It’s Thursday again, the Incubate office worked at full speed for all the confirmations for todays Incu Thursday. The line-up for Incubate 2012  already has 70 artists confirmed. Today we can add another four to the bill for the festival in September:

French musician Yann Tiersen (photo) will take one of the prominent spots on this year’s bill. He’s done soundtracks for Amélie and Good Bye Lenin!, but his main focus is touring and making studio albums. On his latest album he collaborated with Efterklang, Peter Broderick but also Matt Elliott, who just so happens to be the second confirmation for today.Last year Yann Tiersen’s music could already be heard at Incubate. Nu.nl wrote the following: How much the soundtrack of Amélie is imprinted in the collective memory was made very clear during the Play Me I’m Yours-project during Incubate festival. The catchy movie tune was by far the most played tune on the through the city scattered pianos

The hugely influential and one of the forerunners of techno and electronica genres Chris & Cosey are also added to the line-up of Incubate 2012. Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti formed this collaboration out of the ashes of Throbbing Gristle. The fourth confirmation for today is King Midas Sound, the London-based project which flies under the wings of Hyperdub.

Just like Wikileaks, Inculeaks brings important news and information to the public through Radio! Inculeaks gives the Incubate audience a new role as creative participator and functions as a constant leak of information sent straight from the Incubate audience, to the Incubate audience.

Inculeaks collaborates with radio stations, radio makers, artists, musicians and people with a interest in Independent Culture which provide us with their own audio files, and with that, leak their personal interests on Inculeaks. Inculeaks will air 24/7 during the Incubate festival in the local Ether in Tilburg and live-stream on our website.

Leading up to the festival we are going to do lot of interviews. With (Inculeaks) radio makers, artists, DJ’s and also the people involved with Incubate. In this edition we’ve got Sietse from Moving Furniture Records for you.

1. Can you please introduce yourself?
I’m Sietse from Amsterdam and I run a small record label called Moving Furniture Records. The focus on the label is experimental ambient, drone, minimal and field-recordings music but in future will also have more folk oriented outsider music. I also make music myself as Orphax. I also have organized a few living room concerts.

2. What can we expect of your Radio show on Inculeaks?
In the radio show there will be a mix of various forms of drone music from the minimal form to the more rock oriented forms. There will also be a huge focus on non-western music. Though, people shouldn’t look weird if there would pop-up an old classic Heintje tune as well.

3. In what way does Open Source affect you as a DJ?
I am not totally sure if open source really affects me as a DJ. DJ’ing is for me mainly playing some vinyl for a bunch of people. Though, as musician and label I can relate to it much more. In production there are several open source packages that I use for music creation and such. It opens up much more possibilities in composing because a lot of people deliver sets of plug-ins and other software that are based on Open Source. Through Open Source a form of freedom is created where there are more options to choose from to come to the same goal. This attracts me as a musician but also in other forms of art and in live as general.

4. Do you notice a difference in participation (interactivity) when you look at Radio DJ’s nowadays? Where do you think this comes from?
In all honestly I do not have a huge binding with radio nowadays. To me it is an old medium that has lost most of its interesting sides years ago. Though, there are on Dutch radio still some really good shows, such as VPRO Dwars by Berry Kamer, or the guys from Majjem in Venlo and X-Rated with Bob Rusche. These people have a fore-front focus in the music they play. They bring things you don’t hear anywhere else. Though, they do not really go far with interactive media. A blog, a twitter account and some rare facebook posts and that’s it.

Though there seems to be a small change where for example Berry is giving the opportunity to listeners to choose from the old archived recordings on what they would like to hear again. With more interactive options I guess radio stations and DJ’s try to reach a wider audience, or at least keep those who are already listening. But if this is true I don’t know. Besides the traditional radio these days there are more and more online radio stations as well as streaming services. I think they get a closer connection to interactive listening but I am totally out of the loop on this.

