Man from the South is playing with Bird at Ketelhuis in Eindhoven this sunday, January 22nd. The show starts at 15:00 and it ends at 18:00 and you can win tickets! Man from the South is a solo-project of Paul van Hulten. He is also known as Paul from Woody & Paul. It will be the first time he plays solo on Eindhoven’s soil.

Ketelhuis is a beautiful industrial room which accommodate the perfect atmosphere and acoustic for the melancholic semi-acoustics song from Man from the South. His supporting program is Bird. Bird is a trio from the Netherlands. Two guys and a woman playing indie/folk like acoustic songs. They make records DIY-style and playing at places where there’s a breathing space for music. A place where Bird feels at home.

Performance “Fanta Maria in haar Dependance van Goedheid”

‘A fairytale like musical performance in the days before Christmas inpired by the relationship between Robinson Crusoë and Friday. The installation Portable Lambaréné, made by Dick Verdult on the Dommel riverbank, will be the location for the performance. In Lambaréné (Gabon, Africa) Albert Schchweitzer built a leprosy hospital. Verdult has been fascinated by Schweitzer as saviour in Africa for a long time. For him the relationship between Robinson and Friday is similar. Misunderstandings that come into being and remain when meeting the unknown.’

VERTIGO – A LIVE ELECTRONICS JOURNEY
After a succesful first edition on February 5, the Adapter collective presents their audio/video project Vertigo for the second time this year. The program consist of a number of live IDM/electronica acts who are linked to an equal number of video artists. This allows for one-off, mostly improvised a/v-performances unique to this night.

In the past years Kettel enriched the great catalogues of labels such as Planet Mu, Neo Ouija, Kracfive, Clone and Dub. His music covers the vast terrain between electronica, hiphop, IDM and more classically conceived music. He is well-known for his playful, spontaneous melodies and organic sounds similar to Aphex Twin, Jega and Plaid.

Graphic designer PixyBox was first introduced to the making of visual art at the Academie voor Popcultuur. In her visuals she combines custom-made material with animation and real-life footage, mixed at times with iconic pop culture imagery.

Morrissey (The Smiths) recently played some new songs on BBC live, which were up for streaming afterwards at The NJ Underground. These three tracks can also be streamed below. During this session Morrissey also revealed that his latest studio album is ready, but he has yet to find a label for it. The former Smiths frontman is set to perform at Muziekgebouw Frits Philips in Eindhoven, Holland later this year.

Gum Takes Tooth is a duo of Thomas Fuglesang on live trap drums, physically wired into home grown electronic instruments, bare circuit boards, tweaked, moulded and mangled in real-time by Jussi Brightmore. Frequent double drum live action is added by Valentina Magaletti. Always a totally live symbiosis of unique and manually manipulated home grown electronics driven by a dense and expansive percussion attack: no guitars, bass, keyboards, backing tracks or laptops featured in Gum Takes Tooth!

E*Rock:

E*Rock is a producer, director, animator and graphic designer from Portland, OR. E*Rock is the co-founder of the Audio Dregs label and also runs the label Fryk Beat. He also produces webbased music videos with the people from Wyld File. His artwork was shown in Holland earlier at Impakt in Utrecht and at our own Incubate festival. During the 2007 edition of Incubate festival (still called ZXZW back then) E*Rock was invited by our artist in residence, the graphic designer Zeloot. Paul B. Davis:

While still in college Paul B. Davis started out by hacking videogame cartridges. His idea was to create an art and music experience out of just a videogame. This was only the beginning of his work. Most people know him from his videogame hacking or his record the ‘8-bit Construction Set’, a half dj battle record/half concept album. The unique thing is that the inside tracks are audio data which can be dubbed to cassette tape and then played on an Atari or Commodore computer. This album was released on Beige Records, the label he started with brothers in arms Cory Arcangel, Joe Beuckman and Joseph Bonn.

Davis also created the World Cassette Jockey Championships, the worlds only cassette-tape DJ battle. He also collaborated with AIDS-3D, who will be featured in this special tomorrow. Davis is also part of the Creators Project, a global network dedicated to the celebration of creativity, culture and technology.

