The year is coming to an end but we’ve got some surprises left in store for you! In the upcoming weeks, starting today, we’ll be posting the sets of our Global Mashups. For the project ‘Generation Bass presents Global Mashups vol.1‘ we at Incubate brought together vocalists and producers from non-Western countries and had them work with upcoming stars from Western dance genres like dubstep, skweee and tropical house whom they never met.

The second set of the Global Mashups is Hope Masike vs. Process Rebel. Hope Masike is a rising star in Zimbabwe and she is mixing traditional Zimbabwean music with jazz, blues and reggae. Opposite Hope Masike is Process Rebel, an American DJ spinning some very dubstep like reggae. They rehearsed together during the day, before entering the stage at night. The following mashups will be up and running on our blog and on Generation Bass in the next weeks:

STEVE RUTTA / X PLASTAZ (Tanzania) vs RANDY BARRACUDA (Finland)
FELLOW (Aruba) vs ELGATO (uk)
MENEO (Guatemala) vs BERTONBEATS (est)
DJ QUIEN (Bolivia) vs FLECK (Greece)
MUTHONI (Kenya) vs SILKIE (uk)
HOPE MASIKE (Zimbabwe) vs PROCESS REBEL (usa)

This project was supported by Hivos.

Generation Bass have given Moombahton DJs (and the remixes they made) a name and the scene is growing bigger and bigger. Now they’ve made a 2 CD compilation, with the newest wave of Moombahton! The compilation is logically called ‘The New Wave of Moombahton Vol. 1‘ and you can listen to it for free on Mixmag!

‘Generation Bass’ New Wave Of Moombahton – two fistfuls of potential, vigour, imagination and youthful energy, amply justifying and repaying the faith the old heads have shown. Over 30 tracks, these young bucks forcibly smash down the door to Moombahton’s future: from Paul David’s big-room, progressive mechanics to Noms’ classical-inspired banger via Modabot’s deep Latin hues, the New Wave proves that haters are going to need to be on their game like never before.’

Bandish Project is back with an awesome collaboration with the up and coming female artist Shaai’r. They have made the song ‘Lover‘ and it’s fueled with basses and the enthralling voice of Shaai’r. ’Lover’ is Monica Dogra‘s ideas of what her lover should be and the tentative stages of any new romance. In 2009 Bandish Project began working on the concept of ‘Lover’.

Shaai’r is Monica Dogra and she is a bona fide Bollywood star. They flew Dogra in for a two-day stay to film the video clip at the hot new venue ‘England Music Café”. Dogra spend two days dancing and taking direction to articulate the song through motions. The video clip of ‘Lover’ and the original track plus the remixes can be viewed and listened to below and on Generation Bass.

Today we will start with the set of Steve Rutta vs. Randy Barracuda, a great collabortation. Meet the skweee sound of Randy Barracuda mixed up with the Masaai sounds of Steve Rutta.

DJ QUIEN (Bolivia) vs FLECK (Greece)
MUTHONI (Kenya) vs SILKIE (uk)
HOPE MASIKE (Zimbabwe) vs PROCESS REBEL (usa)

This project was supported by Hivos.

Lord Cry Cry is adventurous and that you can certainly hear on his debut album ‘Lord Cry Cry’, out now on Generation Bass. A 9-track album with all kinds of different genres from blues to dubstep to burlesque to surfstep to Tom Waits to experimental. A wide range of diversity we must say, but it’s perfectly mixed. You can think of it like this, ‘A debut album where jazz, blues and classic film soundtracks have found common ground with dubstep and electronica.’

The man behind Lord Cry Cry is Berlin-based producer and composer Christopher Donaghue. ‘A genre-gliding musician and film-score composer trained in the psychology of music and music composition, his work is able to use music and rhythm to affect emotion’. Lord Cry Cry has been making a name since 2009 where he first caught the attention with his debut single, OneStepTwo, of UK independent label Blunt Force Trauma. He played several music festivals around the world and caught the attention of Joe Ransom, he put is experimental journey in this debut album, Lord Cry Cry. Enjoy!

