The artistic practice of Tris Vonna-Michell (b. 1982, Rochford, UK) is an explosive mix of performance, installation, music, literature, slang and rhythm. It adds a new chapter in a long tradition of storytelling. In his performances he takes the audience on a mental and physical journey, in which objects in space get a deeper meaning, he combines heroic and les heroic moments and swifts links between far away geographical places and places not belonging to the same time era. In his high-speed storytelling style words and sentences change into a puzzling combination of rhythmic and abstract compositions. In the installation in which Vonna-Michell performances take place video projection, lyrics and objects are used as theatrical props for telling the story.

The English artist Matt Stokes (1973) makes work in which performance, music ans social engagement come together. His artistic practice is marked by anthropological research and an interest in events of informal movements theat bind people together. His work exists from intensive research and active collaboration with local communities, studying  the social and visual language of specific subcultures. Has has explored different genres of music, like Northern Soul, acid/ house and black metal, revealing music as a universal language to create fellowship and community. This often is presented in video and sculptural installations, sometime outside of the traditional gallery space.

In this new series we’ll feature some of the (free watchable) documentaries about Incubate artists we could find on the net. Next up in the series is an documentary about British punkrock legends Crass. Part of this legendary band were Steve Ignorant and Eve Libertine, who will be present during this years Incubate festival! Peter J Taylor, who we already know from playing in Action Beat (Incubate 2010), is coming back to Tilburg. In this new project he is looking for voluntary musicians to play his latest compositions. Although the music is not particularly hard to play, musicians will be asked to specially prepare their instruments and to follow written instructions. Musicians would also be required to use a tuner, distortion pedal and attend a short practice before the show.

Congestion as a living utopia
“The seventh chapter of Postcards from the Future is dedicated to the city-centre of Brussels and to one of its predominant populations, the car drivers and their vehicles. On 27 May between 19pm and 20pm, a giant traffic jam will block the Rue de Flandre completely. This congestion is staged with the participation of a sixty-fold cars and their drivers, inhabitants and shop owners of the street and half a dozen key institutions of Brussels’ mobility sector.”

“Realized in the framework of the Kunstenfestivaldesarts 011, this performance is a life size enactment of a science-fiction scenario inspired by a short story of the Argentinean writer Julio Cortazar (“L’Autoroute de Sud”, 1966), as well as by extreme traffic congestion scenes as they can be witnessed in certain large African cities, or more recently in China, where car drivers remain at times until several weeks stuck in their vehicles.”

“We imagine a future Brussels in which the density of vehicles has not ceased to increase and reaches its ultimate apex: the last car has been added to the traffic and the whole road network comes to a definitive halt, without any hope of turning back. In such a situation, how would the motorists react? How would the pedestrians react, the inhabitants, the shop owners react? What would we do with the useless cars which have lost their primary function as means of human mobility? Is a harmonious co-habitation with the traffic jam possible?”

“On 27 May, during one hour, the inhabitants, the users and businesses of the Rue de Flandre, joined by a long row of voluntary car drivers as well as by the festival’s audience will attempt the impossible: to make use of the traffic congestion as an unique opportunity for a re-invention of the city life, instead of considering it a pure calamity and to remain its passive victims.”

“Jonathan Meese was born in Tokyo. He attended Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg, 1995 — 1998. He is a self-proclaimed cultural exorcist and styles himself as a cult figure. His personal interests which inform his work are comic books, horror films, medieval crusades and outsider art. In his self-portraits, he exaggerates his real-life “wild-man” features. His paintings envision the future as a post-Armageddon landscape.”

Jonathan Meese – 20-4-2011 – 20.00 @Bourla, Antwerpen

The upcoming months MU in Eindhoven will feature a Francesca Gavin’ curated exposition called ‘The New Psychedelica’. This exposition features work from artists from all over the world including Jimmy Joe Roche (Incubate 2010), Daniel Keller/Nik Kosmos (AIDS-3d), Harm van den Dorpel, Paul B. Davis and Jim Drain. AIDS-3D:

AIDS-3D is Daniel Keller (1986) & Nik Kosmas (1985), two American artists who live and work in Berlin. The duo creates web-related installations and performances, which are often based on nothing more than a simple animated .gif file.

We’ve known AIDS-3D since they were involved in the exhibit ‘The Destroyed Room’ last year, which was created by Whatspace together with Incubate. These exhibits (in Tilburg and partly in Berlin) were both based on the eponymous work by Jeff Wall. Later on Sonic Youth also used this work for a cd-cover. AIDS-3D also contributed to a group exhibition called Don’t’ Worry, Be Happy, which was held in Rotterdam last year.

