Franko B will perform Wednesday 16 September in De NWE Vorst

Franko B has recently decided to discontinue bleeding in performance, which he used to do before. In ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’, his latest performance work in progress, Franko B’s body is presented naked and unpainted, leaving his many tattoos uncovered, seated on a raised plinth or altar. The audience is allowed time to look at his body, to approach it as a sculptural form. ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’ continues his practical research into the politics of performance, in new and unexpected ways.

Franko B comes to Tilburg as one of the artsts that were influenced by Hermann Nitsch’s work.

Brethren of the Free Spirit will play Sunday 20 September in the Pauluskerk.

Old things can be cool. Seriously! That is, when some cool dude does cool stuff with it, of course. Like Jozef van Wissem (as seen at ZXZW 2007). He plays the lute in Brethren Of The Free Spirit. Together with guitarist James Blackshaw, he puts forth experimental folk with an ethereal, almost religious feel. And yes. That IS cool.

James Blackshaw will play Sunday 20 September in the Pauluskerk.

James Blackshaw is a London-based guitarist and pianist, born in 1981. Blackshaw primarily plays an acoustic 12 string guitar and has been compared to Bert Jansch, Robbie Basho, John Fahey, Jack Rose, and Leo Kottke.

Jozef van Wissem will play Sunday 20 September in the Pauluskerk.

Jozef van Wissem (born Maastricht, 1962) is a Dutch minimalist composer and lute player. Much of the work of Jozef van Wissem is based on the application of mirror images to lute composition. The work is idiomatic to lute tablature of around AD 1600. One critic has compared his work to that of German painter Georg Baselitz, who paints upside down.

Kayo Dot will play Saturday 19 September.

Kayo Dot is an experimental rock/modern composition ensemble currently based in New York City. They fuse folk and jazz in an avantgarde sort of way on their last album coming from a experimental metal background (as ‘maudlin of the Well’). They keep on inventing their music in new ways, without keeping a close eye on what everyone expects them to do. This attitude is admired by many, and rejected by others, according to the mixed reviews on their last album. This constant search for new things is exactly why Kayo Dot is on its place at Incubate 2009.

New Album is coming

Kayo Dot has arrived in Seattle to begin recording its second full-length release for Hydra Head Industries (Pelican). According to a press release, “The new music features another sonic shift in the ever-evolving sonic lexicon of Kayo Dot. Expect a more visceral rhythmic sound with overdriven chorus basses, cave-echoed horns, vocals and strings, tuned struck metal, and a purveying melodic darkness threaded delicately throughout the sound of the music. Once again, the album will be recorded by Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Earth) who also recorded Kayo Dot’s critically acclaimed Hydra Head release from 2008, ‘Blue Lambency Downward’.” (source).

Sometimes you like a band but hate one of the members. You like Blood Red Shoes but think the beautiful female guitarist sucks? You think White Stripes are great, but don’t like the female drummer or Jack White with his white skin? Well… The Sea has all good aspects of both bands packed together and dropped the boring and annoying stuff. Their debut album ‘Get it Back’ was mixed by the legendary John Cornfield. It’s getting boring by The Sea? I don’t think so!

Garage grrrlpower like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, only more retarded. In a good way, like Modest Mouse retarded. Pintandwefall brings punky party music made by four girls from Helsinki. Happy music, light lyrics, and a beat that reminds of The White Stripes will definitely get a party started during Incubate 2009. Zombies, and octopuses are occupying their lyrics as well as issues closer to home, like what to wear. These girls follow their own path and that path does not follow the rules. Bad girls.

Wadruna will play Saturday 19 September at the Bockenreyder Inn exclusively.

Wardruna, a special folk project of Einar ‘Kvitrafn’ Selvik (Jotunspor and ex-Gorgoroth), creates ritualistic folk music with traditional instruments such as antlers and wooden logs, inspired by old runes. Fire, water, stones, and branches are also used.

The natural atmosphere that flows out of the speakers is thick, peaceful and transforms any room in no time into an old pagan ritual site complete with trees, fires and druids. With the mighty Gaahl of God Seed (also ex-Gorgoroth) on vocals.

