href="http://www.dewereldmorgen.be/foto/2011/10/18/liever-een-beweging-dan-een-scene" target="_blank">interview with DeWereldMorgen.be, giving his view on economical situations, his life as a musician and Haïti. The interview was taken before the Incubate Festival of this year, underneath the article you can see photos from the festival.

The interview gives a perfect view of what Greg Bennick is about. He tells about his bands ‘Trial’ and ‘Between Earth and Sky’. “Everybody in the band has an interest in politics, but the lyrics from the songs are more about philosophy, psychology and existential business. Facing you’re own problems is a first step to getting a positive image about yourself.” The interviewer asked him about how he felt about ‘Straight Edge’ and ‘Hardcore’ at the moment, which are both very (and even more) important to him than ever before. This is what he said, “Straight Edge keeps you dedicated to an idea, the idea that a clear head is important. [...] Hardcore means, for me nowadays, more than it used to do. I love it that people come together and be passionated and emotional about music and ideas.”

These are just snippets from the article, the rest of the interview will give you a good look at who Greg Bennick is, what his views are and how he interpretes the world. A man who is versatile, open and informative. His wise words: “Our goal is to let people go home with a positive feeling, power, engagement, common sense, friendship, love.. Art lives in the next layer outside the experience.”

<a

With New Jacks 3.0 we have asked five young artists that recently graduated at local academies to present their autonomous view on the theme of this year: We Are Incubate.

In this fifth and last edition we’ve interviewed Martijn van Dalen: Visual artist and theater maker Martijn van Dalen wants to stop people in their tracks and think about their lives. With humor, engagement or mystery he wants to show contradictions in what we say in relation to what we do. “I don´t want to be a preacher. And although my work pretends to be a message, it really isn´t.”

1. Can you please introduce yourself?
Martijn van Dalen; visual artist, theatermaker and creative bungler. I transform things that move me into an image. I’ve always been someone who stands in the world, someone who wants to know what’s going on. I traveled a lot, am very interested in the way politics and culture work. I love the world and pull me to the injustice and the way we as humans deal with this planet a lot. This is reflected in my work by combining hints of mystery, humor and commitment. So that the viewer frowns and thinks, “Did he say anything now?” At that moment the viewer will start cracking braincells about a certain possible subject. That’s my goal. I do not want a preacher who proclaims his faith. My work pretends to be a statement but is not. The humor and sometimes even entertaining aspect of my work are a means to the contradictions of modern human display. We want to save the world but would rather go by car to the supermarket if we could have easily gone by bicycle. I work with many different materials and make sculptures, installations and paintings. In recent years sculpture has become increasingly more important for me forced painting into the background.

2. What can we expect from you at Incubate?
Projekt 1: The Spekulator.

I would like to take the SPEKTATOR into the world of investment and SPEKULATIONS. The objekt I will show on Incubate is interactive, seductive and can make u RICH!!! It will be a sort of GAMBLING MACHINE!!!! If u take part in this u will become a real player in the global economy. This projekt will be active at the BKKC New Jacks exhibit. This projekt will not stop after Incubate 2011. During Incubate 2012 There will be a secret Network/profitshare oppurtunity (V.I.P.´s only).

Projekt 2: Karaokebath

The Karaoke Hot Bath will be standing at the official opening of Incubate 2011. Bring your bathing suit is the opinion because this hot-tub promises to be hilarious! You can sing in a nice warm bath with a great view over the site and still have all the necessary privacy. All in all it is a bizarre affair where you really need to go and have a look.

3. What do you think of the other New Jacks contenders?
Very good enspiring competative nice people.

4. What are your plans for the future?
I want to build a driving radiostation on a small truck. With this I want to drive into one of the refugeecamps in Afrika (like at the border of Somalia). There I want to hand out radio’s. I will play music and make radio to entertain the people in the camp.

[New Jacks 3.0] interview with Paul Geelen (in Dutch)

Culture

Incubate

incubate 2011

incubate festival

interview

new jacks

new jacks 3.0

paul geelen

read
<guid

Inculeaks gives the Incubate audience a new role as creative participator and functions as a constant leak of information sent straight from the Incubate audience, to the Incubate audience.