The New Psychedelica: 8 April – 5 June 2011

Located at the Warmoesstraat 139 in Amsterdam is gallery W139. W139 focusses on continuous production and presentation of contemporary art since 1979. Currently they’re hosting an exhibit called ‘We will never know for sure’. Tomorrow (!) 30th of March, Manon van Trier (who was one of the contenders of the New Jacks project at Incubate 2009) will have a performance there. ‘We will never know for sure’ is an exhibit from students of the Sandberg Institute in collaboration with curators Christina Li and Yael Messer.

For the ninth year in a row, the international dance and performance festival Something Raw will take place from February 15 to February 19 2011 in Amsterdam. The 5-day festival will feature ten different performances and can be combined over the course of the evening. Click on “read more” to see a few examples of what to expect at the festival!

Irina Müller’s “On pleasure and fear” will guide the audience through a trance in which physical, fearful responses will be unavoidable, only to switch the audience back into pleasureful moments again. “Palpitations, rapid breathing and full-body shakes” as they describe this themselves, will make this an intense experience.

Gaëtan Bulourde, who made his name with the controversial combining of a urinal and a bicycle wheel, will show the audience how everyday objects can be turned into art in his expo “Already Made”

Jolika Sudermann (Germany) and Alma Söderberg (Sweden) will enlighten us with the fascination about aspects of non-dictionary-language; the melodies, rhythms and moves used by people every day.

Rhys Chatham (ZXZW 2008) will give a workshop/masterclass and performance at WORM Rotterdam later this month. Chatham is a classically-trained composer from New York. After he got out of conservatory, he was a concert producer at a place in Soho called the Kitchen, Rhys founded the music program and produced people like Maryanne Amacher, Robert Ashley, Philip Glass, Meredith Monk, Pauline Oliveros, and Steve Reich on the avant garde side of things; and Brian Eno, Robert Fripp and Fred Frith on the alternative rock side of things.

After a number of years as a concert producer, he got tired of producing other people’s music. Rhys had heard an early concert of the Ramones and was inspired by it, so he picked up electric guitar and made a composition called GUITAR TRIO in 1976/77 which combined the minimalist tendencies within which he had been working with a rock instrumentation and musicians.

He was introduced to electronic music and composition by Morton Subotnick in the late 60s, and in the early seventies he studied composition with La Monte Young and played in Tony Conrad’s early group. These guys are, along with Terry Riley, the founders of American minimalism; so Guitar Trio is a bit like Tony Conrad meets the Ramones! Also note his influence on Glenn Branca and Sonic Youth as well!

The masterclass will exist of two days of rehearsing & theory about the pieces (Guitar Trio and The Out of Tune Guitar No. 4) plus the performance in WORM on an event that is called POPULAR NOISE FOR THE MASSES on March 20th.

Practical:
In order to play in the concert, each guitarist (and the bass player) must bring a digital tuner and an electric guitar (and it would be good if the bass player would take a bass). Drums will be provided by WORM.

People that don’t play any of these instruments but would love to join…ask us and we’ll discuss with Rhys if he can use such an instrument (so don’t forget to tell us which instrument you play).

Zoals je misschien wel weet inmiddels is de Oostenrijkse kunstenaar Hermann Nitsch de hoofdgast op Incubate 2009 op zoek naar een heleboel assistenten voor zijn Aktion op Zaterdag 19 september. Het is misschien verstandig om even in de materie te duiken en er goed over na te denken. Je moet beschikbaar zijn voor 1 of 2 repetities (woensdag 16 sept en vrijdag 18 sept) en het optreden en de instructies van Hermann Nitsch en zijn assistenten opvolgen. Er zijn 5 acteurs betrokken bij de Aktion, zij zullen voornamelijk het echt heftige werk doen, maar affiniteit met beeldende kunst en Aktionisme in het bijzonder is wel aan te raden. Wij zijn op zoek naar: (voormalig ZXZW). Ik ben nog

-10 assistenten algemeen: deze mensen helpen met aangeven ingrediënten Aktion, helpen opzetten, helpen kruizen en manden dragen en komen vrij dicht bij de echte Aktion.

-10 musici/assistenten: deze mensen zorgen voor de ‘soundtrack’ van de Aktion, gewapend met ratelaars, fluitjes en kleine trommeltjes maken zij doorlopend geluid op aanwijzingen van Hermann Nitsch. Deze mensen hoeven geen getrainde muzikanten te zijn…

-1 keyboard/synthesizer speler: liefst iemand die noten kan lezen.

-2 blazers (mag elke variant zijn):  ook hier: liefst mensen die noten kunnen lezen, maar vooral goed kunnen aanvoelen waar de situatie om vraagt en aanwijzingen van Nitsch opvolgen.

