[Spotifriday] Your weekend soundtrack – week 4

January 27, 2012

Hi reader. Here’s another Spotifriday. Your soundtrack weekend. Due to the very few releases in the last couple of weeks, the last Spotifridays were kinda “meh”, but this week, dear reader, 6 albums you’re going to fall in love with.

Pop. 1280 – The Horror

Is it even possible that a band that appears on Sacred Bones records isn’t fucking great? Pop. 1280 is the newest band with a release at Sacred Bones and, just like The Men, Zachary Cale, Zola Jesus, Crystal Stilts and The Fresh & Onlys, WE LOVE THIS! It’s a raw shoegazy post-punk/synth-punk combination. Oh man, it tastes soooo good. You want this, trust us.
For fans of: The Men, Cabaret Voltaire, early-Sonic Youth, Odonis Odonis

Pulled Apart By Horses – Tough Love

One of the most hyperactive shows we ever saw on Incubate was by Pulled Apart By Horses. Promo-song V.E.N.O.M. already promised a lot and oh boy, did they deliver. This is what rock ‘n roll sounds like in 2012. Fast riffs, guttural screams, heavy bass lines, fast drumming and a firm kick in the balls. Who needs football when you can hooligan to this?
For fans of: Dananananaykroyd, Mclusky, The Ghost Of A Thousand, Cancer Bats

Abigail Williams – Becoming

Our personal über-metal-warrior (and head of marketing and communications) Jelle said that he couldn’t get into the last two Abigail Williams records. He wasn’t the only one. Real black-metal fans either loved or hated this band. But that is about to change with their new album. Biggest inspiration? Wolves In The Throne Room. Rip-off? Not really. This band just experiments a lot with their sound. This album is their best yet.
For fans of: Wolves In The Throne Room, Altar Of Plagues, Ash Borer, Deafheaven

Ansatz Der Maschine – Heat

Enough with the loud music. Belgium’s Ansatz Der Maschine deliver an amazingly beautiful album for silent Sundays and stay-at-home-Saturdays. Due to the wide range of instruments – acoustic guitars, electric guitars, violins, glockenspiel, mandolin, saxophone, soft electronics – this album never gets boring. Experimenting to keep their music surprising and inspiring. Did we say that it’s beautiful?
For fans of: Amatorski, Four Tet, Mount Kimbie, Pantha Du Prince

Jason Urick – I Love You

This album is one for the ambient and drone-fans among you. Jason Urick‘s debut album ‘Husbands’ was more drone-based, but the following EP-releases showed a more rhythmic feel. His new album is the perfect combination of those two. There are no loud and indistinct drones, but it still has that texture, whilst the rhythm is the river you float on, further and further.
For fans of: Tim Hecker, :Zoviet*France:, Boards Of Canad, Rhyton

Rhyton – Rhyton

And if above album wasn’t weird enough, Rhyton gives us one hell of an improv-album. But what do we call this? Prog-psych stoner rock? Light-doom shoegaze? Ethnic sludge ambient rock? It’s all over the place, and yet it never gets out of hand. We can’t really explain what is so amazing about this album. But holy shit, it’s amazing! Check it out right now!
For fans of: Jason Urick, Dead Meadow, Earth, Grails

There’ll be a new Spotifriday next week! Have a nice weekend.
