Now we’ve got a special announcement to make: Because Sleep Party People and Pinkunoizu is gonna play the same night in Tilburg, we decided, in collaboration with 013, that we are gonna mix both events and turn it into one free mini-festival.

The night from ISC: Groningen in Cul de Sac is not really gonna change. Still the cool bands from Groningen Wolvon and Earth Control are planned to play that evening. But now the good part; 013 decided to make the entrance of their concert with those cool Danish bands for free. And yes, because their both from Copenhagen we’re gonna turn in into an Incubate Scene Report: Copenhagen edition.

Time schedule of this Thursday:
20.30 – 21.00 Earth Control @ Cul de Sac
21.10 – 21.55 Sleep Party People @ 013
22.05 – 22.50 Wolvon @ Cul de Sac
23.00 – 23.45 Pinkunoizu @ 013

If you had read this Spotifriday from a couple of weeks ago you would know that We Were Drifting On A Sad Song. That’s why the Danish bunny’s are coming back to the Netherlands and will play together with Pinkunoizu at 013 this Thursday.

“Twisted bunnies make beautiful alienating music” is what Paradox during Incu11. Also in Groningen last January, during Eurosonic, the guys, under leadership from Brian Batz, did make a big impression with their music where they are mixing shoegaze with dreampop. Another Danish band that made quite an impression during Eurosonic was Pinkunoizu, another Incu11-artist who will play in Tilburg this Thursday. With a statement “Never come full circle, to move hazily in bended ellipses” describes probably perfectly what the band is doing and is standing for. If not, make sure you’ll read more about this band at this post we probably don’t need to tell you anymore that Copenhagen is the new Brooklyn. From the Sleep Party People. This project by Brian Batz played at our festival last year and after their seftitled debut which they released in 2010 they are back with a brand new record called We Were Drifting on a Sad Song. This album looks like your stepping into a dream world; They’re using vocals that sounds like they borrowed from their Swedish neighbours The Knife, using influences from postrock and at the same time also trying to make pop songs. One thing is for certain; you’re not gonna find another album like this.

Just a reminder for people who really adore this album; Sleep Party People is coming back to Tilburg in a few weeks; together with fellow Danish band Pinkunoizu they will play in 013 at the 26th of April.

Sleepy Sun - Spine Hits

Maybe the new Sleepy Sun record Spine Hits sounds a bit different from the two predecessor albums Embrace and breakthrough record Fever and that’s because your maybe missing a female voice. After a succesful year in 2010 co-leadsinger Rachel Fannan announced that she left the band because she wanted to pursue her solo career. But despaite the loss of Fannan the band from San Fransisco still wanted to continue making cool records and now, two years later, they released Spine Hits. This record is more compact; the long-drawn-out songs have disappeared and sound a bit lighter and more bright instead of the cumbersome sounds of earlier days.

Black Dice is founded already 15 years ago, but with their new record, Mr. Impossible, they sounded like their newbies again. After releasing records on James Murphy‘s Ribbon label. With their 6th record Black Dice is mixing weird 7/4 time signature with danceable tunes. Our friends from 3voor12 called the music “Mali, Africa who in the 80s started to make music together. After teaching, making music and touring in the last decade the couple worked together with Scissor Sisters. This week they released their 6th official album and again with some help from a lot of known people. For the record Folila Amadou & Mariam worked together with artists including Santigold, Tunde & Kyp from TV On The Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and celebrities. The result is a really nice afropop album where traditional African music and Western pop, blues and rap music comes together in one unique combination.

Choir Of Young Believers is the second band from Denmark in this week’s Spotifriday, but not without a reason. The band, formed by Lake Placid guitar player Jannis Noya Makrigiannis, sounds with their new record Rhine Gold more wide-oriented, with influences from not-Western music. We can understand that this new record is not gonna get you by the first spin, but give it some time; it’s a grower. The seven-piece band sounds on this record more balanced and also this record is the perfect soundtrack for your spring.

