The Sonic Acts festival is well-known for interdisciplinary projects and the focus on developments at the intersections of art, technology, music and science. The festival consists of live performances, a conferance, film programme and an exhibition. The fourteenth edition will take place 23-26 February at various locations in Amsterdam

The theme for this edition is ‘Travelling Time’ and offers an experience of time and ideas relating to time. Time is a complex and ongoing technological developments continually change our notions of time. Communication networks operate at light speed and computers process data in real-time without human mediation, resulting in a gap between machine time and the human experience of it.

Masterclasses
In collaboration with the Stedelijk Museum and STEIM, Sonic Acts will host a series of Master Classes as part of this year’s festival theme Travelling Time. The master classes will be supervised by Catherine Christer Hennix, Peter Kubelka, Olaf Nicolai, Pauline Oliveros and Tino Sehgal

The master classes provide a unique opportunity to work with five internationally renowned artist whose work critically reflects on time and timing. In a concentrated and intimate setting, participants will gain insights into the ‘artist’ concepts, creative processes and methods of composition and production through hands-on workshops and seminars.

The deadline for applications is February 12. Send a biography and a short statement of motivation to take part in a specific master class to masterclass@sonicacts.com.

February 20 – Olaf Nicolai
A German artist whose conceptual approach and use of diverse media question the way in which we view our everyday environment. He also translates theories from science and the arts into aesthetic-artistic idioms, rendering them accessible in a new context. His works deal with the perception of time in the reception of art. Nicolai has participated in international solo and group exhibitions. His works were shown at Documenta X, and at the 49th and 51st Venice Biennales. Several of his works can be found in public collections, such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Thyssen Bornemisza Art

February 21 & 22 – Catherine Christer Hennix
Composer, philosopher, mathematician and visual artist. In the 1960’s and 1970’s, she worked with illustrious figures such as La Monte Young and Pandit Pran Nath, who were very important for her own work. She has frequently collaborated with the American anti-art philosopher, composer and violinist Henry Flynt. Hennix also draws inspiration from Japanese Gagaku music and early vocal music of Perotinus and Leoninus. All her major compositions, including The Electric Harpsichord, are regarded as part of an ongoing, endless cycle. Hennix’ two-day master class will investigate the relationship between modern music, programming and linguistics, and relate the latter to mathematical structures.

February 22 – Peter Kubelka
A multifaceted artist and theoretician who has worked in film, cooking, music, architecture, speech and writing. He communicates through lectures, which also use non-verbal elements  “to free our world view from being the exclusive property of language.” Kubelka’s cinematographic work is short and highly condensed. His “Metric Films” preceded and laid the foundations for structural cinema. Kubelka will lead a master class on film and cooking.

February 23 – Pauline Oliveros
Composer, performer and humanitarian, she is an important pioneer in American music and electronic music. She has explored sound for five decades, breaking new ground for herself and others. Through improvisation, electronic music, ritual, teaching and meditation, she created a body of work with such breadth of vision that is profoundly affects those who experience it. Oliveros will lead a Deep Listening session.

February 23 – Tino Sehgal
A British-German artist whose works, which he calls “constructed situations,” involve one or more people carrying out instructions conceived by the artist. What all of Sehgal’s works have in common is that they reside only in the space and time they occupy, and in the memory of the work and its reception. The artist himself describes his works as “constructed situations,” whose materials are the human voice, language, movement and interaction, without the production of physical objects. His pieces are choreographies that are regularly staged in museums or galleries, and continuously executed for the entire duration of a show. In 2012, he will present a newly commissioned work for the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern, London.

What’s up on Monday September 12?
Finally… the time has come. Monday September 12 Incubate 2011will begin! It’s this moment that we as Incubate, our crew, all the volunteers etc. have been working towards for the last year. This is what we’ve all done it for. So what can you expect to happen this beautiful Monday in September?During the day there will be lot’s to do, even before the official opening is set to happen. In the Bibliotheek Tilburg, Dimitar Solakovwill be present during the entire festival with his exhibition ‘Youth’. At the BKKC the New Jacks 3.0 exhibition (which was officially opened yesterday) will take place. Some more exhibitions which you will be able to attend this day are The Lost Relay, our @ducate posterprojectand Whatspace/Let’s Jam. If you fancy catching a movie or two, you can visit the Film Foyer where a open source film is played, as well as the movie Noise and Resistance. Of course you can discover more than 100 pianos throughout the entire city as a part of our Play Me, I’m Yours project.Festival kick-off
On Monday 12th of September, 18.00h sharp, we will officially kick off Incubate 2011 at the Faxx Building, Dunantstraat 1 in Tilburg, NL we hope to kick off with you, music, art, a speech, Vedett and a BBQ. Our alderman of culture Marjo Frenk will open the festival withOmnivoordracht, a sample speech written by Christiaan Weijts and annotated by Boef en de Gelogeerde Aap. This speech is the ultimate speech, written for all audiences at all places.

