Last Monday we already told you about the Raw Art Fair that starts today in Rotterdam, but today it’s also the beginning of Re:Rotterdam. This art fair is organised by Galerie10 and wants to provide another kind of view of the modern art. By the way, if you are in Rotterdam this week go see Art Rotterdam & Object Rotterdam as well! Sunday is the last day to visit these fairs.

Raw Art Fair is a new art festival in Rotterdam that got his focus on photography, street-art and sculptures. Besides that the fair also got theatre, music performances and DJ’s. With 10.000 m2 the fair got space for established and international galleries, but new independent artists as well.

The festival takes place from 8 till 12 february in the Fenix Loods. According to the organization the fair is going to be fresh, new and something different as we used to.

This saturday two bands are performing at the music venue GROUNDS in Rotterdam. The two bands, Rubatong and Knalpot, are playing a show there it’s 12 euro’s and for CJP/Rotterdam holders it’s 10 euro’s. As you may know, the band Knalpot played at the Incubate Festival(then known as ZXZW festival) in 2009. The shows are starting at 20:30, so be there!

Members of Rubatong are from different musical directions. Guitarist René van Barneveld toured the globe with rock- and rapformation Urban Dance Squad. Bassist and improv Luc Ex played in the legendary punkband The Ex and Tatiana Koleva is a classical percussion artist. A mix of different styles makes them a divers band.

As we already said Knalpot performed at the ZXZW Festival in 2009, they also performed at Lowlands, Le Guess Who and Noorderslag. In april their EP ‘Sauce’ came out, and was received very well national and international. Knalpot was chosen as ‘Hollands Nieuwe’ by 3voor12 en they wrote: ‘Knalpot built monsters. De numbers are constructions, it’s like there are five musicians in the band’. The distorted and manipulated guitar sounds are being varieted with clean and sometimes manical percussion from this duo.

Rob Scholte, who was part of our piracy lecture at Incubate 2010 is opening his new expo this Saturday at Galerie Delta in Rotterdam at 14:00. You can see the expo from that day until September 17th.

This will be the first time ever Shangaan Electro show in Holland! Based on a Soweto street party, the live show will feature the stars of the Honest Jon’s compilation – producer/mastermind and vocalist Nozinja aka ‘Dog’ and the clown-masked Tshetsha Boys among them – alongside the fastest Shangaan dancers and fast-rising kwaito/house producer and Nozinja affiliate DJ Spoko (co-producer of DJ Mujava’s ‘Township Funk’).

Only two weeks left until Motel Mozaïque, the yearly music festival in Rotterdam and we have just received the news they have added Eklin to the line-up as well! Munchi (Incubate 2010), Dutch producer and blogger for Generation Bass had a seizure while on tour in the US. Because he has no medical insurance there he needs to get back to Holland ASAP. Do what you can to help out! From the Generation Bass blog:

The Netherlands-based DJ, producer, and “moombahton” guru known as Munchi is a recent obsession in some corners of SOTC — hear lots of examples of his adventurous, omnivorous style here — which makes news of his recent medical trauma all the more disturbing. Per NYC’s own DJ Ayres comes news that Munchi recently “had a seizure caused by an intracerebral hemorrhage” while on tour in Hawaii, subsequently spending nine hours in a coma and 11 days in the hospital. Now Ayres, alongside cohorts Dave Nada and Tittsworth, have started a fundraising drive in Munchi’s honor, aiming to get the poor guy a ticket back to Rotterdam (already done, it looks like), paying for the meds he’s needed so far, and so forth. The widget is below; the “hospital bills” estimate is probably way off, sadly, so do what you can.

He has no medical insurance in the US. His medication is expensive and he needs to get back to Rotterdam. Our goal is to pay for his ticket home, get our Hawaiian friends reimbursed for his meds and eventually pay for his hospital bills.

Jason Urick

1.Can you please introduce yourself?
Hello, my name is Jason Andrew Urick… I’m pleased to meet you!

2.Where are you at the moment?
I am sitting at my desk flanked by two laptops, one loaded with work and the other loaded with new music to finish. It should be pretty clear that I favor one laptop over the other.

3.Have you played in the Netherlands before and if so, what’s your view on or experience with the scene you’re operating in in The Netherlands?
I played in Amsterdam and Rotterdam with Ecstatic Sunshine this past January. I found the Netherlands to be an amazing place overall, but I was amazed at the amazing spaces we played. Both SMART and WORM are unlike anything that we have here in the USA and I wish that weren’t the case. In fact I liked WORM so much I will be back there for a week doing a residency in their electronic music studio to work on my new album and hopefully create a fresh new set for Incubate.

