Last Wednesday, Throbbing Gristle member Peter Christopherson has died in his sleep at the age of 55. Last year, Christopherson visited Incubate to see the performance of Hermann Nitsch. A month ago, Throbbing Gristle announced to continue under the name  X-TG as Genesis P-Orridge left the band. Peter also played in bands like Psychic TV and Coil. Some of the very last photos of Peter Chrisopherson with his band X-TG can be found on the Flickr website of Chris Carter.

We had Nitsch and his pig. We named him Thor. Kabouter Wesley’s always up to date and this cartoon is about the Nitsch pig, we think. Sorry it’s in Dutch, but must be fun if you don’t understand anyway. Enjoy!

Hermann Nitsch coming to Tilburg was the talk of the month September over here in Tilburg. Here a couple of opinions by the hardworking men and women of our city, in Dutch, about Art, pigs, and the joining of those two.

Here you can see a nice item on Dutch national television about Hermann Nitsch and the Incubate festival.

It deals with the question wheter or not it is Art, what Hermann Nitsch does.

By now the artist stream flooding into Tilburg is getting enormous! What do you need to see? Everything! That’s right: it’s all worth it.

Just surprise yourself, don’t see only the things you already know.

Jandek, Misery Signals, Kayo Dot, Mad Professor, Tryee Cooper, Altaar, Jessica Bailiff, Shackleton, AU, Schlachthofbronx, Kraaklink, New Jacks, are of course a couple of the more familiar names today.

Two words will be uttered a lot today: Wardruna and Aktion.

Wardruna is a special folk project Einar ‘Kvitrafn’ Selvik (Jotunspor and ex-Gorgoroth). Wardruna creates ritualistic folk music with traditional instruments such as antlers and wooden logs, inspired by old runes. Fire, water, stones, and branches are use as well. The musical atmosphere that reminds one of an old pagan ritual site complete with trees, fires and druids, will become reality during Incubate as they will perform in an Amphitheater. With the mighty Gaahl of God Seed (also ex-Gorgoroth) on vocals.

Hermann Nitsch‘s Action is the most talked about Incubate happening this year.

Blood. Horror. Filth. Beauty? Rationality? Education? These are some of the ingredients the Austrian artist Hermann Nitsch uses and some of the questions his work raises. Highly controversial for some, highly regarded by others; Nitsch is someone you need to have an opinion on. Not to have one is not possible once you’ve seen the work by one of the instigators of performance art.

Nitsch is not a butcher, he’s an artist.

Hermann Nitsch, a man who inspires many artists in my genre of arts, the world of experimental music, is visiting Tilburg and you can’t miss it: the coverage in the media is bigger than ever, but where is it about? Pigs? Meat? Animal rights? Come on! I will not get into that whole debate, i prefer to see myself as someone who thinks without borders instead of of someone who’s shouting things which we all know are bullocks (a.o. Smolders/Graus).

Instead I would like to talk about arts, like I said, over the last years of touring I saw many artists perform who are inspired by him, not only by his music, but mostly by the esthetic side of his aktionen: getting back to controlled violence, intimidate the audience, open their minds for emotions which they don’t even know they have, best examples are Smell and Quim, Monopolka, Costes and in a way also Lucas Abela, who uses the auto-mutulation aspect Nitsch uses as well.

During the interview, held yesterday at theatre De NWE Vorst in Tilburg, Nitsch explained globally how he got to where he is now, both in life and work. He talked about his idea behind the gesamptkunstwerk, the influences both Joseph Beuys and Jackson Pollock have/had on his paintings and about how you can use actors as true, honest (and not acting) individuals during a performance. The links he made to psychology (a.o. Freud’s taboo on incest) and the Catholic Mass as a ritual, were not really a surprise. Personally I would have loved to hear him talk more about his view on Sadism and the book Venus im Pelz by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, which has obvious links to his work, but like a lot of people, I was too afraid to ask.

Nowadays Nitsch is an old man, drinking goes slower, talking goes slower and after an hour you felt he had enough of it, but maybe it was also the setting. The questions by Henk Oosterling, a Rotterdam philosopher, were not bad, but sometimes they were a bit to vague or distracting to my taste, just cut the crap and say what you want to say. Also the translation was a difficult thing, it got the speed out of the interview, which was a pity: we could have heard more interesting information, but it’s also understandable; my german is good enough to understand Nitsch in his own language, but i can imagine that’s not the case for everybody.

