The DMC initiative (DMCI) developed this awesome movie, it involves dance, design and graphics. The concept behind this is video is timelessness. ‘People, the expression of self and the interactions between each other are timeless qualities relevant to creativty, no matter what the future holds.‘ They asked dancers, with individual performance styles, to develop choreographed dance routines based on the concept of growth, sharing, sending and receiving.

All the different elements in this movie are working together perfectly. The score underneath the video hits the same time as someone does another dance move. When a dancer is hitting or spinning around the graphics flow with them. It’s a briljant movie, where all the parts are beautifully connected!

1. Can you please introduce yourself?

I am Halla Ólafsdóttir coming soon to Tilburg with the dance piece “It´s definitely the spiritual thing” featuring Susanna Leibovici.

2. Where are you at the moment?

In Reykjavík, Iceland, working on our new piece “What a feeling” premiering at Reykjavík Dance Festival.

3. Have you played in the Netherlands before and if so, what’s your view on or experience with the scene you’re operating in The Netherlands?

This is our debut in Holland and we are very excited to be apart of creating history with you awesome motherfuckers of Tilburg.

4. What can we expect of your performance at the Incubate Festival?
A trip down memory lane and the experience of communal ecstasy that has the potential of leading to pure joy.

5. What are your plans for the (near) future?
No idea. I am looking for something to do. Remember, with me it’s not like there’s a larger design to the way things get made. I am still working on “What a feeling” , “Beauty and the Beast” premiering at MDT in Stockholm and the Remake of Giselle , so I haven’t had time for much else. But I just started writing a couple of things, and of course continuing working on various projects that I have with my usual partners in crime. Geniuses as; Nadja Hjorton, Amanda Apetrea, Jessica Watson-Galbraith, Lovísa Gunnarsdóttir, Emma Kim Hagdahl and INPEX. I don’t want to talk about the projects yet, but all are departures from what we have been working on before.

Een groep freelance danskunstenaars heeft zich onlangs verenigd in het open source Network for Choreography & Related Art. Aanleiding voor de totstandkoming van dit netwerk is dat deze groep zich onvoldoende vertegenwoordigd voelt in het huidige politieke debat. De deelnemers aan het netwerk willen gezamenlijk komen tot een voorstel voor hoe de freelance dans- en performancekunstenaars hun werkomstandigheden kunnen vormgeven op een nieuwe en toekomstgerichte manier.

Op 1 juni vindt een ontmoeting plaats waarvoor we iedereen willen uitnodigen die zich betrokken voelt, die mee wil praten en die actief deel wil uitmaken van dit netwerk. Thema van de ontmoeting is Reframing Dance.

Doel van deze middag is dat wij een open brainstormsessie houden over wat wij denken dat de nieuwe kaders van de hedendaagse dans zijn. Jack Gallagher, freelance choreograaf en nu ‘artist en passant’ bij ICKamsterdam – Emio Greco, verzorgt een inleiding, waarna we met elkaar in gesprek willen gaan over hoe de toekomst van de hedendaagse dans eruit komt te zien en wat dit betekent voor de freelance danskunstenaar.

Uitgangspunt voor de middag zijn een aantal vragen: “Hoe zie je de toekomst van je eigen werk?”, “Wat voor kaders gebruik je?”, “Hoe verhouden deze kaders zich tot de veranderende politieke en maatschappelijke context?” en “Wat verwacht je voor steun of mogelijkheden van het netwerk?”

For the ninth year in a row, the international dance and performance festival Something Raw will take place from February 15 to February 19 2011 in Amsterdam. The 5-day festival will feature ten different performances and can be combined over the course of the evening. Click on “read more” to see a few examples of what to expect at the festival!

Irina Müller’s “On pleasure and fear” will guide the audience through a trance in which physical, fearful responses will be unavoidable, only to switch the audience back into pleasureful moments again. “Palpitations, rapid breathing and full-body shakes” as they describe this themselves, will make this an intense experience.

Gaëtan Bulourde, who made his name with the controversial combining of a urinal and a bicycle wheel, will show the audience how everyday objects can be turned into art in his expo “Already Made”

Jolika Sudermann (Germany) and Alma Söderberg (Sweden) will enlighten us with the fascination about aspects of non-dictionary-language; the melodies, rhythms and moves used by people every day.

Addison Groove, who according to FACT mag is responsible for one of the best dancefloor tracks of this year (‘Footcrab’), has made a free mix for FACT’s website. Addison Groove is an alias of Incubate 2010 artist Headhunter. Download the mix here.