Wardruna’s show will be set apart from the busy and rushing city. The setting in which they will perform is found around a rural inn called ‘In den Bockenreyder’.

‘In den Bockenreyder’ lends its name from a malicious horde called De Bokkenrijders (The Buckriders: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckriders ). They roamed the lands in the 18th century that are now the borders of the nation states Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. Their raids were aimed at farmers and monasteries in the region. The story goes they made a pact with the devil and rode at night on bucks.
There is an eyewitness that claimed that the oaths were taken while denouncing of God and vowing obedience to the devil (symbolized by a cut-off hand holding a candle) with the middle finger and the index finger pointed upwards, as well as the thumb.

One of the places these Bokkenrijders repeatedly showed up was at Landgoed de Utrecht (Utrecht Estate), a little south of a little village called Esbeek. On these 2700 acres of land the inn ‘In den Bockenreyder’ is situated. The fascination of the Bokkenrijders horde for the occult, mysticism and magic is the reason Incubate will present Wardruna on that historic site. One of the aims of this concert is to get people in contact with the historic landscape through the sounds and performance of Wardruna.

The programme:
- The public will be taken to the special Wardruna performance by coaches from Tilburg.
- At the inn they can eat and drink in style.
- When the sun begins to set the visitors are led to an grandstand outside.
While darkness falls, torches light the site. Wardruna performs, the sun will set and the atmosphere will be filled with the visuals and sounds that Wardruna stands for.
-After the concert the visitors will be brought back to the city on the same way that they left it, by bus.

This very special performance of Wardruna will be open for everyone with a Incubate 2009 dayticket for Saturday and of course all Incubate 2009 passepartouts. The bus ride will cost a very small additional amount of money.

Cooly G will play Saturday 19 September at the Generation Bass program.

Singer and producer Cooly G – hailing from South London, a place where so much UK bass music has been pioneered before – drops her debut 12” for the forward pushing, genre spanners Hyperdub who always seem to uncover exciting musical hybrids. The intricate soca drum patterns flow, shake, bump and groove in every possible direction and make you want to wind your body in new and emphatically sexy ways.

Cooly G sings snippets in her sweet and slinky way as silky chords get all warm and fuzzy above the bass punches below; its all so spaced out and mellow yet insanely danceable at the same time. This is the undoubtedly the smooth loved up end of UK funky; pure vibes.

Hailing from the south coast and now based in Birmingham, Raffertie is the 21 year old DJ and producer whose innovative and down right filthy style has been smashing up the UK’s underground dance music scene for the last couple of years.
His sets include everything from uplifting pop classics and 90’s rave anthems to the filthiest house, garage, grime and dubstep tracks, creating huge dance floor reactions that earned him a residency at Hold Tight in London.

Meeting contemporary composed music in a place that is nothing like the average high-brow concert hall. That is what Kraaklink is about. Having a beer in a relaxing atmosphere while listening to interesting music made by musicians under 35y whose innovative music is constructed by young composers (below 40 years of age). This makes it one of the most interesting programs of ZXZW, aiming to bring contemporary composed music to those who would want to see it: a relaxed and interested audience.

Experimental black metal influenced by people such as Hermann Nitsch and Albin Julius (Der Blutharsch). With the goal to create a timeless, organic mix of krautrock’s strangeness and black metal’s coldness, Aluk Todolo conjures rabid obsessive rhythms and abyssal disharmonic guitars. Subliminal spiritualist vibrations and bizarre, magick summonings. Very dark. Very scary. Very nice.

We saw them last weekend at the amazing Worm venue in Rotterdam. We got a lot of blackdronenoise and were very happy they handed out earplugs.

Darkness. Thick layers of filthy blackness. Escape is not an option. Covered by the slime that is actually dripping from the sound. It’s filling the room that seems to get smaller and smaller. The speakers cry by the sheer volume. Hypnotizing rhythms providing the groundwork for the dissonant screeching guitars and the vocals that come from deep within. Those places would be better left covered. Nothing left to do but to stand, watch and be carried away by the waves of these Manatees.

