href="http://www.motelmozaique.nl/" target="_blank">Motel Mozaique is gonna start. With a lot of different performances, arts & bands it’s hard to choose what you have to see. Of course we like headliners like Patrick Watson, The Antlers and Apparat band but we like to give you some tips of acts that still have to prove themselves.

Light Asylum
Before this duo from Brooklyn (where else?!) started playing music together the frontwoman Shannon Funchess already gained some experiences on stage; she sang as a background singer from bands as TV On The Radio, !!! and LCD Soundsystem. After their first EP In Tension we are really looking forward to the debut of Light Asylum which is scheduled for the first of May. The first song of the album Shallow Tears is already listenable and sounds familiar to the EP: Dark, synth-wave and, what Pitchfork said “They sound like warriors sent from the future”

Great Mountain Fire
It’s weird to hear that the debut of the Belgian band Great Mountain Fire, Canopy, didn’t get a lot of attention when they released it in August. Luckily the band gets little by little finally what they deserve. You could say that we heard this kind of music the last couple of years before, you could also say that it was a long ago that we sing-a-long so easily with songs of a band from Bruxelles.

Jameszoo (Live)
Mitchell van Dinther aka Jameszoo isn’t an unknown person for us, he played at the opening of New Jacks with Incubate last year. A lot of things changed since then; he played at festivals like Eurosonic and 5 Days Off. Also musically he has changed; now is playing live with jazz piano player Gideon Van Gelder. As a prelude for his debut album, which is scheduled for this fall, he released in February his EP Guanyin Psittacines full with tropical beats floating between jazz and electronic hiphop.

120 Days
You can’t call the Norwegian guys from 120 Days hard workers. They started playing together in 2001 and finally after 5 years, in 2006, they released their self titled debut. Now after more than 5 years after their debut their back with another self titled album, we wrote about them earlier in the Spotifriday of week 10. Luckily the five years were completely worth it; the music of their new record sounds really different and more of these times. Highlight; Almost 10 minutes of dancing with instrumental song Dahle Disco.

Soap&Skin
We end this list our favorite new Motel Mozaique artist with another old Incubate-artist; Soap&Skin. When the Austrian girl Anja Plaschg came to our festival in 2009 her debut Lovetune For Vacuum was just released. The follow-up is the mini album Narrow; a wider album with songs instead of only in English and German, Voyage Voyage, which is probably one the finest songs of this album, is in French. For this gig in Rotterdam she is gonna play with an ensemble, which is pretty exciting.

Frank Kimenai is in Austin, Texas right now where is visiting the SXSW festival. He is so kind to let us know what we are missing up there. Today: Report of day one.

SXSW: Day one, Tuesday, March 13

After an exhausting travel of about 16 hours in total, thanks to missing connections in Houston, I arrived in Austin, Tx once again, for the fifth SXSW festival I’m witnessing. My SXSW lustrum is a fact. Very much looking forward to Austin and all it’s beauty and craziness the next couple of days. As always, I’m staying over at my friends from the bands Black Earth and Scorpion Child, that I’ve met 7 (I’m getting old) years ago during my first visit to the festival with my band The Spades.

This year, I came prepared. Since SXSW is such a humongous, and it’s pretty much useless to just walk around and see if you meet some interesting people and bands, I made quite an elaborate schedule, both meeting and bands I want to see. What striked me while doing so, is that the festival moved a day forward. Official showcases already start Tuesday, instead of the regular Wednesday. Guess the interactive part and the music part of the festival are merging together even more.

After a good night rest, I got my bicycle ready. I keep telling everybody, and I’ll say it again; A bicycle is the ideal way to move yourself during this festival. It’s getting bigger and more widespread every year, and besides good exercise, it will keep you flexible and let’s you travel effectively in the downtown area. And it’s also just good fun riding a bike in Austin. Just the downhill stretch from South Congress to the river makes it all worth it.

I cycled into the city, got my badge and registered for the Springsteen draw. Bruce Springsteen is this years keynote speaker at the SXSW conference, and he’s doing a small show for selected people somewhere in a small venue. You can only enter if you are selected from the draw. I’ll get an email Thursday morning if I’m in, so fingers crossed until that time. I walked around in the trade show area of the convention centre a bit as well. Lot’s of big cities that are showing off their music / cultural scene, and lots of companies trying to sell you their latest (useless, most of the time) product. I sincerely doubt if being part of the trade show makes any sense, but maybe somebody can prove me otherwise?

After that, I cycled around a bit in the downtown area to look around, and I already noticed what I thought was going to happen last year: every vacant parking lot is being used to build massive stages, outdoor venues, even more tents and other structures. The city take-over is definitely a fact, once more, and it’s getting bigger every year. There were one or two vacant parking lots still available, giving the signs. Guess it’s big business to rent out your empty lot during the festival.