We’ll also open our Open Source Expo. For the Open Source Expo we made a call for Artists to send in work. We have had an overwhelming amount of responses. Amateurs as well as professionals are enthusiastic to participate in this event. No committee, no exclusion of artists, no quality assessment, everything is permitted. You decide what you do or don’t like! Traditional painting next to conceptual, video-installation next to ceramics. Prepare for a visual overload!

After that we kick off with Play Me I’m Yours by Luke Jerram. During Incubate Tilburg will be full with 101 street piano’s. Festival artist Matthew Ship will kick off by playing some tunes. 50 kids from the Factorium music school will then go out to play the pianos in the city.

Music program
The music program for this Monday will kick off at Paradox, whereMatthew Shipp will play, followed by the highly anticipated The War on Drugs. At the Cul de Sac we will present the Hollandse Nieuwe stage, which features Richie Dagger and The Chase Club. At the Kleine Zaal in 013 popcentre we’ll start with the indiefolk fromMegafaun, followed by our Syrian friend Omar Souleyman, who after rocking the hell out of Lowlands will play another exclusive show at Incubate 2011.

Between 12 and 18 September we’re welcoming thousands of visitors for the seventh edition of Incubate. The Fall, Battles, Glen Hansard and Health are a few of the more than two hundred cutting edge artists that bring music, film, art, debate and dance to Tilburg.

Artistic director Vincent Koreman: “I am incredibly proud of this program. Every year, we show that we continue to innovate and grow at the same time as a festival. This year’s highlights for me personally are the enormous amount of applications for the open source program, the great three-day dance program curated by XLR8R and getting The Fall to Incubate.”

Among the large number of artists that perform during the week in Tilburg are British (post) punk legends The Fall and Steve Ignorant (Crass), next to upcoming artists like EMA and Austra. There are special appearances at the Nature Theatre in Oisterwijk, on Friday, September 16 with Oscar winner Glen Hansard, known from his band The Frames and on Saturday, September 17 Battles. Psychedelic rock band Wooden Shjips will play a unique concert on Saturday the 17th in collaboration with video artist Wineke Gartz.

For lovers of dance music, there’s a lot to enjoy to as well. Among others, Jackmaster, Loefah, Theo Parrish and Silkie will be behind the turntables that weekend. Music publication XLR8R curates a three day program with what they view as the most important artists at the moment. Next to the XLR8R curated program, there are several dubstep, moombahton and breakcore events and collaborations between dj’s from all over the world.

Punk legend Steve Ignorant curates a program at one of the Incubate venues, just like jazz drummer Chris Corsano. Both programs provide exciting collaborations between artists. Collaboration is the main theme of this years Incubate.

We have also received much response to the call to public to present their own work for the open source programs. More than one hundred people will present their own works at the open source expo, twenty-five people will produce seven days of non-stop radio, loads of films are submitted for the film program plus we’ll serve our own open source dance show. All these programs are filled by people from the Incubate audience itself.

Besides the music program, Incubate presents the Do It Yourself conference. During this conference author Michael Azerrad will give a keynote speech, artist Bill Drummond performs his The17 project and punk legend Steve Ignorant will be interv iewed. Besides, there are several discussion panels throughout the day. Visitors of the conference can determine the price for the conference themselves through the pay-what-you-want-principle.

On Monday, September 12, a member of the city council of Tilburg will open Incubate along with fifty children from the Tilburg music school Factorium who will be playing on the dozens of pianos in and around Tilburg which are part of the Play Me, I’m Yours project by New York based artist Luke Jerram. Omar Souleyman, The War on Drugs and Megafaun also perform at the first evening of the festival. The weekdays music program also contains artists like Health, Nosaj Thing and Aura Noir.

Incubate is taking place in Tilburg, the Netherlands between 12 and 18 September. Tickets are available via our website, at Free Record Shop in the Netherlands and Belgium and at Sounds Music Store and the 013 box office in Tilburg.

Maybe you have read about this before. Maybe you really liked it. In that case, we have good news: The  Night Of The Unexpected is back. And this time, not only in Amsterdam but also in Eindhoven and Utrecht.

The Night of the Unexpected focuses on new developments in contemporary music. Acts include former Incubated act Hauschka (listen here), Thundercat ft. Austin Peralta (debut album produced by Flying Lotus to be released in August, watch here), Kid Koala, Lean Left (The Ex guitar section and the Vandermark/Nilssen-Love duo), Erik Bosgraaf, Sarah Nicolls, Lunapark and Slagwerk Den Haag. – Please check the official website for the exact line-up, not all artists will play all three days.

And even more good news: All of these names are free to visit on Monday to Thursday!