5. What are your plans for the (near) future?
There are several new releases planned for Moving Furniture Records, this May should see the first normal cd by Machinist (after a series of CD-R releases and one split 10″). After the Summer I have two more CD’s planned, one by my own project Orphax and one reissue of a great album by Accrual.

There will also be several small CD-R releases coming up on MFR again, as well as other places. And after the Summer I will try to organize a few more living room concerts and maybe setup a small tour in the Netherlands with my mate Steffan de Turck from Staplerfahrer (though this has been a plan for over a year now and we will see what happens this time). And for 2012, well: time will tell. There are some plans but it is still in my mind spinning.

This week we announce the following names: Celeste, The Kids and Yukon Blonde.

Celeste (FR) – 17/9

The nihilistic French band Celeste will probably hate most of you for being part of the evil in this world they call mankind, but will surely be thankful if you visit their show. Celeste melts some of France’s finest, besides cheese and baguettes, into their music. A bit of screamo chaos from Amanda Woodward or Aussitôt Mord, blended with the post-metal of Year of No Light and with a (post-) black metal undertone. Somewhat droning and atmospheric, but brutally heavy at the same time. If Envy, Neurosis and Converge would make love (or hate in this case), Celeste would be their deranged child. Playing in a small, dark venue with the minimal use of lights and some intense visuals suits their blackest and bleakest nihilistic music the best. And they certainly will do so!


The Kids (BE) – 18/9

“We play better. We don’t spit on the public anymore, now we try to amuse them” says frontman Ludo Mariman of The Kids about their reunion in 1996, but things were different before. The Belgian band The Kids were one of the first international punk rock acts back in 1976 after the big punk movement from the United Kingdom. They are seen the answer to the Ramones, The Damned and Sex Pistols mixed with the rock ‘n roll sounds of Lou Reed. The Kids took their name pretty literarily as some of the band members were still underage at that time. But they soon found their own sound and were playing own songs instead of filling ¾ of their set with Ramones covers. Songs like ‘Fascist Cops’ may not be as offending anymore as they were in 1978, but after their reunion in 1996, they are still just as catchy! The Kids will make you scream your lungs out like the old punk days!


Yukon Blonde (CA) – 12/9

Describing Yukon Blonde is actually pretty easy unlike some other acts here at the festival. Which of course is not a bad thing! With just a few keywords, you know the catch; poppy, accessible, catchy but above all, highly addicting. This Canadian three-piece, although occasionally inviting live guests, make straight forward, extremely catchy indie pop music by mixing the old (Fleetwood Mac) with the new (Fleet Foxes). Summer vibes all over! After successful tours, as well as a performance at SXSW last year, Europe is up next! If you can’t seem to get into Yukon Blonde and not singing along after a few listens, you’re doing something terribly wrong!

One of the two European countries without any McDonalds Albania has is own fast food chain: Kolonat. The name doesn’t look suspicious, but their brand imaging does. Being creative it is easy to write a K as an M. Of course, passing by this restaurant in Tirana made me having a look inside. I didn’t taste the food though.

Armut Macht Geil is the free, NO budget arts festival in Eindhoven on September 25 and 26, 2009 in Eindhoven. The program is a rich mix of music, performance, film and fine arts.

Armut Macht Geil is a statement about the hyper-organized world of music, design and fine arts, which is stuck by rules. To what extend does the artist, designer or performer depend on money? Does money make better art? Does no available budget make you creative or does it put you off? And how can such a festival be realized at no cost?

Last year’s edition proved that it can be realized, even very successfully, with Lady Aïda as the main act. Who will be the main act of the festival this year? TAC’s producer, Mike Dobber, keeps it a secret: “They have performed on both Lowlands and STRP, where they blew off the roof. It is very danceable, but more I cannot say.”

Artists include Style Liberation Front, Wouter Jaspers, The Snout Eating Livers, Jak Peters, OKC DJ-team and Victor Varalapatasio. The fine art section is represented by Sarah van Lamsweerde, Erik Vermeulen, Maurice van der Kaa, Renée van Trier, Nick LeBeat and Munne.