I went to End of an Ear records on South 1st street real quick, before my meeting with the nice people of Sacred Bones Records. End of an Ear is my favorite record store in Austin, it’s not the biggest, but their collection is amazing, and it’s really well priced too. Got myself some CCR, Allman Bros, Townes van Zandt, Disappears and The Jam vinyls. Great stuff, great deal. Drop by there, if you are ever in the neighbourhood. It’s worth it.

Next up, meeting with the Sacred Bones people. Incubate is setting up a residence project for the 2012 festival with them. They will be curating a venue for two days, with a lot of their US bands playing, and some European bands as well. But more on that in the next few weeks. We met at some coffee bar, and had a really cool conversation about running independent organisations such as Incubate or Sacred Bones. It’s good to hear that in the age of quick money and blog hypes, Sacred Bones is thriving by working on sustainable relationships with their bands, nurturing them from the first 7” onward to the all the releases afterwards, and growing together with their bands. Their distinct artwork and great choice of bands on their roster, makes them one of the best and most consistent labels in the world for me. Can’t wait to see their bands in september.

After cycling around a bit more, I went to my favorite shelter from the SXSW madness, the Sidebar on East 7th street. A nice and quite bar, where you can sit down, drink a beer, check your email and mind your own business. A rarity in downtown Austin in these days. Next up, meeting with Yvonne and Ula from Tilburg, and the people from Century Media, where Ula used to work. Free margarita and free beer from some internet social start-up company mixing Facebook, Twitter, fans anc bands. Concept sounded like shit, but the free margarita was nice. Another sign that interactive and music part of the festival are merging more and more.

Around 21.30 it was time to see the first band of the festival, which was Sun Araw at the Mohawk. There was some Pitchfork party going on, it was filled with annoying people who just came to party, and didn’t really care about the band. Too bad. Good thing was bumping into Alfred (Daedelus). We did a project with him during the last Incubate festival, he recorded rehearsals from conservatory students in Tilburg, and remixed them. Turned out really great. It was good seeing him again, and he once more stated how good of a time he had during the festival. That’s always good to hear.

After a bit of Sun Araw (which was somewhat disappointing, not that interesting) I went to a venue called the Hotel Vegas which is on the East Side of Austin where I never been before. When I was cycling up there, I was amazed by the sight of that part of town. It used to be a ghost town with empty lots and vacant buildings, but within a year, it turned into a new downtown area with stores, bars, restaurants and venues. Really cool. I went to the Frenchy Smith showcase, where Dax Riggs, former member of Acid Bath, was playing. He had a bluesy garage trio, which was pretty ok. He’s a great singer, but the songs weren’t good enough. Next up was my friend Shawn’s band, Scorpion Child. Total ‘70’s rock worship, with a really good singer, reminding me of Glenn Hughes and Robert Plant. Not hip at all, but a really, really good band, giving an awesome live performance, delivering heavy ‘70’s and early eighties rock in the vein of Cactus, Led Zep, Rainbow, and early Iron Maiden. Vintage without sounding outdated. Check them out (and I’m not saying that because they are my friends).

After hanging out with friends and acquaintances at the patio of the Vegas Hotel, the closing act of the evening ware the local heroes of …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead. They keep changing the band’s line-up, it was completely different from the last time when I saw them (3 years ago). They had a Phil Lynott look-a-like on bass, and played a mean and tight hardcore show. The cool thing about them is that they are all multi-instrumentalist, and they keep changing instruments, without getting to pretentious. It also struck me for the first time, that the must have been of influence on bands like At The Drive-In. I hear a lot of elements in their music that come directly from the T.O.D. approach.

When their show was done, we went to an afterparty at the house of the Trail Of Dead-singer. Good fun, lot of nice people, and a nice way to end the first, somewhat quite evening of SXSW 2012. The madness starts Wednesday. Can’t wait.

New project by former-editors of Altered Zones: Ad-Hoc

Culture

ad hoc

altered zones

dummy

Ford & Lopatin

international tapes

james leyland kirby

kickstarter

liturgy

Neon Indian

no fear of pop

pitchfork

The Caretaker

The Rings Of Saturn‘, about his long hike throughout East Anglia. In the film, Sebald’s path is being documented but, just like in the novel, the images of the landscape and the places the author encountered, lead to reflections. It’s not just about the walk, it’s a journey along the horrors of the 20th century. Furthermore, 20 artists – writers, painters, theatre directors, etcetera – tell about the impact the work of Sebald had on their own lives. Here’s a trailer:
The band Ancients have been drifting under the surface for quite a while now, probably held back by the release of the second album of *shels, earlier this year. Now their first 2 tracks are released on their bandcamp and they sound very promising. It brings the expectations even higher, because with ex-members of Crydebris and Rinoa and with Mehdi Safa (*shels/ex-Mahumodo) we were already looking forward to what these guys had to bring to the table. It’s a sure shot for fans of above-mentioned bands: their heavy postrock builds up to an epicly beautiful ending.

