/> There is a new art-initiative in town! Gradus is an initiative by Just Quist. It is a temporary space for contemporary art and gives (inter)national artists the possibility of a focused week-long preparation for a presentation/exhibition.

Gradus is a theme in the complexly constructed novel Pale Fire by Vladimir Nabokov. In the novel Gradus acts as an indicator of the interplay between the comment and the poem. It is yet another counterpoint which enriches the novel’s structure even more. Nabokov was a writer who left little to chance, everything he wrote had a function or meaning

Oliver Rafferty is a painter. In his blog his sensitive way of viewing the world is evident. He sees up, down, past and in layers, usually ignoring the obvious. In a detail he sees the possibility to connect one thing to the other, in an oversight he recognizes a bundling of idiosyncratic resemblances, or simplicity in composition. It is how the changing patterns of our direct environment of daily objects, images and events manifest themselves to us. Therein he shows remarkable interest in texture and materiality. His work does not seem to know any boundaries, and the appropriating of ‘medium-unknown’ materials and manipulation of shape and color seem to confirm this.

The exhibitions starts Friday 17th, 20:00 hrs at the St. Annahof 1 Tilburg.<br

Living and working (as an artist) in Tilburg, Netherlands. He work explores the relationship between intellect and intuition. Between these extremes there seems no clear line, they run more smoothly into each other. The behavior of animals and people seem opposite. The fact that animals act instinctively makes their behavior very pure, very sincere. Pompe misses this in humans.
The rapid social changes now provide even more extreme marks of those interactions. Besides figurative and abstract visual elements he also uses lyrics in his work. These texts can be disempowering and have a relativistic effect, but they can also work in relation to enhancing the image.
All these elements are expressed in different ways in his work; a drawing can stand alone, but he also uses collage-like techniques where meaning arises from the composition.

<img

As likely to use steel and salt as fabric and light, Violette shifts a viewer’s perspective by always implying more than what is on view. There is always a ghostly other that sits besides the installations and which frequently exists long-afterwards in the memories of spectators.

Claire Fontaine is a Paris-based collective artist, founded in 2004. After lifting her name from a popular brand of school notebooks, Claire Fontaine declared herself a “ready-made artist” and began to elaborate a version of neo-conceptual art that often looks like other people’s work. Working in neon, video, sculpture, painting and text, her practice can be described as an ongoing interrogation of the political impotence and the crisis of singularity that seem to define contemporary art today. But if the artist herself is the subjective equivalent of a urinal or a Brillo box – as displaced, deprived of its use value, and exchangeable as the products she makes – there is always the possibility of what she calls the “human strike.” Claire Fontaine uses her freshness and youth to make herself a whatever-singularity and an existential terrorist in search of subjective emancipation. She grows up among the ruins of the notion of authorship, experimenting with collective protocols of production, détournements, and the production of various devices for the sharing of intellectual and private property.

<img

Arts, visuals, conferences, expermental technologies… It’s pretty hard to explain what Sonic Arts is about. So we’ll just quote the festival itself:

“Since its inception in 1994, the bi-annual Sonic Acts festival has questioned, examined, assembled and exhibited contemporary and historicaldevelopments at the cutting edge of art, technology, music and science. The festival consists of numerous live performances, an internationalconference, an extensive film programme and an exhibition, complimented by a publication. Each edition has a specific topic. Over the years, Sonic Acts has become internationally renown as an exceptional festival for technology art with specific attention for aesthetics and research into interactivity, new forms for presentation and interfaces, interdisciplinary projects and exploring new alliances between different disciplines.

You can buy tickets <a

For this exhibition thirty artists are selected that give a representative overview of today’s contemporary art of painting in the Netherlands.

What’s up! originated from the need of a broad audience, they wanted to get an overall view of the art of painting. What is contemporary painting? What is going on and what came forward in the past years of contemporary painting? The duo that created the exhibition are Moniek Peters and Gerrit Willems. They wanted to show the work of artists that are at the beginning of their careers, but who already gets recognition for their work. On the other hand they want to show work from artists who are relatively unknown. By putting those two together they are creating a perfect balance for this exhibition. What’s up! is at That’s it. When we dug a bit deeper into the internet, we found out more.

