This year Incubate presents not only a lot of great music, films, visual art and debate, but we’ve asked Zeebelt to put together a theaterprogram that can match the rest of the program. And so they did. We will be announcing one theater addition of Zeebelt in Residence for seven days on a row. We hope you like it as much as we do, as we are very proud to present this to you for the first time.

Loie Fuller is a performance of shape shifts, instant freezes, and temporary sculptures. It refers to Loie Fuller-miracle of the vaudeville scene and muse of the Art Nouveau movement- but more in Yvonne Rainer’s manner. Fuller, the dancer, is here stripped down to a Dancing Dress (a 1894 patent). This ‘denuded’ Fuller makes one think of a pre-modern cyborg. When this compound of flesh, meters of silk, and sticks of bamboo or aluminium moves, it is hard to discern who or what moves and how. Loie Fuller is a performance in which both materials and a body engage in an instantaneous writing of movement.

Rotterdam choreographer Ola Maciejewska has been researching the work of Loie Fuller, an American dance pioneer of the late 19th century. Fuller manipulated gigantic robes, that she designed and patented herself, into sculptural forms.

In haar gigantische zwarte of gele jurk beweegt Ola Maciejewska zich als een levende sculptuur door de ruimte. Soms verstard, dan als een levendige vlinder. Loie Fuller is een ode aan en inspiratie op Loïe Fuller, de 19-eeuwse danseres die aan de wieg stond van de moderne dans. In deze interdisciplinaire performance zet Ola de ideeën van Fuller om naar haar eigen werk, balancerend op de rand van dans, sculptuur en choreografie.

De Poolse Ola Maciejewska maakte veel indruk als performer in de laatste drie producties van Bruno Listopad. Zij is echter in de eerste plaats choreografe en studeert daarnaast theater- en danswetenschap in Utrecht. Voor haar afstudeerscriptie onderzoekt Ola hoe objecten, materialen en dieren door de dansgeschiedenis heen het begrip van choreografie verruimden.