<iframe

Somewhere dwelling between black-, heavy- and progressive metal, it’s a tasty meal for almost every metalhead. Ridiculously enough, these guys aren’t signed to a label yet, and bring their debut album ‘Dwellings’ to the masses with pure <a

MCDE’s output is often described as deep house, and there’s a long tradition of deep house producers simply borrowing polite brass and woodwind arrangements from old jazz records and slapping them on top of featureless beats. The results are usually bland, sometimes plain banal. An hour’s worth of the stuff, all that polite chugging and all those waxy saxophones, tends to be good for napping but not much else.”

Listen to the DJ Kicks exclusive track ‘L.O.V.E.’ below here. And it’s worth every penny of it. 30.000 people standing in the field. Jumping. Singing. I’ve never felt so, uh, individual, before. I’m singing every word and every note re-activates our private history. I’ve never felt to be part of a collective before.

Jarvis Cocker is the first person that dedicates a song to the students: ‘As an outsider it’s difficult to judge situations in other countries. But shooting at people is wrong.’

After the concert confusion is kicking in again. It’s great to see so many people watching Battles delivering an intense performance. But a big banner on the stage is insulting me.

‘Ray Ban: Can’t Hide’. Fuck of. Those students could not hide. Most of the visitors are using the Ray Bans not to hide for the sun, but to hide their drug popping eyes for the outside world. Everyone is constantly looking at the screen. But the revolution will not be televised or socialized today. There is there. And here is here. This gated community. The disconnection from the outside world. In psychology it’s called the bystander effect. The greater the number of bystanders, the less likely it is that any one of them will help. This happens because as the number of bystanders increases, any given bystander is less likely to notice the incident, less likely to interpret the incident as a problem, and less likely to assume responsibility for taking action.

Why am I here? A lot of my favorite artists are playing and it’s an exciting place to be and for me it’s the only place to be. I’m a part of it cause it’s my history and a future that’s exciting. A new market has been created for kids like me. And we built it ourselves. Internet is the connection and cheap flights are connecting us in real life.

Pitchfork, the weblog from the windy city, is putting the win back into indie. It’s creating a global scene of branded festivals and branded blogs, promoting niche bands like The Books, niche genres like noise-pop and rewriting cultural history with re-appreciating band like Neutral Milk Hotel.

On one hand there’s the overpaid indie comeback nostalgia with bands like Pulp. On the other hand there are hype bands like Odd Future, booming like new media firms. Expensive like new media firms. And also with no business models and no return on investment. Just like new media firms. A band like Moon Duo gets more audience during this gig then during the whole European tour. Their festival fee makes it possible to do this whole European tour. Which is great, cause Primavera is important for the living of artists. And for their fans.

In the old days you had to produce standardized products or services and sell it with standardized marketing. Now you have to produce niche products or services and market it in the nices.

We’ve created our own niches. Just like big companies like eBay and Amazon.com knew how to monetize those niches, the monetizing of our scene also just started. Not search and destroy like Iggy did. Just search is the new keyword. Search the web for unique content. And share it with your friends. Accelerate it.

It reminds me of Lonely Planet where everyone shares the same authentic spot. Collectively we’re feeling so individual.

We were kids that were living in provincial towns, not able to be part of the action back then. We were the only indie kids in town and we all want to pay to collectively relive our individual history right now. Our history is expensive but we can afford it now. And of course the former stars want to cash in their underground credibility. Good for us and good for them.

Is indie becoming a fixed style, like punk did and like alternative did? What would be the ethics and aesthetics of the new indie, then? Where’s the new Seattle and who’s the new Malcolm McLaren. Or is it more a scene based on network dynamics, where people and places are not that important any more? Where the speed and connectedness of the network only matter.

Rock Around The Clock and the youth culture revolutions of last century started on the big screen. Commodified pop culture like Prince, Michael Jackson and Madonna went stadium size with the TV screen of MTV. Now a new screenager revolution is happening. On the screens of our generation. On the screens where this piece is written on.

It’s got nothing to do with great balls of fire. We carry our smartphones close to our balls. It’s got noting to do with commodified black music for the white market. iPods are white and Blackberries are black.

Last century the perception of cutting edge culture took the ride from Adorno to Bourdieu to Florida. First there was the distinctiveness. Then there was distinction. Now culture is only a utility for marketeers and for city developers. We’re making the difference for gentrification, which is good for real estate development. We are a utility for brand developers. They don’t prescribe from within but describe from without. Not with theory but with statistics.

But take a look at how we look. Everyone looks so… Normal. Just like at a regular day at the office. Look at what we want. We only want something so normal. Like going to a festival that does not sell more tickets then the venue like Primavera does.