Generation Bass is one of these blogs that keep putting out great releases with their ‘Transnational Dubstep’ series. And they are also looking for the newest sounds in dancemusic.
Moombahton is developing every day and we’re starting to really dig the funky dub beats. Moombahluv for example. A mix between Moombahton, soul and r’n'b, results in a laidback version of this originally pumping music. We posted about the first Moombahluv mixtape earlier, now the second one is out and can be downloaded for free by clicking here.

Shazalakazoo

If this is too smooth for your taste, we have something for you as well. Shazalakazoo is a band from Belgrade (Serbia) formed by Milan Djuric and Uros Petkovic. The band plays danceable electronic bass music spiced with the sounds originating mostly from their own region – the Balkans. And now for their new EP, they’ve intertwined their sound with the characteristics of Moombahton. The result sounds like you expect. But better. You can buy the ‘Bang! And now ladies and gentlemen, his original album is thrown in the remix by different artists.

‘Antenna Of Tallinn Remixed’ is the name of the album. It consists of fourteen remixes in a wide ranges of styles by friends and inspirators. But who remixed it? Artists like Munchi, Daniel Haaksman, Flore, Diamons Bass or Big Dope P and even upcoming artists got the opportunity to remix his songs, Julius Sylvest, Max Le Daron or Woz. These are some nice tunes for the weekend, put them on and the party is definitely on!

Dj UMB made a new mix for the generation bass website for free! It’s called ‘Make MoombahLuV Not War <3′. He wanted to put a compilation together with the subtle sounds of Moombahton. Thereby letting everybody see the diversity of the genre. Meaning of diversity that Moombahton is not only for clubs, but also to play at home or in your car, when you’re feeling down, in love or heartbroken and in the mood for romance.

The concept of the mix tape is ‘Luv’ but more the ‘angst’ & ‘matters of the heart’ in mind then the love-making type of love. This is the reason Dj UMB gives us: ‘Luv is what keeps us going, it’s what makes the world go around, as clichéd as that might sound, but I believe it to be true. Well, that’s just the way I see the world! ONE LUV’.

Generation Bass also gives you the opportunity to send in your own moombahton tunes over at their website. All because of this Moombahton remix, they surely do send allot of love to their fans! Here you can download the mix for free: Make Moombahton LuV Not War <3

One of the top Moombahton journalists, Neil Queen Jones, gives a track-by-track synopsis plus a foreword:

Generation bass presents Moombahluv Volume One

You should never ask what Moombahton is, it’ll only be something new tomorrow. Moombahton is more than just a global bass genre, it’s a wide-eyed, infectious field project in EDM mechanics that relishes discovery. Dave Nada’s creation bears the bruises that come from repeatedly butting up against any limitation it comes up against: the tough bass rumble of moombahcore galvanised it, then moombahsoul proved that something deeper lurked beneath the playful exterior -and now Moombahluv Volume One shows what this thing is capable of – over 17 track, Moombahluv points the way forward.

1. Home – Phi Unit

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes’ hypnotic, lilting anthem gets taken from the campfire to last-track-of-the-night, sun-rising status with this judicious workout. This is how uplifting needs to be done.

2. None Of Dem (Th0r remix) – Royksopp & Robyn

One of Moombahton’s strength is that it doesn’t seek to reinvent the wheel, it just happens to own a new set of tyres. Th0r’s exquisite repurposing of this slice of Scandinavian class pushes it jet-heeled towards the 108bpm dancefloor, without compromising the original’s potency.

3. Mouthful Of Diamonds (DJ 4Head edit) – Phantogram

When Dave Nada pitched down Dutch house, who knew it would’ve ended up here? Wistfully indie female vocals and guitar riffs are the latest components to be assimilated by the global bass hybrid – proving once again that Moombahton is a sound that confounds expectation.

4. Bob James – El Nomada

The breaks legend gets a serious mid-tempo global retread from El Nomada. This one’s perfect for kicking back and savouring the good life; a gentle bossanova is tweaked to form the distinctive Moombahton beat, flute lazily marks time and the percussion irons out any rough edges. Wonderful.

