Incubate has launched the Incubate API to make all festival-data available for use in apps, websites or even art created by Incubate-minded developers. The Incubate API is an Ally API, a REST oriented JSON Web Service Interface to communicate with the Ally database. Information about artists, time schedules, venues or the latest festival news can be easily collected using the API.

Contest
Everyone who thinks he has a good idea and makes an app or a website for it using the Incubate API, gets the chance to win 500,- euros. You can participate on your own, with a team or with your business. All apps are welcome, iOS/Android/BlackBerry apps, (mobile) websites, mashups with other apps like FourSquare and Spotify; whatever you want! And if you got multiple awesome ideas, you can even submit more than one application.

There are three prizes 
1st prize: 500 euros
2nd prize: 2x Incubate festival passepartouts
3rd prize: 2x Incubate festival daytickets for a day of your choice

If you want to participate in the contest, you can submit your finished application before May 10th, 2012 12:00 PM via api@incubate.org. Please include the following info:
- Application name + description about the app and the idea
- Platform information
- URL (if website/online mashup), or installfile (if possible) for app. We’d like to test the app.
- A video of the app is a plus, but not required.
- Screenshots of your application + descriptions
- Full names of all people who created the app

All submitted apps will be published on the Incubate website on a special app page, including all necessary information and links to the app or app store. Of course you do not transfer any intellectual right to Incubate when you submit your Incubate API app. You will be responsible for submitting the app to the app store of your choice if needed, you can make your app free or charge for it.

Judging
After May 10th, 2012, a jury of employees from the Incubate and Freshheads organizations will judge the submitted apps and pick the winners. Submissions will be judged on the following criteria:
1. Quality of the idea (originality, creativity)
2. Implementation of the idea
3. Potential of your website/app; is it a good addition for Incubate fans?

Incubate is the first European festival opening up the source of their festival information for the use of applications. Incubate is constantly in search of new ways to serve the audience and this is the next step in that search. This way, Incubate wants to share data with their visitors, to create a more pleasant, more interesting and more meaningful value to visiting the festival.

The internet has changed in the last five years, and one of those changes is the importance of apps. Due to apps, websites are getting less important. Web- and software developers can build their own Incubatewebsite or -application through the Application Programming Interface (API). Information about artists, timeschedules, venues or the latest festivalnews can be easily collected. This information can be used in apps for devices like iPhone, Android or Blackberry.

Developers can create (for example) apps with a game element (Incubate quiz, guess the location, artist or newsfact) or apps that can save the visitors’ new music discoveries during the festival, with a link to Spotify. Or they can create a flirt-app or maybe an app with all the venues. These are all possible ideas, thanks to API.

That’s why Incubate is launching a competition together with internet company Freshheads. Everyone who think he has a good idea and makes an app or a website for it, gets the chance to win 500,- euros. There is a seminar on the 10th of February at Freshheads, where more information will be given and a detailled explanation about the available content of the API will be presented. More information about the competition is available at the seminar on the 10th of February and via this blog. From that day on, the applications can be submitted. Every submitted application will be shown in an overview on www.incubate.org.

Previously, Incubate made it possible for visitor to submit text, audio, video and photomaterial to the festivalwebsite www.incubate.org via a ‘wiki’ method. They also put their business and policy plans online on www.socialfestivalmodel.org, so everyone can use it.

Conference:

Yesterday was a good day at Eurosonic. I kicked off the conference with a talk about ‘Green Festival Communication’. I know, that doesn’t sound quite sexy at all, but there were two people there from ID&T/Sensation and the Melt! Festival in Germany, and I was interested in hearing what they had to say about ‘being green’ and sustainability, because I never figured those kind of festivals as being very environmentally friendly, to be honest. It was a real inspiring talk, and a lot more exciting than I’d imagine though.
ID&T started of by telling what exactly they did in terms of these topics, and a lot of great examples passed by that I’m already jealous of. For example, all the volunteers of the festival were approached if they’d like to have a fun day with like-minded people and the organization to help out doing some work in the local environment. Everything from cleaning parks to helping out at a farm, painting sheds etcetera. It sounded (and looked) like the people were having a genuinely good time. Whether they really only did it for the fun of it or for the reward, I don’t know, but I like the idea of getting people connected with the local environment in this way and showing the locals that the organization is involved in what is happening around them.