The local boys from Grudgefuck host the second room in MIDI Theatre on Saturday September 17th while the main room is curated by XLR8R. Performing are Limewax, Bong-Ra, GG Skeng, Dom Perignon, GInger Kid, Strange Fruit, Bubtek and Zuur79.

Added to the film program are Stardust and Long Live the New Flesh.

The KOMA Elektronik Salon creates true analog audio effect pedals and will present their outcome for the first time during Incubate.

Unfortunately, we also have to tell you that Indian cancelled their Europe tour. Herder will replace the band.

Silkie (UK) – 17/9

According to Boomkat, Silkie is one of those dubstep artists who maintain the original, deep and heavy dubstep sounds while hovering on the edges and never fully integrate in the scene. We couldn’t agree more! His techno synth driven, soulful, deep dubstep basslines eventually brought him to Mala’s (Digital Mystikz) Deep Medi Musik label and of course to Tilburg!


Elgato (UK) – 16/9

One of the newest signings to Hessle Audio (Ben UFO’s label, also playing at this year’s Incubate) is UK’s Elgato. From the same camp that brought us acts like James Blake, Ramadanman/Pearson Sound and James Blake comes yet another amazing techno, dubstep, grime and uk garage crossover act. For fans of deep sub basses, cut up r’n’b vocals and grooving garage rhythms.

Bert On Beats (EST) – 16/9

Judging his music, you wouldn’t think Bert on Beats (aka DJ Critikal) is actually from Tallinn, Estonia. His Dj-sets and productions are a huge source of UK Bass (Dubstep, grime, garage), Kuduro and Cumbia beats. He did a remix contest in 2009 for Daniel Haaksman (Incubate 2010) who picked him up for his Man Recordings label, followed by banging releases and remixes for the likes of Buraka Som Sistema and Ku Bo!


Randy Barracuda (FIN) – 16/9

Skweeeeeeeee. Finnish skweee brought to the swampy Netherlands by Randy Barracuda himself. He has been running the Harmönia label with a couple of associates for years now, bringing us diverse skweee artists from around the globe. He will now do the musical talking himself during this Global Mash-up duel.

DJ Quien (BO) – 17/9

DJ since year 2000 and producer since 2002 he’s been a musician for more than 15 years and is a member of the oi+bass crew, the biggest dj collective in Bolivia.

Dennis Tyfus (BE) – 16/9

Dennis Tyfus is a Belgian artist who works and lives in Antwerp. He’s an allround enfant terrible and therefor perfect for the Chris Corsano in Residence.

Muthoni The Drummer Queen (KG) – 17/9

Muthoni The Drummer Queen is not a stranger in the Netherlands anymore, after working and performing with Amsterdam based act Bronstibock last year. But this talented poet and songwriter will return to Tilburg for Global Mashups as well! She blends salsa, kwaito, afro-rock, taarab, rap, Floetry and R&B, delivered in an experimental “Floetry” (spoken poetry) package.


Hope Masike (ZI) – 17/9

All the way from Zimbabwe comes rising star Hope Masike. She grew up in a very musical family where she gained inspiration from traditional Zimbabwean music. She joined College of Music Ethnomusicology, where she also gained knowledge of music genres like jazz, blues and reggae from other countries. Her music, played on the traditional mbira instrument “seduces, heals, inspires, exites and gives hope.”


Steve Rutta / X-Plastaz (ZI) – 16/9

Steve Rutta performed at a festival in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) for the first time in 1999, while he was still looking like a six year old kid. Yet his rhymes made an amazing impression which eventually even brings him to Tilburg for the first time! He will be joined by X Plastaz, a group from the same country, blending traditional Masaai music and clothing with modern hip-hop.


Ronald Diaz (GUA) – 16/9

Ronald Diaz is a dj from Guatemala who started developing his dj skills at the young age of just 13 years old. He is influenced by dj’s/producers like Ricardo Villalobos and Luciano, blending minimal techno with Latin American and African percussives. Diaz likes to call this “Afro-Techno” himself and is not afraid to let the ground shake during his Incubate 2011 performance!

Fleck (GR) – 17/9

Fleck is currently running big things from his studio in Greece, but will soon be hitting the Dutch stage for the first time as well. He’s currently signed to labels like Six Degrees and Generation Bass Records, but is also co-founder of Breathe Records together with DJ Booker. His deep dubstep sets are filled with reggae influences as well as some pure old school jungle beats.


Meneo (GUA) – 16/9

8bit, chiptune, global mashups

Exploding 8bit/chiptune reggaeton music, even praised by Diplo and the rest of the Mad Descent camp! Of course we’re talking about Meneo, the self proclaimed ‘electropical’ band. They have been terrorizing the Barcelona scene for a while but also performed at big festivals such as Dour and Primavera. We warn you: there’s a chance nudity will be present at this gig!