Inculeaks collaborates with radio stations, radio makers, artists, musicians and people with a interest in Independent Culture which provide us with their own audio files, and with that, leak their personal interests on Inculeaks. Inculeaks will air 24/7 during the Incubate festival in the local Ether in Tilburg and live-stream on our website.

Leading up to the festival we are going to do lot of interviews. With (Inculeaks) radio makers, artists, DJ’s and also the people involved with Incubate. In this edition we’ve got Leilani from Cease & Desist; The Myopic Narrative for you.

1. Can you please introduce yourself?
Heyo, I’m Leilani Trowell from the United States. I’ve been a resident of Tilburg for almost two years; moving here after graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During my university years, I did a short stint at the campus radio station WXYC (http://www.wxyc.org). This particular radio station has been running for over 30 years and is, according to that once-popular family show, Jeopardy, the 1st radio station to start streaming 24-hours on the internet. They really emphasized music education and exploring different forms of music. Which can be hard to do in a town like Chapel Hill that’s culturally obsessed with indie rock. In my personal musical quest, I discovered that the noisier forms particularly resonate with me and that’s how I came to meet my husband, Steffan de Turck, while he was touring with Wouter Jaspers in 2008.

2. What can we expect of your Radio show on Inculeaks?
I have only 2 interviews lined up in my 4 scheduled shows. On 13 September, I will interview my friend, Mike Brennan from Philadelphia to discuss those things the incubated are talking about this year. Among his many achievements, he has recently helped organize the Philadelphia event for Random Hacks of Kindness which gets technical developers in the same room as field experts to design and implement software solutions to humanitarian, human rights and sustainability problems. My 2nd interview on the 14th will be with former WXYC music director and still active DJ, David Strader to discuss radio, radio makers and open-source.

Other than that, listeners can expect the same sort of free-form radio making that I once did and still love. I’ve never been one to hold onto genres or themes. Although for the past couple of years, I’ve been listening to a lot of no-wave, Italo-disco and 90’s new jack swing when I’m not noise-ing out. Most likely, I’ll be having my own private dance parties in the radio booth.

3. In what way does Open Source affect you as a Radio maker?
I’m not currently doing radio and the WXYC music library was vast enough that I hardly ever brought anything along to my shows. However, I did make a lot of use out of sites like last.fm to surf through tags and other user-generated categories and radio shows to discover new artists and adding new, sometimes useless phrases to my vocabulary. Such as, new weird America, new rave, future garage, kitchencore, darkstep, ghoststep, post-dubstep, pop structure, protopunk, etc. In this way, my own musical knowledge and palate, naturally, would influence my radio making.

4. Do you notice a difference in participation (interactivity) when you look at Radio nowadays? Where do you think this comes from?
I guess it depends on what sort of radio station we’re talking about. If I start to listening to one of the 3 national Dutch stations, the personalities, the set-up and music rotations are still quite similar to the stations I listened to as a child in North Carolina. However, WXYC had it’s own dynamic scene associated with it; which isn’t so unlikely with university activities. DJ’s lived together, ate together, organized events together, partied together, made out on the dirty couch in the rock room, etc. One could say that it was a very insular subculture but WXYC and our shared love for music got us together. But I look back on those days with fondness. I also wore some really awesome outfits.

5. What are your plans for the (near) future?
I don’t have so much plans as rather dreams. I see my time here in Tilburg as temporary but I’m enjoying the learning experience – speaking Dutch, working with the Dutch, being ignored and yelled at by the Dutch (“DAT MAG NIET!!”). Maybe Den Haag will finally let me work as a nurse. I’ve been waiting for 2 years. Eventually, I’d like to go back to the States and go to grad school for Medical Anthropology. While I was getting my bachelors’, I worked in Mexico and Guatemala since my academic sights were trained on Mesoamerica. Being in Europe has turned everything upside down so I’m still trying to figure out what to do.