Another great example can from the Melt! Festival. They actually won an award for being one for being the most environment-friendly festival, as I understood. Besides doing cool stuff like having a train run zig-zag through Germany, straight to the festival site and where people can rent a bed to sleep during the festival, they also noticed that a lot of the time, drivers of artists are waiting for a long time at the site, until they can go to the next spot. They thought it’d be a good idea to give the drivers some driving lessons in how to reduce the usage of fuel. This was all done in a very fun way, with drivers liking the idea of having something to do and not just hanging around to getting some tips, and speaking with people about their work.

Just like myself, a lot of people tend to instantly yawn when hearing subjects like ‘being green’ and ‘sustainability’, the speakers where also aware of that and gave some good tips about communicating to the audience about these things. First off: make sure everybody internally in your organization knows what these topics mean to your organization and festival. If there’s no internal support, there won’t be external support. Second: there’s a thin line between under- and over-communication: explain to little, and people won’t understand what you’re talking about. Talk too much, people get bored. But most importantly: make it fun for people. Explain why you want to do something, and make if fun and easy for others to get involved.

After that, I had to support Incubate’s Joost of course and went to take a look at the ‘Crossmediaal programmeren’ panel. I liked to hear about the ideas of 3voor12, and the way they create and distribute media in so many ways. Overall, I think the people in the panel where pretty much in agreement of the principles in modern-day communication and content creation. Here and there, Joost tried to spice it up a little with some statements from the background of Incubate. But the basis everyone agreed upon: doing stuff like blogging, sharing audio, video, photo, etcetera: it’s not just marketing, it’s definitely not just sales. It’s telling your own story via blogs and Twitter and all about the things you’re enthusiastic about to people who might be interested in the same stuff.

After that, I went to a “drink with Hein van der Ree” from Buma/Sterma, a panel, so we are told “without political correct answers”. Right. Most of the things I heard were very political correct answers, with everybody having a beer and Hein van der Ree sipping a glass of water. A shame really, I was hoping to hear some bolder statements instead ‘we’re really working hard on innovating and getting all of our members involved in this process’. Ah well, that’s how those things go I suppose.

Music

So, out on the streets and on to the music. I actually saw a couple of pretty good acts yesterday.  I started off with Cashier No. 9 at Huize Maas: a nice indie-folkrock band with some really good tunes and a solid live show. Especially when the band rocked out a little harder, they sounded very driven and put on a good show. Was pretty surprised by the band actually. After that, in the same venue, Zulu Winter from England performed. I had heard the name before, because they gave out a single on Double Denim Records, a nice small record label. Zulu Winter is the act that is probably least experimental on the label (they’re now signed by PIAS by the way), but still I was quite excited. And they didn’t let down. Zulu Winter looked and sounded like they belonged on this stage, in front of a packed audience. Their sound is a bit pretentious, but they’ve really got some strong songs. Reminded me a bit of Wild Beasts actually; some falsetto singing, soulful melodies. Really curious to hear what the album is going to sound like.

After that: on with the shoegazepop of The History of Apple Pie. Which was quite ok. The live sound wasn’t al that good, but the dense layers of guitar feedback, well, can’t go wrong there of course. Plus it’s a funny sight really: two small girls next to two tall, sluggish boys on the stage. I tried to get in to the Bart Constant show after that, but the line outside was crazy, so I stuck to Het Paleis for a while and saw French Films play there: a typical, English indiepop band from, uhm, Finland. Anyways: They gave an energetic show and had the tunes to back for it as well. The formula was simple: steady-as-she-goes indierock with choruses shouted out by all the band members at the same time. Definitely put a smile on my face, as it did to a lot people around me.

