[Incu Thursday] Glen Hansard at Natuurtheater, XLR8R program and many more announced for Incubate 2011
June 30, 2011
Hi there! This is Incu Thursday. Every Thursday, 14:00h local time, we announce the musicians that were confirmed for the Incubate 2011 festival during the past week. Whether it’s one or twenty names, as long as we have things to confirm…
Ticket sales are up and running well now. So head over here for your passepartouts or day tickets!
Remember we have acampsite for the first time this year as well! Busses will carry you between the campsite and the city centre. You can buy your camping tickets through the Incubate ticket shop.
After the huge announcement last week, we continue with yet another bunch of awesome artists! We have added Glen Hansard, Main, Peter Taylor’s New Works For Guitar, Ford & Lopatin, Loud Squirt, White Wizard, This Routine Is Hell, Consort Spectrale and Donné et Desirée to the Incubate 2011 lineup!
The Frames singer/guitarist Glen Hansard will be part of our Glocal project and will perform a very exclusive acoustic show in Natuurtheater, Oisterwijk, continuing the series of concerts at the beautiful venue after unforgettable shows of Wardruna and Black Mountain.
We are also thrilled to announce the XLR8R curated program for you, which you can read all about here. To sum up; we have many great artists during the weekend at Midi Theater including Theo Parrish, Girl Unit, Untold, Demdike Stare, Loefah, Jackmaster, Julio Bashmore, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Broddika, Oneman, Brackles, Ben UFO, Contakt, Ghosts on Tape, Holy Other and Shawn Reynaldo!
A “shwagy situation” resulted in changing the name from Games into their surnames, Ford & Loptain which features a member of Brooklyn’s synthpop band Tigercity as well as the man behind the drone project Oneohtrix Point Never. Closest to Ford’s Tigercity their album was produced in Jan Hammer’s (Miami Vice Theme!) studio, which also gives their music a nice 80s feel. Their catchy, synthy electro pop instrumentation is supported by addictive vocals, also nicely drawn through a vocoder sometimes!
Academy-award winning singer and guitarist Glen Hansard (The Frames/The Swell Season) will perform a very exclusive acoustic show in the Natuurtheater venue in Oisterwijk. The Irish singer won an Oscar for ‘Best Original Song’ in 2007 for the song Falling Slowly. Hansard is continuing the series of concerts at the beautiful venue in the forest after unforgettable shows of Wardruna and Black Mountain at previous Incubate editions.
If Burial would decide to continue making his tunes at night in an abandoned place, there’s a huge chance Holy Other would sound something like that! Little is known about this Berlin based artist, but it’s the music that counts after all! Holy Other combines the best from the chillwave scene (think Toro Y Moi), dubstep (Mount Kimbie/Burial) and the recently hyped “ghost” genres (witch house, ghost drone, grave wave whatever you want to call it) with raw ambient atmospherics on top.
Take Miles, ½ of Pendle Coven and also known as MLZ and Sean, part of the Finders Keepers crew and you’ll get the new occulty project Demdike Stare. Their music sounds like Lustmord going tribal; dark, droning ambient pieces with Middle Eastern and Eastern European percussion and psychedelic looping soundscapes on top. There has been a ridiculous run on their records lately, with them being sold out everywhere, of course for a good reason. Lucky you that Incubate isn’t sold out yet which gives you the chance to check out this unique live experience.
Demlike Stare will do an exclusive audio/visual live performance!
XLR8R already featured him in the “artist to watch” section back in 2009 and now finally on European soil for the very first time; Ghosts on Tape! And with a Roska remix on the debut EP, you know you can’t go wrong. The name Ghosts on Tape might indicate you’re dealing with another witch house act, yet this is the total opposite! Expect a raw mix of electro, grime, dancehall, reggaeton and crunky dubstep, also dubbed as Tropical Bass. Partyhardy!
As if Instra:mental wasn’t enough goodness yet, Al Bleek (half of the duo) started releasing records and bringing danger all over the world under the name of Boddika as well! A groovy connection between electro, house, techno and a bit of dubstep is where it’s at this time, with a good dose of 90’s acid and punchy 808 techno as well. With remixes for the likes of Hyetal (Incubate 2010) and releases on Loefah’s Swamp 81 label under his belt, you know this is going to be big!
Even though Untold only released his first record in 2008, his biography is pretty impressive to say at least. No wonder BBC Radio 1’s Mary Anne Hobbs called him “one to watch” back in 2009, when shortly after he started playing all over the world and releasing records on big labels such as Hotflush and Hessle Audio. While is records contain deep and atmospheric dubstep, don’t look to surprised to hear some cumbia dancefloor beats from the man in his DJ sets as well!
From the vaults of Groningen comes the trio Loud Squirt. Their shows are an explosive mixture of high energy garage/punkrock/rock ’ n roll inspired by bands like New Bomb Turks and The Gories. They recorded their latest 7” in an oldschool analog way directly to tape, so you can imagine what this is gonna sound like. Our only advice for you is to come out to this party and get up close and personal in the front!
Fast, furious and short, that’s what sums up This Routine Is Hell! Remember Paint it Black at ZXZW in 2008? Alongside Minor Threat one of the biggest influences on this young band from Utrecht. The combination between these two results in something dangerous. A heavy piece of hardcore punk, which can also be compared with the likes of Ceremony; mean, nasty, short and pile-up friendly!
No wonder we invited Shawn Reynaldo and crew from XLR8R to curate the Midi Theater at Incubate 2011! By looking at Shawn’s past recommended artists on the XLR8R blog, artist names from previous Incubate editions such as Raffertie, Schlachthofbronx, Kap Bambino and Munchi pop up. As a DJ, Shawn combines the hottest beats within dubstep, garage and house at the moment. Time to get moving!
