The cream of the crop of the Dutch metal scene Textures is hitting the road again.  Together with the British metal band Sylosis they’ll visit eleven european venues for an European tour. The last gig is on 11 March at the 013 here in Tilburg, and we are giving away 2×2 tickets.

They turned out to be the unplanned break-through on the festival. We offer more than 250 bands each year and just a few of them are lucky enough to make it to the mainstream. Most of all, because we do not program that many mainstream acts. We program the bands and artists that represent independent culture.
But that doesn’t change the fact that Rats On Rafts made it to the big league. The aggregator? The show in Kafee ‘t Buitenbeentje, during Incubate 2011. No other than the English well-known former-musician and BBC-commentator John Robb said he was blown away by their performance. From there on, it went quick. The Dutch paper De Volkskrant declared them ones to watch in their review of Incubate 2011. The biggest Dutch TV-show De Wereld Draait Door gave them the opportunity to perform on the show.  They performed on the showcase festival Eurosonic/Noorderslag and now they’re headlining their own tour and they even hit the UK. We programmed them on Frisse Oren in January to show the Tilburgers what they missed out on.
And this month, they will perform in 013 again. We  can assure you, you do NOT want to miss it. Not only because the amazing Harry Merry (well-known to the frequent Incubated visitors) is to perform there as well. But also because this is probably the last time, you will see them in a small hall. And if you buy a ticket for Rats On Rafts/Harry Merry, you get a ticket for the show of Waters/Houses for free! Waters is the new band from ex-Port O’Brien frontman Van Pierszalowski. Check out a cool single here. But we like to stress you to see Houses. An Amsterdam-based Dutch indiepop-band, who show some great potential. Not every song on their debut is a direct hit, but if they can write songs like ‘Stay With Me‘, they sure can write great tracks.

The 2 lovely ladies that organised the We Eat INcubate, Joanne and Sanne, got great responses about the Eat-In. So they decided to make a new one: The Winter Eat-In! And you should all come. It’s on January 28th, at the Bomenlounge. You may know that place as the FAXX-building. And if you don’t know that either, it’s Dunantstraat 1 in Tilburg. It’s the street next to 013 Popcentre. It starts at 14:00.

If you don’t know what an Eat-In is, it’s simple. Everybody makes something to eat at home with at least one biological ingredient. You bring it to the Eat-In and put it on the table. And then everyone can pick whatever they want! Salads, desserts, carpaccio’s, you name it. So we hope to see you there with your best meal!

Serena Maneesh did a great job at Incubate in 2010. We were able to record the audio of the show they did back then and now you can listen to a number of the songs they played on our soundcloud!

‘Serena’ is an adaptation of the Norwegian word for veil. Veil is a very diverse word, which fits with Serena-Maneesh. From hiding to holding back to conceal something. Serena could also mean serenity, serene. There are all these connotations. Then you see glints and you see something incredible, but it’s in the moment. That is why you can see the melody through a stressful storm of noise. It’s through this veil.

‘Maneesh’ is a rewriting of the Norwegian word ‘manesje,’ which is the area around a stage. If you look at a stage in a circus or opera, there’s an area surrounding the stage containing a lot of elements. Small, subtle elements that make the stage presence that much more powerful. That’s incredible.

If ever two words conjured the elemental nature of this band’s sound, they are Serena Maneesh. Listen to their Incubate 2010 live-set below and enjoy the deep and dark music from Serena Maneesh! Btw, if you like Serena Maneesh, also check out Le Corbeau.

Ever since their first show at Roadburn turned into one sweating mass (we’ve never seen the small hall/green room that packed), all the media wanted a piece of them. And deservedly so. Right now, the atmospheric black metal band is embraced by metalheads to progrockers to indiekids. Did they sell out? Fuck no, they’re just really good. And their last album, which got an 8.6 on Pitchfork (of all sites!), is an example of that.
The opening band, the occult Wolvserpent, are a name to keep in mind as well!

Who? Kellermensch? Is that a German version of Caro Emerald? It’s no wonder you haven’t heard from them yet. They’re from Denmark, so the press (with their antennae firmly towards the US and UK) never really wrote about them. But bear with us for just one minute. Because this is really cool. We think Kellermensch bring something unique in an overcrowded rockscene. This sits somwhere between rockmusic, indierock and folk with some metalscreams thrown in for good measure. It’s melancholic but firm, like if Nick Cave started a pop band, with a lead role for the gritty voice of frontman Sebastian Wolff.
And most of all: they’re a liveband to be reckoned with.

