[Art Monday] Go see : Oliver Raffery @ Gradus

February 13, 2012

There is a new art-initiative in town! Gradus is an initiative by Just Quist. It is a temporary space for contemporary art and gives (inter)national artists the possibility of a focused week-long preparation for a presentation/exhibition.

Gradus is a theme in the complexly constructed novel Pale Fire by Vladimir Nabokov. In the novel Gradus acts as an indicator of the interplay between the comment and the poem. It is yet another counterpoint which enriches the novel’s structure even more. Nabokov was a writer who left little to chance, everything he wrote had a function or meaning

Oliver Rafferty is a painter. In his blog his sensitive way of viewing the world is evident. He sees up, down, past and in layers, usually ignoring the obvious. In a detail he sees the possibility to connect one thing to the other, in an oversight he recognizes a bundling of idiosyncratic resemblances, or simplicity in composition. It is how the changing patterns of our direct environment of daily objects, images and events manifest themselves to us. Therein he shows remarkable interest in texture and materiality. His work does not seem to know any boundaries, and the appropriating of ‘medium-unknown’ materials and manipulation of shape and color seem to confirm this.

The exhibitions starts Friday 17th, 20:00 hrs at the St. Annahof 1 Tilburg.
