One of our personal favorite albums of 2012 so far is the record of Young Magic. This trio headed by Australian Isaac Emmanual who recorded al lot of different sounds during his trip around the world. That’s why album title Melt is definitely the best way to describe this record. A weird mixture of psychedelic dreampop mixed with chillwave and contrary African rhythms. The result is a really stunning record, especially for fans of Yeasayer’s debut All Hour Cymbals.

Now the good part is that this band is coming to Tilburg this friday to play their album live at 013. And now the best part; the entrance is for free! So we can understand that you can’t go to every event that we are recommend, but this time it’s for free so make sure you don’t miss this. Besides friday, make sure you’ll be at 013 on Thursday as well; Yukon Blonde is playing.

Na een ontbijtje aan het strand gaan we weer. Je hebt hier vroege shows, dan even niks en dan begint het avondprogramma.
Amatorski speelt om 14 uur in de Green Door Room een set van 25 minuten. De moeite waard voor de band om de plas even over te steken. En ze maken het ook wel waar. Verzorgd en Geconcentreerd. Met de beperkte middelen die sommige podia bieden weet de band een volle Green Door room te boeien. De ffijne uitgesponnen en goed gearrangeerde nummers komen binnen. Muisstil op momenten. Dan een welgemeend applaus. Dan ‘s avonds na een etentje met de Mojo-jongens op weg naar Haim in Audio, een club die normaal dienst doet als disco. Net op tijd om buiten een te lange rij te voorkomen. Er schijnt veel om te doen te zijn. Wat zelfovertuiging is er, maar dat komt vanzelf als er veel om je te doen is. De liedjes beklijven niet echt echter. De drie vrouwen met een mannelijke drummer weten het publiek wel wat voor zich te winnen, de liedjes doen nog niks helaas.
Trust uit Toronto in audio above dan. Helaas ook hier een niet waargemaakte hype. Met indie-vocalen over net te platte house-beats alleen kom je er niet meer. De grote barriers in een zaal waar 150 mensen in kunnen en een podium van 20 cm hoog doen ook geen goed moet ik zeggen.
DZ Deathrays uit Australië doen het wel zoals het zou moeten. In Horatios zie ik de eerste crowdsurfers, mooi als dat gebeurd op de pier, zo’n tien meter boven de zee. Hun trashpop wordt met alles wat de band heeft het publiek ingeslingerd. En dan verdien je ookzo’n publiek.
Na middernacht lijkt Brighton helaas over te gaan in een platte uitgaansstad. Zelfs de clubs waar misschien nog 1 of 2 acts spelen vinden de rij met zuipende stappers belangrijker dan de zogenaamde ‘delegates’. In de rij dus. Gelukkig is Sticky Frog zo vriendelijk om ons snel binnen te laten. Cave Painting wat door moet gaan als fleet foxes en yeasayer doet echter in geen geval wat de bio beloofd. Maar aangezien het vliegtuig over een pqar uur vertrekt is het tijd voor nog 1 borrel in queens, het hotel waar de lobby tijdens TGE de hangout is voor de aanwezige muziekbuss-mensen. TGE, een niet hele hoge score met nieuwe ontdekkingen, nieuwe inzichten en ideeën daarentegen genoeg!

We always encourage new infinitives in our beautiful city. Especially if it’s something with superior dance music. Because besides us and 013 there aren’t so many organisations who are paying attention to alternative techno or live electronic music.

That’s why we’re happy to see that the first edition of Kindergarten will take place tomorrow at Stadspark Tilburg. The organisation of Kindergarten did their best to make this first edition to a success if you’re looking to the line-up. One of our personal favorites is the French producer Kavinsky who made together with Daft Punk‘s Guy-Manuel the track Nightcall, which became known by the Drive OST. From Lektroluv-records are coming the Belgium neighbours from The Subs and Sound Of Stereo who both playing a live-set. Other cool acts are Mickey Moonlight, Secret Cinema and localhero’s Schoolplein & Skanketron it seems that tomorrow Tilburg is gonna turn to a playground. Cause with a tagline as Never grow up! and the trailer that you can see below you can image that the expectations are high.