We are not a generation of bands but a targetted audience for brands. There are no ubiquitous trends, like black is the new black, like the holy, holy Nike Air Jordan, like Vision Street Wear, like in the old days when you were craving for the new Dr. Dre album or Transmat 12”. The only like is the Facebook like button. There are no album releases any more, only album leaks. I’m not pessimistic. I’m loving the way we can truly establish a new voice. Like our teachers told us: revolution is in the air.

Dictators needed mass media. Libertarians use social media. We can become our own media, and the new media isn’t Murdoch that fucked up Myspace. Our Mark Zuckerbergs come from within. So fuck of with your Adidas branding and Jagermeister branding and Vice hipster hysteria for festivals. Maybe we must choose more for ourselves. No major labels.

Our focus is not on the external world of scenes and movements. On being a mod or a punk or a hippie. Not the scene and the looks are the focal point of future youth movements. Our behavior, our IRL cookies, are worth shitloads of money. It’s not the dynamic look any more, but the vision on our dynamics. Not behaving towards our customers, but customer behavior itself.

If you like it or not: you are trending topics. Powered by web statistics marketing moguls that saw something fuzzy is buzzing in the blogosphere. The stuff selling youth is digging it. The stuff digging youth is selling it. So u gotta be there to, put it in oldspeak, be, uh, square.

Hipster Pitchforkbands like Animal Collective, Odd Future and Girl Talk are the place where u gotta be if you wanna stay in touch. Not staying in touch in a telegram or newspaper or phonecall way. More in a Twitter or Facebook way. So the brands are here at the Primavera Sound San Miguel Ray Ban Adidas Jack Daniels Smint Jagermeister Coca Cola ATP Rockdelux Pitchfork Vice festival. Bringing bands in branded content. You would almost forget that bands and audiences built this scene. The sponsors are taking over, claiming it for themselves.

At first hand sight Primavera looks like a analog blogosphere. Statistics driven full of Pitchfork pretenders. You can only get drink tickets with a civilized barcode quick id card. So the beer sponsor can get your offline statistics. When do you buy a beer, and how much do you spend. Maybe they use it. Maybe they sell it. Who knows.

Brands are queuing for us. And we cue for the toilet, cause they actually don’t give any shit about us. If you can take care for your sponsors, maybe you can also take care about our shit and put enough toilet paper in the toilets.

Pulp are one of the most anticipated acts of the festival. I’ve missed them in a small venue in Amsterdam in 1995 cause my parents didn’t let me. Now it’s their reunion. Jarvis Cocker was one of the last true voices in pop music. Cynical. Witty. Chroniquer in a Ray Davies kind of way.

He also sang ‘Jesus told me to beware of 33. It was not a easy year for me.’ Am I too cynical? Is this the age where you lose touch with youth culture? Or is youth culture something for the oldies singing about times that are a-changing?

Maybe traditional youth culture does not exist any more. Maybe cutting edge culture, the old avant-garde, does not exist any more. Maybe everything turned pop. Making niches so expensive in a cheap way.

I believe in the power of the market, always reinventing itself. I also firmly believe in the power of youth culture, always reinventing itself. Maybe Primavera is a tipping point. It’s embodying a global festival disconnected from the local scenes. Like every blog is blogging the same there is no real identity. It’s only selling, not connecting. This festival could be everywhere. I’m missing engagement with local artists and local issues. Outside a revolution is happening. Let’s join!

[Watch] ‘Hilvarenbeek’ – A film by Dan Deacon and Jimmy Joe Roche

Incubate

biological farm

dan deacon

Hilvarenbeek

IFC

incubate 2010

JIMMY JOE ROCHE

pitchfork

stereogum

t Schop

tilburg

watch
<guid

A very hard task, which they did very well, when we talk about content.

The list however is ‘surprising’ too say the least. We cannot find ourselves agreeing to their top twenty of the 2000′s. However they did a nice job and did not choose the hits or most famous songs as their best. And that’s very cool in our opinion, even if we do not agree with them.

Anyway, Generation Bass. A few months ago, Joker was just one mysterious name among many that got kicked around dance music message boards. These days, he’s still a pretty mysterious figure, but his profile has significantly risen, thanks to a number of inventive singles: “Gully Brook Lane”, “Digidesign”, the landmark “Purple City”.
Joker’s take on dubstep is slinkier and more melodic than those of his subwoofer-wrecking contemporaries. Though his tracks annihilate bass bins with the best of them, they make for shockingly rewarding office earbud listening. There’s a certain approachability to his 80s videogame textures and Justice-esque discordant synths.
So who is Joker? It turns out that he’s a 20-year-old kid from Bristol who doesn’t much like talking to foreign journalists on the phone and who listens to tons of 80s synth-funk. Pitchfork recently caught up with Joker and found him to be a man of few words. <a