I ended with two acts in Vera: synthpop band Niki & The Dove from Stockholm was the first and it reminded me of Austra. The sound was incredibly big, like it was built for a stadium, which actually suited the band pretty well. Niki & The Dove is synthpop at its most theatrical, complete with semi-spiritual dances/moves and faces painted with glitter. Not all their songs are equally memorable, but ‘DJ, Ease My Mind’ especially came out really well. I mean, it’s uncomplicated dance music, but at least it was done really well. After that, saw a little bit of M185 (which was ok), a bit of Clock Opera (actually a bit boring and overdone), but I really wanted to stick around for Stay+, one of the few bands I was actually really excited about seeing this weekend. I’ve been following these guys for quite some time now, and really like the mix of shrill dance music (almost like rave), lovely soundscapes and intense visual images. Tonight was no exception:  I was glad to see the room was pretty full, and that the audience actually went all-out. In the midst of the stage, there was a big screen that displayed abstract visuals next to beautifully shot video clips, and besides it there were only two laptops with guys bent forward behind it. The band kicked off with an incredibly loud drone, to start pumping beats right off after that. The dynamics of the show were especially well: soundscapes were blended in to create suspension, after which cold beats kicked in again. The audience looked ecstatic, and for a shot time I felt like I was in a Hacienda-type club, amidst of the Madchester times. Perfect ending to my night (it wasn’t over yet of course, although I skipped good old Rinus) and for me, the highlight of the evening.

People who visited Tilburg could play a tune on the brightly coloured pianos all across town. The project reached over 200.000 people and the remaining pianos are now up for auction! The profit will be donated to the foundation No Guts No Glory, which raises money for cancer treatments. During the first part of selling the pianos, Incubate already raised 2.000 euros for No Guts No Glory.

PAY ATTENTION: During the seven days of the project, the pianos stood outside and catched rain, wind and cold. The pianos that are up for auction cannot be played as instrument anymore, but you can still use them as a prop, art object or for the components.

Here is a new music video from Austra (Incubate 2011). The song ‘Spellwork’ is from their debut album ‘Feel it Break’ and one of the many great songs of Austra. ‘Spellwork’ is directed by Yelena Yemchuk.

The 14 organizations, Incubate is one of them, have collaborated and made a fresh and surprising program. A great way to start the new year with. The entrance is free and the doors are open at 13:30 on January 8th.

But what can you expect of Frisse Oren? You are going to be swept away by Amariszi‘s Balkanmusic from Dutch soil and be surprised by UIUIUI KOO with a mix of musical traditions. Third act on the bill are the Ping Pong Tactics, they mix different genres, from classical music to modern music.

There are various dance acts to keep you fascinated and you can decipher the mysteries of 013 with Indoor stadsgeheimen. You can enjoy all the different acts with some spectacular food from cookaholics. They make gastronomic taste sensation by using molecular cooking methods.

Without a doubt the highlight of ZXZW 2008 (yes, before we were even called Incubate. That long ago.) was Sun Ra Arkestra, who did up to six shows that week.
Sun Ra was one of the main innovators in jazz. The Arkestra is his future dream and his ancient body. It never was as popular as jazz’s best-known big bands, but it did have a steady following and was highly regarded in jazz circles. It appeared on “Saturday Night Live”, played a Central Park concert with Sonic Youth and was named best big band in Down Beat magazine’s critics poll five times. Sun Ra influenced the whole contemporary music scene and was a true independent mind.

Now, while we were digging through our archive, we found the recording of the Tuesday show in Paradox. It’s such a great show that we couldn’t keep it to ourselves. So here it is. The complete show. One of the six and the only one we could find. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

A new year and that means a new edition of Incubated! The 13th edition has two great acts on the bill: Malcolm Middleton and LUIK. Malcolm Middleton will perform a solo acoustic show with a lot of black humor. The Dutch indie-slowcore band LUIK will open for him tonight. A real treat don’t you think? The doors open at 20:00 at the Paradox, Tilburg.

Before Malcolm Middleton began making great solo albums, he was one of the main members of Arab Strap, together with Aidan Moffat.  His first post-Arab Strap album was called ‘A Brighter Beat‘ which got very good reviews. While the music began to sound a bit more optimistic, his lyrics were still very depressing, thus generating a schizophrenic record.  Malcolm Middleton is Malcolm Middleton and will always be Malcolm Middleton. A unique artist in every way.