Jimmy Joe Roche:

We’ll start off this series with an old friend from Incubate: Jimmy Joe Roche. Together with Dan Deacon, Roche was one of the artists in residence at last years’ Incubate festival. While in residency, Dan Deacon and Jimmy Joe Roche collaborated on a piece of video art. Material was shot at biological farm ‘t Schop in Hilvarenbeek and in the surroundings of Tilburg. During the festival, the movie was shown at the farm before a performance of Dan Deacon.

His videos have been screened internationally in venues including the Royal Academy of Arts in London, Roskilde Music Festival in Denmark, Boston Institute of Contemporary Art, J. Paul Getty Museum , Clair-obscur Filmfestival in Switzerland, and Baltimore Musesum of Art to name only a few.

The New Psychedelica will feature sculptures and installations from Harm van den Dorpel (NL), Jim Drain (US), Nik Kosmas en Daniel Keller (Aids-3D) (US), Sergio Recabarren (CL) en Ben Sansbury (UK), next to videoart from Antoine Catala (FR), Paul B Davis (US), E*rock (US), Carlos Lazslo (US), Rosa Menkman (NL), Brenna Murphy (US), Jimmy Joe Roche (US), Jeremy Shaw (CA), Yoshi Sodeoka (US) en Daniel Swan (UK).

Temporary Art Centre in Eindhoven have lined up 3 special concerts in a series called ‘Vreemd Volk’.

The first in the series will take place this Friday (March 4th) with British singer-songwriter The Great Park, followed by the minimalistic, acoustic blues from Above the Tree March 24th and finally the psychfolk artist Edgar Wappenhalter from Belgium on April 16, who also played at Incubate  2010!

Support of the evening comes from The Puddle Parade (NL), Esprit D’Escalier (NL) and The Urpf Lanze (BE)

AreaFiftyOne skatepark is een platform voor de skate(board) cultuur en de ontmoetingsplek waar sporters en creatievellingen samenkomen voor recreatie, sport, muziek, kunst en design, om te kijken, om geïnspireerd te raken en vooral om mee te doen. Terry Riley is one of the biggest names in minimal classical music. He was one of the first composer to work with tape loops and composed music for the famous Kronos Quartet. He wasn’t only an influence for musicians like John Adams and Philip Glass, but also inspired Pete Townshend to use keyboards in songs like Won’t Get Fooled Again and Baba O’Riley (which name is a tribute to Terry Riley).

This Friday, the 22nd of October, Riley will play in Muziekgebouw Frits Philips in Eindhoven for € 25,-.

Effenaar programmeurs Robert Schaeffer en Tom Ketelaar bloggen traditioneel vanaf The Great Escape showcase festival in Brighton, Engeland. Vorige jaren zagen ze onder andere The Temper Trap en The Ting Tings voordat ze in Nederland doorbraken.

Jawel hoor, we zijn weer in Brighton. Wat een heerlijk gevoel geeft dit bescheiden kuststadje toch. Met zo’n 250.000 inwoners net iets groter dan ons eigen Eindhoven. De levendigheid in deze stad is echter niet te vergelijken met Eindhoven. Waar Brighton vroeger vooral een kustplaats was waar Britse bejaarden graag naartoe kwamen, is het tegenwoordig een hippe en unieke plek waar jonge creatieven zich verzameld hebben en er vooral veel muziek gemaakt wordt (o.a. Blood Red Shoes, Pulled Apart By Horses, Fatboy Slim en The Kooks komen er vandaan, en Nick Cave woont er). Bedenk je dat London op zo’n 45 minuten treinen van Brighton ligt. Veel creatieven trekken uit de grote stad weg naar het relatief rustige en gezellige kustplaatsje Brighton..