<iframe

Going to see The Boss tonight, I’m one of the lucky few. Never saw Springsteen live before, so I was in for a treat! Amazing! Nevermind the elaborate schedule of bands that I wanted to see this evening, put everything aside and go see the Boss in the Moody Theatre, a 2500 capacity hall. That was my foresight for the evening. But first, another afternoon of checking out bands ahead of me.

Cycled downtown, got my Springsteen ticket, and dropped by the 3voor12 radio studio in the convention centre. 3voor12 is covering the festival live this year, with 6 hours of live radio each day. Great initiative! After saying hello, I cycled up 24 blocks (my exercise for the day) for the Austin Psych Fest party, which had an insane line-up. I came to see one of my favorite bands at the moment, one I’ve never seen live. Purling Hiss, a lo-fi psychedelic garagerock band. They played a short and loud set of really raw and intense rock, including my favorite song Run From The City,… I love rock trio’s.

I coincidently ran into Romain Manival of a small upcoming French bookingagency, that books Amen Dunes and some more of the psychedelic rock bands. I was supposed to meet him yesterday at the Sacred Bones showcase, but missed him. Funny how you always meet the right people at the right place, in a festival of 100.000’s of people. Saw some more bands, like Crystal Antlers. Other bands on the bill were Amen Dunes, Psychic Ills, Crocodiles, Wet Hair, Royal Baths and shitloads more. These sort of line-ups is impossible to bring together in the Netherlands, but here, everything is possible.

It was almost 6 pm, so it was time to cycle downtown again, and make my way to the Springsteen gig. I expected big lines in the Moody Theatre, but everything went surprisingly smooth. These people are professionals. The venue was a nice, compact room, with 2 stories of balconies, and it is fully equipped for live recordings for television and radio. A lot of live music tv is made here, given the pictures of all the artists on the wall. Impressive.

After seeing The Low Anthem, which was quite ok, I got a bit bored, because the wait was quite long. It was supposed to start at 7pm, but Springsteen started at 9.15, with two supports. Didn’t know that, otherwise I could have seen some more bands. Had a good chat with Dutch Springsteen fan #1, Ton Engelshoven of OOR magazine, who had seen him more than 20 times in the last couple of decades. He was extremely excited, so was I. Anticipation was high, and when Springsteen started I actually felt a bit nervous and got goosebumps all over. I will not review the show, since you’ll be able to find plenty of better reviews online, but let’s just say that he brought interesting guests (Tom Morello, Arcade Fire, Jimmy Cliff and Erik Burdon), and I have never seen a 64-year-old stagedive as smoothly as the Boss. It was an amazing experience that I will charise for the rest of my life. BRUUUCE! BRUUUUUUUCE! BRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCE!

I went downtown again and saw a couple more bands. Went to see dutch grime/dubstep/hiphop act Dope DOD, which was pretty ok, but the US crowd really needs to get familiar with European dubstep I think, because they didn’t quite get it. Dropped by the Lexington London showcase real quick to say hello to Stacey, the owner. She told me the showcase was rescheduled to a bigger venue by the SXSW organization, because of high anticipation for the turnout. Too bad it was half empty now…even for local heroes Ringo Deathstar. I rushed down to the Mohawk for the Secretly Canadian showcase, saw Sharon van Etten, which was quite ok, and a lot of friends from Utrecht / Amsterdam. So after some drinks and a failed attempt or 2 to find an afterparty, it was time to gome home again.

