John Terlesky) decided to carry on pursuing his solo career. Based around very hazy vocals that contain highly spiritual lyrics, his music consists of uneasy to classify trippy and sometimes noisy psychedelic pop. The little brother of Roky Erickson and Daniel Johnston, so to say!
Let’s Wrestle is three young chaps from London who combine three chord riffs, bad jokes and a punkrock attitude to play their indie/pop influenced songs. With their humorous approach on life and witty lyrics these lads really can’t do anything wrong. Also with having their second album Nursing Home mixed by none other then Steve Albini these guys are ready to wrestle everyone on their way!
Just this bio would be too short to capture all of Daedelus’ work. Currently signed to Ninja Tune, this San Francisco based artist is known for his brilliant cut-and-paste sample based records similar to the likes of RJD2 and The Avalanches. Don’t be surprised to hear some uplifting bits of drum ‘n bass, dubstep, breaks and hip-hop in his DJ-sets as well. Don’t underestimate the man dressed in authentic Victorian clothing; fire will blast off the stage!
Bringing dark, technical and brutal hardcore, the Ghent based Oathbreaker are set to release their first full lenght Mælstrøm on Deathwish Records later this year. Having their album mixed by Kurt Ballou (Converge), these Belgians are ready to bring havoc all over Europe and the rest off the world. For fans of Cursed and Rise & Fall.
Having only released her first record earlier this year, Little Scream (a.k.a. Laurel Sprengelmeyer) is coming over all the way from Canada to mesmerize us with her guitar, violin, keys and beautiful voice. Her music is best described as soft melancholic folkpop with upfront lyrics about topics like cultleaders and witchcraft. Having recorded her album with members of Arcade Fire and The National this is something unique you will not want to miss.
Mick Flower is one of the founders of the English psychedelic/drone collective Vibracatchedral Orchestra and shared the stage with various other acts such as Jandek (Incubate 2009) and Sunburned Hand of the Man. He is no stranger on stage (and record as well) with Chris Corsano, guiding Corsano’s complex drumming work on the shamisen, the Japanese “three flavor strings” instrument. He will be playing along with Chris Corsano on September 17th
Syd Barret (Pink Floyd) has resurrected and this time under the alias of The Doozer. But now on the serious note, The Doozer is a musician from Camebridge who ‘builds’ music, as he insists on calling it himself. Either way, the building of his music results in eccentric poppy psychedelic folk music, easily taking you back to the 60s. But also with adding weird keyboard/synthersizer tones, drum machines and weird yet humoristic lyrics (“I’m too old for public transport”)
0100011101001111! Don’t know what I’m talking about? It means Go! in binaire, but it’s also the opening song of Gallops’ EP that got released by Holy Roar last year. Self described as Black Sabbath raped by pacman with Steve Reich glitch instrumental post rock soundscapes, this will probably not make anything more clearly. But above all they can best be compared to the math rock of Battles with the uplifting elements of 65daysofstatic. Post-rock with dancing shoes on!
For those of you that know Annihilation Time: Lecherous Gaze is the continuation of that punk band but with another vocalist. For those that have no idea whatsoever about that band: Lecherous Gaze concocted the perfect mix of punk rock with melodic hardrock guitar playing. No three-chord-only stuff, these guys can play for real. It’s the combination that makes it a lean mean swinging machine. We dare you to stand and watch and not let this infectious music take control of your limbs. You can’t.
In a time before time, let’s call it the sixties, there was this band that came from beyond. It became the starting point for a musical movement not seen before. Or after. The movement? Heavy metal. The band? Black Sabbath. Of course such a band deserves to be honored. Time after time. Danava from the US does a great job at this if you ask us. Proper hardrock with some stoner influences and clean high-pitched vocals. Smoke that grass, clench your fist, grab a beer and let the worship commence!
Harmony Korine gives us a peek into the lives of an imaginary group of elderly people, with what seems to be a home movie in which they film eachother and their daily routines. It looks and feels like found footage, like stuff on a strange videotape found in the trash somewhere. Whether you love it or hate it, this film really is one of a kind.
Amer is a modern Giallo film – the Italian 70′s genre featuring murder, blood and erotics, brought with intense colours. In Amer we follow the beautiful Ana in three stages of her life. It’s a visually intoxicating and almost wordless murder mystery. A very sensual and surrealistic film.
White Lightnin’ is a white-trash psychobilly nightmare about Jesco White, “the dancing outlaw”. As a boy Jesco was in and out of reform school and the insane asylum. To keep him out of trouble, his daddy D-Ray taught him the art of mountain dancing, a frenzied version of tap dancing to wild country banjo music. The story of a tap-dancing maniac.
Imagine walking on a lonely street and stumbling across an abandoned piano… You start by tapping a few notes to see if it works… And suddenly people start coming out of nowhere to join you and the sounds you create… ‘Play Me I’m Yours’ is a project by British based artist Luke Jerram where he places pianos around a city, free for all to play on. The project has been done in cities like New York, London and Sidney and now ‘Play Me I’m Yours’ is coming to Tilburg. So if you see a piano on the streets during Incubate festival… don’t hesitate and come jam!
The British artist Bill Drummond is known for playing in bands like The KLF and The K Foundation. With The KLF he had a number one hit song with “3 a.m. Eternal (Live at the S.S.L.)”. But maybe he’s better known for burning one million pounds sterling that he and his band members had left over when The KLF stopped. During Incubate will he perform his project The 17. In The Incubate 17 Drummond works with a choir consisting of members of the Incubate community that will sing a work by him. This is always a unique and one-off performance. It is Drummonds response to recorded music. He views the recording and selling of music as an “impersonal experience” and tries to return to co-creating and experiencing music with The 17.So far, more than three thousand people formed a part of The 17.

Within modern contemporary composed music it’s difficult for young musicians and composers to find a place to get their music heard. In the past, Incubate contributed by offering space in the Kraak Link Program. This method is reviewed and redecorated. Every day amateurs and professionals play music in an unusual location in the city at the festival. Not only does the visitor come in touch with music that normally rarely heard in this context, but Incubate thus offers a place to try-outs for players and composers. Redecorators lifts chamber music into the 21st century and presents a new way of bringing composed music with the accessibility of popular music. On this project Incubate works together with De Link, Conservatory of Tilburg and Factorium.

Mo 12th UIUIUI KOO vocals, cello and electronics
The uiuiui koo ensemble consists of the following three members: Nina Hitz Cora Schmeiser Anne Wellmer
Since the beginning of 2007 they’ve combined several musical and artistic traditions to create their own sound and imagery. With a backdrop by Marielle Verdijk and suits from a fictional era uiuiui koo creates a somewhat absurd atmosphere, where series of short, diverse pieces of music are combined to create a whole. The result sounds like barique music from a shortwave radio, or as Delia Derbyshire from Radiophonic Workshop BBC looking for Shubert in a forgotten future – pieces of composed music alternate with improvisations.

Vincent van Amsterdam (accordion) en Eva Gemeinhardt (recorder) has been a duo since 2010. Their repertoire includes compositions from the Middle Ages to the twenty-first century. The program includes works by Keiko Harada and Tomi Räisänen.

Exitmusic – Passage This duo consists of husband and wife Devon Church en Aleska Palladino, from (Shit, again?!) Brooklyn, New York. With EP From Silence, which they released a year ago Exitmusic showed us their first sign of life.. Passage, their debutalbum, is a bit more bombastic, but still got the sultry sound.