[New Jacks 3.0] interview with Joost Jansen (in Dutch)

Culture

art

Incubate

incubate 2011

interview

joost jansen

new jacks

new jacks 3.0

read

In this edition we’ve got Janpier from De Nightrider for you.

1. Can you please introduce yourself?
My name is Janpier Brands, from Friesland. I used to run a pirate radio station in the city of Groningen with a couple of friends. It was called ‘the Nightrider’. We were cought twice by the authorities, and had to pay enormous amounts of money to stay out of jail. Really, it’s far cheaper to rape and/or kill then to be a pirate. This was all in the nineties. We had a musical blend of traditional Dutch Language Schlager music, jazz, organ music, in short: music we found on flea markets and in the thrift store. Some of the stuff we did can be found on the internet. In the current year of 2011 I am a teacher, I love to do interventions, I like the idea of Homo Ludens. I have a modern dance group.

2. What can we expect of your Radio show on Inculeaks?
We’ll try and unleash some Tilburg secrets. With a group of people from Friesland (Janke, Willy Darktrousers, Hugomatic and more) we will explore local sounds, people, traditions, traffic, games, protest, and such. This we will mix with the sounds of birds like Johan&Henk, het Sneeuwbal Trio, Earl Bostic, Roy Orbison, and such. It will be next level infotainment, shooting our arrows on both the head and the heart.

3. In what way does Open Source affect you as a Radio maker?
Open source means: building together. It means: participation, democratication, co-creating, freedom, responsability, sharing. At this point, we have no idea in what way this all will affect us. May be not al all, who knows?

4. Do you notice a difference in participation (interactivity) when you look at Radio nowadays? Where do you think this comes from?
Yes of course! on the one hand, there is still the old fashion participation and interaction in games, call-in items, charts and all that stuff. on the other hand: everybody can start his own station! If you don’t like the station: start your own! The whole thing is: everybody is starting his own station (or shufflin’ their iPod, or last FM/Spotify), and therefore is living in his own bubble, wich eventualy leads to no participation at all! And if there is an attempt to participate it is (A) anonymous, as a ‘reaguurder’ on a forum (B) in front of a jury, that makes a fool out of you. May be a total free concept like Radio Nightrider might be the one that burst the bubble. Where does this come from? We don’t like restistance. Everything has to be custom made. There is an decreasing interest in each other, in diversity.

5. What are your plans for the (near) future?
“John Maus is a man of many talents. He’s a composer who met Ariel Pink at music school and was part of the original Haunted Graffiti lineup. His new album, We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves combines a Moroder/Jarre/Vangelis synth palette and sinister, fog-veiled images straight out of the Ridley Scott playbook with a vocal style that sounds like it comes from a monk who’s spent too long in some echoey dungeon, precisely copying illuminated manuscripts. For all the talk about hauntology, retromania, and all the hand-wringing about how the current moment is a tail-eating cultural dead end, Maus’ aesthetic is much more considered, and ambitious. Maus has spent years studying towards a PhD in political philosophy, and he explains how his songwriting choices are made in protest against neoliberal ideals. He’s looking to write music that uses elements from the 80s soft-rock palette and action film scores, as well as medieval modes, to create something both of this moment and beyond. It’s not about literal copying, but choosing the right sonic responses to articulate a universal response to right now.”

[Read] Done Waiting interviews Let’s Wrestle (Incubate 2011)

1

Incubate

incubate 2011

Indie

interview

Let's Wrestle

In this edition we’ve got Perry Witteveen for you.

1. Can you please introduce yourself?
I’m Perry Witteveen and since I can walk, I’m crazy about music!! At the age of 16 a friend invited me to join him at his radio station (Metropool in Belgium) and from that moment on, I was addicted to present a radio show. In 1996 I got the opportunity to get my own radio station in Tilburg (Clos FM) and I managed the station ’till 2004. Now I’m presenting my radio show on the internet everyday from 12 ’till 7 on Radio 1308 and Clos FM and can’t wait to come to Tilburg to present my program at the Incubate festival.

2. What can we expect of your Radio show on Inculeaks?
It’s gonna be a crazy show, with a lot of artists who will come to the studio for an interview. And a lot of people outside the studio who know me and didn’t see me for a long time.

