The Sonic Acts festival is well-known for interdisciplinary projects and the focus on developments at the intersections of art, technology, music and science. The festival consists of live performances, a conferance, film programme and an exhibition. The fourteenth edition will take place 23-26 February at various locations in Amsterdam

The theme for this edition is ‘Travelling Time’ and offers an experience of time and ideas relating to time. Time is a complex and ongoing technological developments continually change our notions of time. Communication networks operate at light speed and computers process data in real-time without human mediation, resulting in a gap between machine time and the human experience of it.

Masterclasses
In collaboration with the Stedelijk Museum and STEIM, Sonic Acts will host a series of Master Classes as part of this year’s festival theme Travelling Time. The master classes will be supervised by Catherine Christer Hennix, Peter Kubelka, Olaf Nicolai, Pauline Oliveros and Tino Sehgal

The master classes provide a unique opportunity to work with five internationally renowned artist whose work critically reflects on time and timing. In a concentrated and intimate setting, participants will gain insights into the ‘artist’ concepts, creative processes and methods of composition and production through hands-on workshops and seminars.

The deadline for applications is February 12. Send a biography and a short statement of motivation to take part in a specific master class to masterclass@sonicacts.com.

Dates & locations
The masterclasses take place in Amsterdam at STEIM, SMART Project Space and de Balie.

February 20 – Olaf Nicolai
A German artist whose conceptual approach and use of diverse media question the way in which we view our everyday environment. He also translates theories from science and the arts into aesthetic-artistic idioms, rendering them accessible in a new context. His works deal with the perception of time in the reception of art. Nicolai has participated in international solo and group exhibitions. His works were shown at Documenta X, and at the 49th and 51st Venice Biennales. Several of his works can be found in public collections, such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Thyssen Bornemisza Art

February 21 & 22 – Catherine Christer Hennix
Composer, philosopher, mathematician and visual artist. In the 1960’s and 1970’s, she worked with illustrious figures such as La Monte Young and Pandit Pran Nath, who were very important for her own work. She has frequently collaborated with the American anti-art philosopher, composer and violinist Henry Flynt. Hennix also draws inspiration from Japanese Gagaku music and early vocal music of Perotinus and Leoninus. All her major compositions, including The Electric Harpsichord, are regarded as part of an ongoing, endless cycle. Hennix’ two-day master class will investigate the relationship between modern music, programming and linguistics, and relate the latter to mathematical structures.

February 22 – Peter Kubelka
A multifaceted artist and theoretician who has worked in film, cooking, music, architecture, speech and writing. He communicates through lectures, which also use non-verbal elements “to free our world view from being the exclusive property of language.” Kubelka’s cinematographic work is short and highly condensed. His “Metric Films” preceded and laid the foundations for structural cinema. Kubelka will lead a master class on film and cooking.

February 23 – Pauline Oliveros
Composer, performer and humanitarian, she is an important pioneer in American music and electronic music. She has explored sound for five decades, breaking new ground for herself and others. Through improvisation, electronic music, ritual, teaching and meditation, she created a body of work with such breadth of vision that is profoundly affects those who experience it. Oliveros will lead a Deep Listening session.

February 23 – Tino Sehgal
A British-German artist whose works, which he calls “constructed situations,” involve one or more people carrying out instructions conceived by the artist. What all of Sehgal’s works have in common is that they reside only in the space and time they occupy, and in the memory of the work and its reception. The artist himself describes his works as “constructed situations,” whose materials are the human voice, language, movement and interaction, without the production of physical objects. His pieces are choreographies that are regularly staged in museums or galleries, and continuously executed for the entire duration of a show. In 2012, he will present a newly commissioned work for the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern, London.

Sonic Acts is a really cool festival. Spreading over 4 days (23-26 februari), the bi-annual Sonic Acts in Amsterdam bring a diverse line-up from everything like classical composters to experimental pop, beatless dubstep and contemporary techno. The line-up includes the likes of new names like Youth Lagoon and to technopioneer Model 500 to the self-made instrumentents by Ellen Fullman.

But it’s not just music. Arts, visuals, conferences, expermental technologies… It’s pretty hard to explain what Sonic Arts is about. So we’ll just quote the festival itself:

“Since its inception in 1994, the bi-annual Sonic Acts festival has questioned, examined, assembled and exhibited contemporary and historicaldevelopments at the cutting edge of art, technology, music and science. The festival consists of numerous live performances, an internationalconference, an extensive film programme and an exhibition, complimented by a publication. Each edition has a specific topic. Over the years, Sonic Acts has become internationally renown as an exceptional festival for technology art with specific attention for aesthetics and research into interactivity, new forms for presentation and interfaces, interdisciplinary projects and exploring new alliances between different disciplines.