[Report] Frank at SXSW: Part two

Culture

3voor12

AJ Novello

Amen Dunes

ATP Minehead

austin

bad brains

Barbarella

Beauty Bar

Bleached

Buffalo Billiards

Charles Bradly

Clockwork Orange

Converse

cro-mags

crocodiles

Elysium

erik luyten

Ev’Hands

fear

frank kimenai

Frank Satink

Fun Lovin' Criminals

Goomah

Graig Ahead

hardly art

Headwalks

High on Fire

Hotel Vegas

Incubate

Jacuzzi Boys

john joseph

K-Holes

Lee Fields & The Expressions

Lee Ving

Leeway

Mackie

Matt Pike

mirel wagner

modern life is war

Nachtmystium

Night Beats

no wave

Psychic Ills

Red 7

Roll The Tank

Sacred Bones

saviours

Shimmering Stars

Show You No Mercy

sick of it all

skateboards

Sleepover

sony

stagedives

Static Jigs

Steve Dolemancino

sxsw

SXSW 2012

sxsw report

SXSW12

TeePee records

texas

The Fresh & Onlys

the men

the pains of being pure at heart

The Scoot Inn

The Stage on Sixt

The Stage on Sixth

thee oh sees

Thrasher Magazine

vpro

We Gotta Know

Whirr

will lindsay

Willem van Zeeland

wolves in the throne room

World Peace

Wyland Miles

Xray Eyeballs

Frank Kimenai is in Austin, Texas right now where is visiting the SXSW festival. He is so kind to let us know what we are missing up there. Today: Report of his second day.

My day started, slightly hangover, with a trip to The Scoot Inn venue at the east side. Scoot In is a really cool shed with a roofed stage on the parking lot, and a huge-ass skateramp besides it. Thrasher Magazine and Converse a throwing a couple of free day parties there. My friend Steve Dolemancino, who used to work for TeePee records is marketing manager of Converse nowadays, and hand-picked a lot of cool bands for the show. Today’s line-up is insane: Cro-Mags, Saviours, Nachtmystium, but above all, legendary and notorious punk band FEAR are playing.

Bumped into a lot of friends at the venue, the guys from Saviours and Nachtmystium, and some other types I haven’t seen in quite a while. It was a really mixed crowed, young kids and old punks rocking out together. It’s heartwarming to see 10-year-old kids in Cro-Mags t-shirts on the shoulder of their heavily tattooed punk rock dad, singing along together or skating the ramp together. A lot of shows at SXSW are 21 up, but this is an all age show, and I think that’s a good thing. You see people like John Joseph, singer of the Cro-Mags, taking time to talk to these youngsters, explaining them what he stands for, giving them autographs and taking pictures, and the fathers of these young kids watching with a big smile on their face. Great initiative of Converse and Thrasher to throw a party like this.

Band wise, the quality of the program fluctuated from boring to insane, and from yawning to goosebumps. First band I saw was Whirr, a young stoner/shoegaze/metal band, reminding me a bit of The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, but 10 times as heavy. Nice, but not great. Modern Life Is War is a kind of hardcore/metal band, but they bored the shit out of me. Too much of a forced image. Next up, Saviours. Always good, always delivering, and always in a good mood. Heavy, pounding riff rock with classic heavy metal (twin)guitar leads. Kick Ass. After Saviours, time for the legendary Cro-Mags. The all-star line-up of the band is already something special. Of course John Joseph on vocals, Graig Ahead (Sick Of It All) on bass, AJ Novello (Leeway) on guitar and Mackie (Fun Lovin’ Criminals) on drums. They kicked of with the Clockwork Orange intro, and just hearing it makes me shiver and gives me goosebumps. Then “We Gotta Know” kicked in, followed relentlessly with World Peace and Show You No Mercy. Crowd went insane. Headwalks, stagedives, skateboards in the moshpit. It was a madhouse. They played a short and tight set with some Bad Brains songs and Leeway songs aswell. Great!

Next up, and from a completely different musical tradition, was the psychedelic black metal band Nachtmystium. Just found out that a buddy of mine, Will Lindsay, who used to play in Wolves In The Throne Room, is playing bass with them. Always nice to see him, great guy. Nachtmystium played a kick-ass, but really noisy and harsh sounding set. What striked me was that the attendance wasn’t that high. The indoor room was filled to the roof during Saviours, but during Nachtmystium, there were maybe 70 people there. In Europe, this would definitely be the other way around.