3. In what way does Open Source affect you as a Radio maker?
I think it’s GREAT!!! I wished they invented that 20 years ago!!! The best way to let DJ’s show their talent for an audience!!! All you need is a computer, music, a USB mic and start recording!!!!

4. Do you notice a difference in participation (interactivity) when you look at Radio nowadays? Where do you think this comes from?
Yes and no. In the time I presented my show on 99.7 mhz in Tilburg, my ex wife could go crazy about the incoming calls for requests, greetings or the fact that the goldfish of the neighbors had passed away……. Now, it’s just receiving and answering the msn messages and mails. Cheaper and easier!!

5. What are your plans for the (near) future?
My plans for the near future are……….. Keep on breathing and taking care of my daughter, Yalenca, she ‘s gonna celebrate her second birthday on the 9th of august. And of course, keep on presenting my radio show and writing a lot of songs for the artists, because that’s my second hobby.

[Read] interview with Paul Clipson (Incubate 2011)

Culture

Incubate

incubate 2011

interview

Jefre Cantu-Ledesma

Jefre Cantu-Ledesma & Paul Clipson

On land fest

read
<guid

In 2000 I graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. I lived as a painter for a couple of years, but it never felt right for me. I started disliking the idea of sitting all alone in my workshop all day, inhaling toxic fumes. After a while I realized that my real passion was in filmmaking. I love the fact that you make something together with a group of people, and that everybody involved plays an important part. The process of collaboration with actors and technicians continues to be very exciting and liberating for me.

When I started making films four years ago, I really didn’t know anything about how to make a film. I had to invent a lot of things from scratch. That made it really hard sometimes, but it was also very stimulating. I think it enables me to think very freely about storytelling and cinematography as compared to people who have a formal education in filmmaking.

My films are usually pretty experimental. Most of my projects involve some kind of technical challenge, trying to find new ways to tell a story or convey an emotion. I like playing with shadows, textures and colors. I guess I can never really let go of my background as a painter.

Your film ‘Fascination’ will have its premiere at the Incubate open source film program. Can you tell us more about the film?

‘Fascination’ is one of my favorites so far. It’s got nice textures, catchy music, an interesting technique, and a pretty girl. So I am very excited to show it to people at Incubate.

For a long time I have wanted to do stuff with projections. I was especially inspired by a video installation by Hans Breder, called Tlacolula. I saw that in New York. He projected Mexican street scenes on a curtain flowing in the wind, and created a distinctive, mysterious mood with very simple means.

My film features actress Jorien van der Keijl, who dresses herself in front of a white wall. She moves with the music, which makes it look like she is doing a striptease in reverse. I watched a lot of Betty Page striptease films as an inspiration.

I have made several short films with old jazz on the soundtrack. For this film, I chose the piano piece ‘Fascination’ by James P. Johnson, recorded in 1939. So that’s where I got the title of the film.

For the film, you’ve created a technique which gives the film its layered look. Could you tell us more about this working process?

It’s complicated to explain, actually. It’s ten images stacked on top of each other, each of them containing Jorien dressing herself. The ‘bottom’ layers are very vague and purplish, while the ‘top’ layer is sharp and in normal colors. How did we do it?

We first let Jorien dress herself in front of a white wall and filmed it. Then we projected this video on the wall, put Jorien in front of this wall again and then filmed her dressing herself again, in almost the same way. And after filming this second take, which now contains two girls, we projected this video on the wall and again filmed it with Jorien in front of it. Etcetera. The only difference is that in every take she walks into the frame at a later point in time. We did that ten times. So there are ten overlapping girls in the end. You have to see it to understand it, really.

What I like about this idea, is that we did everything on-set and in-camera. There was no editing, color correction or compositing involved. What you see is what we filmed on the set that day. It’s very pure.

I really had no idea how it would turn out when we started. I just had to trust this hunch of mine that something special would happen. For instance,<br

So that was one of those little surprises that sometimes happen when you’re experimenting. It’s what makes filmmaking so exciting for me: seeking risks, trusting your instincts, and letting your imagination take over.