The artistic practice of Tris Vonna-Michell (b. 1982, Rochford, UK) is an explosive mix of performance, installation, music, literature, slang and rhythm. It adds a new chapter in a long tradition of storytelling. In his performances he takes the audience on a mental and physical journey, in which objects in space get a deeper meaning, he combines heroic and les heroic moments and swifts links between far away geographical places and places not belonging to the same time era. In his high-speed storytelling style words and sentences change into a puzzling combination of rhythmic and abstract compositions. In the installation in which Vonna-Michell performances take place video projection, lyrics and objects are used as theatrical props for telling the story.

The English artist Matt Stokes (1973) makes work in which performance, music ans social engagement come together. His artistic practice is marked by anthropological research and an interest in events of informal movements theat bind people together. His work exists from intensive research and active collaboration with local communities, studying the social and visual language of specific subcultures. Has has explored different genres of music, like Northern Soul, acid/ house and black metal, revealing music as a universal language to create fellowship and community.
Never listen to music alone again.

This is amazing and freakin’ hilarious! Do you ever wonder, when you’re listening to music, what kind of drink is fitted with the tunes coming out of your stereo? Or maybe when you don’t know what you feel like drinking this gives an answer to all your questions. Go to the Drinkify website and type in the band or artist you’re listening to. It suggest the best drink possible that fits with the music. Here are a few examples we tried at Incubate HQ.

- Cannibal Corpse: 1 oz Blood
- Nirvana: 10 oz Marjiuana
- Dirty Beaches: 1 bottle of box wine
- Justin Bieber: 8 oz Red Bull

You can tweet your findings on twitter and to accompany the band you can hear a song from the artist or band in the background. Don’t wait any longer and go check it out, you’ll never have to listen to music alone again!

Music from Saharan Cellphones vol. 1 and vol. 2 are free compilations of sounds taken from cellphones across Africa. The usage of cellphones in Africa these days is more for music and video playback, recording, and transmission than talking/SMSing. Christopher from the blog Sahel Sounds describes this as follows (read more after the break):

“As all the weary passengers sit, they all are pulling out cellphones, and soon the mass is illuminated by little square blue screens. There is no cellular phone reception here — this is not important. They are not making calls. Rather, what ensues is an orchestra of tinny digital audio, a menagerie of sound, beamed out like starlight over the plain.”

He then collected these sounds and put them out for everyone to download. Both compilations can be found here:

SHELLVFILM#4 – THE OUTER LIMITS:
“There is nothing wrong with your television. Do not attempt to adjust the picture..” zo begint elke aflevering van THE OUTER LIMITS, een korte verhalen overgezet naar televisieserie uit 1963.

SZ2 – EP3: BEHOLD ECK!
SZ2 – EP5: DEMON WITH A GLASS HAND

STEPH BYRNE FOTO EXPO:

LEST/BEST: MATTIJS RUMKE

VR 9 juli – 20 uur:
PHOTO-CHOP-SHOP

SHELLVFILM#2 – NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 1984/2010
Oh How the mighty have fallen…

I’m returning after a few weeks of silence with my personal recommendations for this years festival. Even though the line-up is far from complete the number of must-see artists is already piling up. Keep in mind that due to the earliness of this post I can not take the time schedule into consideration so it might be impossible to see all of these.

Frog Pocket

Some of the breakcore addicts out there might not be happy with this description but the way I see it Frog Pocket sounds like a better version of Venetian Snares “My Downfall”. Acoustic instrumentation combined with all kinds of glitchy beats, moody, relaxing and even dance-able at times.

Switchblade

Ultra slow, ultra heavy, ultra loud trio from Sweden. Doom/drone/sludge in it’s purest form. Go listen to the self titled record (this is a cheesy joke, check thier discography haha).

Oranssi Pazuzu

From my point of view this is a strange recommendations as I’m not 100% convinced that I like this band. Other then some Ulver, Bone Awl and Dreams of the Drowned black metal has been one of the few genres that I just can’t seem to appreciate. At this moment I’m not sure if they belong with these few names that do stand out for me but it sure does sound a lot more interesting then the new Burzum record.

The Skull Defekts

Minimalistic, almost tribal, noise rock leaning to post-punk. The simplistic approach is awesome but the band really stands out by the almost hypnotic vocals that dig deep into your brain. They played WORM(Rotterdam) a few days ago, can anybody tell me how it was?

Drunkdriver

This is my kind of music. Nice blend of hardcore, noise-rock and a good dose of punk rock attitude all drenched in feedback and sludge-like vocals. If this doesn’t do it for you the collab with Mattin will.

