Oregon’ doom/sludge trio YOB (who are set to play at Incubate 2011) have a new track up for listening over at Stereogum. Being the opening track for their new album, “Prepare the Ground” gives a good taste of what’s yet to come! Inspired by the annual Roadburn festival, Anne Korten made pictures of the bearded attendees of the festival this year. These are being exhibited throughout June at Ekko in Utrecht on special silkscreens and etchings. The grand opening will take place this Saturday on June 4th. All of the pictures are available in a limited edition book as well, which can be bought at the exhibition! The exhibition is free; for more information check out the Ekko website.

Dark Castle crossing the ocean for a tour with YOB and Kongh soon and are also playing at Incubate! Perhaps you’ve already checked out this two-piece brutality tank at Roadburn 2010, yet you can see them again this September. And they will be back with a new album on Profound Lore! Perhaps one of the most busy men in the music industry nowadays is one half of Sunn O)))/KTL (see pic), Stephen O’Malley. After playing and curating Roadburn two weeks ago, he announced that he will be curating a sub label as well. The label Editions Mego will now have a curated sublabel by Stephen called Ideologic Organ, focussing on vinyl/digital releases. But don’t expect the usual dooms ‘n drones, this sublabel focusses on acoustic music! The first two releases are by Moscow’s vocal ensemble and Phurpa and violist Eywind Kang with vocalist Jessika Kenney (see movie below).

With the Roadburn 2011 festival just around the corner (tomorrow!!), we have selected some of the wisest men in the music business to recommend you their favorites! This is the fifth and last part in a five part series. Maarten Koehorst from the record store Sounds in Tilburg has selected his 3 must-see acts for the festival!

Winterfylleth will start of early on the Thursday of Roadburn, yet they have every potential to become one of the highlights of the festival. With one of Roadburn’s favorite bands, Wolves In The Throne Room, being absent this year, someone has to fill their shoes and Winterfylleth will certainly do so. Expect atmospheric black metal with an English Anglo-Saxon lyrical themes. The sun may be shining outside, but the Green Room will bleed black!

Blending black metal with noise and drone elements, the female-fronted two-piece Menace Ruine is certainly a must-see. They are currently on tour with Aluk Todolo (Incubate 2009), but have also supported the likes of Watain. Make sure you also head over to the merch tables in the V39 if they have their limited EP on Luchtrat Recordings with them (label of the singer of Alkerdeel!)

The six-piece Rwake have been around since 1996 but haven’t made it on European soil that much. Those fortunate to see their show at Hellfest last year, where they flew in just for one show, have every reason to believe this is a band you cannot miss out on at Roadburn! Rwake produces the absolute bleakest of the bleakest sludge around and bring some filthy negativity to the attendees of Roadburn. Highly recommended!

Gearing up for Roadburn 2011 putting some recommendations in writing isn’t the hard part, narrowing it down to three surely is gruesome. First of all it would be more than foolish to ignore the offerings and cues of curators Sunn O))): http://3voor12.vpro.nl/artikelen/artikel/44622992 (in Dutch). Secondly: after seeing the Black Mountain show @ Incubate 2010 I must also recommend the afterburner with apart from the Canadian psychrockers the simmering Samsara Blues Experiment (soothing the frustration that Roadburn ends there) and two excellent Dutch stonerbands: The Machine and Sungrazer.

Swans
Like curators and doom masters Sunn O))) the group of Michael Gira tends to deliver a physically pounding experience on stage. Seeing the reunited Swans perform at last year’s Le Guess Who? festival I suddenly understood what the ‘noise’ was about. How about originating in the New York postpunk scene of the eighties, progressing through the end of the nineties and thus influencing tons of doom metal, noise, drones and sludge disciples, splitting up, reuniting more than twelve years later in 2010 and still kicking you in the gut, droning your intestines out and keep that up for a thoroughly griping ninety minutes. Well how about that? Certainly they weren’t fucking you about when they put this disclaimer on their site: SWANS ARE NOT DEAD.