5. Everything She Wants (Thomas Blondet edit) – Wham!

This could so easily have gone badly wrong, yet now seems so logically right. At the hands of the glacially cool Blondet, George Michael’s finest moment gets the perfect Moombahton rub-down, retooled and ready for a liberated, hipster-allergic dancefloor. Effortlessly suave.

6. Another Girl (Kan Takahiko edit) – Jacques Greene

Pure tranquil bliss. Japanese producer Takahiko gives the highly rated Montreal producer Greene, a serious make over here with a sumptuous edit, one that shows that Moombahton is now comfortable in its skin. Stripped of excess, Another Girl allows the dembow to work in perfect unison with the music, building into a balaeric wonder.

7. 93 Til’ Moombah – Cabo Blanco

Moving quickly to shoot down the notion that a woman’s role in Moombahton necessitates a bikini, this dreamy serving of moombahsoul interlaces the beautiful female vocal with the wide-open expanse of the production to heavenly effect.

8. Sliding Scale – Doc Adam

Doc reins in his trademark jackhammer beats, this time tooling up with lavish strings and Q-Tip samples, yet his tight, gristle-free production style remains uncompromised. Sliding Scale proves that Doc Adam is not only of the OGs who commands respect, but one who’ll form part of Moombahton’s future, too.

9. Suave – Freaky Phillip

The tropical beats are in full working order here, as Freaky Phillip reps the Dominican Republic, stripping Moombahton down to its constituents; the dembow crunch, the Dirty Dutch riffs, the euphoric lifts – and sends them floating into deep space.

10. A Change – Elonious

Lasers and social revolution combine to devastating effect in this effort from Generation Bass’ own Elonious. Scathing Moombahcore hooks vie with old-school electro jabs in a battle for supremacy – but the listener is the winner, irrespective of the outcome.

11. Amor De Angeles – Arehouse

Monica getting a reverse screw may sound like an unfortunate turn of events, but in reality it’s Arehouse effortlessly proving that pitching up to 108bpm need not mean sacrificing any of the grace, soul or subtlety – in fact, this R&B number sounds as slick as ever.

12. What Have You Done – DJ Dice

This upbeat, minimal affair from DJ Dice effortlessly and purposefully steams into full flight, teasing a playfully childlike riff into an unlikely big room soundsystem scenario, proving again that moombahton is always full of surprises and curious intent.

13. Ya Ghali (Mendez edit) – Guitarra Band

The mutual global cosign continues, with this latin creation from the El Cuco stable reaching out east for a rare “Bellyton” joint. Mendez is a producer who matches a breadth of vision with well-drilled production chops, as this tight, hypnotic edit proves.

14. In The Zone (Boyfriend edit) – The Weeknd

The Weeknd plus Moombahton may seem like the result of a hipster focus group, but with Lithuanian producer Boyfriend’s ear for brooding melody, cavernous soundscapes and unanswerable beats applied to Abel Tesfaye’s plaintive urban love letters, any such argument is instantly proved pointless.

15. Goshen (Smash & Grab edit) – Beirut

This glorious edit shows how Moombahton is capable of more than throwing out bangers, it can also handle nuance, grace and sensitivity, as Smash & Grab show that melody and acoustics have no need to fear the dembow.

16. Caboclo – Frankie Grimes

While producers were trying to pick up the pieces in the wake of Munchi’s Firepower, Ireland-based Frankie took his own path, seeking out a more soulfully expressive sound. Caboclo shows where he ended up – in a refined and beautiful place.

17. Crawl – Stlkrfxxx

Love can come in many forms, and in the case of David Beltran, the other person doesn’t always need to know too much about it. Dragging witch house down to 108 level, this Moombahton taken to dark and exciting places.

Schlachthofbronx were at the Incubate festival two years ago, bringing their Munich sounds to Tilburg. The duo Benedikt and Jacob released their second EP and it won’t let you sit still. The EP is released on Man Recordings and it includes four brand new songs full with basses you can bounce to. The EP is called ‘Carimbo’ and represents the next level bass music. It even has Gnucci Banana on it (on the track ‘Coolie Fruit’). ‘Carimbo’ has a bounce rhythm, with an irrestible melody including sounds of Northern Brasil. The songs all have an uptempo beat, with booty shaking rhythms and allot of bass.