All the small notes aside it was a nice evening, as a experimental musician I would have loved to hear more about his musical work, his organ performances, his Geräuschmusik, but after the commotion in the media the performance part of his work needed more attention. And now it got the serious attention it needed, let’s please get back to what its really about: Art, with a capital A.

‘Views in Process’ takes a look behind the superficiality of clichés and stereotypes in the media’s presentation of the body. Doris Stelzer has a fascination for movement and how we think about ourselves and others. In ‘Views in Process’ this is combined in a show that does embody a lot of movement that you do not necessarily have to call dancing. In this way, she uses the body to critique social-political views on body images.

In the Pauluskerk on Sunday 20 there is a very impressive line-up when it comes to acoustic, instrumental and singer-songwriter music for instance neofolk by :Of the Wand & the Moon:, Cam Deas (who happens to be a BIG fan of the work of Hermann Nitsch), James Blackshaw, Jozef van Wissem and also the christian singer-songwriter Kim Janssen.

Suddenly we get a lot of media attention and reactions because Hermann Nitsch (See never before seen videos here) will perform on Incubate.

It seems that a couple of animalright activists have pressed charges against Incubate because of the Action that will take place during Incubate. The problem for them? Nitsch uses a dead pig in his performance.

A lot of (printed) media picked this up, and this stirred a lot of reactions (in Dutch).

Politicians: Smolders, a local populist politician (former driver of Pim Fortuyn) calls art “retarded” and “Nitsch a perverted and so-called artist.” The major of Tilburg said that the government should leave a lot of space to art in the city. Reminds us of the famous politician Thorbecke who is believed to have said “Art is not the business of the government.” And Dyon Graus of the PVV (you probably heard about their leader Geert Wilders) says he will do anything to stop this from happening.

A  responce with some more in-depth knowlegdge comes from Thomas Crombez, who studied philosophy and theater sciences. He published in the Brabants Dagblad the opinion that Nitsch nowadays is almost a sort of parody of ancient rituals and therefor of himself. In that same paper, but on Saturday, Gerard van Hove published an article with the title “Art should be a moral sanctuary”, wherein he defends Nitschs work.

After being graduated as a photographer in 2007, Liselotte De Groot also started with performances, vj-ing, dj-ing and performing with her two bands. This diversity of interests has a big influence on her photographic artwork. Subjects as modern pop culture and sex combined with her love for sarcasm and self-mockery, become a humorous and colorful look at the world. Besides these themes her photographs are always strongly aesthetic.

She made the Incubate/Vedett beer mats and the advertisement on the back of the Festival Guide!

She is part of the New Jacks program during Incubate and will have an exposition in Duvelhok during the festival:

De zeer brede en gevarieerde programmering zorgt eigenlijk zelden voor problemen, omdat elke bezoeker wel iets van zijn of haar gading vindt. Het zorgt ook voor een gevarieerde opkomst en dat is precies wat Incubate wil. Het festival is allang niet meer dat ‘weekendje Tilburg met punk- en metalbands’. “Af en toe wordt er wel wat kritiek geleverd op het zogenaamde verlies van onze underground status,” zegt Kimenai, “maar dat zul je altijd houden. Wij willen ons niet vastklampen aan het predikaat’ underground’, wij praten nu bewust over ‘independent culture’.”
Terugkijkend op de afgelopen vijf jaar is de organisatie vooral trots op het feit dat een aanvankelijke hobby nu is uitgegroeid tot een actieve en organische stichting die in alle richtingen blijft groeien en bloeien en in staat is om volslagen onbekende artiesten, legendarische muzikanten, beginnende componisten en gevestigde kunstenaars in één week bij elkaar te brengen.

“De Lijst Smolders heeft burgemeester en wethouders van Tilburg vragen gesteld over het Festival van het Absurde dat vanaf woensdag in Tilburg wordt gehouden. Smolders vraagt zich af wanneer het Tilburgse college nou eens ophoudt met het geven van subsidie aan dit soort ‘achterlijke en dure zogenaamde kunstprojecten’. Smolders wijst daarbij ook op het Draaiend Huis van kunstenaar John Körmeling. De partij stoort zich vooral aan de hoofdgast van het festival, de Oostenrijkse kunstenaar Hermann Nitsch. Smolders betitelt Nitsch als een perverse zogenaamde kunstenaar die volgens Smolders zijn bijnaam bloedprofessor en slager van Prinzendorf zeker eer aan doet.”

Nitsch is natuurlijk hoofdgast van Incubate en niet van Grublit. Helaas draagt Gemeente Tilburg geen cent bij aan het Nitsch-project, dat volledig extern gefinancierd werd.