Little over a month ago, Miracle Fortress stood at the Incubate Festival bringing their psychedelic shoe-gazy pop to Tilburg(Photo above taken from the Incubate Festival). They gave an excellent show at the Kleine zaal at 013, singing songs from their latest album, Was I The Wave? They just released this new video for the song ‘Possession’, a very 90s cam recorded video about a couple in love. The song is great and so is the video! Have a look below:

Saviours call themselves a piss-angry-metal-band. So we’ll call them that as well. Their music ranges from 70′s metal to psychedelic, to heavy metal.
Supporting them are Anaphylactic Shock with our own Frank Kimenai amongst their ranks. But this isn’t us promoting our friend. No, AS consists of (ex-)members of Union Town, No Turning Back, Death Rivers and Restless Youth, so these guys no what they’re doing. It’s a monstrosity with hints of black-metal, old-skool punk and sludge.
According to their label Green & Wood were not content to regurgitate the trite Sabbath vis-a-vis Sleep formula imitated by droves of doom disciples. So theycrafted a sound that is infinitely richer and more organic than the overwhelming majority of its less progressive peers.
You’ll be warmly welcomed by Belgian band Your Highness with some hardrocking sludge-tunes.

Ready to rape your ears with some death-metal, goregrind, grindcore and every other music genre that sounds disgusting. In 013. This Thursday.

We saw Exhumed perform on last year’s Neurotic Deathfest and, well, it was loud and chaotic. So that’s a good thing.  Their new album ‘All Guts No Glory’ got released earlier this year on Relapse and should be right up the alley of death-metal fanatics.
But this is of course a bone-hard double bill with Cephalic Carnage. The ‘Hypergrind’-band (as they call themselves) is just as intense as Exhumed, but focusses more on grindcore than death-metal.
Extreme metalband Cliteater have performed on ZXZW 2006 (damn, is that already 5 years ago?), so of course we support them.

The last couple of tickets we gave away were all for pretty loud shows (Blood Ceremony, Ghost Brigade/Intronaut/Codes In The Clouds). All these tickets are gone by the way, so it’s useless to respond to these shows from now. Anyway, we thought it was time to give away some concerttickets for those who like their music a bit less loud. And rightfully so. Especially if these people like some quality roots music.

The great human beings at 013 Tilburg were so kind to give us 2 x 2 tickets for the Israel Nash Gripka show on October 12th! And as I said, those who like their quality roots music, know they want to be here. His 2009-debut ‘New York Town’ was a lovely album, but it drifted a bit under the radar. That’s not to be said of the bluesy follow-up ‘Barn Doors And Concrete Floors’ (that albumtitle breaths roots music), which is getting positive reviews all over the internet.

Finnish Ghost Brigade are definitely the most melodic with the impressive falsetto of frontman Manne Ikonen, this band will 100% appeal to fans of Cult Of Luna and Katatonia.
A Storm Of Light is the band of Josh Graham. Fans of Neurosis know who that is. A member of Neurosis. Exactly. Right. So you know you can only expect wickedness and darkness from this one.
And opener Intronaut is not the least either. They already impressed with first album ‘Void’ in 2006. And have built a steady name for themselves the past 5 years. Fans of Rosetta and The Ocean should check this out.

Ah! We love it! Our Incubate’s Outrageous Ticket Give-Away Bonanza gets more outrageous everyday!

First of all, 013 gave us yet another (!!) show with Kellermensch on Oktober 27th bringing their total to 7 (!!) shows to our ticket extravaganza! Make sure to congratulate them on their (0)13th birthday here!

And another popstage has something to celebrate! De Effenaar turned 40 this year! And you can congratulate and drink a beer with the lovely people on their 4o-year-anniversary party with D.A.F.! We’re sorry. But it was true. There was no piano left unplayed. People gathered around, made pictures and recorded with their phones. People laughing, having fun, it was absolutely awesome. But we figured that we can’t tell the people the magnitude of the project who weren’t in Tilburg. We had to show them. And so we began looking all over YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and everywhere else,  for good quality clips of people playing the pianos in Tilburg.
And then we came to this guy’s blog, Edwin Vossen, a journalism student at Fontys Tilburg. He made charts of the best (amateur) pianists playing on Incubate. We couldn’t have done it better ourselves. So please visit his site for Edwin’s top 25!

