This year Incubate presents not only a lot of great music, films, visual art and debate, but we’ve asked Zeebelt to put together a theaterprogram that can match the rest of the program. And so they did. We will be announcing one theater addition of Zeebelt in Residence for seven days on a row. We hope you like it as much as we do, as we are very proud to present this to you for the first time.

A carefully constructed miniature of the world; a piece where the performer as maker as performer controls all elements of the performance itself. You Are Here: is reality as a construction of the mind. More than theatrical acts, it is states of being, where nothing ‘happens’, but everything exists. It is alternatingly intimate and warm, intense and passionate, a piece in search of a way to belong together, to share together a moment, the meaning of ‘being alive,’ or at the very least, the search for such meaning.

Through text, music and sound written for voice, taiko, toy zither and live sampling; a live video feed of a lovingly prepared chocolate cake; a painstakingly and passionately self-constructed taiko, a process which took 1.5 years to complete; and a 10-meter dress, complete with 117 sitting places, made by the performer, to be inhabited by both the performer and the audience, You Are Here: offers a gently perverse perspective of the world.

You Are Here: is a state of existence.

About Stephanie Pan

Stephanie Pan is a singer and performance artist currently based in The Hague, the Netherlands.  She performs in experimental music, new music, experimental theater, and early music, specializing in extended vocal techniques and live improvisation.  At the root of her work is the notion of pure communication; finding a form of contact with the audience which is stripped of social expectations and distractions, that speaks beyond the conventional and social limitations and constructs of language.

Stephanie received her Masters in Theatre from DasArts: Advanced Studies in the Performing Arts (AHK), and holds a BA from UC Berkeley in Music and Applied Mathematics, and a First Phase Diploma, with distinction, in Classical Singing from The Royal Conservatory, The Hague.

You Are Here: van Stephanie Pan is een multimediaperformance bestaande uit drie delen. Als Stephanie Pan de schepper is, dan zijn stem, muziek en geluid haar aardse elementen. Met haar zang, handgemaakte taiko drum, live samples, zither en live-video schept ze een landschap waar ze haar publiek doorheen begeleidt.

Ze nodigt je uit plaats te nemen op haar jurk ter grootte van 117 stoelen. Ze serveert chocoladetaart, met de zoete smaak van de wereld. Haar landschap verandert, soms abrupt, en ontwikkelt van delicate klanken naar hypnotiserende, ritmische songs en zelfs agressief aanvoelende geluidswanden.

Over Stephanie Pan
 De in Amerika geboren Stephanie Pan (33) kwam na haar studie muziek aan de universiteit van Berkeley naar Den Haag om op het conservatorium opgeleid te worden in klassieke en moderne zang. Met die kennis op zak combineert ze vernieuwing en experiment met toegankelijkheid. In haar werken stelt ze het contact met haar publiek centraal. Contact dat is ontdaan van sociale verwachtingen en afleidingen. Door het schetsen van intimiteit en openheid doet ze een appèl op de onderbuik. Vaak met behulp van technologie die ons juist zo vaak afstandelijk maakt.