Hi there! This is Incu Thursday. Every Thursday, 14:00h local time, we announce the musicians that were confirmed for the Incubate 2011 festival during the past week. Whether it’s one or twenty names, as long as we have things to confirm…

Ticket sales are up and running well now. So head over here for your passepartouts or day tickets!

Remember we have a campsite for the first time this year as well! Busses will carry you between the campsite and the city centre. You can buy your camping tickets through the Incubate ticket shop.

We’re excited to announce Generation Bass‘ participation with the Monsters of Moombahton, including David Heartbreak, Munchi and DJ Umb. Besides that one-man band The Show Is The Rainbow will play at Incubate 2011 and last name for the Trigga line-up in Midi Theater Café is Horst aan de Massive.

We have also announced The Magus and Lazarov to the film program as well as Fanni Futterknecht – I Almost Love You to the dance program.

Looking for a decent lunch on Saturday? Between 13:00 – 15:00h at De Heuvel we have Eat-In, which you can read all about below. Also we have added the third edition of New Jacks, featuring five young artists who will show their work during Incubate 2011.

In his dj-sets you’ll find a mix of hip hop, reggae, dancehall, moombahton, kuduro, dutch house, baile funk and the self-started moombahsoul subgenre.

Newly added to the Dance Program:

Fanni Futterknecht – I Almost Love You
Expand to view more info

What is left to relate to when layers of re/presentation are internalized to a constituent level? Prepared with naivety and a microphone Fanni Futterknecht’s character re-measures the performative playground for the ‘acting out’ of affection. On a sugary glaze of installed artificialness, tableau-like projections within relationships are reflecting themselves and mechanisms of objectification are getting rubbed against a subjective potency of performer and spectator. A masked performance, protected from authenticity and sentiments – almost.

Newly added projects:

New Jacks 3.o featuring Paul Geelen, Martijn van Dalen, Joost Jansen, Merel van Beukering, Tijl Orlando

Expand to view more info

New Jacks is what Incubate is all about: helping artists to hatch. With new Jacks 3.0 we have asked five young artists that recently graduated at local academies to present their autonomous view on the theme of this year: We Are Incubate. Other than previous years is this exhibition not only available during the Incubate week but it will last until October 9th.

The opening of New Jacks 3.0 will take place on September 8th at BKKC with none other than Coco Bryce and Jameszoo! For more information and directions, head over to the BKKC website!

Paul Geelen

Paul Geelen is working on and organises a structure wherein personal intuition can become more universal. During New Jacks 3.0 he provokes the spectators view with a contemplative fade along boundaries of public space and private domain. Occurring between two extremes, or in the middle of that range.

Martijn van Dalen

Visual artist and theater maker Martijn van Dalen wants to stop people in their tracks and think about their lives. With humor, engagement or mystery he wants to show contradictions in what we say in relation to what we do. “I don´t want to be a preacher. And although my work pretends to be a message, it really isn´t.”

Joost Jansen

“I, Joost Jansen (1985) am crazy, colourful and creative. I trust my intuition while making fashion related inspiration and prototypes. I make unique objects and magazines and have my own clothing line.” For New Jacks 3.0 Joost will be broadcasting live from a place in Tilburg.

Merel van Beukering

Photograpy is her game. And using surrealism she’s winning it. Having studied both photography and communication & design, the work of van Beukering comes across as very clean and slightly odd, but always striking. It should come as no surprise then that she’s already won several awards for her work.

Tijl Orlando

Tijl Orlando’s work mostly comes in the form of installations. He creates an environment or changes the existing environment. In these spaces, which are strongly based on architectural phenomena, is room for smaller, more or less autonomous works which come in form of sculptures, paintings and photo’s.

Participants bring one or more homemade dish(es)

At least one of the ingrediënts is organic

Subscribe in advance

Bring your own drinks

The organic part…

Maybe sounds a bit snobbish? Not really. We’re no food-extremists, it’s no crazy hippieparty. We just love to enjoy good food. That’s why the Eat-In is cool and accessible for all kitchenprincesses, masterchefs and everything inbetween.

