[Incu Thursday] Battles, Nosaj Thing, Klaus Beyer, DJ Madd and more added to Incubate 2011!
July 21, 2011
Hi there! This is Incu Thursday. Every Thursday, 14:00h local time, we announce the musicians that were confirmed for the Incubate 2011 festival during the past week. Whether it’s one or twenty names, as long as we have things to confirm…
Ticket sales are up and running well now. So head over here for your passepartouts or day tickets!
Remember we have acampsite for the first time this year as well! Busses will carry you between the campsite and the city centre. You can buy your camping tickets through the Incubate ticket shop.
The line-up for Incubate 2011 is nearly complete but we still have some very nice surpises! Please welcome; Battles (photo) will play a very special show in the forest at Natuurtheater. Also confirmed are Nosaj Thing, Matanza, Author & Punisher, Gruppe 80 and Klaus Beyer.
Enough is enough but even more is better! So besides the sick XLR8R line-up we already announced a few weeks back, we are proud to announce that Trigga will be hosting their 21st event in the café of Midi Theater on the Friday of Incubate. Besides their host DMDN, they also bring artists like DJ Madd, Benton and Bots.
We have invited DJ /Rupture, who played at Incubate last year as well, back for a special project. He will be doing the Soy Waltz project which you can read all about below. Besides that Lost Painters will be doing a special exhibtion with rotating artists every day called The Lost Relay.
This week, we’ve also confirmed a Q&A with MOMO and Tilburg based artist Koen Delaere at our DIY Conference. MOMO is known for thoughtful urban-intervention, using post-graffiti. In New York, Barcelona, Toronto and Sao Paolo, buildings are decorated by the graffiti artist. Incubate adds Tilburg to this list. In September, the artist will decorate buildings in Tilburg with colors, lines and figures. Koen Delaere will talk to him about the origins and ethics of his work. Check out the complete program of the DIY Conference here.
Two new films have been added to the program; Noise and Resistance and a film part of the Kraak curated program by Makino Takashi.
math rock, electronic Incubate’s artistic director Vincent Koreman is proud to have Battles join the line-up for the 2011 edition of the festival: “Battles is one of those bands which has been pushing their own style for years and has risen to success by staying true to themselves. We at Incubate are blatant fan boys and can’t wait to see the band play the amazing Natuurtheater in Oisterwijk!”
We’re extremely proud to have Battles on this year’s line-up, playing an exclusive show at Natuurtheater in Oisterwijk! Battles combine complex rhythms, synths, processed guitar riffs and surprising (multi-instrumentalist) switches between instruments, guaranteed for constant ‘wtf’-moments. Also known for the characteristic extremely high drum cymbals and the use of guest vocalist such as Gary Numan and Blonde Redhead’s Kazu Makino, which they project live on big screens in a brilliant way.
If Flying Lotus’ beats and Burial’s atmospheres would combine, something closely sounding to Nosaj Thing would emerge. With neck snapping hip-hop beats, glitchy rhythms and grooving synths, Nosaj (actually his first name Jason spelled backwards) will drag you into his deep music along with a very special visual show which will use the whole stage to strenghten the intensity of his music. We’ll dim the lights, Nosaj will provide the earcandy.
Matanza is the amalgamated work of Vicente Bassquez, Spec and Rodrigo Gallardo, the ultimate combination of Andes vs Street House. Their career started four years ago spinning in the bohemian clubs of Santiago de Chile. Spec and Vicente were the kings of turntablism in the hip-hop scene, but after a trip to Buenos Aires their love for house music started to bloom they decided to start a project which needed a third head. Rodrigo Gallardo stepped in with the Andean flow, they started producing tracks with andean and tropical influences while mixing it with the sounds of the streets of Chicago.
