[Spotifriday] Your weekend soundtrack – Week 11

March 16, 2012

Five new records to spend your weekends with. By the way; normally we don’t do EP’s, but this time we didn’t want you to miss this really nice music.

Philco Fiction – Finally

Like we said earlier, most of the time we bring you only full albums at Spotifriday but this time we want to make sure that you don’t miss this wonderful EP. A lot of bands from Scandinavia, this band is from Oslo, know how to combine structure with nice, delicate music which get stuck in your head. Well.. Philco Fiction is a band like that. For example the title song of this EP ‘Finally’: Minimalistic, and subtle structure, with some The xx-guitars, piano chords, and repeating catchy lyrics. Hope that they will release a full album soon, because this EP makes us eager to more of this of music.
For fans of: Warpaint, Hanne Hukkelberg, Love Inks

Whirr – Pipedreams

Our Frank is right now at SXSW and he told today about this band called Whirr. The band, formally known as Whirl, released their new album this week, what probably isn’t a coincidence because of the SXSW-festival. This band is a side project by Deafhaven-guitarist Nick Bassett. While Basset is making heavy metal with Deafhaven he’s playing kind of shoegaze with Whirr. The group tries to make music, and we quote; ”If My Bloody Valentine decided to cooperate with Sonic Youth“.
For fans of:  And I quote our colleague Frank; “The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, but then times as heavy”

Miike Snow – Happy To You

After the debut album in 2009 and several remixes for artists like Passion Pit, Depeche Mode, Peter Bjorn & John and Vampire Weekend the band is back with a brand new record called Happy To You. The music of this new record is a logical successor to their debut; Still catchy, electro pop songs, but you’ll notice the more attention the three gentlemen took for this ten songs. One of the songs, Black Tin Box, is a collaboration with fellow-Sweed Lykke Li. By the way; don’t forget to check out the bonus cd with remixes from the Miike Snow-songs by producers like Alex Metric, Wolfgang Gartner and Jacques Lu Cont.
For fans of: Junior Boys, Peter Bjorn & John, Passion Pit

Torus – Torus EP

When we heard this music we were very curious who’s behind this Torus. After some web-searching we found this the guy behind Torus is first of all Dutch, he’s from The Hague and second of all he is only eighteen years old! You wouldn’t say if you hear is dark, post-hiphop instrumental beats. He played with fellow youngster Shlohmo, his music is pretty similar, and before he conquered The Netherlands he’s already busy playing abroad. Check here for a short 8mm-film about this guy.

Hooded Fang – Tosta Mista

This week it’s finally getting a bit warmer in The Netherlands, and of course we need some perfect music for this temperature. The Canadians from Hooded Fang know how to make some cool surf-garage music. Hype man from the BBC Zane Lowe is fan, so probably they’re going to be big pretty soon. And thinking this music can be a waste of your time? Don’t worry, the complete album is only 23 minutes, some of the EP’s on this page are even longer.
For fans of: Balkans, Wavves, The Strokes