An Emerald City will play Sunday 20 September.

Emerald is a green and not very hard stone. Not the preferred material when you want to build a city, you would think. Nevertheless are there at least ten cities on the globe that have Emerald City as a nickname. Maybe it has something to do with other qualities this gem possesses: it is beautiful and mysterious.

Those qualities can also be found in the music of the band An Emerald City hailing from New Zealand. Melting oriental melodies with trance-like post rock structures, An Emerald City creates a flying carpet of sound that takes you right into a mythical Arab city and lets you fly around minarets and over the head of snake-charmers in the streets. Fly into that dreamy wonderland you always thought only theme-parks could create.

ON will play Friday 18th of September.

ON is a hardcore band from Seattle, featuring members of Champion, Go It Alone and other well-known hardcore punk outfits. With their positive attitude these guys have something to say about Western society these days but without blaming everyone except themselves.

As they say in their song ‘Falling Apart’: “We have been living outside our means. Our ability to reason traded for greed. I know I’m at fault for playing the game. We’ve got to wake up and change.” These are very relevant, really self-conscious lyrics. And best of all: The lyrics are backed by very energetic hardcore, just the way it should be. These guys have something to say, and they bring their message across with appropriate anger, without losing melody out of sight.

Knalpot will play Sunday 20 September.

Knalpot are Raphael Vanoli (guitar/casio/electronics) and Gerri Jäger (drums). At a push it’d be possible to sqeeze Knalpot into the punkfunkelectro bag, but the seams wouldn’t hold the duo for long. Sounding a lot more organic than other similarly tooled outfits, their music is stuffed with loops, blips and Mulder melodies.

Knalpot means ‘exhaust’ in old Dutch, but its connotations are: noise, pandemonium etc. And that is exactly what Knalpot brings live on stage, but in controlled bursts. Using a keyboard, drums and more guitar effects than even you have, these two guys bring experimental electro/jazz like they have never done anything else before. They claim their sound engineer will be there to make sure no-one gets hurt. Our advice to you is to come and see this fresh duo, but do not forget your earplugs!

A1 Bassline is from London, UK. The man is smashing London’s bassline scene with his electro-infused brand of speed garage. He describes his style as a blend between house and garage but with some small influences of drum and bass.

He has received positive press from such mags as DJ Magazine, Mix Mag and NME and his tracks have been supported by DJs the world over, including Le Castle Vania, Steve Aoki and Guns and Bombs.

On his weblog he gives away free downloads regularly and updates his fans on his tours so it is highly recomended that you keep an eye on his blog.

Bain Wolfkind creates music that makes you want to drink. Drink a lot, but nice and slow. Because you’ve got all night.

Bain Wolfkind is the nom de guerre for Australia’s Lounge Lothario; an Elvis man, ladies’ man, a jazzman, and a man’s man, Bain Wolfkind creates tunes for the back rooms, the darkened corners, the crime-ridden streets of an imagined future city where the men mete out their own brands of personal justice and the ladies are willing to give up their own goods for nothing more than a deathly-dry Martini and a little sweet-talk.

When Bain is not assisting Albin Julius and fellow Der Blutharsch co-conspirators he is working for his self titled solo project and Novo Homo, his electronic project. Albin Julius, who has known Bain Wolfkind for almost ten years describes Bain on stage “as like a more groovy and dark version of one of the rat pack…”

When asked about his favorite Bain Wolfkind song, Albin says:

“You mean in Blutharsch? I think every song he did is great, maybe “Iron Rain” (“So Bring Your Iron Rain Upon Me” From Der Blutharsch’s ‘When did Wonderland End’ ed.) for some reasons, if you talk about his bands I like most “Corruption is the currency” (From Bain Wolfkind’s ‘The Swamp Angel’ ed.) but I love Princessin (From Novo Homo’s ‘Private Hell’ ed.)a lot as well, in the end I can`t really find any song I dislike! It is a pleasure and honour to work with Bain.”

Altar of Plague from Cork, Ireland, shift between unrelenting, two chord black metal buzzsaw riffs, colossal melodies, lengthy atmospheric parts that build up tension and murky electronic soundscapes. Imagine a combination of Secrets of the Moon, Neurosis, Primordial and a little like The Axis of Perdition.