Process Rebel (US) – 17/9

Process Rebel is actually from America but currently lives in Amsterdam, where he’s working hard on his debut album. But in the past he already made countless appearances on releases and worked together with the likes of Dub Gabriel (Incubate 2010), Mc Zulu and Dr. Israel. His music is very very dubby dubstep with reggae influences. Kind of like The Bug on a well spent afternoon in a coffeeshop.


Richie Dagger (NL) – 12/9

Richie Dagger is actually Restless Youth minus bass player, but with Giel from the recently deceased Hooghwater on bass. Bringing back the rock in punk rock!

The Chase Club (NL) – 12/9

The Chase Club is a young indie/garage band from Eindhoven with members from punk bands like 69 Charger and The Reactionaries. This culminates in catchy, punk influenced garage pop songs.


Bird (NL) – 13/9

Bird from Eindhoven play acoustic indie/folk songs to gaze by, dream away to or simply drink beer to! For fans of Lou Barlow (Sebadoh), Bonnie Prince Billy, Blackheart Procession and beer.


The T.S. Eliot Appreciation Society (NL) – 13/9

The T.S. Eliot Appreciation Society is the alias of Tom Gerritsen, a new rising star from Utrecht who plays breathtaking acoustic folk/alt-country songs. We appreciate!

Vakantie (NL) – 14/9

Vakantie from Groningen is giving our biography writers a damn hard time to find (translated, the band name means “Holiday”), but when finally coming across a Soundcloud page, their mix of ambient and psychedelic certainly triggered our curiosity.

We can’t deny it, we’re a huge fan of bands coming from the Bonne Aparte/Adept/Eklin camp! Woud is a project by Wouter Venema and Keimpe Koldijk from these bands we just named, but this time making exciting, experimental sinister ambient music.

Anne Frank Zappa is a new project from the one and only Elle Bandita, together with children’s book writer Jerry Hormone and ! This time making garage punk noise and crazy mixtapes. Prepare for some serious ear damage.

According to their Tumblr, Apneu’s upcoming dates with Nirvana in the US were cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances, but we managed to give them a spot at Incubate 2011! Catchy lo-fi garage-pop from our capital city!

Unfortunately Indian had to cancel their whole tour, so they won’t be playing Incubate either, but we’ve found a very worthy replacement with Herder. This menacing horde from the north of the Netherlands incorporates foul souls of Urfaust, Dr. Doom, Aborted and a few more unholy covenants. Motörhead said ‘Everything louder than everything else’ to which Herder replied: Herder is harder.

Stardust

Stardust is the second part of the trilogy where Nicolas Provost investigates the boundaries of fiction and reality by filming everyday life with a hidden high resolution camera and editing the cinematic images into a fiction film. In Stardust, Provost takes his hidden camera to Las Vegas and films real Hollywood stars – Jon Voight, Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson, to turn the glorious and ambiguous power of the gambling capital into an exciting crime story.

Long Live the New Flesh

Long Live the New Flesh by Nicolas Provost is a found footage film in wich he uses existing fragments from horror films and turns them into a new film. Images that are typical of cult horror films have been mounted one after another in a terrifying, distorted collage. With distorted images that dissolve into each other, supported by a fragmented soundtrack, the viewer experiences the full range of feelings belonging to the horror genre.

The KOMA Elektronik Salon

KOMA Elektronik is a start-up company producing true analog audio effect pedals. 

Rooted in the DIY music scene, entrepreneurs Wouter Jaspers and Christian Zollner are in search for sounds out of the ordinary, effects that go beyond the industry standards, incorporating both technology from the world of guitar pedals and the world of modular synthesizers. They present their outcome for the first time to the public during Incubate!

Besides their two new pedals; the BD101, a Gate / Delay and the FT201, a State Variable Filter / 10 step sequencer, they will bring a modular synth and other instruments, so visitors can try out the pedals for themselves.Drop by and get ready to be KOMAnised!

We are very honored to announce English post-punk band The Fall for Incubate! Founded in 1977 and fronted ever since by Mark E. Smith, The Fall was first associated with the punk movement of the late 1970s. Out of all the late-’70s punk/post-punk bands, none were longer lived or more prolific than the Fall though. The band has always kept a steady eye on the future, undergoing numerous stylistic changes since their origination.

The Fall’s sound is characterized by an urgent and abrasive guitar-driven sound and Smith’s snarling vocals filled with bitter cynicism. The Fall have always maintained a strong cult following, and like many cult bands, inspired a whole new generation of underground bands. Their biggest fan was probably John Peel, famously stating “They are always different, they are always the same.”

Esben and The Witch (UK) – 17/9

Esben And The Witch is based on a dreamy Danish fairytale in which little children are being murdered. Pretty grim right? Musically this translates in a dark, evil gloomy atmosphere somewhere in between Fever Ray and Soap and Skin. No happy elves and cute animals in this fairytale but more like evil dark nights full of eerie creatures… Musically it’s indie rock that is all over the place, sometimes dark and epic, sometimes very minimalistic.