De zeer brede en gevarieerde programmering zorgt eigenlijk zelden voor problemen, omdat elke bezoeker wel iets van zijn of haar gading vindt. Het zorgt ook voor een gevarieerde opkomst en dat is precies wat Incubate wil. Het festival is allang niet meer dat ‘weekendje Tilburg met punk- en metalbands’. “Af en toe wordt er wel wat kritiek geleverd op het zogenaamde verlies van onze underground status,” zegt Kimenai, “maar dat zul je altijd houden. Wij willen ons niet vastklampen aan het predikaat’ underground’, wij praten nu bewust over ‘independent culture’.”
Terugkijkend op de afgelopen vijf jaar is de organisatie vooral trots op het feit dat een aanvankelijke hobby nu is uitgegroeid tot een actieve en organische stichting die in alle richtingen blijft groeien en bloeien en in staat is om volslagen onbekende artiesten, legendarische muzikanten, beginnende componisten en gevestigde kunstenaars in één week bij elkaar te brengen.

The release of the 100th free album download on the WM Recordings Netlabel label is rapidly approaching. One of the projects surrounding their 100th free album will be the release of an album of cover version of tracks from the WM Recordings catalog.

Do you play in a band? Pick your favorite WM Recordings track from www.wmrecordings.com and… cover it! You can choose from almost a thousand songs, varying in style from pop to afro-beat!

They will post submission guidelines on their site very soon, but you’re already invited to start submitting your cover versions. Deadline is September 25th.

The rules are simple: the track(s) must have been released by WM Recordings and your version should not be longer than 5 minutes. Also keep in mind that a remix does not count as a cover version. The fourth edition of the international BUT film festival in Breda (NL) will take place from September 9th until 13th, just before Incubate, which starts September 13th.  Extraordinary films of which you did not even know they had to be seen, will be shown on the white screen during a five day extravaganza that takes you into the exceptional side of cinema.

Broken Note (UK) – Filthy drum n bass, techno and dubstep
Jonquil (UK) – Our favourite band from Oxford, UK
Sleeps in Oysters (UK) -  Electronica, Experimental, Alternative
Antoni Maiovvi (IT/UK) -  Disco House, Electro

Of course, more names will be announced soon. With these names the currently confirmed line-up is:
Der Blutharsch, Dernière Volonté, Uri Caine, Jonquil, The Terrordactyls, Bain Wolfkind, Broken Note, Rummelsnuff, Sleeps In Oysters and Antoni Maiovvi.
More than 200 artists will perform at ZXZW 2009.

A temporary 2009 website will be up soon so you can start adding your favourites and writing the band-bio’s on our wiki-based website.

New Website

The long awaited new website finally released! It’s not the regular festival-website you normally expect. We wouldn’t be ZXZW without a totally new festival-website concept.
Just like Wikipedia, ZXZW gives you, the audience, the opportunity to fill the site. You can give your opinion about an artist and write their biography, add photo’s, video’s, links and (personal) tags.
The final bio’s will end up in the festival guide!

So, you better check out the new website right… NOW!

Nice man!!! But how do I contribute to the ZXZW wiki?

This is a little walkthrough:

1. Go to the GetOpenID website to signup for an account

2. Enter all details and follow the instructions

3. Move back to the ZXZW website and click on login

4. Enter your GetOpenID address, e.g. ‘getopenid.com/username‘ and click on ‘Login’

5. You’re redirected to the GetOpenID page. Select ‘Always’ or ‘Only This Time’ to login to the ZXZW website

6. You’re now logged in and redirected to the ‘New user-page’ (first time use only). Enter your details, upload a photo and click on submit

7. Now you can share your visions on an artist, upload photo’s, add video’s and add links to all artist-pages. You got the power!

After this date, Week- and Weekend ticket-prices will rise 5 euro to 40 euro, Saturday and Sunday tickets will be 2,50 more, from 10 to 12,50 euro.

After July 15th, ticket-prices will increase again, so be quick to save money!
