Fear Falls Burning has recently resurrected but is already on its way back to its grave. The musical moniker behind FFB Dirk Serries has founded a new project in his ongoing search for the essence of his sound. Fear Falls Burning has fulfilled his mission with their last and concluding album Disorder of Roots. With the expand of their soundpallet with 3 drummers, electric bass and a vocalist Serries’ ultimate vision became complete.

Fear Falls Burning will return to the stage with one final assault. Instead of going for an all out ‘rock’ concert they chose for the balance between acoustic, electrified, intimate and overpowering. Paradox is a perfect fit for that setting and also served as a safe haven for them.

We’ve told you earlier before that this Thursday it’s our second edition of Incubate Scene Report. Now we’ve got a special announcement to make: Because Sleep Party People and Pinkunoizu is gonna play the same night in Tilburg, we decided, in collaboration with 013, that we are gonna mix both events and turn it into one free mini-festival.

The night from ISC: Groningen in Cul de Sac is not really gonna change. Still the cool bands from Groningen Wolvon and Earth Control are planned to play that evening. But now the good part; 013 decided to make the entrance of their concert with those cool Danish bands for free. And yes, because their both from Copenhagen we’re gonna turn in into an Incubate Scene Report: Copenhagen edition.

If you had read this Spotifriday from a couple of weeks ago you would know that Sleep Party People has got a new album: We Were Drifting On A Sad Song. That’s why the Danish bunny’s are coming back to the Netherlands and will play together with Pinkunoizu at 013 this Thursday.

“Twisted bunnies make beautiful alienating music” is what 3voor12 wrote about the gig that Sleep Party People gave at Paradox during Incu11. Also in Groningen last January, during Eurosonic, the guys, under leadership from Brian Batz, did make a big impression with their music where they are mixing shoegaze with dreampop.  Another Danish band that made quite an impression during Eurosonic was Pinkunoizu, another Incu11-artist who will play in Tilburg this Thursday. With a statement “Never come full circle, to move hazily in bended ellipses” describes probably perfectly what the band is doing and is standing for. American rock n roller Dan Sartain is confirmed for the following edition of Incubated. The lo-fi rockabilly back-to-basics troubadour toured as opening act with The Hives and White Stripes. Now he will perform together with fellow countryman Sic Alps.

Last friday we posted about the guitar drone project from Dirk Serries called Fear Falls Burning with his new release Disorder Of Root.  Today we’ve got some good news; we are gonna give away three copies of this release. The official release of Disorder of Root by Tonefloat Records marks the end of this guitar drone project. The record features the return of drummers Tim Bertilsson and Magnus Lindberg with the addition of third drummer Phil Petrocelli, electric bass player Frank Kimenai and vocalist Michiel Eikenaar. It is available on compact disc, mini-lp gatefold sleeve and a limited double 10″ gatefold on clear vinyl available here. In about two weeks there will be a new edition of our own Incubated. This evening, already the sixteenth time, there are two different bands playing; The Strange Boys and Woody & Paul. Tickets are still for sale for only €9,-. To get your tickets now, scroll down for the embeded store!

The core of the band The Strange Boys are the brothers Ryan and Philip Sambol. A few years ago they released their debut with the funny name ‘And Girls Club‘ where they get a little help from the now deceased Jay Reatard. Blogs as Pitchfork, NME and Tiny Mixtape were laudatory and released their second album, Be Brave, in 2010 and their third, Live Music, in 2011. Luckily they still got some time left to play at our Incubated-evening.

You wouldn’t say but the band Woody & Paul consists of four guys, instead of two. They’re from Eindhoven and play roots music. Maybe you will know Paul from his project Man From The South where I played at Incubate earlier before (go listen to the live recordings here). Now he and his three comrades are playing at the 5th of April at Incubated.

It will take a while but still we’d like to announce our first confirmation for Incubated 18. Cult favorites Harvey Milk will be hitting the stage of Paradox the 7th June, 2012. The band also plays ATP and Primevera the same tour.