Black Math Horseman
I really wanted to see Black Math Horseman last year, but I was robbed of both opportunities by one puffing Islandic volcano. This year they’re back and I definitely won’t be denied their full-on stoner grooving and postmetal riffing psychedelic experience. Producer Scott Reeder (Kyuss/The Obsessed) did some magic on the 2009 recording Wyllt, which is due for a follow-up. Did I mention they have amazing artwork including nice Griffins (!) and a really good looking female singer/bassplayer up their sleeves? More importantly: Sera Timms’ brutal classic vocals and screams give the LA foursome a dark and frightening twist. I’ll definitely start my Roadburn saturday deeply immersed in an hour of BMH.

Ufomammut
Italian stoner giants Ufomammut have rocked Roadburn before, which is a good sign ofcourse. Another good sign is that the people of Roadburn picked their Eve as ‘Roadburn Album of the Year’. Honouring that choice Ufomammut plays the album in its entirety in one and a half hour set at the Midi Theatre. The Italian trio specialize in heavy sluggish stoner and sludge metal (the ‘mammut’ or mammoth piece) with psychedelic tendencies and bizarre sounds (‘ufo’ stylee). They do have possibly the best artwork and videoshow to accompany them, since two of the member are the masterminds behind the Malleus Rock Art Lab (www.malleusdelic.com) Together that should guarantee a intense, very memorable spacetrip, after which there’s still time remaining to finish of the Roadburn saturday with some cruel sounds from Swans or Gates of Slumber.

Aluk Todolo
A recommendation of Sunn O)))’s Stephen O’Malley which seized me by the throat from the very first minute. I understood it to be satanic noiserock from the gutters of Paris (they share a rehearsal space with O’Malley) but there’s something way more sinister and utterly captivating going on here. But what? The band specializes in instrumental occult rock and consists of members of black metalbands Diamatregon and Vediog Svaor.

With the Roadburn 2011 festival just around the corner (this thursday already!), we have selected some of the wisest men in the music business to recommend you their favorites! This is the third part in a five part series. And from Tijs we head to Thijs from Kindamuzik for his three highly recommended must-see acts at Roadburn. Despite some very strong competition, such as last year’s unfortunate Eyjafjallajökull victims Candlemass and their fellow Swedes Count Raven (who boast the hands-down best ever Ozzy soundalike), my trad doom pick for Roadburn 2011 has gotta be the mighty Pentagram. Celebrating their 40th anniversary as a band this year, Pentagram has recently welcomed Relentless-era axe man Victor Griffin back into the fold. Griffin played Roadburn last year with Pentagram ‘prequel’ Death Row, but that was a bit like seeing, oh I don’t know,  Kyuss without Josh Homme? No Pentagram classic is complete without the bug eyed grandaddy of American doom metal Bobby Liebling, who could give Ozzy a run for his money in the acid geezer department. Now pushing sixty and allegedly sober, Sir Bobby proved he can still deliver the gobbledygook goods with Pentagram’s long awaited Dutch live debut a couple of years ago at 013. A definite must-see.

Much to my surprise, Roadburn 2011 even caters to my ever present need for some good ol’ country music. Besides the brilliant American Gothic doomtwang of both Wovenhand and Earth, Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter is an especially inspired addition to this year’s line-up. Sykes is a fille sourire extraordinaire, with the husky voice of Marianne Faithful, the looks of Cosmic American Music-era Emmylou Harris and a gorgeous SunnO))) collab already under her belt. Musically Sykes and her Hereafter bring the druggy country noir haze like Neko Case taking the Cowboy Junkies for a Walkabout. I already saw this merry bunch of narcobillies open for Martha Wainwright once (see below) and I’m pretty, ehm, siked to see how they’ll fare at Roadburn, sandwiched between überheavy hitters like Winter and Hooded Menace.

I, for one, am looking as much forward to Tilburg’s other big annual metal extravaganza Neurotic Deathfest (Autopsy! Magrudergrind! Prostitute Disfigurement!) as I am to Roadburn, and Grave Miasma are sure to get me even more pumped up for the impending NDF onslaught at the end of this month. Similar to the blackened occult avant-New Wave of Old School Death Metal of current kvlt faves Portal, Vasaeleth and Teitanblood, 100% Fenriz approved Grave Miasma keep things nice and murky, valuing atmosphere over sheer brutality without being pussies about it. And off course, 013′s Bat Cave is the perfect venue for these London dungeon dwellers. For some more fine cavernous mega-death at Roadburn, keep your eyes and invisible oranges peeled for epic Finnish doomdeathsters Hooded Menace and (at Sunday’s Afterburner) Japanese Autopsy worshipping gravemongers Coffins. The dungeons are calling!

