Mixmag got Incubate 2011 Daedelus to create an exclusive a track exclusively for. They also asked him a couple of questions which you can find below the stream.

Previous edition of Incubate Daedelus worked with students from the Fontys Rock Academy and the Conservatory in Tilburg to create 4 new tracks. You can find those on our Soundcloud.

What did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was quite young I wanted to be an inventor, not that I had any aptitude for the maths involved. I was a terror to my parent’s electronics – everything got taken apart, but very little put back together.

What’s the worst club you’ve been to?
The worst club isn’t made of walls and disco balls, it’s populated by douches and their bags, prick industry types, and the unenjoyable. I never play those places.

What are you obsessed with right now?
The sound of a crackling snare and down low bass always hold fascination, and the music of Beats, Trap, and Juke are doing it right. Beyond these fun modern genres I’ve gotten deeper into Doo-Wop as of late.

And what do you hate right now?
I’m living, the winter is receding, the ‘now’ is good, there is little time to hate except in those little moments of traffic (I am from Los Angeles after all).

When and where were you your happiest?
The day I got my first record pressed and my Wedding day; both are the culmination of long courting processes, years of practicing, and continuing adventures.

How do you describe what you do to someone who doesn’t know you?
Mostly it is a process of subtraction. Do you listen to music? Are those sounds electronic sometimes? Is it all thump thump thump or does some have melody? I’m somewhere in that range.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever had?
Never succumb to bitterness, never give in to apathy.

What do you collect – apart form records?
Records are the bulk of it, but I do have a soft spot for clothes. Principally tail coats, waist jackets, cravats, and ties. Just the necessities really.

What’s your vice?
If I may quote from the bible of Midnight Marauders, “It has to do with lots of loving and it ain’t nothing nice.”

Who was your first love and what happened?
It was long ago and perhaps in your readership so I’ll spare her the outing, but it wasn’t the right timing simple enough, young love rarely is.

What were you doing at 2pm last Sunday afternoon?
Recovery. The night before was a fantastic / bizarre show with Korn, Cyprus Hill, and Rusko, among many others. I am treating myself for second hand smoke inhalation.

What was your last treat for yourself?
A bespoke shirt from Taylor Stitch. Things that fit are worth a little spending.

What do you spend your money on? 
Mostly in the getting to places, eating of things, imbibing, trying to live life like 2012 will actually be the end.

What’s your drug of choice?
Caffeine in espresso form.

What’s the worst item of clothing you’ve ever worn?
There has been many mistakes, probably many more to make, whatever fashion is now, it will be laughable in the future.

If you had a Tardis, what time would you go to? 
To any time free from the oppression of Daleks. Those slow-moving awkward robots will be the end of us yet.

What’s your lamest claim to fame?
I was once John Lennon in an Eryka Badu video. Actually I find it pretty awesome to have been, but I’m sure I was a lame Lennon. (‘Honey’ was the song for those who are curious)

A designvideo for the Design Biennale 2011 in Lissabon, which consists of a storytelling via well known LP covers. Storytelling via LP covers? Yes! Every LP cover you will see is a version of the famous albumcovers of famous artist. You will recognize the baby from ‘Nirvana’, Typography from ‘The Sex Pistols’ and ‘Kiss’ and many more. The song is from a band named ‘The Parenthetical Girl’ and the song is called Doughnut, you will see way! The lyrics of this song will shown on the various LP covers. So what is de ideology of this video? In a new era full of downloading and buying cds/songs online, some people find the cover artwork useless and others will find them meaningful and useful. The creators of this video will prove otherwise, it’s the banana, the kid, the typography that will trigger something in your brain and allows you to recognize it! It’s a trip down memory lane, so which covers do you recognize?

‘‘Useless’ – the motto of biennial’s current edition – was the kick-off, and the thought on how album covers (vinyls, in this case) enable people to ‘listen with the eyes’ the main goal of the project. At a time where digital audio files dominate but where traditional mediums still seduce fans, the album covers, being useless for some, stay relevant for others.’