We beginnen onze eerste Great Escape dag in Brighton dit jaar met een ontbijt in ons fantastische Royal Albion Hotel, ook wel het Royal Shabby Hotel. Mooi gelegen aan de kust, aan de kop van de ooit zo befaamde Brighton Pier en om de hoek bij het fantastische speeltje van koning George IV: The Royal Pavilion. De allure van de jaren 1920 wordt maar al te graag in stand gehouden, alleen is men de afgelopen 25 jaar vergeten om de boel af en toe een beetje op te knappen. Onze kamer is gelukkig aan de zeekant van het Hotel, dat beloofd een magistraal uitzicht. In alle helaasheid der dingen is hij echter gesitueerd in de kelder. We hebben dus een prachtig uitzicht op de onderkant van de stoep. Ook mooi.

Na het ontbijt gaan we inchecken voor het festival, alwaar we snel na het ophalen van de delegate passes op collegaprogrammeur Andre van Appelpop stuiten. Eerste Nederlander gespot dus. Later zal blijken dat Nederland ook dit jaar weer behoorlijk is vertegenwoordigd op The Great Escape (en ja, er spelen ook weer Nederlandse bands dit jaar!).

Na een magistrale platenjacht, een zonnig biertje aan zee,  en een goed bordje Oosters bij Wagamama beginnen we deze editie in The Revenge (normaal gezien de grootste gaydisco van Brighton) met de laatste twee nummers van An Emerald City. Een echte indruk krijgen is dus lastig, maar we houden het op een soort bangrha Mogwai, met viool en electrieke sitarspeler gehuld in korte broek en paisly vleermuisvleugels. Het is een (post)rock band die graag de randjes opzoekt zonder daarbij de song uit het oog te verliezen. Deze Nieuw-Zeelandse band resideert tegenwoordig in Berlijn blijkt later, nadat een van de bandleden later op de avond per ongeluk ons bier van tafel stoot en we aan de praat raken. Ze schijnen al eens met The Datsuns in Nederland getourd te hebben.

Op naar Jamaica! Die spelen in Horatio’s, een grote bruine kroeg die midden in het lunapark op het einde van de Brighton Pier is gelegen. De meningen zijn binnen onze delegatie verdeeld over leuk of niet, maar liefhebbers van Phoenix en vintage Soulwax moeten het zeker even checken. Gezien de publieksopkomst kan het nog best wat gaan worden met deze franse band.

We verwachten veel van Gabby Young, en waren daardoor zo vroeg in de kelder van The Queens Hotel, dat we bij wijze van verrassing nog een paar lekkere nummertjes van Citadels konden meepakken. Wat een leuke band zeg. The Chemical Song is een lekkere indie pop single, die hun steengoeie promo dame daarna in tweevoud aan ons wist te slijten. Op vinyl natuurlijk.

Dan Gabby Young. Op haar myspace klonk ze als een Florence Emerald of Caro & The Machine. Live heeft ze niet haar 8 koppige Other Animals meegenomen, maar treed ze op als duo. Maar met zijn tweeën en staat het ook als een huis. Florence, burleske, roaring twenties, een zeer interessante mix van stijlen. En wat een interessante verschijning is die Gabby met haar vuurrode 20′s kapsel en moderne variant van een Charlston jurkje. En wat een stem!! Van zuiver hoog piepend als een Theremin tot gepassioneerde, bijna balkaneske popzang. Een dame on in de gaten te houden!

Ook hoog op het verlanglijstje: Japandroids, maar dat viel nog niet mee. We staan in de kuil achterin The Revenge, en dus zien we niks. Dan maar goed luisteren, maar helaas: bij binnenkomst excuseert de gitarist zich al voor het feit dat twee van zijn drie gitaar versterkers stuk zijn gegaan tijdens de gig, en dat alleen diegene voor het meest crappy geluid het nog doet. We horen inderdaad een brij van geluid van het drum en gitaar duo en kunnen er dus geen kaas van maken. Hopelijk morgen een herkansing.

Maar gelukkig kunnen we op ons gemak nog even blijven hangen om ons bier te laten omstoten door Emerald City en een intieme hometown gig van Blood Red Shoes mee te maken. Dat heeft toch wel een speciale gloed. De band begint met “ Getting Boring By the Sea” wat over Brighton gaat. Wij snappen echt niet hoe je zo’n nummer kunt schrijven over zo’n enerverende stad. Het was erg druk en zweterig in het bovenzaaltje, dus lieten we Laura en Steve voor wat het was en gingen we snel verder!