Natural Snow Buildings (FR) – 17/9

Natural Snow Buildings are Mehdi Ameziane and Solange Gularte, a duo from Vitré, France. Their music can be described as experimental psychedelic folk, heavily influenced by drones and ambient. In the same vein of artists like Jandek and Richard Youngs, Natural Snow Buildings have built an impressive oeuvre, yet barely play any live shows. As this one is taking place in the beautiful Pauluskerk venue you can be sure it’s going to be an exclusive one!

Han Bennink (NL) – 14/9

Born and raised by his father who was also a drummer, it’s no wonder that Han Bennink began hitting everything in sight at a very young age. It is said his first percussion instrument was a kitchen chair. After coming up on the freejazz and improv music scene Han founded the Instant Composers Pool, a group of Dutch avant-garde musicians who play together on and off. He also did performances with bands like The Ex and respected jazz artists like Eugene Chadbourne, Derek Bailey and Don Cherry. Han is still known for bringing objects on stage which he found before the show so every show is unique in it’s own way.

Alasdair Roberts (UK) – 17/9

Born and raised in central Scotland by former folk guitarist Alan Roberts, Alasdair Roberts began playing his guitar and writing music at a young age. After releasing some albums with his band Appendix Out, Roberts decided to go solo in 2001. He since then built up an impressive discography on his own and in the process also found time to collaborate with American singer/songwriters Will Oldham and Jason Molina. Alasdair’s music is best described as acoustic singer/songwriter folk.

The Joyous Cosmology (BE) – 17/9

The Joyous Cosmology are an intense freak-out collective from Antwerp. They take improvisation to its most extreme form, aiming for total freedom, fresh poetic associations and cosmic insights. With drums, synths, guitar, sax and a wide range of other instruments these joyous voyagers guide the listener to new dimensions of total synesthesia. The Joyous Cosmology is the latest addition to the Kraak program that will take place at NS16.

Constitu Sound (ARG) – 17/9

Constitu Sound are Pedro Buschi (Pipo) and Julio Lozano (DJ Pinchado). While Pedro is the guitar player for Dicj el Demasiado & Sus Exgerados, Julio is a DJ who mixes traditional cumbia music with electronics and with this laid the foundation for the current electro cumbia sound. Together they created Constitu Sound, named after the city Constitución (Uruguay), which is known for its cumbia parties. Live this translates into a weird electro pop/ psychedelica pop mashup, designed specifically for the dance floor.

Puzzle Muteson (UK) – 15/9

Puzzle Muteson is a British songwriter who sings along to his own charismatic folk songs while playing on his finger picked guitar. Puzzle recently recorded his 11-track debut album En Garde with collaborators and labelmates Nico Muhly and Valgeir Sigurðsson in the Greenhouse Studios in Iceland. Muteson is one of the artists from the highly acclaimed Bedroom Community stable, which also happens to be the home of Incubate 2011 artist Sam Amidon.

Safari Park (UK) – 17/9

“Fuzzy indie pop about beaches, piers, lost love and Calypso lollies.” That’s how this band describes themselves via their websites. Hailing from the south of England, Safari Park features members from Skitanja (who played at Incubate 2010) and who are more than happy to return to Tilburg again with their next project. The music they produce with Safari Park is best described as noise-influenced indie pop.

‘Brasslands is a feature documentary film currently in post-production shot in New York City and Guča, Serbia, at the 50th anniversary of the world’s largest brass music festival. Brasslands follows the members of Zlatne Uste, an unlikely New York Balkan brass band as they travel to Guča to represent the United States in the first ever competition for international bands. Once in Guča, we meet some of our other main characters, including Dejan Petrovic and Demiran Ćerimović, virtuosic trumpeters and former Guča champions.’

For the first time, Incubate will, by popular demand, offer accommodation facilities. Information regarding these accommodations will be announced at the website www.incubate.org. Hydra Decapita (UK) – TBA

Director: The Otolith Group

Drexciya was a mysterious but highly influential techno group from Detroit, formed by James Stinson who passed away in 2002, although he worked together with Gerald Donald (Dopplereffekt) as well. Hydra Decapita by The Otolith Group, is a movie based around the myth of Drexciya and their concept recordings that imagined a fictional world system entitled Drexciya. This imagines a world populated by the subaquatic descendants of Africans, drowned by slavers during the Middle Passage. We’re just as curious as you about this movie, as there are only stills on their website for now. When (trailer) footage of this movie will become available, we’ll let you know on the website and blog!