You can expect WEIRD FUNKY GROOVY PSYCHEDELIC ODDBALL TUNES that will make your brain smile or freak you out.

3. In what way does Open Source affect you as a Radio maker?
Well I can kind of take a little bit of this and a little bit of that and change it up or just use it. Plus I can hand out my own material the same way I take material and let other people do their thing with it. But I’m not sure if it’s really affecting me because I’ve always been working this way even if stuff was not open source…

4. /> Not really. I’m not sure. You know, to be honest I never really listen to the radio man…

5. What are your plans for the (near) future?
Plenty!! Besides perhaps more (online?) radio shows I’ll be releasing a bunch of mixtapes from a bunch of weird creative people. I’ll also be setting up more events that are alternative music + art related, there will be live shows, dj gigs, art gigs and there will be comic books and other funky gear that will be released via my Garden of Eyes company.. In this edition we’ve got Hugo from Red Light Radio for you.

1. Can you please introduce yourself?
“Red Light Radio is an online radio station that broadcasts from a former prostitution window in the Red Light District in Amsterdam. It was founded in December 2010 by Hugo van Heijningen and Orpheu de Jong and since the start has a very wide musical programming ranging from Metal to House to obscure Disco to Experimental Music. Red Light Radio has a 24 hour stream and broadcasts live 4 days a week. All shows are recorded and available on demand.”

2. What can we expect from your radioshow at Inculeaks?
“We’re planning to program the shows on Inculeaks as broad as we do here behind the window. So you can expect music for listening, music for dancing, comforting music, music to get uncomfoterable from, shows with more talking, shows with less talking, experimental things, you might even hear someone singing.”

3. In what way does Open Source affect you as a DJ?
“We’re a very open radio station and the fact that we’re so open brings us a lot of good suprises. Of course we invite friends that we know who do cool things and artists that we like, but we do like to discover new things too. Sometimes it doesn’t work and you have a show that you don’t really like, but that doesn’t happen so often.”

4. Do you notice a difference in participation (interactivity) when you look at Radio DJ’s nowadays? Where do you think this comes from?
“Well we’re an internet radio station, so the interacitivty is much more noticable than with “normal” radio I guess. Of course this is mainly because of social media; in our player there’s a Facebook chatbox so people can react during shows, and they do. Through our Facebook and Twitter page we get a lot of interaction with the people that listen to and follow Red Light Radio. The on demand section of Red Light Radio through Soundcloud also works really well because people can directly comment on shows, download them and share them somewhere else.”

5. What are your plans for the (near) future?
“At the moment we’re trying to get our funding for the coming year straight in order to survive. We’re doing this through crowdfunding site voordekunst, right now we’re on 50% so we still need help! If we reach 100% of the funding then the plans for the near future are to program even more hours of live braodcast than we do now. Also we’ll make a proper iPhone app for Red Light Radio on the go and we’ll add a videostream to the station. You can also expect more Red Light Radio parties and more occasions like this where Red Light Radio steps out of the “peeskamer” and broadcasts as part of festivals or other events.”

[Incubated 09] interview with Frank Fairfield

Culture

frank fairfield

incubated

incubated 09

interview

loops haunt

paradox

stranded horse

“Hi, im Scott Gordon- i stay in Scotland and make experimental electronic music and DJ. been making tunes for the last 10 yrs, i started of making simple synth recordings and sampling sounds all onto tape and playing with FX pedals for guitars. I still work completely with hardware but now i focus mainly on manipulating and processing sounds into rhythm.”

2. Have you played in the Netherlands before and if so, what’s your view on or experience with the scene you’re operating in in The Netherlands?
“I’ve always been a fan, ive collected lot of hardcore records from labels like rotterdam records, forze, and also the recent beat dimension series from rushour is outstanding compilation of beats. is no secret that the dutch scene is ace and there a lot of people working to keep it fresh. hats off to them” :)

“I’ve played a few times with various other acts- Venetian Snares, Ed DMX, Rustie,Dorian concept, Slugabed, Ladyscraper, Brokennote, its always been really good- the crowds are really open, which is perfect for my experimental style, i have had completely different experiences from really hardcore events to laid back hip hop parties and ambient electronic sessions, all really unique and great fun.”