Klaus Beyer is no stranger in Tilburg, as we already invited him at the New Year’s reception in 013 earlier this year. But you might know him better from being the man behind albums like Hauptmann Peppers Einsamer Herzen Klub and now exclusively presenting Das Weisse Album at Incubate. That’s right, Beyer translates and performs The Beatles covers and will be doing a solo show as well one with a band (tba). He will also be interviewed at Rode Kamer on Wednesday and we’ll screen a movie of him on Thursday. Kommt zusammen zu Klaus Beyer!
BOTS is a local dubstep DJ from neighbour city Breda, who has been active as a DJ, animator VJ and promotor for more than 10 years. After tearing the roof of at earlier Trigga editions BOTS is back for this special Trigga at Miditheater!
DMDN is founder and main force behind Tilburg’s TRIGGA nights, one of the leading dubstep parties in Holland. This successful night carries on hosting artists like Appleblim, Ramadanman, Bar9, Bare Noiz, Jack Sparrow and many more. Locally also known for running the Antenna Records recordstore, but those who’ve seen him tear down the Stage01 last year during Incubate know the real deal. Fire!
It were the good old jungle tracks like DJ Krust’s Jazz Note that got Benton into playing music ever since he was about nine years old. But it wasn’t until 2007-2008 that he started making his own beats, from drum ‘n bass to grime and electro, shortly rolling into the dubstep scene after that. His tracks eventually got picked up by the one and only N-Type for his Wheel & Deal label, releasing his deep, dark and dangerous bass tracks. Incubate, beware!
If you want your dubstep as deep as possible, you can stop looking and get down to DJ Madd! This Budapest born, now UK-based dj and producer already has a huge discography with tracks on labels such as Boka, Black Box, Osiris (Kryptic Minds’ label), Wheel & Deal (N-Type’s label) and the Dutch Subway label. Not your average, superficial dubstep; is songs are extremely diverse but have one thing in common, being mad(d) deep and dark!
Gruppe80 is a rowdy German new wave/punk outfit in the vein of Dead Kennedys, Wire and Devo. Combining short and heavy lyrics with an attitude and a new wave sound with vintage organs, Gruppe80 will be the perfect occasion for you to jump and pogo around while singing along!
Author & Punisher is an industrial doom and drone metal, one man band utilizing primarily custom fabricated machines/controllers and speakers. Drone/Dub Machines are custom made machines fabricated from raw materials and utilizing open source circuitry. The devices draw heavily on aspects of industrial automation, robotics and mechanical tools and devices, focusing on the eroticism of interaction with machine. Expect heavy homemade drone and doom influenced sounds.
American producer and DJ Jace Clayton, operating under the name DJ / rupture delves into the musical heritage of Brabant. He did this earlier in South America and Africa. Clayton meets people who attempt to document but also play and sing the traditional songs of Brabant. With these recordings Clayton goes to work. After a visit to the organic farm ‘t Schop Clayton then came up with a plan to present these results.
In the installation The Soya Waltz the market prices of genetically manipulated soy (which is mainly used as pig food) are linked with sounds from the past Brabant. Brabant is known as the pig barn from the Netherlands – and possibly Europe – and this way you can literally hear what you eat. Later on the idea exists of the countries where soy is grown (mostly South America) to play a role in processing the recordings from Brabant.
Project of the LOST PAINTERS blog taking place at Incubate 2011. In a week long discussion about the visual arts, they will discuss language, style, use of the room and the general state of the visual arts in a program that will take place daily at 20.00 at the Argument Room. Every day there will be new artists participating in the ongoing exhibition and every evening they will talk about the work.
This documentary gives us an insight into Europe’s punk scene. Built on autonomy and solidarity, with strong political ideas that are expressed not only through the music but also in the way of life. The film takes us from squatters in Barcelona, to antifascists in Moscow. Starring Crass’ Penny Rimbaud and Gee Vaucher.
Makino Takashi (1987, Tokio) is a filmmaker from the new generation of Japanese experimental movies. During his studies at Nippon University he started by creating super8 movies. In 2001 he honed his skills with the Quay Brothers. During Incubate he will show 30 minutes of his work during the Kraak program.