Aura Noir (NOR) – 15/9

Some legendary Norwegian black metal right here! But Aura Noir’s music is in no way connected with other Norwegian black nowadays. No, this three piece takes us back to the very earliest days of black metal when Venom, Slayer, Motörhead, Voivod and Bathory records were the main inspiration, played in dark and obscure basements. Raspy and raw black with a thrashy punk vibe like the later Darkthrone albums is what Aura Noir is all about! Time to get your spike belts on, this one’s for the headbangers!

Ketzer (GER) – 15/9

Some of you might have seen this band in Little Devil a while ago already, yet Germany’s Ketzer is preparing to unleash some more doom and Armageddon over Tilburg at Incubate 2011! Taking the heavy metal basics from bands like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and of course Slayer mixed with the black metal of Deströyer 666, Ketzer manufactures their own brand of blackened thrash metal. Kind of like Watain partying together with Sodom while playing some Darkthrone covers!

Heretic (NL) – 15/9

Straight from Best (Noord-Brabant) comes Heretic, a long lasting black ‘n roll tank. Storming the underground since 1995, they evolved from a typical black metal band to a more rock ‘n roll influenced band. While still keeping the faith in satan alive, Heretic adds some sleazy Motörhead riffs to their music. They’ve not surprisingly been support for The Devil’s Blood quite a few times! The opening of their song ‘My Chainsaw’ describes it all; “My rock ‘n roll more not to entertain, but to annihilate!”

Burning Yellows (US) – 17/9

Emerging from the Portland DIY scene, Burning Yellows might as well soon be the next thing within the lo-fi pop scene! With a spacey, even a little hazy production, Burning Yellows adds a truckload of echo sounds effects to singer Kyja’s vocals, backed with psychedelic, atmospheric pop songs. By sometimes even exploring dreamy shoegaze territories, they come closest to Dum Dum Girls or Vivian Girls with the reverb channel on full!

Planks (DE) – 17/9

Tags: hardcore, sludge

Planks’ title of their lastest album The Darkest of Grays is one that suits them very well. On the one side the bleak crusty hardcore sound of His Hero Is Gone with on the other side a more dynamic mix of old-Isis and Mastodon and with an occasional wave of black metal blasts. With this, you can assume a grey blend of killer guitar riffs, a core approach to their drumming like Tombs and lyrical content about waters, especially the deepest corners of the oceans. But even about Moby Dick!

Le Syndicat (FR) – 17/9

Tags: noise, industrial

Although their creepy music is the ultimate soundtrack for crapping your pants, the legendary collective Le Syndicate that formed back in 1982 never promoted nihilism or violence, unlike other noise acts. Their use of TV and city noises layered with (amen) breaks, spoken word and industrial noise sample trades with people like Merzbow, led to an incredible circulation of their music within the early-noise tape trading scene. Monachus (SE) – 17/9

From the ashes of the Swedish post-metal act Icos steps up Monachus. After a potential lawsuit and some personal differences within the band, they were forced to change their name. But in advantage of the band! Monachus already secured a track on the Falling Down Compilation II alongside acts such as The Ocean, God Is An Astronaut and Kodiak (Incubate 2010) and will now release their debut in May. Anticipate some of the most glooming and droning sludge with a post-metal atmosphere, pretty much in the vein of the mighty Neurosis.

Light Bearer (UK) – 17/9

After Fall of Efrafa’s quest came to an end in 2009, singer Alex started a new project which became Light Bearer. The whole band is based around a four part story influenced by writers like Philip Pullman and John Milton, but also the book of Genesis. The project comes down like a huge wave of post-rock riffs diverged with heavy sludge influences from bands like Buried Inside and Isis. With their music, the story line and art as a great element, Light Bearer constantly hits the light switch between bleak and bright.


Wormrot (SG) – 18/9

After the grindcore beast Insect Warfare played their last shows in 2009, it was time for a new band to fill their shoes. All the way from Singapore, Wormrot is working their way up fast. This three-piece brings a truck load of short, crushing and drumkit bashing grindcore with a huge love for old thrash and punk records. With even a cover by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, these guys show a funny side as well. But above all, expect some tight as a tick, lightning fast grind.

Maruta (US) – 18/9

For some reason strange, yet maybe very obvious reason, Maruta’s drummer Nick Augusto recently left the band to play in the popular metalcore band Trivium. But don’t expect Maruta to come anywhere close to Trivium! With the addition of the ex-Nailshitter drummer and a bass player, they are now heavier than ever. Operated by insane, technical riffs and blastbeats at breakneck speed, Maruta produces pulverizing grind with elements of doom, power violence and death metal. Not for the soft hearted among us!

The Queers (US) – 18/9

Keeping the Ramones vibes alive since 1982, The Queers are a long lasting American punk. Despite many member changes except for singer/guitarist Joe Queer, The Queers have always been about catchy, sing-a-long friendly pop punk. Of course with lyrical themes that include girls, alcohol and most of all, party! Don’t look surprised if you hear covers from some of their main influences such as The Beach Boys, Ramones or The Undertones as well. What to expect live? ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR!

