In the first month of this year we heard the second record of Cloud Nothings; Attack On Memory. The lo-fi indierockband from Cleveland worked for this record together with grunge producer Steve Albini, who also worked together with Pixies and Nirvana. Together with Albini they sounded more focused and made a really nice record.

And because the last show in Effenaar where we gave away tickets for, Factory Floor, was cancelled we decided that we’re gonna give away a new bunch of tickets. Next sunday, at the 27th of May, the boys from Cloud Nothings will play at our favorite venue from Eindhoven and that’s why you can win 2×2 tickets! London trio Factory Floor is coming back to the Netherlands again. The band, who have signed to James Murphy‘s DFA Records this fall, is coming at the 17th of May to Effenaar. With their music, which The Guardian describe as synth-noir, it sounds like they’re mixing modern-day electronic music with ’80s synthwave. That’s why it isn’t weird to hear that New Order drummer Stephen Morris is fan of the band and is working with them as we speak.

We have already two contests this week (tickets for INDIE INDIE and Chelsea Wolfe) and now we can add another one; We’re gonna give 2×2 tickets for this awesome gig where by the way NON-Records finest artists Palmbomen and Marius are playing as well. The Jacuzzi Boys got noticed in our reports from Eurosonic and SXSW and now they are heading towards The Netherlands for their European tour. If you like unpolished garagerock that make you dance and scream, you might want to visit Area 51 the 6th of April.

If you want to see a live performance of Black Lips, you better go to Eindhoven at the 16th of December. They are performing in the biggest indoor skatepark of Europe, Area51. A concert that is an collaboration with the Effenaar who wants to host intimate concerts throughout Eindhoven. So who doesn’t want to see the garage punkpop band Black Lips in a massive skatepark? Effenaar exists for 40 years now (if you haven’t noticed yet). That’s pretty damn long, so you should congratulate them for it. And you can. We have already given away tickets for D.A.F. and Shaking Godspeed amongst others, and now we give away 3×2 tickets for Low Yo Yo Stuff on December 7th!

After the huge succes in Theater De Machinefabriek in Groningen, Noord-Nederlands Toneel (Northern Dutch Theater) brings the Captain Beefheart-inspired Low Yo Yo Stuff (LYYS) to De Effenaar.
In this play, Frank Lammers plays Rikkie Black, a fan of Captain Beefheart who thinks he’s born in the head of the Captain. The idea behind LYYS  is retrieving the artistic and social freedom. LYYS is a search to the ‘Lost Record’, the album that was recorded by Beefheart in 73, but never released. It’s a hallucinating trip through life and the world of Captain Beefheart. Don van Vliet (aka Captain Beefheart), just recently deceased, formed the group Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band in the sixties. Their album ‘Trout Mask Replica’ was produced by Frank Zappa and sent out a shockwave through the pop-, rock and bluesculture. His music contains elements of blues, acid-rock and free-jazz.

Now for our next show: a rockshow with some of the best bands from our tiny country at this moment: Shaking Godspeed and Traumahelikopter in De Effenaar on November 18th!

If you love hardrock music and if you visit shows regularly, you know what to expect of Shaking Godpeed. For those who don’t:
They played hundreds of shows already and it made them a smoking rockmachine. Their sound lies somewhere between The Stooges, Deep Purple, garage and hardrock. Their album ‘Awe’ got virtually only positive reviews.
Support-act is Traumahelikopter. And yes, we love Traumahelikopter. We like them so much that they’re performing on the next edition of Incubated this week (in collaboration with Popronde). So if you can’t make it out this Thursday (but you should. It’s FREE!) in Paradox for Incubated 11, make sure you’ll arrive early for this garagapunk outfit from Groningen!

Who releases us?

But first: De Effenaar is celebrating their 40th birthday! Congratulations guys! And thanks for the 2 x 2 tickets for Deutsch-Amerikanische Freundschaft exclusive Benelux show on 28-10!
This legendary collective doesn’t need any introduction. Their ’81 releases ‘Alles Ist Gut’ and ‘Gold Und Liebe’, full of Elektronische Köpermusic, stood beside the cradle that brought forth genres as techno, house and popmusic in general.
Now after 30 years, the duo (Gabi Delgado-López and Robert Görl) return to the Effenaar.

So, in short: that means you can finally experience tracks such as ‘Der Rauber und der Prinz’, ‘El Que’, ’Der Sherrif’ en ‘Du Bist DAF’ live! Geil!

With the Roadburn 2011 festival just around the corner, we have selected some of the wisest men in the music business to recommend you their favorites! This is the second part in a five part series. In this part, Tijs Heesterbeek has recommended his favorites! Does his name sound familiar to you? He was our marketing chief at Incubate and now for Effenaar in Eindhoven!

Quest for Fire: All the hip, new bands embracing the shoegaze craze (there: I just created a new word: the shoecraze!) have listened closely to bands like My Bloody Valentine, Ride and The Jesus & Mary Chain. That’s OK. They’re great bands. But a lot of those hipsters forget one defining band: The English psychedelic rockers of Spacemen 3. All but one: Quest for Fire is a fourpiece from Canada who have just released their second album Lights From Paradise. It consists of eight songs heavily inspired by sixties psychedelic nuggets, seventies krautrock and eighties shoegaze. Like the mighty fuzz of Spacemen 3. Their release on TeePee already is one of my personal favorites of 2011.

Dragontears: Lorenzo Woodrose and I started off on the wrong foot. I saw his former band Baby Woodrose a couple of times, but I always thought he was just a cheap knockoff of Monster Magnet and Dave Wyndorf. But while Dave Wyndorf wasn’t the rockgod he pretended to be (Dave Wyndorf having an overdose and not dying is like Charlie Sheen having an overdose and… well… dying), Lorenzo recorded another album with his other band Dragontears. The result came out through the mighty Bad Afro Records at the end of 2010 and was called Turn On Tune In Fuck Off!! (another drug-metaphor, did Lorenzo try to make something clear to his master?). The result is pretty astonishing: It’s a rollercoaster ride between Led Zep, 13th Floor Elevators and… Monster Magnet. But the kind of Monster Magnet that was scary. Not the Monster Magnet who has videos made by Hype Williams.

Weedeater: Just one word: filth! More words? Pure filth! Like playing a Reo Speedealer record (does anybody remember that band?) on 33,33 RPM.

After their current tour with White Lies, Crocodiles will play a few headline shows as well! This lo-fi/shoegaze two piece has risen from the ashes of The Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower back in 2008. They have quickly built a steady following by creating music somewhere in between The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Jesus and the Mary Chain. Wildbirds & Peacedrums are a contemporary experimental two piece hailing from Sweden consisting of singer Mariam Wallentin and drummer Andreas Werliin. Their ‘instruments’ consist of her powerful vocals and his unorthodox percussion/drumming, resulting in a powerful, innovative sound. Their music is a hybrid of folk, blues and various other types of music.