LUIK is a band from Rotterdam, Holland and started in the summer of 2010. Lukas Dikker is leading the band and presents an indie-slowcore sound that result in ‘softly picked guitars, a pressing bass and whistling vocals.’ Their EP ‘Are You Lonesome Tonight’ came out last year, and their debut album OWLS is set to be released on the 13th of January, but you can purchase it at Incubated tomorrow night!

Looking back on the year 2011 a highlight was definitely the Incubate Festival. A week full of music, art, dance, film and many many more. A week which gave us the positive reactions on the Play Me, I’m Yours project, a film of Peter Broderick‘s stay in a farm, the DIY conference and of course all the artists, bands and people who worked with us during the festival.

Play Me, I’m Yours

In Tilburg and its surrounding areas 101 pianos were placed at different locations for people to play on, come together and to create something. We’ve seen a little kid singing and playing and we’ve seen an older man play whilst people were dancing to his sounds. Here is a short film about the Play Me, I’m Yours project by Sophie Tooten.

Peter & the Farm

Peter Broderick stayed for a week on a farm ‘t Schop in Brabant, the Netherlands to create new songs. He helped a cow gave birth, he worked on the farm and went to a slaughterhouse just to name a few things. It all comes together in the movie Peter & The Farm. DIY conference

The DIY conference was all about Do-It-Yourself! Big names came to give a keynote speech and told us how they did it themselves. Steve Ignorant was interviewed by John Robb, Michael Azerrad gave a speech and same as Bill Drummond. The year is coming to an end but we’ve got some surprises left in store for you! In the upcoming weeks, starting today, we’ll be posting the sets of our Global Mashups. For the project ‘Generation Bass presents Global Mashups vol.1‘ we at Incubate brought together vocalists and producers from non-Western countries and had them work with upcoming stars from Western dance genres like dubstep, skweee and tropical house whom they never met.

The second set of the Global Mashups is Hope Masike vs. Process Rebel. Hope Masike is a rising star in Zimbabwe and she is mixing traditional Zimbabwean music with jazz, blues and reggae. Opposite Hope Masike is Process Rebel, an American DJ spinning some very dubstep like reggae. They rehearsed together during the day, before entering the stage at night. The following mashups will be up and running on our blog and on Generation Bass in the next weeks:

After we saw the Dutch music/media site 3voor12 put together their Song Of The Year 2011, we thought that’s the only list left we didn’t pay attention to. So we made one.

Incubate’s Song Of The Year 2011 is a Youtube playlist with 100 songs. We didn’t make a top 100, because we didn’t know how to compare the drones of Natural Snow Buildings to the indiepop of Metronomy, to name two. So it’s no top 100 list, but it’s a nice way to get to know some music that the media kinda forgot about most of the time. We only had one rule while putting this together: only 1 song per band/act.

You cannot possibly like EVERY song here. It ranges from the death-metal of Ulcerate to the happy-pop of Retro Stefson. From the ambient of Tim Hecker to the indierock of The War On Drugs. Incubate 2012 is a long way from now, but here at Incubate HQ we’re already thinking of new ways and new ideas to give you a great festival. A month ago we asked you to send your concepts and ideas for the festival and we got some great response! To be exact we’ve got 61 entries from 9 different countries! That is truly amazing and fantastic because we are not doing this festival alone, you guys help us out by participating and contributing with your ideas and concepts.

It’s not to late to respond! If you like to be a part of this great festival, you’ll have until midnight to send your ideas to participate@incubate.org. All you have to do is fill in this form (HERE is the .doc/ HERE is the .pdf).

Last year was the beginning of a tradition with 7 organizations and this year 14 organizations are hosting the new years event called Frisse Oren – Cultureel en Muzikaal Vuurwerk at the 013, Tilburg. The 14 organizations, Incubate is one of them, have collaborated and made a fresh and surprising program. A great way to start the new year with. The entrance is free and the doors are open at 13:30 on January 8th.