“This song goes out to everybody that has ever the misfortune of being in New York City”. “All I want is MORE BEER!” ,“Aaaaaaaaaaaai Love Living in the City”. One two three four, One two three four, One two three four! Just a couple of FEAR intro’s. These old punk rockers were headlining the Thrasher party, and it was amazing. Notorious loudmouth Lee Ving looked like an old Chinese Restaurant owner, combined with a biker image, and he was funny as hell. Rude, politically outspoken, and obnoxious. Just the way it should be. They played a short set of about 40 minutes, and all the hits were played. The crowd was rowdy, throwing beer, pogoing and seeing old punk rockers going mental is alway cool. Perfect way to end this afternoon.

After a bite to eat and some coffee, the evening program was on. I had a big schedule of about 25 shows, so a busy night ahead. Met up with Frank Satink of Goomah/Ev’Hands early in the evening, we both wanted to see the Mirel Wagner show at Red 7, but there was a queue of about 50 meters, and apparently, it was a private party by Sony. This annoyed a lot of people. Just don’t put the show in the schedule if you are not allowed to get in, I’d say.. Next up was the Sacred Bones showcase at Elysium. They had six bands playing. First up was Wyland Miles, guitarist for The Fresh & Onlys, doing his own music. It was quite ok, sounded a bit British/romantic ‘80’s poppy, but I wasn’t that impressed. Thee Oh Sees were up at Red 7, but after queuing for another 15 minutes, I came into an almost empty venue (why the queue, people?) and saw a band called Static Jigs, which were boring. Red 7 has another stage as well, but no Thee Oh Sees there too, some band called Roll The Tanks played and they weren’t interesting at all. It’s a general thing that annoys me during SXSW. The total lack of information in the venues. No info about line-up changes, no schedules inside, no signing to the different rooms in a building. The service level is pretty low here. Not a good thing.

I went to Hotel Vegas, where the Hardly Art showcase was on, with great bands like Xray Eyeballs and Jacuzzi Boys. I went to see Shimmering Stars, but they were boring and totally uninspired. Decided to go to Barbarella to see Sleepover, but they haven’t even built up when they were supposed to start playing. My carefully prepared schedule was now definitely fucked. Not a great way to start the evening. I went back to Elysium for Amen Dunes, a psych pop trio on Sacred Bones records. The Elysium is quite a big venue, holds about 400 people and I think it was a bit too big for Sacred Bones. Attendance was quite good, about 200 people for the show, but I think I prefer a bit smaller room fort his. Another thing that popped to mind is that if you throw a showcase for your label, you should make a party out of it. Sacred Bones programmed 5 bands, but didn’t do much about the venue. No banners, bu an ugly venue-logo beamed behind the stage. Ideas like a presenter, an in between bands DJ, a nice info- and merchbooth, that would make the showcase much better. But, generally speaking, the bands were all good, and that’s the most important thing. Amen Dunes played a nice show, getting louder and more intense while the set progressed. And his vocals are really good.

Next up was Bleached at the Beauty Bar patio, which, after 10 minutes of queuing to get in the venue, was apparently full, so another 10 minutes to waste. Information, people. Inform your public! Decided to go back to Red 7, where Lee Fields & The Expressions were supposed to be on at 11. Came in just prior to 1, only to see that Thee Oh Sees were in the middle of their set. Schedule wise, this was of course another fuck-up, but I got the chance to see Thee Oh Sees which was the upside of it. They were great, energetically, two-drummer outfit, great stage presence. Enjoyed every minute of it, together with Willem van Zeeland of VPRO’s 3voor12, who had an amazing time as well.

We decided to wait for Lee Fields, and after a 30 minute change-over, they started. You know you are seeing a professional band, when the first note they hit, is already the right note. Everything was balanced, sound was amazing, and Lee’s stage entrance was highly anticipated. But, to be honest, after 3 or 4 songs, I did get a little bored. It sounded really retro and all, but I could’t pay attention much longer. I think that retro-soul wise, I really prefer Charles Bradly over Lee Fields.

