Below you can find an impression on Peter Broderick’s work at ‘Schop, giving birth to a cow!
Peter Broderick was part of this year’s Glocal project where he worked for ten days at organic farm Boerderij ‘t Schop. Nu.nl just put an special/interview online about his time in Brabant as well as Fileunder (both in Dutch). Peter Broderick also wrote down some memories himself, together with some sketches!
Peter Broderick will be performing a very special show at Pauluskerk during Incubate 2011 and a lunchconcert which you can read all about here.
‘Memories and highlights of ten lovely days in Brabant’
- Listening to the cows and especially the sheep, trying to imitate their sounds and talk back to them
- Cecile’s incredible cooking, plus eating meat and feeling wonderful about it
- Vla met hagelslag
- Putting my bare hand up inside a cow and feeling the hooves and nose of a calf that would be born in the next hours (see movie above as well)
- Singing together for the first time with Laura Arkana
- A day out with paul spapens, listening to his incredible stories, feeling his wisdom
- Putting on that blue jumpsuit and rubber boots, shoveling cow shit, distributing the food, and watching jan and Niek work. What a beautiful relationship they have with those animals

- Going out into the middle of the field every day (some days multiple times), making a drawing based on what i saw each day. Then lining up the pictures in my bedroom, watching my view of the field grow indoors
- A tour with a local nature guide, watching him calmly allow a mosquito to suck the blood from his hand. he lowered his eyes and said, “Look, see it filling up?” while the rest of us stood there and cringed. And once it finished and flew away, he pointed out how his hand was perfectly fine, no bump, no irritation, and we walked on.
- Riding bikes to Tilburg with Niek, going to see pierced arrows play at little devil, then walking around the may market in the night, eating stroopwafels and tosties, drinking and smoking, and riding back late in the night
- Riding bikes with Laura to a lake, sitting there with no one else around, playing cards and being extremely excited at my first ever sight of a hedgehog
- Riding with niek in the car, going to the other farms in the area to pick up supplies for ‘t schop, going to the butcher, playing with the huge dog outside and witnessing the last moments of some noble pigs

- Visits from many nice journalists and photographers and the amazing Incubate team and Bas and Frits
- Filming with Jef and Diek (am i spelling that right?), admiring their patience
- A trip to Belgium for some frites with Wouter, Niek and Laura
- Going to the safari park with Wouter as the most passionate and amazing guide, admiring the creatures and feeling sad
- Wouter’s birthday party complete with gageleer and jam session
- Writing a song and playing it late one night for Jan outside, him saying, “what’s that last sentence you sing?”, me saying, “there’s a peace i aim to make with any soul that’s ever here.” him saying, “that’s a nice sentence.” with a smile on his face