These tracks will be posted on our blog, daily and will be presented by Daedelus during his set at 013, Kleine Zaal this Saturday. He will be performing this special set from 21:15h – 22:15h. HEALTH have put Pictureplane’s Goth Star in the remix, where Pictureplane’s track already borrowed Fleetwood Mac’s classic ‘Seven Wonders’ riff. But instead of noising things up like we’re used of them, it’s actually kind of spacey with a lead role for the drums and vocals. We had our “Program complete” Incu Thursday last week, but with a festival with over 250 artists, program changes are unavoidable! Therefore, another Incu Thursday!

Remember, you can buy your tickets for Incubate 2011 here! And camping tickets as well. Bare in mind the camping tickets are limited!

First of all the bad news: The drummer from Heretic just left the band so will not perform. But we still have three great black/death bands on the bill for Thursday September 16: Aura Noir, Obliteration and Ketzer!

Also, Jos from Lärm has an infected eardrum and therefore can not play for a while on doctor’s advice. But, we have found a suitable replacement for them: the grinders from Groningen from Suffering Quota will replace them. Assück worship!

Grindcore from the North! Suffering Quota is a fairly new band from Groningen, but sound like they’ve been grinding around for ages already. The Assück reference from their name already indicates their biggest influence, along with bands like Phobia and His Hero Is Gone. If Wormrot is already marked on your time schedule, make sure you check these guys out as well!


We can also finally announce the dj’s for the Incubate afterparty in Cul de Sac! For those who don’t want to go home! Afterparties start right after the last band of the evening.

Opeens was er een telefoontje dat nogal dringend en ernstig was. De muziek moest uit. We dachten: wat kan er nu dringend zijn? Artiesten die tours afzeggen zijn vervangbaar. Als het over geld gaat lossen we het ook wel op. Wat is er nou ernstig als je middenin de productie van een festival zit?

Dan word je er opeens aan herinnerd: de dood is ernstig. De muziek is uit. “Die is lekker op vakantie” zeiden we vanochtend nog tegen elkaar. Het is ernstig als je opeens te horen krijgt dat iemand die je net nog mailde verongelukte.
Het is ernstig als iemand die je heel veel spreekt er opeens niet meer is. Het is ernstig als iemand aan wie je heel veel te danken hebt er opeens niet meer is. Nee, ernstig is misschien niet het goede woord.

Vandaag zijn we ontzettend geraakt door het overlijden van Guus van Hove en zijn vriendin, die hij vol trots altijd voorstelde en die duidelijk belangrijk in zijn leven en in zijn geluk was. Samen, op vakantie. Iets waar ze samen naar uitkeken.

Vanaf het eerste moment dat we met een vaag plannetje voor een vaag festival aan een vergadertafel in 013 aankwamen gaf Guus ons vertrouwen. In de tussentijd werd hij een van de belangrijkste partners in onze ontwikkeling. Kritisch als het moest. Maar altijd vol drive en vol geloof. Dankzij die instelling zijn we nu wat wij zijn en worden wij wat wij gaan worden. Het is dan pijnlijk als iemand die belangrijk voor jouw hele zijn is geweest er niet meer is, en niet meer kan zien wat hij mede mogelijk heeft gemaakt. Maar vooral pijnlijk is het omdat we een hele goede vriend verloren zijn. Door een stom ongeluk.

Guus is niet meer. Maar hij zal altijd een onderdeel van ons blijven uitmaken.

Just before his performance at Incubate 2011, Omar Souleyman from Syria will be releasing a live album including recordings of past shows in European countries! You can listen to some clips of this record on Cargo Records. The album will be released on September 4th.

Dutch jazz drummer and multi-instrumentalist Han Bennink will be coming to Tilburg. He is not only known for his enthusiasm, but also makes sure every show is unique because of the random objects he gets on stage just before his show. He will give a show at 013 on September 14, but we haven’t forgotten about the little ones: on Friday September 16, Bennink will give a special performance for children.

If you love drums, please make sure you will be in the Paradox on the weekend. American jazz drummer Chris Corsano has collaborated with former Incubate acts and will now be hosting the entire weekend! During the weekend he will be joined by various artists, among whom Christine Sehnaoui (France, altsax, Friday) and Mats Gustafsson (Sweden, sax, Sunday).

Other jazz artists included on the line-up are American jazz pianist Matthew Shipp, sax player Charles Gayle and pianist Liam Noble, so make sure you will absorb your portion of jazz during Incubate 2011!