But what can you expect of Frisse Oren? You are going to be swept away by Amariszi’s Balkanmusic from Dutch soil and be surprised by UIUIUI KOO with a mix of musical traditions. Third act on the bill are the Ping Pong Tactics, they mix different genres, from classical music to modern music.

There are various dance acts to keep you fascinated and you can decipher the mysteries of 013 with Indoor stadsgeheimen. You can enjoy all the different acts with some spectacular food from cookaholics. They make gastronomic taste sensation by using moleculair cooking methods.

Frisse Oren is a big treat for the year 2012, with music, dance, food and ofcourse to have a great time! We hope to see you there, because we wouldn’t want to miss this great way to celebrate a new year!

Visual artist Veerle Lavoir, who has been running the New Jacks project at Incubate for the last three years, has a new collaboration with another visual artist Katrien Ligt. Together they run the shellvpower.org blog, on art and design. But now they made some cool new designs for a competition by the Textielmuseum. The challenge is to design a new table runner, for you that are younger than 30, it’s like a tablecloth, but only partly on the table. But instead of going for traditional flower designs, lines or abstract look, they take this into the 21^st century with Crips vs Bloods designs, circuitry designs and even a sjoelbak design!

The end is near. 2012 is dawning. That only means one thing. No, not the resignation of Wilders. No, not the end of capitalism either. No, Incubate 2012 isn’t near yet. No, we don’t quit (how dare you say that?). It’s far more important than all of those things: it’s time for the year-lists! You know, the end-of-year-lists! The 25 best albums of 2011. And we want YOUR help!

We figured that nobody really cares what we listened to all year. But we care what you listen to all year! We figure the Incubate crowd to be very open-minded and diverse, so we’re really interested to see what will be the number 1, because we have absolutely no clue!

The duo Sepalcure is formed by Machinedrum‘s Travis Stewart and Braille‘s Praveen Sharma. So these guys know how to make music. Sepalcure have an album coming out on November 22, and they released a promo video for it yesterday. The song is called ‘Pencil Pimp’ and it’s ridiculously wicked. If you enjoyed acts like Motor City Drum Ensemble at Incubate, you will definitely like this.

The video is kinda weird. But we like it weird.

Things we love: shit like this. A free mixtape with everything heavy, loud, European and underground. With over 30 names (!!) bringing you everything between hardcore, grindcore, sludge, and so on.
It doesn’t only cover Incubate 2011 artists like Planks, Celeste, Alpinist, Daggers and the Dutch New Morality, but it also includes older Incubate artists such as Black Haven (2007).

Belgium has a lot of great hardcore bands. Go figure: Daggers, Oathbreaker, Your Highness… But on the forefront of the Belgian hardcore scene is Rise & Fall, who gained followers all over the world. They just released a new track yesterday from their forthcoming album ‘Faith‘, due out in early 2012. It’s called ‘Deceiver‘ and it’s one motherfucker of a hardcore track.

You can buy the 7″ from the band that performed on Incubate in 2005 and 2006, from Deathwish. It includes a cover of Belgian hardcore legends Congress.

This is something we really love. Tilburgs very own Bram Stadhouders just released a new CD: ‘Bell Time’ featuring Sidsel Endresen and Jim Black. We already blogged about this some days ago.

During the 2010 edition of Incubate Festival, Stadhouders performed with the Norwegian vocal artist Sidsel Endresen (a.o. Jon Eberson group) and the American drummer Jim Black (a.o. AlasNoAxis, Human Feel). This went so well, that they decided to make an album. So we’re extremely proud about this. And thanks to Muzieklab, we can give away 3 CD’s!

Bram Stadhouders started out as a guitarist and composter. After he won many prizes, he started focussing on jazz, rock, electronic and contemporary music. He played with Staplerfahrer, Spinvis, Laïs and Noel Redding. Next to that, he also did projects with Onno Govaert, Eric van der Westen’s XTD and Terje Isunget IceMusic.
And now he presents his latest project with Sidsel Endresen and Jim Black. It’s jazzy, electronic and even a bit ambient at the same time, with the haunting vocals of Endresen on top of that. It’s wonderful! Take a listen below if you’re still not convinced!