2008 saw them sign to Profound Lore Records as well as supporting black metal legends Mayhem on their European tour. Terrorizer magazine about their debut: “one of the most promising debuts since Wolves in the Throne Room’s ‘Diadem of 12 stars’”. You could definitely compare the music of Altar of Plagues with those American farmers of WitTR that conquered the European stages the last couple of years.

Well, at least that’s what the name of this UK band suggests, and indeed, The Notorious Hi-Fi Killers embrace the lo-fi aesthetic with not just enthusiasm, but with downright aggression. With their amps turned up to 11 and the distortion pedals on maximum overdrive, the band jumps and crunches through a number of punk influenced originals.

Expect titles such as Lost in the Modern World, Queen O’ Fuck and Stars Explode, as well as a pretty decent cover of Freddie King’s Going Down. This is not metal, mind you, but it is explosive, raw, energetic music, stripped of any fancy modern production, just basic, down n’ dirty rock n’ roll.

One of those is: Kim Janssen. Playing September 20th, stay tuned for the venue.

Kim Janssen is a Dutch singer-songwriter that uses his fragile voice and an acoustic guitar to create songs that appear to break into thousand pieces like a wine glass as soon as he opens his mouth. It sounds like a poppy folksinger, that reminds one vaguely of a Sufjan Stevens gone solo with the gripping emotion of Sigur Rós. You would want to see this because this just might be the next big thing coming from the Netherlands. He sometimes performs with his personal band ‘The Major Cities band’ which can make his songs a little less brittle.

April 18th 2009, Kim Janssen presented his debut album ‘The truth is, I am always responsible’ in Groningen.

The Caretaker (James Kirby, V/VM) is all about lost memories, amnesia and nostalgia to old times. Creating a deep beautiful, but sometimes sinister atmosphere he tries to take you back in your personal history through electronic ambient music.

Pleasant memories, bad dreams, being alone in the dark, all these emotions overtake the listener. If you’ve seen the Kubrick movie ‘The Shining’, you will get an idea of the beautiful but disturbing feelings The Caretaker tries to evoke.

The Caretaker is building an ever expanding following for his audio memories. Fans of the darker isolationist ambient work of modern composers such as William Basinski, Nurse With Wound, Aphex Twin, Fennesz and Brian Eno would find elements to admire and enjoy and also parallels to The Caretaker’s output.

It can be a harsh world at times but ultimately exposure is always rewarding. Immerse yourself in the darkness and give into the spirits and tales recalled and retold in his unique way.

The first of a new series of Artist Exposed for the ZXZW 2009 fest, highlighting the artists you definitely do not want to miss!

First up: DJ Beware. Playing September 19th, Generation Bass program, stay tuned for the venue.

Beware is a versatile dude who feels Rio Baile Funk Beats, London Grime, the Angolean Kuduro Drums, juicy Baltimore Breaks, sparkling Bling Hop… good music with bass and beats from all over world .

More importantly he feels what the people want. Beware played a blockparty under a highway bridge in the north zone of Rio de Janeiro where nobody had heard of him and managed to make thousand people dance to his sound.

Some of the first few unofficial remixes that he did of Dizzee Rascal, MIA, Saigon and Arctic Monkeys have been played by the likes of Crookers, Kissy Sell Out, DJ MK, and Stereo MCs.

In 2008, Beware was picked up by the piping hot label Man Recordings to release two of the best selling records on the label – “Tamborzao Con Scratchy” and “Rio Baile Funk Breaks”.

Appie Kim is the solo project of Natasha van Waardenburg, former guitarist and song writer of De Nieuwe Vrolijkheid. Since its unexpected end in February 2007, she performs new material together with Marcel Duin (drums and keys) in venues in The Netherlands and abroad. They have played in London (Febuary and September), Liverpool, Lancashire, Antwerpen, Paradiso (Amsterdam), Vera (Groningen) and Rotown (Rotterdam). Appie Kim have received praising reviews so far.