Harvey Milk is an experimental rock/sludge band and active from 1992 – 1998, reformed in 2006. Best known for the ‘Life… The Best Game In Town’ album released in 2008. That was voted best album of the year by Rock-a-Rolla magazine and reached the top 20 best albums of the year 2008 on Metacritic although guitarist/vocalist Creston Spiers sees it as the band’s worst album. The British songwriter Puzzle Muteson who sings while playing on his finger picked guitar played at the last edition of Incubate in 2011. Muteson played in Paradox and the funny thing is that he returns to Paradox on the 14th of March as a special guest accompanying Lunapark. After you heard this you sure don’t want to miss it.

We already told you that for our 16th edition of Incubated we booked the Strange Boys. Now we got some more good news for this gig at the 5th of April; Woody & Paul will be playing as well!

Woody & Paul is a band from Eindhoven and playing for a while. Last autumn they released their fourth record (at our favorite record store Sounds) that received lots of positive criticism. One part of the band, Paul van Hulten, is also known from his project Man From The South and played earlier at Incubate. We are really looking forward to see this band play! You to? So Monday we posted the complete live show by Gary War on Incubated 12, yesterday R. Stevie Moore at Incubated 12 and today another new show. The fun doesn’t seem to end :-)

“I hope you’re all feeling festive and happy. So I can destroy it and make you feel miserable and depressed”. Enter Malcolm Middleton. The self-confessed arch-miserablist. And with song titles such as ‘We’re All Going To Die’, ‘The Whole World Has Gone To Fuck’ and ‘The Loneliest Night Of My Life Came Calling’ you know what you can expect. It’s a surprise then, that the music of this singer/songwriter and ex-member of Arab Strap is actually kinda uptempo. And that he is, although a bit shy, a very funny guy.

Those that missed the show on Incubated in Paradox, Tilburg – or those that want to hear it again – can now listen to it, because we just released the entire live-show on our Soundcloud!

He’s the king of DIY. With more than 300 cassettes released since the 60′s, he never made it to the charts. It turned him into a prophet in the independent scene. We booked R. Stevie Moore for Incubated 12 in Paradox, together with Harry Merry and Gary War (stream his entire set here!). The show was… well… err… how shall we call it… unconventional? Inimitable? Authentic? Uncompromising? Let’s call it a bizarre clash between music, performance art, spoken word, absurdism, pop music and Ariel Pink.

A sweaty ball of hair. That’s what Gary War looked like after finishing his show on the 12th edition Incubated. You can say what you want about him, but you can’t deny that he gave it all. His completely weirded-out feedback guitar strums, a programmed beat and completely blurred echo-y vocals made a psychedelic summer vibe on the winter day in Tilburg. This is music to close your eyes to and imagine you’re lying on a beach watching the sunset. Or maybe a summer day with a good spliff.

And we’re very happy that Gary War just confirmed that we’re allowed to release the audio for his show! So now you can eternally enjoy the psychedelic sounds of Gary War via our Soundcloud! You can find other artists there as well, such as that other Ariel Pink-protégé John Maus. And Dirty Beaches. And True Widow. And more.

But for now, enjoy the sounds and beats of Gary War!

Shining
There are more ‘Shining’ bands, so the bandname is mostly written as Shining (NO), since they’re from Norway. The purists say that you can’t call their music a combination of black-metal and jazz, although their last album is called ‘Blackjazz’. So we’ll say that their music is jazz-infected sexy industrial heavy metal at its most progressive.
The band debuted in 2005 with the wickedly titled ‘In The Kingdom Of Kitsch You Will Be A Monster’. After their 2007 release ‘Grindstone’, 2009’s release ‘Blackjazz’ meant their major break-through. They toured the world and the album hit the top 10 in the album charts in Norway.
Now we bring them back to The Netherlands for a one-off show in Paradox! A Benelux-exclusive!

Incubated 14 is this coming Thursday (2nd of February) and it’s quite an amazing edition. We have three acts on the bill, who all performed on Incubate before, The Caretaker, Library Tapes and Sleepingdog. The Caretaker is all about lost memories, amnesia and nostalgia to old times. Creating a deep beautiful, but sometimes sinister atmosphere he tries to take you back in your personal history through electronic ambient music. Pleasant memories, bad dreams, being alone in the dark, all these emotions overtake the listener. If you’ve seen the Kubrick movie ‘The Shining’, you will get an idea of the beautiful but disturbing feelings The Caretaker tries to evoke.