Yuck is een van de “most talked about bands” van het festival. Ze hebben het zelfde management als Franz Ferdinand en dat schijnt dan nogal wat te betekenen. Wij kunnen er echter niet over meepraten want omdat Tom Laura veel te graag nog even wilde spotten waren we te laat in The Corn Exchange. Wat een prachtige zaal trouwens!

Daar speelt ook Surfer Blood. Pitchfork lievelingen, geniaal t-shirt, maar deze vier college guys en Slash op de toetsen konden onze aandacht niet vasthouden. Leuke droge slacker humor tussendoor. Je kunt niet naar deze band luisteren zonder aan Vampire Weekend te denken of aan de presentatie van Pavement. De door Vampire Weekend geherintroduceerde Afrikaanse slag is niet van de lucht en dat is dan meteen de grote zwakte van de band. Platenmaatschappijen zijn blijkbaar op zoek naar een nieuwe Vampire Weekend, en met een goeie single (wij hoorden hem nog niet) kan het wel eens 3FM materiaal gaan worden.

Wij kiezen eieren voor ons geld, en gaan afbutsen bij Jaguar Love (bekend van de t-shirts van onze gewaardeerde collega Niels Guns). Jaguar Love is de nieuwe band van ex Blood Brothers blerkees … Hij heeft naast zijn laptop ook zijn gekke vrienden meegenomen op drums en gitaar. Aanstekelijke liedjes maar dan de opgefokte speedversie. Foo Fighters op 45 toeren. Letterlijk, dus met pitched-up piepstemmetje.

De naborrel was met in het Queens hotel met NL export held Ruud Berends, Robert van  Roosje en Friendly Fires. Het werd nog heel gezellig met de Letse en Finse delegatie. Tips uit Finland: De nieuwe Disco Ensemble en omdat ons land heel goed is in voetbal en schaatsen, moeten we toch echt die Finse volkssport eens gaan proberen die beide sporten combineert. Wij denken dan toch vooral aan lekke ballen.

Maya Hayuk, who has always been fascinated by planetariums and their way of literally bringing space closer to us, does not like to waste her time looking at nothing. This was also true of the astronomers who first dared to aim the Hubble telescope at areas in space that had thus far been known as empty white spots. They did not know whether they were going to see anything, but were convinced that there had to be something there. With the help of coloured filters – blue, green, red and almost infrared – they sure enough discovered that, what up until that moment had been regarded as absolute emptiness, actually contained the most distant galaxies ever perceived.
For the first time in human history it was possible to depict the oldest galaxies that had come into existence during the so-called ‘dark era’, the time shortly after the Big Bang when the first celestial bodies began to heat up the cold, dark universe again. The resulting clouds of light were given the name Ultra Deep Fields.

Maya Hayuk’s work, be it her large abstract murals or her smaller works on paper, is imbued with symmetry and colour. It is midway between the stellar clouds that the Hubble Telescope allowed us to see and the abstract patterns on Mexican blankets, Rorschach tests and holograms. Using a symbolism that also leaves room for spirituality, she expresses her love for what is positive and whole. For Hayuk, love eventually conquers evil, a motto that she also upholds as a member of the Positive Future Prophecy Posse.

With Ultra Ultra Deep Fields, Maya Hayuk builds on the installation commissioned by the 2009 Scope Art Fair, which she realised jointly with fellow artist Ben Wolf, and a recent exhibition at Gallery 16 in San Francisco.
Visitors to the Ultra, Ultra Deep Fields – Hayuk prefers to call them passengers – are given the chance to penetrate further and deeper into ‘tangible spaces’, thanks to the bright colours, video constructions, sounds and paintings that seem to go on for ever. A large ‘planetarium’ dominates the central area of MU as if it were half a disco ball or a head. It is surrounded by smaller satellites, each offering its own spatial experiences. Ben Wolf will mainly contribute light and shadow installations.