Deze Aktionen zijn tot in detail uitgeschreven, maar Nitsch houd wel van een beetje chaos, dus je hoeft niet bang te zijn dat je iets ‘fout’ doet of dingen niet meteen de eerste keer goed gaan. Ik hoor graag van je of je interesse hebt en in welke van de bovenstaande functies dat dan zou zijn. Zeker voor de studerenden/net afgestudeerden onder ons is het natuurlijk bijzonder interessant om zo’n Aktion op je CV te kunnen zetten, maar eigenlijk voor iedereen zal het een unieke ervaring zijn!

Thursday 17 September around 16:00 the official opening of Incubate (yeah, the festival is than already five days in action, but that’s how official openings work, apparently) will take place in the form of Whatnight #2 @ Duvelhok. Vaast Colson and Dennis Tyfus were invited by Whatspace for this event. They will do two performances that showcase their anarchistic, and free form mode of work.

The day after Incubate they will drive around Tilburg giving a voice to their feelings of mourning because this year’s festival has come to an end.

We can’t wait!

In September Hermann Nitsch is coming to Incubate in Tilburg, The Netherlands. Most of you know that already, but are not sure if, especially the Aktion itself, that is something for you.

Maybe Nitsch is not (yet) your cup of tea, but are interested in art that exists in the vicinity of boundaries. ‘Ketchup’ by Martynka Wawrzyniak might be your step towards a big thing like Nitsch. In this work she gave children water guns filled with ketchup and let them shoot her with this red stuff against a white background. It’s a bit like a Nitsch Aktion in our eyes. But a bit mpore innocent.

Franko B will perform Wednesday 16 September in De NWE Vorst

Franko B has recently decided to discontinue bleeding in performance, which he used to do before. In ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’, his latest performance work in progress, Franko B’s body is presented naked and unpainted, leaving his many tattoos uncovered, seated on a raised plinth or altar. The audience is allowed time to look at his body, to approach it as a sculptural form. ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’ continues his practical research into the politics of performance, in new and unexpected ways.

Franko B comes to Tilburg as one of the artsts that were influenced by Hermann Nitsch‘s work.

Hermann Nitsch will be central guest at Incubate 2009.

Blood. Horror. Filth. Beauty? Rationality? Education? These are some of the ingredients the Austrian artist Hermann Nitsch uses and some of the questions his work raises. Highly controversial for some, highly regarded by others; Nitsch is someone you need to have an opinion on. Not to have one is not possible once you’ve seen the work of one of the instigators of performance art. Incubate gives you the opportunity to see one of the most important artists that influenced performance art at work on his actions, music and philosophy.

Surrounding this special guest, there will be a program with artists that were influenced by this artistic innovator.

Something like  Travolta’s with Brian Wilson or The Spades with Johnny Thunders.

Wadruna will play Saturday 19 September at the Bockenreyder Inn exclusively.

Wardruna, a special folk project of Einar ‘Kvitrafn’ Selvik (Jotunspor and ex-Gorgoroth), creates ritualistic folk music with traditional instruments such as antlers and wooden logs, inspired by old runes. Fire, water, stones, and branches are also used.

The natural atmosphere that flows out of the speakers is thick, peaceful and transforms any room in no time into an old pagan ritual site complete with trees, fires and druids. With the mighty Gaahl of God Seed (also ex-Gorgoroth) on vocals.

Wardruna’s show will be set apart from the busy and rushing city. The setting in which they will perform is found around a rural inn called ‘In den Bockenreyder’.

‘In den Bockenreyder’ lends its name from a malicious horde called De Bokkenrijders (The Buckriders: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckriders ). They roamed the lands in the 18th century that are now the borders of the nation states Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. Their raids were aimed at farmers and monasteries in the region. The story goes they made a pact with the devil and rode at night on bucks.
There is an eyewitness that claimed that the oaths were taken while denouncing of God and vowing obedience to the devil (symbolized by a cut-off hand holding a candle) with the middle finger and the index finger pointed upwards, as well as the thumb.

One of the places these Bokkenrijders repeatedly showed up was at Landgoed de Utrecht (Utrecht Estate), a little south of a little village called Esbeek. On these 2700 acres of land the inn ‘In den Bockenreyder’ is situated. The fascination of the Bokkenrijders horde for the occult, mysticism and magic is the reason Incubate will present Wardruna on that historic site. One of the aims of this concert is to get people in contact with the historic landscape through the sounds and performance of Wardruna.

The programme:
- The public will be taken to the special Wardruna performance by coaches from Tilburg.
- At the inn they can eat and drink in style.
- When the sun begins to set the visitors are led to an grandstand outside.
While darkness falls, torches light the site. Wardruna performs, the sun will set and the atmosphere will be filled with the visuals and sounds that Wardruna stands for.
-After the concert the visitors will be brought back to the city on the same way that they left it, by bus.

This very special performance of Wardruna will be open for everyone with a Incubate 2009 dayticket for Saturday and of course all Incubate 2009 passepartouts. The bus ride will cost a very small additional amount of money.
