[Inculeaks] interview with Jan Pier Brands

July 25, 2011

Just like Wikileaks, Inculeaks brings important news and information to the public through Radio! Inculeaks gives the Incubate audience a new role as creative participator and functions as a constant leak of information sent straight from the Incubate audience, to the Incubate audience.

Inculeaks collaborates with radio stations, radio makers, artists, musicians and people with a interest in Independent Culture which provide us with their own audio files, and with that, leak their personal interests on Inculeaks. Inculeaks will air 24/7 during the Incubate festival in the local Ether in Tilburg and live-stream on our website.

Leading up to the festival we are going to do lot of interviews. With (Inculeaks) radio makers, artists, DJ’s and also the people involved with Incubate. In this edition we’ve got Janpier from De Nightrider for you.

1. Can you please introduce yourself?
My name is Janpier Brands, from Friesland. I used to run a pirate radio station in the city of Groningen with a couple of friends. It was called ‘the Nightrider’. We were cought twice by the authorities, and had to pay enormous amounts of money to stay out of jail. Really, it’s far cheaper to rape and/or kill then to be a pirate. This was all in the nineties. We had a musical blend of traditional Dutch Language Schlager music, jazz, organ music, in short: music we found on flea markets and in the thrift store. Some of the stuff we did can be found on the internet. In the current year of 2011 I am a teacher, I love to do interventions, I like the idea of Homo Ludens. I have a modern dance group.

2. What can we expect of your Radio show on Inculeaks?
We’ll try and unleash some Tilburg secrets. With a group of people from Friesland (Janke, Willy Darktrousers, Hugomatic and more) we will explore local sounds, people, traditions, traffic, games, protest, and such. This we will mix with the sounds of birds like Johan&Henk, het Sneeuwbal Trio, Earl Bostic, Roy Orbison, and such. It will be next level infotainment, shooting our arrows on both the head and the heart.

3. In what way does Open Source affect you as a Radio maker?
Open source means: building together. It means: participation, democratication, co-creating, freedom, responsability, sharing. At this point, we have no idea in what way this all will affect us. May be not al all, who knows?

4. Do you notice a difference in participation (interactivity) when you look at Radio nowadays? Where do you think this comes from?
Yes of course! on the one hand, there is still the old fashion participation and interaction in games, call-in items, charts and all that stuff. on the other hand: everybody can start his own station! If you don’t like the station: start your own! The whole thing is: everybody is starting his own station (or shufflin’ their iPod, or last FM/Spotify), and therefore is living in his own bubble, wich eventualy leads to no participation at all! And if there is an attempt to participate it is (A) anonymous, as a ‘reaguurder’ on a forum (B) in front of a jury, that makes a fool out of you. May be a total free concept like Radio Nightrider might be the one that burst the bubble. Where does this come from? We don’t like restistance. Everything has to be custom made. There is an decreasing interest in each other, in diversity.

5. What are your plans for the (near) future?
Visit the Incubate DIY congress, share the thoughts with my beloved wife, family and students. After that: become a grand pa.