Theater producer and choreographer Gerard Mosterd is working on an new interdisciplinary project in wich he works with the contrast between Asiatic ritual cyclical musical forms and the individualistic improvisation techniques of jazz. On May 20th and 27th during the Tong Tong Festival in The Hague he will give two presentations of his work in progress.

The production (working title: Gamelan & Jazz) features live music by Boi Akih and live video by Morgana Machado Marques. Dancers are Ricardo Ambrozio who dances for Ultima Vez/Wim vandeKeybus, Blazej Jazinski, dancer for theater producer Andre Gingras and Joana Schwing who has among others worked with Dutch post-metal band Izah.

The end result is expected to go on an international tour in 2011. The pre-premiere will be at the Tong Tong festival at the Malieveld in The Hague on May 2oth at 20:15 and May 27th at 14:45.

This Saturday Incubate will curate a stage at the Europe Mania Festival. The festival takes place in Pécs, Hungary from the 6th until the 8th of may. On may 8th Incubate will host the Brewery stage.

Not only will we bring a lot of good music to Hungary, we also bring some other art forms to the Europe Mania Festival. Dutch dance company Fragmenta will perform their project Mensen die Niets Zien, which translates to people who can’t see. It’s a performance that goes in search of the borderline between watching and seeing.

Just like in 2008 and 2009, Fragmenta’s leading lady Sonja Augart will also curate the contemporary dance and performance program on this year’s Incubate.

By now the artist stream flooding into Tilburg is getting enormous! What do you need to see? Everything! That’s right: it’s all worth it.

Just surprise yourself, don’t see only the things you already know.

Jandek, Misery Signals, Kayo Dot, Mad Professor, Tryee Cooper, Altaar, Jessica Bailiff, Shackleton, AU, Schlachthofbronx, Kraaklink, New Jacks, are of course a couple of the more familiar names today.

Two words will be uttered a lot today: Wardruna and Aktion.

Wardruna is a special folk project Einar ‘Kvitrafn’ Selvik (Jotunspor and ex-Gorgoroth). Wardruna creates ritualistic folk music with traditional instruments such as antlers and wooden logs, inspired by old runes. Fire, water, stones, and branches are use as well. The musical atmosphere that reminds one of an old pagan ritual site complete with trees, fires and druids, will become reality during Incubate as they will perform in an Amphitheater. With the mighty Gaahl of God Seed (also ex-Gorgoroth) on vocals.

Hermann Nitsch is one of the most important artists of the last century. He is a multidisciplinary artist avant la lettre that has heavily influenced contemporary dance, visual arts and music. Nitsch is the central guest at Incubate. His work is highly controversial, but also often misunderstood. Therefore Incubate has a whole week filled with interesting things you can see, hear and experience about this artist and those inspired by him.

The artist himself will be interviewed by Nitsch expert Henk Oosterling on Sunday 13 September from 20:00 – 22:00@ De NWE Vorst. On Tuesday 15 September from 14:00h he will give a public accesible Masterclass at the Fontys Hogeschool. Nitsch himself will perform an organconcert on Thursday 17 Septemberfrom 20:00 – 22:00 @ the Pauluskerk. And on the Incubate Saturday 19 September 16:00 – 19:00 at the Kapel Clarissenklooster the Nitsch week will reach its high-point with the performance of an Aktion.

Hermann Nitsch will, together with a set of actors, play out a carefully prepared and scripted performance. The performance draws inspiration from the ancient sacrifice ritual, where Christian and liturgical elements are interwoven with heathen and pagan practices. Nitsch’s Aktionen are a combination of theater, music, musical-theater and visual arts, wherein paint, grapes and even a freshly slain animal are used. The garments of the actors and the cloths from the floors will be the eventual artwork and can still be seen after the Aktion  is over. The Chapel in which the Aktion is held is very small, so keep that in mind when you want to see this happening.

Franko B will perform Wednesday 16 September in De NWE Vorst

Franko B has recently decided to discontinue bleeding in performance, which he used to do before. In ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’, his latest performance work in progress, Franko B’s body is presented naked and unpainted, leaving his many tattoos uncovered, seated on a raised plinth or altar. The audience is allowed time to look at his body, to approach it as a sculptural form. ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’ continues his practical research into the politics of performance, in new and unexpected ways.

Franko B comes to Tilburg as one of the artsts that were influenced by Hermann Nitsch‘s work.
