Kindness – World, You Need A Change Of Mind

The man behind Kindness, Adam Bainbridge, surprised us two years ago with a cover from The Replacements‘ Swingin’ Party. Now Adam finally released a full debut album with swinging funky tunes, calling memories of the 80s. With a little help from Philippe Zdar, one of the guys of Cassius and producer of the last album from The Rapture and Phoenix, bringing neo-disco as one the first ones out of London instead on NYC.

THEESatisfaction - awE naturalE

One of the most remarkable albums of last year was Black Up from Shabazz Palaces; Two hiphoppers who had a completely other approach on hiphop and mixed it with avant-garde and irregular beats. On their last song Swerve… the backing vocals were done by Stasia Irons & Catherine Harris-White aka THEESatisfaction. Now it’s the girls turn, with a little help from Shabazz Palaces (on the track Enchantruss) and record label Sub Pop (who released Black Up, but of course also known from acts as Fleet Foxes and The Shins). Where the guys of Shabazz Palaces took the hiphop into avant-garde, THEESatisfaction takes the (neo-)soul into avant-garde. Something it sounds a bit like the futuristic soul/r’n'b of Janelle Monae, but most of the time it sounds.. something like you never heard before.

Mac DeMarco -  Rock & Roll Night Club

Our friends from Kicking The Habit already posted a couple of times about this man, Mac DeMarco and now, finally his debut album Rock & Roll Night Club is on Spotify. He sounds like a modern version of Lou Reed or David Bowie living in the 21st century. DeMarco combines the lo-fi sound with crooner vocals backed by cheap guitars. It’s weird to say, but the music is.. addicting.
Sounds like: The son of Lou Reed and David Bowie.

Breton – Other People’s Problems 

The art collective BretonLABS is working in an old bank building in London. The guys are working on movies, documentaries and remixes. Now, they released under the name Breton a full album with the name Other People’s Problems. The band is mixing the Foals/Bloc Party music with the industrial London sound. When the complete album was finished the band went to the studios of Sigur Rós in Iceland just to get it some air. You’ll ear it in the recordings; the claustrophobic atmosphere is not complete gone, but it’s sounds.. more fresh.

Another EP this Spotifriday! And a special one, we can say. Beak & Claw consists of 4 tracks created by three completely different artists; folky songwriter Sufjan Stevens, rapper Serengeti and avantgarde beatmaker Son Lux. Stevens did already some weird stuff on his last album, The Age of Adz, but on this EP is taking this weirdness to another level. For instance on the openingstrack Museum Day; an auto-tune intro/chorus by Stevens, and raps by Serengeti. Pretty weird, but pretty awesome as well.
