Incubated presents: True Widow & Male Bonding

September 22, 2011

Haven’t got enough of Incubate yet? Every month after the Incubate festival, we will host an evening worthy of Incubate music just for you! The evening will be held at the Paradox and it’s named Incubated. The first evening is at the 6th of October with the bands: True Widow  and Male Bonding. It starts at 20:30, be there!

True Widow

It all started in November 2007, singer/guitarist Dan Phillips (former Slowride) moved back to Dallas, Texas after he took a break from music to begin fresh at a new project named True Widow. Together with singer/bassist Nicole Estill and drummer Timothy Starks they began their post-rock/slo-core sound with blending rumbling guitars.  Their sound is a stoner sound with some mellow vocals. Exactly a year later in November 2008 their first self-titled album was released.  They played live shows all across the United States and this is what they said about them:

Fader Magazine said: “True Widow, who grabbed those lackadaisical grunge breakdowns we didn’t even realize we missed, and drew them out in an epic swell of apathy and stoned whateverness”

Crawdaddy said of the band’s 2009 set at the Noise Pop Festival in San Francisco: “a mix of shoegaze and post rock with beautifully mellow vocals and menacing undertones, displaying a knack for delivering the rock goods while keeping the pace slow and steady with dynamics loud then soft—pretty downer music that manages to go interesting places even when it’s drenched in monotonous sludge. No gimmicks, just awesome music.”

Two years later they signed on at the Kemado label and released their sophomore album, As High As The Highest Heavens From The Center to the Circumference of the Earth. Want to hear what kind of music D.H., Nikki and Slim are playing listen here:

Male Bonding

Male Bonding first met whilst working in a recordstore shop. John Arthur Webb (vocals/guitar) and Kevin Hendrick (vocals/bass) met Robin Silas Christian (drums) there, and became an English based Punk Rock band named Male Bonding. Rising from a DIY scene in their hometown of Dalston, London, they went from performing their first gig at a house party named RAGE in May 2008 to signing at the Sub Pop label in July 2009. They sound like a indie-rockband from the 1990s with bits and pieces from dinosaur jr. and Hüsker Dü. They even did a collaboration with Rivers Cuomo from Weezer.

They released their first album, Nothing Hurts, released in May 2010 with generally positive reviews. The Guardian and Pitchfork Media even listed them in their category of Best New Music.

Pitchfork Media on Nothing Hurts: ‘The songs on Nothing Hurts are short, direct, pared down to essentials, and tightly packed– with hooks, with changes, with instrumental fireworks. They move rapidly from zoomy rock to more atmospheric breaks (“Franklin”), and from a terrific run of loose, spiky gems in the middle (“Crooked Scene”, “Weird Feelings”) to some surprises toward the end.’

The band has just released a new album in the end of August named ‘Endless Now’ and is performing together with True Widow at Incubated. Here are some sounds to get you into the sounds of Incubate.
