For the fourth time we invited young artists to create new work for our festival. Since last year we collaborate together with bkkc on a shared exhibition by artists that are not yet graduated, or did so less than 5 years ago at a Brabant art academy. For the first time we invited artists to submit themselves for New Jacks 4.0. Of all these submission 5 artists were selected, they will work with the theme: “You are Incubate”. Among the selected artists is Petra van Noort, we asked several question to get to know her better.
Which things/places inspire you?
Everything and every place can be an inspiration. I get my inspiration from walking around in different cities, reading articles, browsing the internet and watching documentaries.
Who are your idols and why?
Paul McCarthy is an inspiration because his work is so free and seems to have no boundaries. His way of working is very opposite to mine. I envy that sometimes. Matthew Barney‘s style is more designed. I like the way he makes optimal use of different materials. In the Netherlands we have some great artists too like Folkert de Jong and Marc Bijl.
When did you know you wanted to be an artist?
I don’t know if you ever know.
What are you showing at New Jacks 4.0?
I am going to make a mural in the bkkc. It is going to show drawings of different woman presenting themselves on the internet so they can be selected by men all over the world. These mail-order brides are looking for a better life and they hope to find it somewhere else.
Are you looking for a particular reaction from the audience?
I hope I can make people think about the subjects I use but just enjoyment and a little smile is good as well.
Have you seen previous New Jacks exhibitions? What did you like the most there?
I have never been to a New Jacks exhibition.
The New Jacks 4.0 exhibition will be open from Thursday September 6th to September 30th at bkkc / Ticket and info center and features work by Jordy Koevoets, Petra van Noort, Angela de Weijer, Robert Lombarts and Erik van Liere.