In 2009 AU (pronounced as ay-yoo) performed during Incubate in the Batcave (now Stage01) at 013. Now, almost 3 years later, AU switched to the The Leaf Label (Hometapes outside EU) and released their first album on that label ‘Both Lights’.

Now, after the first released single ‘Solid Gold’, they released a stunning new animated video for the song ‘OJ’. The acid-soaked video was directed by Japanese film-maker Takafumi Tsuhiya. We’ve told you earlier before that this Thursday it’s our second edition of Incubate Scene Report. Now we’ve got a special announcement to make: Because Sleep Party People and Pinkunoizu is gonna play the same night in Tilburg, we decided, in collaboration with 013, that we are gonna mix both events and turn it into one free mini-festival.

The night from ISC: Groningen in Cul de Sac is not really gonna change. Still the cool bands from Groningen Wolvon and Earth Control are planned to play that evening. But now the good part; 013 decided to make the entrance of their concert with those cool Danish bands for free. And yes, because their both from Copenhagen we’re gonna turn in into an Incubate Scene Report: Copenhagen edition.

If you had read this Spotifriday from a couple of weeks ago you would know that Sleep Party People has got a new album: We Were Drifting On A Sad Song. That’s why the Danish bunny’s are coming back to the Netherlands and will play together with Pinkunoizu at 013 this Thursday.

“Twisted bunnies make beautiful alienating music” is what 3voor12 wrote about the gig that Sleep Party People gave at Paradox during Incu11. Also in Groningen last January, during Eurosonic, the guys, under leadership from Brian Batz, did make a big impression with their music where they are mixing shoegaze with dreampop.  Another Danish band that made quite an impression during Eurosonic was Pinkunoizu, another Incu11-artist who will play in Tilburg this Thursday. With a statement “Never come full circle, to move hazily in bended ellipses” describes probably perfectly what the band is doing and is standing for. After successful editions in Utrecht, Amsterdam, Rotterdam & Groningen NON-Records is finally coming to Tilburg. This friday Amsterdam’s finest new electronic recordlabel is having a labelnight at 013 where most of the label’s artist are present; Palmbomen, HyperHyper, Renkas and founder of the label Bear Damen. Marius, known from his last year released EP Things We Did, is also coming this friday and is doing a live show. This evening is also the afterparty from bkkc project See-A-Sound where we posted about a few months ago.

Sleep Party People - We Were Drifting On A Sad Song

After this post we probably don’t need to tell you anymore that Copenhagen is the new Brooklyn.  From the New Way of Danish Fuck You-movement acts like Iceage, War and Lower (who will play all at Incu12!) till dreamy shoegaze; Copenhagen got it all. From the last categories are the rabbits from Sleep Party People. This project by Brian Batz played at our festival last year and after their seftitled debut which they released in 2010 they are back with a brand new record called We Were Drifting on a Sad Song. This album looks like your stepping into a dream world; They’re using vocals that sounds like they borrowed from their Swedish neighbours The Knife, using influences from postrock  and at the same time also trying to make pop songs. One thing is for certain; you’re not gonna find another album like this.

Just a reminder for people who really adore this album; Sleep Party People is coming back to Tilburg in a few weeks; together with fellow Danish band Pinkunoizu they will play in 013 at the 26th of April.

Sleepy Sun - Spine Hits

Maybe the new Sleepy Sun record Spine Hits sounds a bit different from the two predecessor albums Embrace and breakthrough record Fever and that’s because your maybe missing a female voice. After a succesful year in 2010 co-leadsinger Rachel Fannan announced that she left the band because she wanted to pursue her solo career. But despaite the loss of Fannan the band from San Fransisco still wanted to continue making cool records and now, two years later, they released Spine Hits. This record is more compact; the long-drawn-out songs have disappeared and sound a bit lighter and more bright instead of the cumbersome sounds of earlier days.

Black Dice – Mr. Impossible

The experimental Brooklyn band Black Dice is founded already 15 years ago, but with their new record, Mr. Impossible, they sounded like their newbies again. After releasing records on James Murphy‘s DFA label and Animal Collective‘s Paw Tracks label Black Dice released Mr. Impossible on the Ribbon label. With their 6th record Black Dice is mixing weird 7/4 time signature with danceable tunes. Our friends from 3voor12 called the music “Gang Gang Dance without being too spacey” and “an evil version of Animal Collective”. Well.. we couldn’t express it ourself any better.