“It’s obvious that the dutch know how to enjoy themselves at the same time as appreciating the more obscure elements in electronic music. its a really forward thinking place, ive got a lot or respect for the dutch scene. Also- you guys have chocomel - chocomel blew my mind.”

3. What can we expect of your gig at Incubated?
“This year i’ve changed my set for every gig, i have a lot of new music at various stages so ill see on the night how people react to certain things and lately i have had a habit of playing a bunch of jungle and dance-floor towards the end of the set- usually you can expect a really wide mix of beats and samples jammed out on a trigger pad sequenced into something, certainly im always looking to push beats as far as they will go. One thing you will not hear is “cheesy shit dubstep” hah.”

4. What do you think of the other acts playing at Incubated 08 (Frank Fairfield, Stranded Horse)?
“Yeah really good, im looking forward to seeing both acts, i love instruments, especially when they are played well. I’m a big fan of early blues- and ragtime music, on of my tunes “jolpin” is named after scott joplin. Frank Fairfield sounds seems to be in that direction but equally its own. Super talented.”

“Stranded horse sounds ace too, i think he is playing a kora in a lot of what ive heard, id love to sample one of those things, im always recording things from the inside of my piano im sure it would be similar.”

5. What are your plans for the (near) future?<br

With thousands of bands representing their music you get the opportunity to create your own playlists and listen to all your favorite Canadian music, whenever you want or simply stream the excellent radioshows. If that platform would not have been there, I’d probably never have discovered all these beautiful artists. In that way it doesn’t matter if you’re a musician, radio maker or whatever. The open source approach on music brings us all closer together.

4. Do you notice a difference in participation (interactivity) when you look at Radio nowadays? Where do you think this comes from?
Like I said before, especially streaming radio and integrating bandprofiles and playlists is a great way to give the listener the opportunity to ‘do more’ with music in the same space/platform. All the magical things of radio are united: taping your favorite songs and listening back to them, discovering new music, meeting people with common musical interests, etc. In that way, the essence hasn’t changed. But instead of exchanging cassette tapes in your living room with a few friends, the radio forums are your living room, your friends are from all over the world and your cassette tape is an online playlist.

5. What are your plans for the (near) future?
I’m graduating art school this year and I’m planning on working more for festivals and in the live music scene, while working on my own art as well. And of course, eventually, I’ll go to Canada to find out for myself what’s it’s really all aboot!

[Incubated] exclusive interview with Eklin

Culture

Eklin

Gary War

hype williams

Incubate

incubated

interview

john maus

Night People

ONWA

paradox

peaking lights

Rik Möhlmann

sightings

stellar om source
<guid

During Incubate Johnny and Kemper were unable to participate for personal reasons. We then decided to play as a trio plus Rik Mohlmann on visuals. I think it’s good if you can be flexible as a group. Moreover, it has a positive effect. We all got a lot of new energy and inspiration by making music with a different lineup. We made a lot of new material in that period and that material is now finding it’s way back into recent live sets we do as a five piece.

In the few interviews you’ve done you clearly stated that your songs are created by improvisation. To what extent do you improvise during live shows?

That depends on which show you’re attending. Sometimes we only play songs and sometimes we improvise the whole show. Usually it’s somewhere in between. Improvisation can be the best there is if you’re not worried about the result but purely focus on the moment. The search is more important than the goal. This is also important for the listener. Listeners must always have the freedom to create their own stories and images during a show. Therefore I regret that at an earlier interview with 3voor12, the headline was: “We make ‘troostmuziek’ [solace music]”. It suggests that we, with or without premeditation, have decided to make “solace music”. This contradicts the whole idea behind Eklin. Namely, that our music is constantly evolving and we are guided by coincidences and circumstances of the moment.

You did release shows for “Onwa” with Gary War, Hype Williams and Stellar Om Source, a sign that you know what’s happening right now. How did you get into contact with these bands?