Together with students of the Fontys Hogeschool in Tilburg, Daedelus is making music all week long and will finish a track every day. These tracks will be posted on our blog each day and will be presented by Daedelus during his set at 013, Kleine Zaal this Saturday. He will be performing this special set from 21:15h – 22:15h. Pretty much every rework of a Burial tune comes with a disclaimer like this one: “I know. No one should remix or edit Burial, but I found a beat I made with a friend almost two years ago and I wanted to share this with you guys.” And just like Shlohmo’s recent stab at recreating the dubstep diety’s music, German producer Essáy‘s edit of the drifty “Dog Shelter” sounds pretty great. So, maybe we should change this whole hands-off approach to Burial’s music after all. Just a thought.

Young German deephouse/techno producer Motor City Drum Ensemble, who we confirmed as part of the XLR8R program for Incubate 2011 this afternoon, released a new remix which is available for free download via XLR8R. Check out more info about the track and the download link over at XLR8R.

“With the recon of one of my old hard discs, I found a folder titled ‘lost jams’. These turned out to be RA-X tracks, some transferred from tape, some gathering digital dust. I released a bunch of records as RA-X since the early 90’s, most of them heavy and distorted electro on several labels. Insert obligatory discogs list here. In the period 1993-2003, I recorded loads of material, some of it is lost forever when I accidently threw out a box of cassette tapes that turned out to be master recordings. These are salvaged now and digitalized to start a new life on the digital plain. I have sequenced them for you and added a sleeve. The metadata for these tracks is impossible to find, the only way to determine the date for these jams some of the info I have written on the tape. From the vaults again. Feel free to share at will.”

Meet Clams Casino. This guy is the mastermind behind several Lil B (who cancelled his Incubated show earlier this year) hits like “I’m God” and “Motivation”. Weird thing is, he hasn’t even met Lil B before! He just sent him a message on Myspace and that’s how things got started. Read all about it in this interview he did with Pitchfork recently. Clams Casino has got a new instrumental mixtape out for you to download, which will be out soon on Type Records!

Music from Saharan Cellphones vol. 1 and vol. 2 are free compilations of sounds taken from cellphones across Africa. The usage of cellphones in Africa these days is more for music and video playback, recording, and transmission than talking/SMSing. Christopher from the blog Sahel Sounds describes this as follows (read more after the break):

“As all the weary passengers sit, they all are pulling out cellphones, and soon the mass is illuminated by little square blue screens. There is no cellular phone reception here — this is not important. They are not making calls. Rather, what ensues is an orchestra of tinny digital audio, a menagerie of sound, beamed out like starlight over the plain.”

Dutch nueva cumbia producer and one of Generation Bass head honcho’s, Sonido Del Principe, was spinning records last weekend and found that the empty, hard hitting beats of the recent moombahton wave blend more than perfectly with his own nu cumbia productions. Last month, the brand-new digital label of Generation Bass released their very first album: Herr Müller – uh!. For its second release, Generation Bass drops some dark global bass by UnSub on the album Exhibit A. The album is now available via all major digital music stores including iTunes, E-Music and Amazon.

This female dubstep producer from Australia incorporates elements of Gospel, Blues and Middle Eastern folklore and thus draws on a very distinct vibe. This is heavy dubstep, driven forth by wobbling, aggro bass lines! UnSub adds melody and energy, lacking in most of this stuff produced at the moment. Is it because she’s a gal? There aren’t many around right now throwing this kind of weight around.

The internet makes downloading quite easy. The Norwegian Liberal Party Venstre suggests that downloading music from the internet should be legalized. Grutle Kjellson and Ivar Peersen from Enslaved didn’t quite agree, so they went up to the leader of Venstres farm to “download” one of his freerange mountain-sheep to see how he’d feel about his own suggestion…