I went to see Crocodiles after that, at The Stage on Sixth venue. A young, wavy pop punk band from England. They were ok, but they couldn’t capture my attention, so I decided to cycle to Hotel Vegas again, where K-Holes played. And boy, that was the right decision. K-Holes are a No Wave punk band, looking like a bunch of ‘80’s goth/pop musicians in black, with an excentric blond singer as frontwomen. They played an energetic set of loud No Wave with great saxophone leads, and awesome bass playing. Together with Thee Oh Sees, the best band of the evening.

Back to Elysium to see Psychic Ills, which were ok, but nothing special going on, so decided to go see High On Fire presenting some new songs from their upcoming album. Once again, they didn’t pay any attention to the schedule, so High On Fire started 45 minutes late. The sound was horrible, and I decided to leave after one song. High On Fire is absolutely one of my favorite bands ever, but this was just not good. I’ll give m another chance though. Oh, and Matt Pike was not looking healthy at all. He had a beer belly the size of a beachball. Hope he’s doing ok..

Time for the last two bands of today which were Night Beats at Buffalo Billiards (huge room for a noise/garage trio, attendance of 25 people in a room for 500, show was great, band amazing and awkward) and closing act was The Men at the Sacred Bones showcase again. I saw a rather uninspired show by them in Rotterdam a while back, but this was kick-ass. Their new album is more poppy, and the crowd was singing along, pogoing and stage diving. They even did an encore. Great way to end the evening.

Picture from Thee Oh Sees @ ATP Minehead by

Conference:

Yesterday was a good day at Eurosonic. I kicked off the conference with a talk about ‘Green Festival Communication’. I know, that doesn’t sound quite sexy at all, but there were two people there from ID&T/Sensation and the Melt! Festival in Germany, and I was interested in hearing what they had to say about ‘being green’ and sustainability, because I never figured those kind of festivals as being very environmentally friendly, to be honest. It was a real inspiring talk, and a lot more exciting than I’d imagine though.
ID&T started of by telling what exactly they did in terms of these topics, and a lot of great examples passed by that I’m already jealous of. For example, all the volunteers of the festival were approached if they’d like to have a fun day with like-minded people and the organization to help out doing some work in the local environment. Everything from cleaning parks to helping out at a farm, painting sheds etcetera. It sounded (and looked) like the people were having a genuinely good time. Whether they really only did it for the fun of it or for the reward, I don’t know, but I like the idea of getting people connected with the local environment in this way and showing the locals that the organization is involved in what is happening around them.

Another great example can from the Melt! Festival. They actually won an award for being one for being the most environment-friendly festival, as I understood. Besides doing cool stuff like having a train run zig-zag through Germany, straight to the festival site and where people can rent a bed to sleep during the festival, they also noticed that a lot of the time, drivers of artists are waiting for a long time at the site, until they can go to the next spot. They thought it’d be a good idea to give the drivers some driving lessons in how to reduce the usage of fuel. This was all done in a very fun way, with drivers liking the idea of having something to do and not just hanging around to getting some tips, and speaking with people about their work.

Just like myself, a lot of people tend to instantly yawn when hearing subjects like ‘being green’ and ‘sustainability’, the speakers where also aware of that and gave some good tips about communicating to the audience about these things. First off: make sure everybody internally in your organization knows what these topics mean to your organization and festival. If there’s no internal support, there won’t be external support. Second: there’s a thin line between under- and over-communication: explain to little, and people won’t understand what you’re talking about. Talk too much, people get bored. But most importantly: make it fun for people. Explain why you want to do something, and make if fun and easy for others to get involved.