Action Beat

Everyone should go see this, even if it’s just to count the number of people playing that day. The line-up these guys play in is so fluid that one day they might play with 6 members and the next day there will be 14 of them on stage. I can’t wait to see the formation they bring to Tilburg, let’s hope it contains a lot of drummers.

Blind to Faith

Reproach, Amenra, Insult and Rise & Fall. If you like any of those bands I’m going to make your day. Blind to Faith is a supergroup with members of all these projects in it. It’s like the best parts are taken out of each band and combined into one massive mix of hate, agression and sheer power. “The Seven Fat Years Are Over” is thier first output and it destroys any other record in it’s league.

Gum takes tooth

A duo, sometimes joined on an extra drumkit by a member of Shit & Shine. Thier sound is somewhere between noise and noise rock due to the drum sounds sometimes turning into the noise and vice versa. The extra pair of drums by Valentina might be able to add some more structure but will probably just add some more of the ever sweet chaos these guys bring so well.

Ducktails

Saving the best for last I can say I’m super happy seeing my tip getting turned into reality with the appearance of Ducktails. Lo-fi hazy bedroom psychedelic surf noise pop or something like that. Miami beach mid summer while taking way too much acid, that’s kinda what it sounds like I think. This is hipster heaven at the moment but nonetheless it’s very awesome, very good.

I could go on forever but that’s not the point of recommendations so I’ll stop. Be sure to check the whole line-up for yourself as it constantly keeps growing and has something for everyone. One last recommendation is about our Dutch pride: Nikoo, Eklin and Laser Poodle, all noisy dutch and super catchy.

He has released a string of CDr’s on various independent labels, along with a solo LP and split LP with fellow solo guitarist Spoono on Blackest Rainbow, and most recently an improvised 7″ on The Great Pop Supplement. Deas plays his guitar with such raw urgency and crisp production; it’s playing that is hard to define. Deas will spend nearly 10 minutes on the opening track luring you into a quiet and beautiful world before he really unleashes the picking attack on his guitar.
American director and photographer Cary Loren was part of the band Destroy All Monsters
An anti-rock band founded in direct reaction to the pretensions and complacency of 1970s pop music, the Detroit-based noise deconstructionists Destroy All Monsters earned their greatest notoriety at the peak of the punk era, thanks to a lineup that included alumni of the MC5 and the Stooges. Named after a cult-favorite Japanese monster movie, Destroy All Monsters was formed in 1973 by art students Niagara (a former model), Jim Shaw, Mike Kelley, and Cary Loren; influenced by everything from underground comix to film noir to psychedelia, the highly visual group was experimental and abrasive, with Niagara’s Betty Boop-vocals and squealing violin cresting atop waves of trance-like sonic dementia.
Jason Ankeny @ allmusic.com

For The Destroyed Room on the 5th of March Cary made a special movie that he filmed in the ruins of Detroit and he will participade in a musical performance with some local musicians from Tilburg.
The line up will be:

Cary Loren
Ries Doms – drums (ex Spades, Powervice, Bars, now in Hooghwater)
Frank Kimenai – bass (Anaphylactic Shock)
Michiel Eikenaar – vocals (Anaphylactic Shock, Nihill)

To quote Cary:

“the performance will sound something like ambient free jazz and
doom metal. I am going for hellish Buddhist sounds in a bleak and empty landscape. I don’t know what to listen to maybe death metal + Don Cherry+ Alice Coltrane.”

Sounds promising!

The Destroyed Room/Whatspace
Perron 58, Tilburg
5th of March 20.00

The famous Stukafest festival is coming to Tilburg for the first time on the 24th of February. This festival takes place in student rooms in and around the city centre. In three rounds, you can see bands, comedy, theatre and film in a very different, intimate setting. Some of the musical acts you can see at Stukafest Tilburg are Rue Royale (Incubate 2009), Marlon Penn, Mathijs Leeuwis, Avant La Lettre and Lola Kite. There’s also a dance performance by United-C, comedy from the Amsterdams Kleinkunst Festival and the short movie Manitoba, which premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam this year.

Stukafest Tilburg ends with a legendary party in Studio with our final act, one of the best electronic pop artists around: Krause! After years in punkrock bands, Susanne Clermonts decided in 2006 to trade in the screaming guitars for raw electro. She’s an allround performer, writing and producing her own music. Krause has performed at Noorderslag, Eurosonic and the Amsterdam Dance Event. Recently she won an Interactive Award at Eurosonic for her videoclip I Want A Pony, made with footage from her fans screaming the title of the track.

You can get tickets for Stukafest Tilburg at the Sounds recordstore in the Nieuwlandstraat Tilburg. More info on the programme and prices can be found here: Stukafest