In this part, Tijs Heesterbeek has recommended his favorites! Does his name sound familiar to you? He was our marketing chief at Incubate and now for Effenaar in Eindhoven!

Quest for Fire: All the hip, new bands embracing the shoegaze craze (there: I just created a new word: the shoecraze!) have listened closely to bands like My Bloody Valentine, Ride and The Jesus & Mary Chain. That’s OK. They’re great bands. But a lot of those hipsters forget one defining band: The English psychedelic rockers of Spacemen 3. All but one: Quest for Fire is a fourpiece from Canada who have just released their second album Lights From Paradise. It consists of eight songs heavily inspired by sixties psychedelic nuggets, seventies krautrock and eighties shoegaze. Like the mighty fuzz of Spacemen 3. Their release on TeePee already is one of my personal favorites of 2011.

Dragontears: Lorenzo Woodrose and I started off on the wrong foot. I saw his former band Baby Woodrose a couple of times, but I always thought he was just a cheap knockoff of Monster Magnet and Dave Wyndorf. But while Dave Wyndorf wasn’t the rockgod he pretended to be (Dave Wyndorf having an overdose and not dying is like Charlie Sheen having an overdose and… well… dying), Lorenzo recorded another album with his other band Dragontears. The result came out through the mighty Bad Afro Records at the end of 2010 and was called Turn On Tune In Fuck Off!! (another drug-metaphor, did Lorenzo try to make something clear to his master?). The result is pretty astonishing: It’s a rollercoaster ride between Led Zep, 13th Floor Elevators and… Monster Magnet. But the kind of Monster Magnet that was scary. Not the Monster Magnet who has videos made by Hype Williams.

Weedeater: Just one word: filth! More words? Pure filth! Like playing a Reo Speedealer record (does anybody remember that band?) on 33,33 RPM.

Maurice van der Heijden from Live XS has selected some of his must-see acts at Roadburn this year for you!

Roadburn 2011 sold out last year in only 15 minutes. Those who still want to see Black Mountain (Incubate 2010) or Dead Meadow can still buy a ticket for the Afterburner on Sunday, yet they will miss out on three days of brilliant music and unique bands.

Starting off with the Thursday, I’d recommend to see Godflesh for the first time in the Netherlands in ten years, playing the whole Streetcleaner album live. Other eyecatchers are Woven Hand and the old but gold Pentagram, who have been around since the early Black Sabbath days, yet are only now starting to get the recognition they deserve.

The Friday will be curated by the two members of Sunn O))), who will play as well which will make your trousers shake as usual, but the real banger should come from the classic band Winter. With only one album released in the early 90’s, they have influenced countless doom bands. In the Midi theater, which was added last year for the first time, the French band Year of no Light will play a second show with a special soundtrack for the horror movie Vampyr. After the brilliant album ‘Ausserwelt’, which they released last year, this show has every potential to be an absolute banger.

The guideline for Roadburn this year are reunited bands, like Swans who have picked up making music again last year with the new album My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky. The bleak and depressive tones of Michael Gira and co will certainly swallow your soul in the Main hall. Candlemass was scheduled to perform last year but due to the Icelandic volcano they couldn’t make it. Second chance at this Roadburn with a very special set. I also recommend to see the supergroup Shrinebuilder with members of Neurosis, Saint Vitus, Melvins and Om, who have already proven last year to produce some of the finest stonerdoom. Ufomammut is another band you should definitely not miss out on, as they will play their whole last year released Roadburn album of the year ‘Eve’!

Next week, Tilburg will be blackened by the bearded visitors of Roadburn, with a huge amount of great bands. I’m eargerly looking forward!

The highly influential industrial/experimental act The Young Gods will finally set foot on Dutch soil again, after the memorable performance at Roadburn in 2009. The band has been around for 25 years now, influencing some big names in the music scene such as David Bowie, Trent Reznor and Ministry. But after 25 years, The Young Gods still know how to suprise, as they’ve recently also released a live album with the experimental hip-hop artist Dälek. We are delighted to give away 2×2 tickets for this show which is seriously worth checking out.