After that, I had to support Incubate’s Joost of course and went to take a look at the ‘Crossmediaal programmeren’ panel. I liked to hear about the ideas of 3voor12, and the way they create and distribute media in so many ways. Overall, I think the people in the panel where pretty much in agreement of the principles in modern-day communication and content creation. Here and there, Joost tried to spice it up a little with some statements from the background of Incubate. But the basis everyone agreed upon: doing stuff like blogging, sharing audio, video, photo, etcetera: it’s not just marketing, it’s definitely not just sales. It’s telling your own story via blogs and Twitter and all about the things you’re enthusiastic about to people who might be interested in the same stuff.

After that, I went to a “drink with Hein van der Ree” from Buma/Sterma, a panel, so we are told “without political correct answers”. Right. Most of the things I heard were very political correct answers, with everybody having a beer and Hein van der Ree sipping a glass of water. A shame really, I was hoping to hear some bolder statements instead ‘we’re really working hard on innovating and getting all of our members involved in this process’. Ah well, that’s how those things go I suppose.

Music

So, out on the streets and on to the music. I actually saw a couple of pretty good acts yesterday. I started off with Cashier No. 9 at Huize Maas: a nice indie-folkrock band with some really good tunes and a solid live show. Especially when the band rocked out a little harder, they sounded very driven and put on a good show. Was pretty surprised by the band actually. After that, in the same venue, Zulu Winter from England performed. I had heard the name before, because they gave out a single on Double Denim Records, a nice small record label. Zulu Winter is the act that is probably least experimental on the label (they’re now signed by PIAS by the way), but still I was quite excited. And they didn’t let down. Zulu Winter looked and sounded like they belonged on this stage, in front of a packed audience. Their sound is a bit pretentious, but they’ve really got some strong songs. Reminded me a bit of Wild Beasts actually; some falsetto singing, soulful melodies. Really curious to hear what the album is going to sound like.

After that: on with the shoegazepop of The History of Apple Pie. Which was quite ok. The live sound wasn’t al that good, but the dense layers of guitar feedback, well, can’t go wrong there of course. Plus it’s a funny sight really: two small girls next to two tall, sluggish boys on the stage. I tried to get in to the Bart Constant show after that, but the line outside was crazy, so I stuck to Het Paleis for a while and saw French Films play there: a typical, English indiepop band from, uhm, Finland. Anyways: They gave an energetic show and had the tunes to back for it as well. The formula was simple: steady-as-she-goes indierock with choruses shouted out by all the band members at the same time. Definitely put a smile on my face, as it did to a lot people around me.

I ended with two acts in Vera: synthpop band Niki & The Dove from Stockholm was the first and it reminded me of Austra. The sound was incredibly big, like it was built for a stadium, which actually suited the band pretty well. Niki & The Dove is synthpop at its most theatrical, complete with semi-spiritual dances/moves and faces painted with glitter. Not all their songs are equally memorable, but ‘DJ, Ease My Mind’ especially came out really well. I mean, it’s uncomplicated dance music, but at least it was done really well. After that, saw a little bit of M185 (which was ok), a bit of Clock Opera (actually a bit boring and overdone), but I really wanted to stick around for Stay+, one of the few bands I was actually really excited about seeing this weekend. I’ve been following these guys for quite some time now, and really like the mix of shrill dance music (almost like rave), lovely soundscapes and intense visual images. Tonight was no exception: I was glad to see the room was pretty full, and that the audience actually went all-out. In the midst of the stage, there was a big screen that displayed abstract visuals next to beautifully shot video clips, and besides it there were only two laptops with guys bent forward behind it. The band kicked off with an incredibly loud drone, to start pumping beats right off after that. The dynamics of the show were especially well: soundscapes were blended in to create suspension, after which cold beats kicked in again. The audience looked ecstatic, and for a shot time I felt like I was in a Hacienda-type club, amidst of the Madchester times. Perfect ending to my night (it wasn’t over yet of course, although I skipped good old Rinus) and for me, the highlight of the evening.