So bring: Applepie with apples from your grandma’s garden, salad with vegetables from the nearest organic farmer, herbs from your own garden, organic meat to prepare on the big barbecue… Everything’s possible, as long as it’s good and honest.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29:

SHANGAAN ELECTRO (za) + MAX LE DARON (be) + dj’s LEBLANC, DARCYR & SEBCAT (be/nl)
WORM @ Heidegger, Grotekerkplein 70, Rotterdam // doors+start: 20:30h // damage: 12 euro

Want to go?

All you have to do is send us your full name to win ATT incubate DOT org, with Shangaan Electro in the subject line. That’s right, all you have to do is send us your name. First come first serve!

Shangaan Electro is the street level dance phenomenon from South Africa that went global in 2010 on the back of a series of viral youtube clips and an acclaimed compilation on Honest Jon’s that introduced the movers and shakers in this fast emerging micro-genre. Shangaan Electro replaces Shangaan music’s traditional instrumentation with midi-keyboard sounds, re-pitched vocal samples and jacking four to the floor beats, then amps things up to breakneck speeds of over 180BPM. This is hyper-kinetic digital dance music custom made for weekly dance offs in Soweto, and it’s getting ever faster…

This will be the first time ever Shangaan Electro show in Holland! Based on a Soweto street party, the live show will feature the stars of the Honest Jon’s compilation – producer/mastermind and vocalist Nozinja aka ‘Dog’ and the clown-masked Tshetsha Boys among them – alongside the fastest Shangaan dancers and fast-rising kwaito/house producer and Nozinja affiliate DJ Spoko (co-producer of DJ Mujava’s ‘Township Funk’).

The Transnational Dubstep compilation released by Generation Bass received some very good feedback online. The well respected journalist Robert Christgau (NY Time, Rolling Stone, Playboy etc.) rewarded the compilation with an A-minus! Read the review and Dee Jay UMB’s reaction below:

Generation Bass Presents: Transnational Dubstep (Six Degrees)

In 1994 Wax Trax’ Ethnotechno proved a politely polyrhythmic techno reachout to straightforward international dance musics it secretly found quaint. It listened well and stuck poorly, the “ethnotechno” tag itself its main contribution to international understanding. Conceived, assigned, and sequenced by DJ Umb, the London-born son of Kashmiri exiles who promotes such all-embracing terms as “transnational bass” at his Generation Bass blog, this array of whomping exotica reflects its creator’s appetite for any Third World dance movement he can get his ears on, including such new ones on me as kuduro, barefoot, and–from the mysterious depths of the District of Columbia–Moombahton! Plus, of course, the bassy evolution of techno beatmaking since 1994. Speaking as someone who will never enter a barefoot club (my doctor prescribed those orthotics, dammit), I hereby extend my thanks to whoever invented that shuddering synth low end that turns background music into foreground fun without requiring you to kiss your ass goodbye. And I also testify that not a damn thing here sounds quaint. Which is to make no predictions as to how any of them will sound 17 years from now. A MINUS

Dee Jay Umb’s reaction on Facebook about it:

“We just got an A minus for the Transnational Dubstep compilation from the highly esteemed and respected journalist Robert Christgau – self-proclaimed “Dean of American Rock Critics” who has written for The Village Voice, The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Playboy. Spin, Creem, etc etc…it’s bit like getting a 1st Class Honours Degree, it’s official we are GEEKS..lol..”

Promo Festival Mundial 2011

At the “Here Be Dragons” stage Incubate chooses for a couple of bands that combine their own cultural roots with global DIY culture. A new version of what was previously known as world music, in which the methods and aesthetics of punk and hardcore genres play an important role. The Kumbia Queers are an openly lesbian band from Argentina and Mexico. They describe their style as “tropical punk” in which the tropical elements, including the Latin American cumbia dancing are more on the foreground than punk. Their lyrics openly deal with the issue of homosexuality, are very cheeky, witty and sometimes provocative, especially to Latin America, where the machismo is much more deeply rooted.