Brad Kunkle was heavily drawn to the world of Maxfield Parrish and the Pre-Raphealites in his younger years: “A subtle, supernatural beauty seems to be hiding under the breath of women –worlds where something beyond our natural perception is waiting to be found.” His minimal palette is inspired by the grisailles of early masters and the haunting quality of antique photographs and daguerreotypes. Brad’s work appeared in International Artists, American Art Collector Magazine, Fine Art Connoisseur. American Arts Quarterly and Kunst. His first solo exhibition sold out opening night in April 2010 at Arcadia Fine Arts in New York City.

<img

Almost all of them have a weird perception of depth or logic. On first look, they seem to be designed for children’s books. But when you look closer, you’ll find that there’s something sinister. In the drawing itself, or in the atmosphere the drawing creates.

Did we tell you we really love STRP Festival in Eindhoven? Well, we do. And we’re not just talking about the music here.
The 5th edition of STRP Festival is also about 50 years of Dutch media- and technology art. Together with the pioneers, heroes of today and tomorrow’s talent, the STRP EXPO brings you an overview of the past, present and future.

So that means you can experience the first experiments with electronic music by Dick Raaijmakers in the Fifties, next to the most recent see-through technological installations by Daan Roosegaarde. The first video installations and interactive artpieces like Jeffrey Shaw‘s Legible City, and Erik Hobijn‘s controversial Suicide Machine next to the augmented reality rabbit Tibb.

And not only the EXPO is definitely worth a visit. We’re big fans of Matthew Herbert as well. Matthew recenty helped with Ridley Scott’s ‘Life In A Day’ soundtrack and Björk’s ‘Biophilia’. And he recomposed Mahler’s 10th for Deutsche Gramophon. On STRP he will perform his ‘One Pig‘ project live.

‘One Pig‘ is the story of one farm animal in particular, that was being followed from his birth untill his death and after that. Matthew Herbert recorded it all. He documented the life of the pig from birth to adulthood to, eventually, the slaughter. Due to English laws, he couldn’t record the slaughter itself, but he could document the process before it, the cooking and the consuming. And if that’s not enough, he made instruments from the remaining bodyparts: a drum of the stomach, an instrument based on the blood etcetera.

The result is an ode to the lifecycle of an otherwise anonymous animal. A work that brings up questions and insight in the presence of an animal in a society that underestimates its use and meaning.

Thanks to the great people at STRP, we’re able to give away 2×2 tickets for Matthew Herbert‘s performance, with a visit to the EXPO included on Friday November 18. If you want those tickets mail us the coolest picture of a pig you can find to win@incubate.org. Oh, and don’t forget to put ‘STRP’ in the subjectline!

Good luck!

<object

Petterson based his work on exploring various themes of lighting to create elements of mystery. Speaking of mystery, this is a huge subject in his works. He wants to highlight the important elements and let the mind fill in the rest.

Petterson looks at his artwork just as painters look at a painting, he is fascinated by fabric and movement. He believes that the integration of movement and fabric are similar to brushstrokes. Looking at these pictures of his artwork, you can see that the focus is set on painting, photo-based works, steel sculpture and photography.

fucked up in modern day society.
The aversion to modern-day politics is one of the reasons we wanted Rob Riemen on our festival. Incubate visitors were so eager to see what Riemen had to say, that the Audaxzaal was totally packed. Some could only find a place on the ground.
We think it’s great that there seems to be a renewed awareness of politics.

To feed that awareness, we need art. Artist Guy Denning is a self-taught English artist currently living in France. He posts a new drawing every day on his Facebook. Amongst these works, there are some amazing paintings he made regarding the 99% protesters. These works are really awe-inspiring.<br

The funny part is showing throughout his photographs by using non other then LEGO. Everybody knows LEGO and probably played allot with it when they were younger. We all made buildings, cars and stories with the bricks, plates and plastic dolls. McVeigh is grabbing this idea to another level and made funny pics by making LEGO illustrations/set-ups. A LEGO MC Hammer, a pie and allot of Star Wars references he made it all! Here are a few of these funny LEGO illustrations. More photos can be seen at <a