[Stream] LUIK – Owls

Culture

13 January

3voor12

incubated

incubated 13

Luik

luisterpaal

New album stream

owls

stream
<guid

If you listen to it, you will notice it can easily be divided in two different EPs. There is nothing crazy about that, because they recorded half of it with a different producer. You will notice that the first half of the CD is clear and gives a complete picture, almost like a live feeling. The second half is more of an adventurous and ‘looser’ sound. The songs, the band and the feeling is very southern rock with country/americana influences. A laidback album, with some fine tunes. You can listen to the record on here (in Dutch). Hereby we also officialy announce that Bill Drummond will be present at this years festival for debate on DIY culture as well as his new project The17.

Bill Drummond is best known as co-founder of late 1980s avant-garde pop group The KLF and its 1990s “avant-art” media-manipulating successor, the K Foundation. With The KLF, Drummond scored a number of hits and wrote “The Manual”, a book on how to write a Number 1 hit. The K Foundation is notorious for burning a million pounds in 1994. Drummond’s newest work is The17, an ad hoc choir singing one of Drummond’s pieces. It is a reaction to pre-recorded music and specialises in improvised music.

<object

This is the third part in a five part series. Ingmar Griffioen from 3VOOR12 has selected his 4 must-see acts for the festival!

Gearing up for Roadburn 2011 putting some recommendations in writing isn’t the hard part, narrowing it down to three surely is gruesome. First of all it would be more than foolish to ignore the offerings and cues of curators Sunn O))): http://3voor12.vpro.nl/artikelen/artikel/44622992 (in Dutch). Secondly: after seeing the Black Mountain show @ Incubate 2010 I must also recommend the afterburner with apart from the Canadian psychrockers the simmering Samsara Blues Experiment (soothing the frustration that Roadburn ends there) and two excellent Dutch stonerbands: The Machine and Sungrazer.

Swans
Like curators and doom masters Sunn O))) the group of Michael Gira tends to deliver a physically pounding experience on stage. Seeing the reunited Swans perform at last year’s Le Guess Who? festival I suddenly understood what the ‘noise’ was about. How about originating in the New York postpunk scene of the eighties, progressing through the end of the nineties and thus influencing tons of doom metal, noise, drones and sludge disciples, splitting up, reuniting more than twelve years later in 2010 and still kicking you in the gut, droning your intestines out and keep that up for a thoroughly griping ninety minutes. Well how about that? Certainly they weren’t fucking you about when they put this disclaimer on their site: SWANS ARE NOT DEAD.

A video of one of their live performances in 2010

here

Black Math Horseman
I really wanted to see Black Math Horseman last year, but I was robbed of both opportunities by one puffing Islandic volcano. This year they’re back and I definitely won’t be denied their full-on stoner grooving and postmetal riffing psychedelic experience. Producer Scott Reeder (Kyuss/The Obsessed) did some magic on the 2009 recording Wyllt, which is due for a follow-up. Did I mention they have amazing artwork including nice Griffins (!) and a really good looking female singer/bassplayer up their sleeves? More importantly: Sera Timms’ brutal classic vocals and screams give the LA foursome a dark and frightening twist. I’ll definitely start my Roadburn saturday deeply immersed in an hour of BMH.

Live at Emo’s Annex SXSW 3/19/2009 part 2

Italian stoner giants Ufomammut have rocked Roadburn before, which is a good sign ofcourse. Another good sign is that the people of Roadburn picked their Eve as ‘Roadburn Album of the Year’. Honouring that choice Ufomammut plays the album in its entirety in one and a half hour set at the Midi Theatre. The Italian trio specialize in heavy sluggish stoner and sludge metal (the ‘mammut’ or mammoth piece) with psychedelic tendencies and bizarre sounds (‘ufo’ stylee). They do have possibly the best artwork and videoshow to accompany them, since two of the member are the masterminds behind the Malleus Rock Art Lab (www.malleusdelic.com) Together that should guarantee a intense, very memorable spacetrip, after which there’s still time remaining to finish of the Roadburn saturday with some cruel sounds from Swans or Gates of Slumber.

Ufomammut – Stigma @ S-Osis, Turku 2010

<object