We met Christelle (Stellar Om Source) during one of our first shows. That was at Mediamatic Amsterdam, where she also played that night. I think it’s fantastic what she does. She was really at the cradle of the whole cosmo/New Age/synth revival that is going on these days. She herself has already embarked upon a new path with acid/italo-like dance. She liked our show very much that night and invited us to do a show together in The Hague. From there on we kept in touch. Gary War and Hype Williams were suggested by Subbacultcha!, something I was really happy with. I was already a fan of both and it was great to do a release show with such great acts.

I heard the new Peaking Lights record ‘936’ and immediately was reminded of Eklin. Do you feel a relation with that band?

Yes the new Peaking Lights is wonderful. The way they link poppy melodies with repetitive song structures and a lo-fi dubby production is very beautiful.

What are your plans for the future?

We are working on new songs for the second full length. Furthermore Onwa is just released on tape in the USA by Night-People. Hopefully we can go there for a tour some day.

[Inculeaks] interview with Moving Furniture DJ Team

Culture

Amsterdam

Incubate

inculeaks

independent culture

interview

live radio

moving furniture records

radio

streams

tilburg

Cam Deas live @ Moving Furniture HQ

Just like Wikileaks, Inculeaks brings important news and information to the public through Radio!

In this edition we’ve got Sietse from Moving Furniture Records for you.

1. Can you please introduce yourself?
I’m Sietse from Amsterdam and I run a small record label called Moving Furniture Records. The focus on the label is experimental ambient, drone, minimal and field-recordings music but in future will also have more folk oriented outsider music. I also make music myself as Orphax. I also have organized a few living room concerts.

2. What can we expect of your Radio show on Inculeaks?
In the radio show there will be a mix of various forms of drone music from the minimal form to the more rock oriented forms. There will also be a huge focus on non-western music. Though, people shouldn’t look weird if there would pop-up an old classic Heintje tune as well.

3. In what way does Open Source affect you as a DJ?
I am not totally sure if open source really affects me as a DJ. DJ’ing is for me mainly playing some vinyl for a bunch of people. Though, as musician and label I can relate to it much more. In production there are several open source packages that I use for music creation and such. It opens up much more possibilities in composing because a lot of people deliver sets of plug-ins and other software that are based on Open Source. Through Open Source a form of freedom is created where there are more options to choose from to come to the same goal. This attracts me as a musician but also in other forms of art and in live as general.

4. Do you notice a difference in participation (interactivity) when you look at Radio DJ’s nowadays? Where do you think this comes from?
In all honestly I do not have a huge binding with radio nowadays. To me it is an old medium that has lost most of its interesting sides years ago. Though, there are on Dutch radio still some really good shows, such as VPRO Dwars by Berry Kamer, or the guys from Majjem in Venlo and X-Rated with Bob Rusche. These people have a fore-front focus in the music they play. They bring things you don’t hear anywhere else. Though, they do not really go far with interactive media. A blog, a twitter account and some rare facebook posts and that’s it.

Though there seems to be a small change where for example Berry is giving the opportunity to listeners to choose from the old archived recordings on what they would like to hear again. With more interactive options I guess radio stations and DJ’s try to reach a wider audience, or at least keep those who are already listening. But if this is true I don’t know. Besides the traditional radio these days there are more and more online radio stations as well as streaming services. I think they get a closer connection to interactive listening but I am totally out of the loop on this.

5. What are your plans for the (near) future?
There are several new releases planned for Moving Furniture Records, this May should see the first normal cd by Machinist (after a series of CD-R releases and one split 10″). After the Summer I have two more CD’s planned, one by my own project Orphax and one reissue of a great album by Accrual.

There will also be several small CD-R releases coming up on MFR again, as well as other places. And after the Summer I will try to organize a few more living room concerts and maybe setup a small tour in the Netherlands with my mate Steffan de Turck from Staplerfahrer (though this has been a plan for over a year now and we will see what happens this time). And for 2012, well: time will tell. There are some plans but it is still in my mind spinning.