Place of Skulls‘ ‘(ZXZW 2007) As A Dog Returns’ album was released last year in America, but never had a proper release in Europe. The band, based around Pentagram guitarist Victor Griffin, will release the album on April 4th by Volcom and will be distributed by ADA Warner. Place of Skulls will tour next month with The Gates of Slumber, including a stop at the Roadburn festival! Check out the full list of tour dates here.

Premonition 13 (although at that time just “Premonition”) played a very exclusive set at Incubate last year. The band, formed around Scott “Wino” Weinrich (Saint Vitus, The Obsessed, Shrinebuilder) didn’t even have any recordings at that time! But, the brand new, debut 7″ is now available and you can already check out both the songs on the Premonition 13 Facebook page. You can also find audio recordings of their set in Denmark on the same tour as Incubate! Wino is also set to perform at Roadburn 2011 with Shrinebuilder!

Here is some awesome high quality footage of Dream of an Opium Eater‘s performance at Roadburn last year. The post-metal band consists of band members from Killing Joke, Enslaved, Johnny Truant and Million Dead and have only played four performances so far. But they are working hard on a record right now and you can already check out the song ‘Operate’ on their myspace. Stay tuned for more information!

Frank Kimenai is present at the yearly SXSW festival, he will give us live blog updates from Austin! This is the third part in the series!

After 2 relatively easy days of gigging, Thursday was gonna be a busy one. Started out with lunch with the guys from the Philly Fest, a new festival in Philadelphia, that’s being organized by 2 independent promoters that are friends of my friend Shawn. Met them last year, and helped them out a bit a while back with contracts etc. They are cool dudes, and it was good to hear that the first edition of this film and music fest went well. Had an interesting talk about how to raise money for festivals. These guys are working with a lobbyist that searches for sponsors for them. He gets a 15% cut of the sponsor money after he hauls in $60.000,- The guys are also working together with this big stock broker from Philly, that invested $300.000,- in the fest together with a group of other investors. They bought “shares”  in the festival, and expect a return on investment of 19% in a year. Hope it will work out for them. It’s interesting to see the constructions that Americans have to raise money. I guess a litte entrepeneurism wouldn’t hurt Dutch festivals, but all in all, these constructions seem high risk…

After lunch, I went to Emo’s to hook up with my friends from Norwegian experimental doom metal band Altaar. Haven’t seen them in a while, so it was good meeting up and hanging out with Sten and they guys. We watched Kverletak, which was actually a pretty good show, with a lot of young kids dancing some sort of a cross breed between moshing and breakdancing. Funny to watch. Hung out with the guys for a while and found out that one of them is playing in a death metal band that I wanted to book for Incubate, called Obliteration, and the other one in a black metal band that I wanted to book, called One Tail, One Head. Small world, once again. After some beers, we decided to check out Beerland, where the Chaos in Tejas showcase was on. Great line-up with Altaar, Cult of Youth, Zola Jesus, Liturgy and a bunch of other cool bands playing. Too bad that nobody was really there during the Liturgy show. They ripped!

So, time to go see the The Hague showcase. After my blog post caused a lot of commotion last year, I was really curious to find out if this year went better. They chose a way better venue for it than last year. It was in Red Eyed Fly, a nice and smaller venue on Red River, not as posh and pretentious as the one of last year. I walked in during Pop Up Animal kids. It wasn’t that busy, about 70 people there I guess, mainly people from the Hague and the Netherlands, but also some US crowd. To be honest, I think the band was quite ok, but I still don’t think it makes any sense for a band of this size to play here. It just isn’t to a level that it makes a difference here yet. After that, The Deaf were on. They had a pretty decent crowd, I’d say about 150 people, and drew some friend from last year and the prior shows, some I guess you could say that they have some kind of a following here. Wich is good ofcourse. Music wise, I think the Deaf are an amazing bands, and if they try really hard, and hopefully connect with some local band, or a US lead in general, like a booking agent, or a manager, they might be able to do something in the States. There’s just so many bands over here that you really need to make a difference, otherwise it’s absolutely of no use to play here. Americans have enough mediocre bands of their own. My Norwegian friends liked it, by the way….  About the showcase. I still think it is well spent tax payers money. With all due respect for the bands, I think showcasing for a small city like The Hague, on a big festival like SXSW, is more like window dressing. I think the way to do it, is find a functional connection with a (couple of) strong partners, like labels, e-zines, local bands, or booking agency. Promote it together, involve each others network, and create synergy, because this way, it just doesn’t really make a difference, and the investment is not sustainable at all.