Amadou & Mariam - Folila

It’s sounds like the ultimate  feelgood fiction story, but it’s reality; Amadou & Mariam are a blind couple from Mali, Africa who in the 80s started to make music together. After teaching, making music and touring in the last decade the couple worked together with Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz, etc), Manu Chao & Scissor Sisters. This week they released their 6th official album and again with some help from a lot of known people. For the record Folila Amadou & Mariam worked together with artists including Santigold, Tunde & Kyp from TV On The Radio, Theophilus London, Nick Zinner from Yeah Yeah Yeahs and celebrities. The result is a really nice afropop album where traditional African music and Western pop, blues and rap music comes together in one unique combination.

Choir Of Young Believers – Rhine Gold

And after Sleep Party People Choir Of Young Believers is the second band from Denmark in this week’s Spotifriday, but not without a reason. The band, formed by Lake Placid guitar player Jannis Noya Makrigiannis, sounds with their new record Rhine Gold more wide-oriented, with influences from not-Western music. We can understand that this new record is not gonna get you by the first spin, but give it some time; it’s a grower. The seven-piece band sounds on this record more balanced and also this record is the perfect soundtrack for your spring.

After twenty-five editions the organization of dubstep party Trigga is calling it a day. This saturday, the 7th of April, the last edition of Trigga is gonna be held.

To make this last edition to a success the organization arraigned the coming of Killawat from the UK. Other dj’s who will play this saturday are Coco Bryce, Dubjunk, (Bas) Bots, Just So Nah and Cintasoul. Of course residents and organisers DMDN and our own Ghosryda (aka The Musical Dictator) will play as well. Tickets are still for sale for only €6 and can be bought here. For an interview with Sjak van Bussel (aka DMDN and owner of Antenne) about why this going to be the last edition can be read here (in Dutch).

Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark and is the city with the most inhabitants of the whole country.With more than a million citizens, it’s more than likely that at least a few people get together to make great music. In the past a few bands from Copenhagen have made it ‘big’. Acts like The Raveonettes, The Asteroids Galaxy Tour or Alphabeat have played in the Netherlands more than once and have been sure to gain some media attention.

Bands from Copenhagen haven’t been strangers for Incubate either, in the earlier editions we had: Die Weisse Rose, Gud er Kvinde, Of The Wand And The Moon, Obstacles, Thulebasen, Sleep Party People, Pinkunoizu, Girlseeker and Iceage(to bad it got cancelled).

But lately more names have been seeping through the blogosphere. There is the shoegaze-y bunny’s from Sleep Party People, who with an upcoming release are sure to catch the attention of a broader audience. Also the young punks from Iceage have been making quite a name for themselves. With their 2011 release ‘New Brigade’ and energetic live shows, they have shown that they are more than capable. More recently When Saints Go Machine seem to be heading into the right direction. And as it mostly is with good bands: there is a lot more where they came from.

Since I’ve never been in Copenhagen it’s hard to say what the atmosphere is like. Or what neighbourhoods are definitely worth checking out. I can’t tell you which bars and venues are the best, but for that information you can also buy a travel guide. During my research I have been able to divide the Copenhagen musicscene in smaller bite-able chunks.

There seems to be a really vibrant punk/doom/metal scene in Copenhagen. With Iceage as one of the biggest names this moment. These guys seem to be part of a much larger scene in their hometown. Mostly being really underground and DIY, it’s hard to find any virtual information about this.

There are a few labels that seem to focus on this scene. For example Posh Isolation. They run a small store from a basement, which is only open on Fridays and upon request. They sell limited releases. Not every artist they release is easy to find. One of the more bleak and nihilistic artist they release is Damien Dubrovnik.

A bigger label running from Copenhagen is Escho, setting up shows and releasing music for a lot of local bands. At the end of March they will release a 7” for Lower a hard-hitting punkrock outfit in the same vein as Iceage.
Also the Copenhagen-based record label/zine Dogmeat covers a lot of what’s going on inside Copenhagen’s darkest underground.