But Leyland Kirby doesn’t sit still. Next to releasing 3 EP’s under his own name, and aforementioned ‘An Empty Bliss…’-album, he made the score for the movie Patience (After Sebald) which had its release last week. All the more reasons to be attending Incubated 14!

The Swedish David Wenngren is Library Tapes, pioneer of post-classical/neoclassical piano music. Library Tapes started in 2003 with David Wenngren and Per Jardsell. Wenngren hadn’t even touched a key of a piano, let alone played the piano! But he practised and listened to great artists like Sylvian Chaveau and Goldmund and he developed his own style. After the first album Per Jerdsell went his own way and David Wenngren became Library Tapes. The sounds that Wenngren produces are like subtile field recordings, with scratching and ticking noises of old 78-RPM record. Library Tapes performed at this years Incubate Festival but a lot of people missed his performance because Glen Hansard played at the same time in the Natuurtheater. Now they’ve got another chance to see him perform as Library Tapes.

Third band on the bill is Sleepingdog. The band has two members Chantal Acda (Chacda) and Adam Wiltzie (Stars of the Lid, A Winged Victory for the Sullen). Chantal Acda has been performing as Sleepingdog since 2006 and in that same year she played at the ZXZW Festival (former name of Incubate). She worked on her first two albums with Adam Wiltzie and he became such an essential part of her music, that he became a member of the band. Sleepingdog is based on the fairy-like atmosphere of Iceland and goes beyond the limits of New-Folk and Folktronica.

Library Tapes is performing on the next edition of Incubated on February 2nd, in Paradox with Sleepingdog and The Caretaker. But in the mean-time David Wenngren isn’t chilling out. He is currently trying to make a crowdfunded album! The concept is simple: donate money and you get a piano-song (or just a part of it) named after you. Which is actually just really cool, isn’t it? We’ll let David explain the whole story:

“Okey, let’s try something new (?) here and see how it turns out. You can now buy your own piece of a long piano track that I will make. For 5 euro your piece will be named after you or someone you’d like to dedicate your piece to. You will also get to chose your own notes/chords that you would like me to play. Your piece will later be a part of a bigger composition. (or small if there’s just a few of you that thinks this is a funny idea…) You’ll get a download of your piece Your pieces will most likely be somewhere around 10-20 seconds each. Once i have all the finished notes/chords recorded i will arrange them into the longer finished composition anyou’ll also recive a download for that one.
All the individual pieces will be uploaded for streaming on bandcamp at www.librarytapes.bandcamp.com/album/i-made-it-for-you. You wil also be able to listen to the finished composition over there when it’s completed.

Without a doubt the highlight of ZXZW 2008 (yes, before we were even called Incubate. That long ago.) was Sun Ra Arkestra, who did up to six shows that week.
Sun Ra was one of the main innovators in jazz. The Arkestra is his future dream and his ancient body. It never was as popular as jazz’s best-known big bands, but it did have a steady following and was highly regarded in jazz circles. It appeared on “Saturday Night Live”, played a Central Park concert with Sonic Youth and was named best big band in Down Beat magazine’s critics poll five times. Sun Ra influenced the whole contemporary music scene and was a true independent mind.

Now, while we were digging through our archive, we found the recording of the Tuesday show in Paradox. It’s such a great show that we couldn’t keep it to ourselves. So here it is. The complete show. One of the six and the only one we could find. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

A new year and that means a new edition of Incubated! The 13th edition has two great acts on the bill: Malcolm Middleton and LUIK. Malcolm Middleton will perform a solo acoustic show with a lot of black humor. The Dutch indie-slowcore band LUIK will open for him tonight. A real treat don’t you think? Before Malcolm Middleton began making great solo albums, he was one of the main members of Arab Strap, together with Aidan Moffat.  His first post-Arab Strap album was called ‘A Brighter Beat‘ which got very good reviews. While the music began to sound a bit more optimistic, his lyrics were still very depressing, thus generating a schizophrenic record.  Malcolm Middleton is Malcolm Middleton and will always be Malcolm Middleton. A unique artist in every way.