Pariso (UK) – 18/9

Clean your throats, grab your favorite hardcore t-shirt out of your closet and put some plasters in your  trousers pocket. This night, you’ll experience some of the finest hardcore tunes of the moment. Pariso, previously known as Betty Pariso, comes right out of the Throats, Rolo Tomassi and Trash Talk scene and if you like those bands, this will be the thing you don’t want to miss. The moshpit is yours. Use it.

Kerouac (UK) – 18/9

‘I Owe Some People The World But I Owe You Shit’ is just one of the great songs Kerouac wrote. The band from the southern parts of England makes hardcore with an intense sweet heavy bass groove. If you’ve seen bands like Misery Signals, run,WALK! or Hang The Bastard at Incubate, take a listen to these guys. You won’t regret. We owe you Kerouac and that ain’t shit.

This week we announce the following names: Celeste, The Kids and Yukon Blonde.

Celeste (FR) – 17/9

The nihilistic French band Celeste will probably hate most of you for being part of the evil in this world they call mankind, but will surely be thankful if you visit their show. Celeste melts some of France’s finest, besides cheese and baguettes, into their music. A bit of screamo chaos from Amanda Woodward or Aussitôt Mord, blended with the post-metal of Year of No Light and with a (post-) black metal undertone. Somewhat droning and atmospheric, but brutally heavy at the same time. If Envy, Neurosis and Converge would make love (or hate in this case), Celeste would be their deranged child. Playing in a small, dark venue with the minimal use of lights and some intense visuals suits their blackest and bleakest nihilistic music the best. And they certainly will do so!


The Kids (BE) – 18/9

“We play better. We don’t spit on the public anymore, now we try to amuse them” says frontman Ludo Mariman of The Kids about their reunion in 1996, but things were different before. The Belgian band The Kids were one of the first international punk rock acts back in 1976 after the big punk movement from the United Kingdom. They are seen the answer to the Ramones, The Damned and Sex Pistols mixed with the rock ‘n roll sounds of Lou Reed. The Kids took their name pretty literarily as some of the band members were still underage at that time. But they soon found their own sound and were playing own songs instead of filling ¾ of their set with Ramones covers. Songs like ‘Fascist Cops’ may not be as offending anymore as they were in 1978, but after their reunion in 1996, they are still just as catchy! The Kids will make you scream your lungs out like the old punk days!


Yukon Blonde (CA) – 12/9

Describing Yukon Blonde is actually pretty easy unlike some other acts here at the festival. Which of course is not a bad thing! With just a few keywords, you know the catch; poppy, accessible, catchy but above all, highly addicting. This Canadian three-piece, although occasionally inviting live guests, make straight forward, extremely catchy indie pop music by mixing the old (Fleetwood Mac) with the new (Fleet Foxes). Summer vibes all over! After successful tours, as well as a performance at SXSW last year, Europe is up next! If you can’t seem to get into Yukon Blonde and not singing along after a few listens, you’re doing something terribly wrong!

Even though they have suffed from the same loss as we did with the cancellation of Lil B, Kraak Festival 2011 (taking place in Aalst, Belgium) still carries on with an impressive line-up! Met ingang van 1 april 2011, maar het liefst eerder, zoekt Incubate een nieuw Hoofd Marketing en PR (m/v) op freelance basis. Incubate kent een festivaldynamiek. I got introduced to Glasgow-based producer Tom Marshallsay aka Dam Mantle in February, a few weeks before the release of his Grey EP. If you have any love for fresh beats, this piece hit you hard. With cut-up strings, bells, 8-bits-beeps, haunting vocals, retro synths, claps and woodblocks he made the soundtrack to a black version of Alice in Wonderland. Where glitch, hip-hop and witch house meet you’ll find Dam Mantle. And just when you thought it couldn’t get any more fresh he released his Purple Arrow EP. Opening with the mind blowing experience called Theatre he actually hides a bit and moves towards more introvert productions. Yes, at this moment, with Dam Mantle the journey is more important than the destination. But you got to love both EP’s. I have no idea where he will go next and look forward to a live experience of this former Led Zeppelin coverband musician.

Bland, massive, rude, loud, sexy, vulgar, exhausting, uplifting, direct, uncompromising, pornographic fight music…that’s Sleigh Bells and you know it. You hate or love them. To me, these are future sounds from a sensual post-garagepunk utopia. The world of Sleigh Bells exists though. Me and a few other smarty pants got a sneak peek in the small hall of the Paradiso in Amsterdam. Alexis and Derek of Sleigh Bells showed us some in-ya-face/in-ya-groin craziness. Picking only the ‘useful’ elements of metal, hardcore, hiphop, noise and tweenpop to construct some base hitting pop brilliance. I’d never expected being surprised by a new Menomena record. Their three previous records were nice and solid so were their live shows. But their latest efford Mines caught me totally off guard. It opens almost like Spoon’s Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga with Queen Black Acid a song that doesn’t give you any clue on where these guys are heading. The epic Killemall does show you where Menomena is leading you: musical heaven. And with Tythe and Lunchmeat it’s clear: singer Brent Knopf is on a mission. Combining fresh compositions and true musicality with asphyxiating words of surrealistic threats and the demise of all that’s worth living for.