Dogmeat curated their own DANISH PUNK FUCK YOU showcase at the Distortion Festival last year, this was covered by Altered Zones and is a good read to find more about the local punk scene and bands. Within this scene there is also Sexdrome, harsh noise-punk. One of the members of Sexdrome (who also co-runs Posh Isolation) teamed up with the Iceage frontman to form War, whom are being released on Sacred Bones. War’s sound is hard to describe, but Sacred Bones manages to give it a good try: “lo-fi post-apocalyptic punk dirge and early Chicago house music”. Definitely worth checking out!
There is a lot more going on than can fit in one post, so some other interesting bands to check out are: Girlseeker, Nightfever, and Pagan Youth. Watch the following film to get a got impression of Distortion Festival and the atmosphere.

Besides all this dark and disturbing sounds, Copenhagen also has a brighter side. There’s a large number of indie bands. There is a lot of alternative folk/post-rock influenced music. With a band like Efterklang being one of the bigger. There is a lot of interesting music surfacing at this moment. One of the more interesting labels in this genre is It Was Gnarled, run by the 21-year old Jesper Hviid. The label features only two bands, but they are a good example of what’s going on within this scene. The first band is Hunch Bettors, a four-piece with folky post-rock tunes, definitely a band to keep an eye on. The second band is indiepop outfit With No Arms and Legs. Up-beat songs for fans of a more positive-sounding Arcade Fire. Also check out: Treefight for Sunlight and Dad Rocks!.

When it comes to more dreamlike bands, shoegazing and freaking their way to our ears then the most interesting examples are probably Sleep Party People and Pinkunoizu. The first is a band around songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Brian Batz. With his effected and filtered vocals, layered guitars and slow-but-steady rhythm they have gained a lot of praise and played multiple festivals and venues in Holland. Pinkunoizu are more up-tempo and freaked-out. Really shoegazing, as they play very large pedal boards. Weird rhythms and crazy guitar sounds combine into something mesmerizing and hypnotizing. Both bands are touring together at the moment and will attend the Netherlands 3 times, once in the 013 in Tilburg.

There is also room for some more noisy/experimental/alternative music. The Copenhagen-based label Red Tape has a large roster of Copenhagen bands, be sure to sneak a peek, but not everything is equally interesting. The band that really caught my attention on this label is the awesome-but-weird Governor of Alaska. It’s instrumental music with tribal drums and noisy guitars.

Thulebasen is one of the most interesting bands from Copenhagen, psychedelic songs that can range up to ten minutes. They also played on Incubate in 2010. Thulebasen are connected with a lot of bands in Copenhagen. Having also released material on Tambourhinoceros, just as Iceage and Treefight For Sunlight. The singer of Thulebasen also owns the label Escho, which has been mentioned above. They are currently recording near Joshua Tree.

Be sure to check out some of the stuff on Pad & Pen Records, which ranges from noise to dreampop. HIGHLY recommended are: The Beardy Durfs, Mimas and Keith Canisius.

This post can’t even begin to capture all the interesting, beautiful, weird and creative stuff that’s going on in København. There is so, so, so much more.

The band Rocket From The Tombs was founded in mid seventies, but unfortunately after a few years they split up. They only left us some demos and bootlegs. After almost 30 years the record label Smog Veil Records did put all this demos and bootlegs together and rereleased it. The band did get finally the exposure what they deserved. In a few years time they get a kind of cult status and the guys came back together to play gigs again. Last year they also released a new album called Barfly.

This protopunk band is going to play a show in 013 at 12 of May. The band Richie Dagger, who played last year at Incubate, is the support act for this night. Check here for more information about this evening.

The cream of the crop of the Dutch metal scene Textures is hitting the road again.  Together with the British metal band Sylosis they’ll visit eleven european venues for an European tour. The last gig is on 11 March at the 013 here in Tilburg, and we are giving away 2×2 tickets.

The 2 lovely ladies that organised the We Eat INcubate, Joanne and Sanne, got great responses about the Eat-In. So they decided to make a new one: The Winter Eat-In! And you should all come. It’s on January 28th, at the Bomenlounge. You may know that place as the FAXX-building. And if you don’t know that either, it’s Dunantstraat 1 in Tilburg. It’s the street next to 013 Popcentre. It starts at 14:00.