LUIK is a band from Rotterdam, Holland and started in the summer of 2010. Lukas Dikker is leading the band and presents an indie-slowcore sound that result in ‘softly picked guitars, a pressing bass and whistling vocals.’ Their EP ‘Are You Lonesome Tonight’ came out last year, and their debut album OWLS is set to be released on the 13th of January, but you can purchase it at Incubated tomorrow night!

Two Pin Din is the electric guitar duo Wilf Plum and Andy Kerr. No drums. No bass. No muss. No fuss. Plum also performed with Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp on Incubate 2010, but he’s also a member of Naifu, Lem and Amsterdam Beat Club. You may know Kerr from No Means No. GW Sok is ex-The Ex frontman. As Two Pin Din & GW Sok, their music is barren. Just guitar and rhythmical poetry. But it makes for an inspiring listen. We just uploaded the stream to our Soundcloud.

We are very proud to announce a new band to our Incubated nights. The Austin, Texas-based band The Strange Boys will perform at Incubated 16 on April 5th, 2012 in Paradox!

The Strange Boys
It isn’t the first time that The Strange Boys will play in Tilburg. In 2010 they performed in 013 to promote their album ‘Be Brave‘. They even had a small hit with the same-titled song. People who were there, saw a ramshackly garage band give a mindblowing performance, with frontman Ryan Sambol completely loosing himself in the songs.
We’re almost 2 years further since then, and they have their third CD out: ‘Live Music‘. (That’s not a live record by the way.) On that album, they reserve a permanent role for country-music within their garagerocking vibes. It makes their sound  less punk, but it still has that raw pub-feel to it, with a notable role for the piano. If their debut was their boozing record, and ‘Be Brave’ was their trappist beer record, than ‘Live Music’ is their American Whiskey record. This is a band of youngsters growing older, with their own state of mind, firmly rooted in Texas. It’s also a band that keep developing their sound into something that’s completely their own.

On the 5th of January Incubated 13 is taking place and we wanted to let you know that this is going to be an epic edition. The evening will host the great Malcolm Middleton, who is performing a solo acoustic show full of black humor and the dutch indie-slowcore band LUIK. We hope to see you at the Paradox, Tilburg on the 5th of January and have a toast with us to celebrate the beginning of a great year!

Before Malcolm Middleton began making great solo albums, he was one of the main members of Arab Strap, together with Aidan Moffat. The highly influential Scottish indie rock band called it a day in 2006. Middleton: ‘It was a good time to call it a day. Unless there’s a definite need and desire for us to play, I don’t think we should ever get back together.’ He already made 2 solo albums then: ‘5:14 Fluoxytine Seagull Alcohol John Nicotine‘ and ‘Into The Woods‘ on which the songs still had a very sensible Arab Strap-feel.  Anyway, it was a logical step for Malcolm Middleton to start a solocareer from there on. His first post-Arab Strap album was called ‘A Brighter Beat‘ which got very good reviews. While the music began to sound a bit more optimistic, his lyrics were still very depressing, thus generating a schizofrenic record. 2008-follow-up ‘Sleight Of Heart‘ and ‘Waxing Gibbous’ (2009) continued on the set path: indierock with a wide range of instruments, full of self-loathing lyrics and black humor (his Christmas single was called ‘We’re All Going To Die’). Malcolm Middleton is Malcolm Middleton and will always be Malcolm Middleton. A unique artist in every way.

LUIK is a band from Rotterdam, Holland and started in the summer of 2010. They have played numerous club shows and festivals in the Netherlands and Belgium and they will be performing at Eurosonic Noorderslag 2012. Malcolm Middleton released three new tracks in the past month and released an album with his darkest, negative and depressing songs of the years 1994 – 2001, called ‘A Quarter Past Shite‘. LUIK’s debut album will be released in the beginning of 2012! So be prepared to hear some brand new songs from both acts! We like bands that are different. And Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp (OTMD) are different, to say the least. The Swiss band use everything from double bass drums to marimba. From guitars to fiddle. The effect was surreal but catchy, as they played in Paradox on Friday. One of the most dedicated bands to perform on Incubate, and that says something.
