Peter’s Playlist Potpourri

August 22, 2011

Our music booker Peter listed some of his favorite new tracks. Playlist in Spotify over here.

01. Efrim Manuel Menuck – Heavy Calls & Hospitals Blues
Some people might hate his voice, but this is definitely one of the strongest recordings I know by this founding member of Godspeed You Black Emperor and A Silver Mt. Zion. Almost every track on this solo debut sounds different, but all songs are really intense.

02. Jenny Hval – Blood Flight
Since intensity is one of the aspects i love the most in music, i can’t resist the intense beauty of Jenny Hval. Formerly known as Rockettothesky, Jenny Hval is now getting a lot of attention under her own name. Her new record – out on the always interesting Rune Grammofon – is especially striking for it’s explicit lyrics.

03. Akita / Gustafsson / O’Rourke – One Bird
Mats Gustafsson, performing with John Edwards and Chris Corsano at Incubate next month, teamed up with Jim O’Rourke and Masami Akita (of Merzbow) for probably the best noise record of the year. This came out in january on Editions Mego, but I only discovered it now.

04. Norberto Lobo – Charleston Para Jack
Norberto Lobo is from Portugal and is my favorite acoustic guitar player right now. If you like music by James Blackshaw or the acoustic work of Six Organs Of Admittance, then Norberto Lobo will be your cup of tea. His new record is called Fala Mansa, he will be playing the Paulus church at Incubate this year.

05. Zola Jesus – Vessel
Zola Jesus is one of the many people coming from a noise scene and getting a lot of press after shaking off the noise dress. Responsible for one of the best shows at Incubate 2010, Zola Jesus is back with this first single of her upcoming record Conatus that promises to be a bit noisier again.

06. Richard Youngs – Tessellations
You never know what to expect from Richard Youngs. At Incubate 2010 he did a vocals only show, when a lot of people expected acoustic stuff like you can hear on his youngest record Amplifying Host.

07. Barn Owl – Shadowland
Shadowland is the new record by the hyperactive ambient and drone band Barn owl. Hyperactive only because they are not only putting out records as Barn Owl, but members Jon Porras and Evan Caminiti do a lot of solo stuff as well. Probably the best project is Caminiti together with Lisa McGee as Higuma. Shadowland is the new 12 inch on Thrill Jockey, a label with an incredible high tempo of releasing brilliant stuff.

08. Plateaus – Beach Coma
New surf / garage band from San Diego, releasing their debut 7″ on Art Fag.

09. The Feeling Of Love – Empty Trash Bag
The Feeling Of Love is a French garage rock outfit influenced by The Velvet Underground and Suicide. “I’m listening to 60′s garage rock&roll, cause i’m old and i’m blue” they sing in this song.

10. Motor City Drum Ensemble – L.O.V.E.
Electronic music from Stuttgart, a city I didn’t associate with a music scene before. Motor City Drum Ensemble recently did a DJ Kicks album and this is the track he made for this mix.

11. Milk Maid – Not Me
Remember Nine Black Alps? That british band that sounded like Nirvana’s Bleach in every song? Their bass player started this new garage rock band Milk Maid, releasing his debut record on Fat Cat. Fat Cat, the label that I always associate with high profile indie like Múm and Animal Collective, or with piano players like Hauschka and Sylvain Chauveau, now put out great new guitar bands like Mazes and Burning Yellows (playing Incubate this year).

12. Brain Idea – Suspended In Bliss
Together with Fat Cat, Captured Tracks, Hozac, Sacred Bones, Trouble In Mind and Hardly Art, Mexican Summer is THE label right now for great new lo-fi bands. The EP Cosmos Factory from Chicago’s Brain Idea is one of my favorite releases right now

13. Martial Canterel – Occupy These Terms
Last months saw a lot of releases of artists reviving cold wave. Frank (Just Frank), Led Er Est, Cold Cave, The Soft Moon, Kindest Lines, Staccato Du Mal and other bands on Wierd Record like Martial Canterel. The solo project of one of the people of Xeno & Oaklander.

14. John Maus – Keep Pushing On
John Maus is another eighties reviver, with his new record We Must Become The Pitiless Censors Of Ourselves he’s all over the internet, being picked up by all the blogs after 10 years. His show at Incubated earlier this year was one of the most amazing shows i’ve seen in my life, only doing his backing vocals while totally freaking out.

15. Wooden Shjips – Drunk Girls
Ripley Johnson is a very busy man. After the pretty amazing record Mazes with Moon Duo (recording of show at Incubated 08 here) he also recorded a new record with his main band Wooden Shjips, who will be playing Incubate on 17 september. As the new Wooden Shjips record isn’t available on Spotify, I chose this cover version of LCD Soundsystem’s Drunk Girls.