Glitchfolk, melancholic electropop and dubby loveanthems, together they should characterise Baths’ album Cerulean. Twenty-one-year-old (!) LA based Will Wiesenfeld was introduced to the glitchscene by Daedalus and opened for him and the likes of Flying Lotus and Nosaj Thing. His childlike approach to the few dogma’s are combined with a contrasting nostalgia of an old soul. Baths’ song ♥ could well be one of the best songs of 2010. Almost like a a twenty-first century All I Need (by French producers Air) it grabs you while still experimenting with fades of piano and pinchy glitchcuts.

Don’t become hesitant because of the generic descriptions of his style. Using only sounds and ideas from kuduro , grime, glitch or Baltimore beat, and making them his own, Girl Unit is not just another kid with no direction. On both releases Girl Unit uses the typically hiphoppy 808 snare fills, horns, deep pounding bases, howling vocals and trancy synths. Never knowing where the song takes you, always trusting the end result. Apparently dj’s were jacking clips from online mixes therefor his label (Night Slugs) pushed up the release of his newest joint Wut.

Le Guess Who?. One of the coolest festivals in the Netherlands is about to happen from 24 ’till 28 November! Utrecht will be the best place in the country to hear the nicest music these five days. On Inlog.org, Erik Zwennes will give you some must-see tips. Erik writes for 3VOOR12, VPRO Gids, State Magazine and is the producer/editor of the monthly Hollandse Nieuwe sampler on VPRO’s Luisterpaal. With three frenetic and uncompromising records in three years Ty Segall is well on is way to becoming my personal garagerock hero. Combining lo-fi production techniques with characteristic skills and outstanding songwriting, this American punk artist rose above the crowd. A crowd of great bands inspired by Oblivians, Jay Reatard or The Gories. But Segall adds his own special recipe of haunting hooks, demanding diction and humor. Incubate is een grootschalig festival voor independent culture. Het festival heeft een breed programma met muziek, beeldende kunst, debat, theater en film. Meer dan 200 culturele voorlopers presenteren zich in een intieme context aan een internationaal publiek. Black metal naast free jazz. Verfrissende kunst naast inspirerend debat. Incubate vind jaarlijks plaats in de derde week van september in Tilburg en omgeving. Van café tot natuurtheater. Van popzaal tot museum. Deze stageplek geeft je een kijkje in keuken van Incubate en specifiek in de programmering en artistieke keuzes van het festival, maar ook de kans in te stappen in het uitgebreide netwerk wat Incubate al heeft, alsmede dat netwerk uit te breiden.

Beeldende kunst en film zijn belangrijke disciplines binnen het festival. In het verleden werkten we onder meer met mensen als Hermann Nitsch, Ryan Trecartin, Martijn Hendriks, Erik Smith, Peter Beste, Marc Bijl en Franko B. Tevens is er samenwerking met clubs en locaties als Whatspace, Filmmuseum, WORM, de Pont, Filmfoyer en talloze andere locaties in Tilburg.

Functieomschrijving:
Je hebt contact met en bent aanspreekpunt voor zowel de organisatie als de partners binnen verschillende projecten tijdens Incubate. Je denkt mee over invulling, uitvoering, publiciteit en marketing van het project en bent verantwoordelijk voor de praktische voltooiing van de projecten.

Functievereisten:
-       Zelfstandig opererend
-       Enige ervaring met produceren in de creatieve sector
-       Affiniteit met Incubate en haar visie
-       Affiniteit met en kennis van de stad Tilburg
-       Aantoonbare affiniteit met beeldende kunst
-       Flexibiliteit
- Eerste jaar ongeveer 1 dag per week beschikbaar

Incubate bied het volgende aan:
-      Het betreft hier een ONBETAALDE functie, zeker het eerste jaar. Het is voor ons belangrijk hier heel duidelijk over te zijn. Jouw eigen idee over wat voor rol beeldende kunst en film speelt binnen Incubate moet de voornaamste drijfveer zijn.
-       Uitdagend traject met professionele groeimogelijkheden
-       Intensieve samenwerking in zowel internationale als regionale context
-       Een dynamische werkomgeving

We zoeken iemand die per direct beschikbaar is, in ieder geval tot en met Incubate 2011 / Oktober 2011. Vanwege de samenstelling van het team gaat er een lichte voorkeur uit naar een vrouwelijke medewerker.