So, after the free The Hague beers, I went down to see Roky Erickson with Billy Gibbons. I saw Roky last december in Antwerp, which wasn’t all that good. He had the same band here with him, and they still weren’t all that good. Billy Gibbons only played 2 songs, and no solo’s or whatever. It weren’t the best 10 bucks ever spent, I guess I’m kinda done with seeing Roky playing live…too bad.

I went down to see John Maus, who I missed (but will see on an Incubated show in Tilburg), and saw a bit of Castanets, and briefly bumped into the guys from the Black Atlantic, who are doing extremely well here in the US. Geert, their main man, told me that they were doing a tune for a US TV series (that payed well!!) and that their video will be screened in about 10.000 Mac Donalds and Taco Bell restaurants here in the States for a week, because some marketing dude liked the music and the video. Good for them, altough I honestly must say that it wouldn’t be my choice to get screened at MacDonalds and Taco Bell, especially when you have strong punk roots, like the Black Atlantic guys….

Anyways, after that, I tried to get into a Pitchfork showcase, but it was way too busy. So I met up with my friend Stuart from the London noiseband Dethscalator, and we hung out at the Nanotear showcase in Barbarella. Nanotear is a management and booking agency from Portland, run by one of the nicest dudes you’ll ever meet in music industry, Nathan Carson. Him and the guys from YOB stayed at my place during the last Roadburn festival in Tilburg for a week, because they couldn’t fly out due to that Volcano. I got to know them pretty well, so it was really nice seeing all of them again. The showcase Nathan put up was really good. He got asked by the venue to do it, so he didn’t have to rent out the room or anything. A rarety here in austin. I saw Arabrot, Worm Ouroboros and the devestating doom metal from Yob, and it was all good! Especially Yob, they ripped the place apart. Hope they will make it to Europe in september, so we can book them on Incubate.

Last but not least, I saw Charles Bradley and the Menahan Street Band at Stubb’s. It was simply amazing. Mix the best of Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye and some James Brown, and you have Charles Bradley. Backed up by one of the best soul bands I’ve ever seen, this was simply the best show I’ve seen on the festival. Hope to see them, or any of the high quality Daptone records bands, real soon back home.

Der Blutharsch and Aluk Todolo, who both played at Incubate 2009, have set to release a split record on April 2nd! More information about the record:

“This LP is a collaboration between French masters of psychedelic doom, Aluk Todolo, and Austria’s, Der Blutharsch & The Infinite Church Of The Leading Hand, reincarnated from the ashes of the infamous band Der Blutharsch. Following the same concept as Der Blutharsch’s 7 inch collaboration with NYC`s psychedelic force, White Hills, both bands provided each other, this time with two, basic tracks to work on. Unfortunately Gomer Pyle has to pull out of this years Roadburn festival due to complications with the line-up, but the replacement comes from Dutch soil as well! And not very suprisingly, this will be Sungrazer, who just got of tour with Colour Haze and Lonely Kamel! Footage of the show in 013 last Sunday can be found above. We’re eager to see this band, who have released their awesome debut EP last year and played a show at the Pinkpop festival. Show them some support on April 17th at the Afterburner of Roadburn!

Sadly YOB had to reschedule their tour to September and pull out of this years Roadburn festival, but the Roadburn blog has posted very high quality footage of YOB’s performance at last years Roadburn. Essential material!

Liturgy preview the track ‘High Gold’ on Thrilljockey’s Soundcloud, which will be the opening track of the forthcoming Aesthetica album. Liturgy is one of USA’s most promissing black metal bands around at the moment and impressed us with a stunning show at Incubate 2010! The band will head out on a second European tour soon, including a performance at the Roadburn festival. Here’s the artwork for the new album as well:

This evening 013 will host the first edition of the Up in Smoke Roadfestival, a new festival for all the stoners among us. This first edition features three of the most promising bands from the German label Elektrohash Records.

Headlining this evening will be none other than one of Germany’s oldest stoner bands Colour Haze. Other bands playing this evening are Sungrazer and Lonely Kamel (also scheduled to perform at this years Roadburn festival). For fans of Santa Cruz (Incubate 2010).
