Countdown to Europe Mania 2010: Coco Bryce and Globalibre (part 6 of 6: ready for lift-off!!!)

Today is the day! Today Incubate will curate a stage at the Europe Mania Festival. The festival takes place in Pécs, Hungary from the 6th until the 8th of may. Today, may 8^th, Incubate will host the Brewery stage.

Most of the Incubate staff is in Pécs, Hungary right now to host the Brewery stage. This week we have highlighted most of the artists that we’ve brought to Hungary to perform. Two more left though: Coco Bryce and Globalibre.

Coco Bryce is one of the best upcoming producers in the Netherlands operating in the field of dubstep and skwee. Skwee?! Yes, skweee. Although still a niche, skweee is a rapidly growing musical movement combining synth and bass driven dance music with elements of funk, hip hop and soul. Starting out as a DJ playing mainly hardcore and breakbeat rave, Coco Bryce has developed himself in recent years into one of the Netherlands’ leading skweee producers. With his tracks being released by Harmönia and Myor and a mixtape recently released through the Lowriders Collective, it’s now time to introduce Coco Bryce to a bigger audience at the Europe Mania festival.

Also performing this Saturday will be DJ O.live.R and DJ axe.l of the Globalibre DJ Team. Being active for more than ten years as DJ’s in different DJ teams and soundsystems, these guys will bring you some of the funkiest ghetto tech, baile funk, tropical house and dub mixed up with traditional music from around the world. Check out some of their stuff for free right here. As we say in Dutch: voetjes van de vloer! (= dance mf!).

This Saturday Incubate will curate a stage at the Europe Mania Festival. The festival takes place in Pécs, Hungary from the 6th until the 8th of may. On may 8th Incubate will host the Brewery stage.

Multi-instrumentalist and Incubate’s very own artistic leader Vincent Koreman a.k.a. Vince the Prince will spin the decks under the moniker of Sonido del Principe this Saturday on Europe Mania. In doing so, he will be accompanied by DJ Umb. Vincent has been active for years in loads of different music and art projects and has gained fame as Ra-X, The House of Destructo and This is Total War among others. Also, Vincent and DJ Umb are the driving force behind the Generation Bass blog, thé blog on non-western dance music.

A couple of years ago Vincent discovered the world of cumbia, a South American musical genre for the working class, with beautiful songs on everyday life in the favelas of Buenos Aires and Colombia. From this point on he started experimenting with the genre, mixing it with old school house and bass oriented music. Within three days he had created his own nu cumbia tracks and it only took another five days for the first labels to approach him to release them. Check out some of his stuff for free right here.

On Europe Mania Sonido del Principe and DJ Umb will bring you a tropical mix of funk, bassline, house, experimental dub, dancehall and afro beat mixed up with non-western dance music. Nu Cumbiaaa!

Lowlands, one of the most prominent festivals in The Netherlands, has a Global cLIMAx program. This means the Lima tent will be the place to be for peeps that wanna hear something different when it comes to dance music. Fridaynight is definitely the one you DO NOT MISS. Why?

Generation Bass update!

Here’s an update about the weblog activities surrounding the non-western dance program at ZXZW!

The most visible infiltration of the Dutch media by Vince the Prince (the man behind the blog) was last month . He sent an cd filled with good music to the Queen of England, and was rewarded with a nice letter by one of Her Majesties personal assistents. Read all about it here:

This morning, when you were reading the best and biggest newspaper of The Netherlands, De Telegraaf, you could have seen Vince on page 3. There was a photo and a bit of text on the letter he got from the British Queen (we told you yesterday about it, do you remember?).

Piracy is the new creativity. Influential DJ, producer, and label head Jace Clayton digs deep into the world of digital cumbia bootlegs to find gold. Since his mixtape heard ’round the world, Gold Teeth Thief, dropped in 2001, Clayton (a.k.a. DJ /rupture) has become well-known for telling us what we should be listening to. For the past couple years, he’s been knee-deep in cumbia and Latin beats. At this short XLR8R film he teaches us about cumbia and takes us to bootleg CD shops in San Francisco’s Mission District to sort the wheat from the chaff—hardly an easy feat in the world of digital piracy.