DJ Uproot Andy

At the Generation Bass afterparty in Paradox we bring you DJ Uproot Andy, a New Yorker at heart who was already devoted to South American and tropical music at a very young age. On blogs as DuttyArtz and Ghetto Bass Quake he bombarded the world with music that nobody could stand still to. He also released records on labels like Bersa Discos and ZZK, the two leading nueva cumbia labels in the world. The Incubate affiliated blog Generation Bass reached 2 million visitors this year and seems unstoppable. With the album “Transnational Dubstep” it puts international dubstep artists from India, South America and the Middle East on the map. During the afterparty, the Generation Bass DJs will also spin the night away with modern genres like moombahton, nueva cumbia, dancehall and more.

Festival Mundial takes place in the Leijpark on the Southern Ringway (Ringbaan Zuid) in Tilburg. The Generation Bass afterparty will be held at Paradox, Tilburg from 23:00h and entrance will be free!

Generation Bass hit the 2 million visitor landmark! To celebrate this fact they put together a free compilation which you can download by clicking the links after the break below. Because there where so much tracks coming in, they decided to cut it up into 3 different volumes. This is the third and last edition, check out volume 1 here, and volume 2 here. Congratulations once again to the fine people at Generation Bass!

From the Generation Bass blog:

“So here it is, the Third Part, Volume III, the Third in the Trilogy, The Finale!

Godfather III was crap but this ain’t! This is, possibly, my personal favourite of the 3.

Some xclusives here from Sabo, The Peronists, Max Le Daron, Knowa Knowone, Arctor, Son of Kick, AlexisK and Herr Muller. Plus of course there’s some great tracks from others.

Thanks to everybody once again for supporting us, supporting these releases and to all the artists who were kind enough to participate in this most enjoyable trilogy!

Not quite sure if I’ll still be around for 3 million, as my priorities are changing, but hats off to everyone who has been involved in this unforgettable journey.“

Generation Bass hit the 2 million visitor landmark! To celebrate this fact they put together a free compilation which you can download by clicking the links after the break below. Because there were so much tracks coming in, they decided to cut it up into 3 different volumes. So be on the look out for more free bass-filled compilations in the next 2 days!

From the Generation Bass blog:

“So in 2 years we have managed to reach this amazing feat of now having over 2 million people visit our blog! Boy, we have always felt that the stats on our site have played some kind of mind-game with us and that we were in someway, being led on, or tricked. We have checked and cross-checked and man there ain’t no tricks nor mind games, it’s actually fact!

So what does it all mean? Well to us it just means that, at the very least, we must be doing something right. We are shown lots of <3 and a lil’ bit of hate too from time to time but that’s the nature of the beast. Success, however, you wish to define it, breeds contempt and some hatred. No escaping that I’m afraid.

We are thankful for all of the <3 and it keeps us going, knowing that so many of you appreciate it.”

I’ve seen the term djent floating around on the internet a lot lately as bands like Periphery, Tesseract and Animals as Leaders are some of the rising stars within the metalcore genre, but have a bit of a twist. They blend the mathematics of The Dillinger Escape Plan with the guitar and bass sounds of bands like Meshuggah (seen as the pioneers from this sound) and Cynic. This sound is often promoted with the term “djent”. But now a new genre emerged called Djentstep, mixing this djent sound with modern dubstep. The French artist The Algorithm is seen as the first one to mix these genres and it sounds pretty cool.

You can check out the track ‘Isometry’ underneath here or download both of his free demo’s here and here. There’s more of his music up on his Soundcloud. We’d love yo hear your thoughts on this new blend of genres! Let us know if you know any other acts or have opinions on this.

The Artist in the World is a website from André Smits where he photographs artists in their workspaces. He shoots them from a rear view, illustrating a moment of reflection, but also symbolizing the loneliness of the artist profession. Our own Vincent Koreman (Generation Bass) is featured in the Incubate HQ, as seen on the picture above. Other Tilburg residents on the site include Jeroen Doorenweerd and Koen Delaere. The Incubate HQ, as well as other locations in Tilburg like Luycks Gallery and Gallerie Kokon are also featured on the site.