If you don’t know what an Eat-In is, it’s simple. Everybody makes something to eat at home with at least one biological ingredient. You bring it to the Eat-In and put it on the table. And then everyone can pick whatever they want! Salads, desserts, carpaccio’s, you name it. So we hope to see you there with your best meal!

Serena Maneesh did a great job at Incubate in 2010. We were able to record the audio of the show they did back then and now you can listen to a number of the songs they played on our soundcloud!

‘Serena’ is an adaptation of the Norwegian word for veil. Veil is a very diverse word, which fits with Serena-Maneesh. From hiding to holding back to conceal something. Serena could also mean serenity, serene. There are all these connotations. Then you see glints and you see something incredible, but it’s in the moment. That is why you can see the melody through a stressful storm of noise. It’s through this veil.

‘Maneesh’ is a rewriting of the Norwegian word ‘manesje,’ which is the area around a stage. If you look at a stage in a circus or opera, there’s an area surrounding the stage containing a lot of elements. Small, subtle elements that make the stage presence that much more powerful. That’s incredible.

If ever two words conjured the elemental nature of this band’s sound, they are Serena Maneesh. Listen to their Incubate 2010 live-set below and enjoy the deep and dark music from Serena Maneesh! Btw, if you like Serena Maneesh, also check out Le Corbeau.

But we’ve got one show left. And not the least: Wolves In The Throne Room!
Ever since their first show at Roadburn turned into one sweating mass (we’ve never seen the small hall/green room that packed), all the media wanted a piece of them. And deservedly so. Right now, the atmospheric black metal band is embraced by metalheads to progrockers to indiekids. Did they sell out? Fuck no, they’re just really good. And their last album, which got an 8.6 on Pitchfork (of all sites!), is an example of that.
The opening band, the occult Wolvserpent, are a name to keep in mind as well!

Who releases us?

Who? Kellermensch? Is that a German version of Caro Emerald? It’s no wonder you haven’t heard from them yet. They’re from Denmark, so the press (with their antennae firmly towards the US and UK) never really wrote about them. But bear with us for just one minute. Because this is really cool. We think Kellermensch bring something unique in an overcrowded rockscene. This sits somwhere between rockmusic, indierock and folk with some metalscreams thrown in for good measure. It’s melancholic but firm, like if Nick Cave started a pop band, with a lead role for the gritty voice of frontman Sebastian Wolff.
And most of all: they’re a liveband to be reckoned with.

And we’re not talking any band here. We’re talking about The Ex, the godfathers of Dutch anarchopunk! And they didn’t stop there. Over the years, influences of noise, Ethiopian Jazz, improvision and ethnical music enriched their sound. So that makes it even more suprising that this band is bigger outside than inside The Netherlands. This is a band we should cherish!

Little over a month ago, Miracle Fortress stood at the Incubate Festival bringing their psychedelic shoe-gazy pop to Tilburg(Photo above taken from the Incubate Festival). They gave an excellent show at the Kleine zaal at 013, singing songs from their latest album, Was I The Wave? They just released this new video for the song ‘Possession’, a very 90s cam recorded video about a couple in love. The song is great and so is the video! Have a look below:

Saviours call themselves a piss-angry-metal-band. So we’ll call them that as well. Their music ranges from 70′s metal to psychedelic, to heavy metal.
Supporting them are Anaphylactic Shock with our own Frank Kimenai amongst their ranks. But this isn’t us promoting our friend. No, AS consists of (ex-)members of Union Town, No Turning Back, Death Rivers and Restless Youth, so these guys no what they’re doing. It’s a monstrosity with hints of black-metal, old-skool punk and sludge.
According to their label Green & Wood were not content to regurgitate the trite Sabbath vis-a-vis Sleep formula imitated by droves of doom disciples. So theycrafted a sound that is infinitely richer and more organic than the overwhelming majority of its less progressive peers.
You’ll be warmly welcomed by Belgian band Your Highness with some hardrocking sludge-tunes.

The last couple of tickets we gave away were all for pretty loud shows (Blood Ceremony, Ghost Brigade/Intronaut/Codes In The Clouds). All these tickets are gone by the way, so it’s useless to respond to these shows from now.