If you wonder where the current killer dancefloor tracks are coming from, the Local Action camp is currently running big things, globally! Contakt is one of those young acts coming from this promising label. He recently released his debut release on the label full of deep, melodic and funky dubstep and techno beats, even including a remix by the legendary Detroit techno producer DJ Rolando. Currently well settled in the record bags of the likes of Sinden, Loco Dice and Brodinski!
A lot of Incubate related artists such as James Blake, Headhunter (Addison Groove) and Untold lead towards one man, Ben UFO! Ever since 2007 Ben has been putting out their quality dubstep records from these artists and many more influenced by uk/future garage, techno and broken beats. And his DJ sets are filled with none the less, as you can hear on his bi-weekly show on the infamous London-based Rinse FM radiostation.
Warming up with DJ sets at the infamous FWD nights in London (home for the likes of Skream, Pearson Sound, N-Type and many others) certainly helped Brackles gain his well deserved fame. By regular appearances on Rinse FM and releases on Planet Mu and !K7, he spreads his 2-step/garage influenced dubstep beats all over the London scene and is now ready to make a debut appearance in Tilburg. Dangerously energetic, funky and rolling!
One man, two decks and a bag full of fresh records. Oneman is no stranger in the London scene; from his notorious dj performances at leading venues like Fabric and Plan B to residency at the FWD parties and various shows at (ex-pirate station, now leading FM radio) Rinse FM! Oneman quickly switches, swaps and rides throughout recent and forthcoming dubstep bangers, but we can ensure you’ll hear some grime, garage and reggeaton beats from him as well! Reeeeeewind!
Wut wut wut! If you haven’t heard this song from Girl Unit touching down on dancefloors all over the world, please lift your rock and climb from underneath there! Girl Unit will be tearing up the stage at Incubate 2011 with tons of new dubstep, uk funky and future garage records in the record bag. We’re already sure his releases on Bok Bok’s Night Slugs label will touch down like a hurricane, but future dancefloor anthems will be guaranteed as well!
Inspired by the likes of Miles Davis and Nina Simone when he grew up in Chicago, Theo Parrish moved to Detroit and became one of the pioneers within the techno and house scene. Other than a lot of artists from the scene, Parrish’ music has never been just straight forward. By re-editing old disco, funk and soul records, he adds some serious groove to his records. If you’re a fan deep Detroit techno like Carl Craig, Stacy Pullen and Juan Atkins, come and groove with this legendary DJ!
It’s time to fight for metal tonight! Bangers take your stand and obey! Heavy yet melodic guitars, pounding drums and screaming vocals, that’s what this LA heavy metal outfit is all about. It’s no surprise that White Wizzard is heavily influenced by bands like Iron Maiden, Exodus and Judas Priest. White Wizzard will be playing the official Incubate afterparty at Little Devil, so get out your patched jacket, throw up your horns and come party!
Formed by Robert Hampson, who also worked with Godflesh and Scott Dawson of the legendary shoegaze band Loop, Main started back in 1991. For years they have been making buzzing ambient drone sounds with dark electric guitars and sample loops. They are back on stage for the very first time in six years at Incubate 2011, after disbanding in 2006. If you enjoyed Final at last year’s Incubate and didn’t get enough of amazing ambient music after Lustmord, Main should definitely be marked on your schedule!
The latest and well received volume in the DJ Kicks series was done by broken beat and (deep) house producer Motor City Drum Ensemble. By starting with a track from Sun Ra, you already know the deal; an eclectic selection is the key! In his DJ-sets, Motor City Drum Ensemble merges old jazz records with Detroit & Chicaco house tracks from the likes of Robert Hood and Mr. Fingers, as well as his own deep and soulful productions. Don’t sleep on this!
Just hearing ‘Da Funk’ from Daft Punk at a young age for the first time wasn’t enough for Julio Bashmore, who rushed to the store for a copy of Reason to make his own tracks. Few years later he ended up getting signed by Claude VonStroke to release some of his “Dirtybird” gems (as VonStroke calls it). But above all, the main base for his music is UK House with stomping bass steps, grooving beats and funky leads!
There are few artists we can entrust having Aphex Twin, Radiohead and Addison Groove (Headhunter, Incubate 2010) on the same mix compilation, yet with Jackmaster this turns out into straight awesomeness. Without having a single release out, Fabriclive already forecasted the hype around this young Glaswegian DJ and gave him the chance to mix one of the quality Fabriclive cds. And not only on cd but also at Incubate 2011, Jackmaster will bring raw Detroit techno and UK bass/dubstep together.
Under the moniker of Consort Spectrale, the Pauluskerk will make space for three lute musicians! They will celebrate one of the most important composers of the renaissance era, Josquin des Prez, who died 490 years ago. The lute-trio consists of Che Chen, Robbie Lee and Jozef van Wissem, also playing violin, recorder and portative organ. Stephan Matieu from ambient project Main (also playing the same day) will accompany them on cymbals and authentic virginals!
Peter J Taylor, who we already know from playing in Action Beat (Incubate 2010), is coming back to Tilburg. In this new project he is looking for voluntary musicians to play his latest compositions. Although the music is not particularly hard to play, musicians will be asked to specially prepare their instruments and to follow written instructions. Musicians would also be required to use a tuner, distortion pedal and attend a short practice before the show. Musicians can apply for this soon via the Incubate blog.
With these new additions, we’re now at 151 confirmations for Incubate 2011. More to come over the next few weeks of course! Want to know more about the artists? Check the artist profiles on the Incubate website.