4.What can we expect of your gig at the Incubate Festival?
If all goes well a fresh set filled with wonderful tones from ancient analog synths courtesy of WORM in Rotterdam.

5.What are your plans for the (near) future?
Going to Las Vegas soon to visit my first Hyper-reality, then some midwest US shows with Zomes (Asa from lungfish), then off to the west coast before heading out your way. In between I plan to swim and see sun as much as possible.

Rhys Chatham (ZXZW 2008) will give a workshop/masterclass and performance at WORM Rotterdam later this month. Chatham is a classically-trained composer from New York. After he got out of conservatory, he was a concert producer at a place in Soho called the Kitchen, Rhys founded the music program and produced people like Maryanne Amacher, Robert Ashley, Philip Glass, Meredith Monk, Pauline Oliveros, and Steve Reich on the avant garde side of things; and Brian Eno, Robert Fripp and Fred Frith on the alternative rock side of things.

After a number of years as a concert producer, he got tired of producing other people’s music. Rhys had heard an early concert of the Ramones and was inspired by it, so he picked up electric guitar and made a composition called GUITAR TRIO in 1976/77 which combined the minimalist tendencies within which he had been working with a rock instrumentation and musicians.

He was introduced to electronic music and composition by Morton Subotnick in the late 60s, and in the early seventies he studied composition with La Monte Young and played in Tony Conrad’s early group. These guys are, along with Terry Riley, the founders of American minimalism; so Guitar Trio is a bit like Tony Conrad meets the Ramones! Also note his influence on Glenn Branca and Sonic Youth as well!

The masterclass will exist of two days of rehearsing & theory about the pieces (Guitar Trio and The Out of Tune Guitar No. 4) plus the performance in WORM on an event that is called POPULAR NOISE FOR THE MASSES on March 20th.

Practical:
In order to play in the concert, each guitarist (and the bass player) must bring a digital tuner and an electric guitar (and it would be good if the bass player would take a bass). Drums will be provided by WORM.

People that don’t play any of these instruments but would love to join…ask us and we’ll discuss with Rhys if he can use such an instrument (so don’t forget to tell us which instrument you play).

In het kader van de crisis worden de prijzen van WORM in Rotterdam op 24 maart 2009 vertienvoudigd. De prijs van een biertje zal bijvoorbeeld 17 euro gaan bedragen, een Natte van IJbier komt op 30 euro en Fritz Cola gaat voor 20 euro per flesje van de hand. Ook alle overige prijzen worden 10x zo hoog. WORM wil proberen om de prijs van het bier meer in balans te krijgen met de werkelijke kosten: transport, afvoer, personeelskosten, water etc. Om de shock voor het publiek enigszins te verzachten is de entreeprijs op 0 euro gesteld. Ook verleent WORM het publiek onbeperkt krediet om de drankjes te kunnen bekostigen en (voorlopig) op het huidige niveau te kunnen blijven drinken en consumeren. Het programma van de avond is de eerste in een nieuwe reeks, getiteld: ‘Systems Crash’. Het is een samenwerking tussen het Piet Zwart Institute/Media Design en WORM. De serie avonden gaat in op de vraag of de huidige maatschappij is vervallen in een eng geloof in Systeemdenken; financiële-, veiligheid-, afreken-, computersystemen; het zijn allemaal geconstrueerde werkelijkheden met hun eigen waarden en normen, soms mijlenver van de dagelijkse realiteit, maar kloppend met zichzelf. Het Systeemdenken krijgt zijn beslag in het denken in termen van project-management en bewoordingen als “het omvallen van het financiële systeem” terwijl er waarschijnlijk iets veel groters aan de hand is.

This nice 6 meter high leprechaun statue, designed by Paul Mccarty, was placed in a Rotterdam suburb a couple of years ago. People found it offensive, since the christmas tree it is holding, resembled a buttplug (hence the nickname), they said. Anyways, long story short, the leprechaun got replaced to a museum square, but some local city governement officials want it back in the public domain.

They are going to replace the leprechaun, which is a call against consumorism, to the Eendrachtsplein area. The city officials and local shop owners stated that the placing of the leprechaun “will generate new groups of consumers, finding the stores at Eendrachtsplein”. Are we the only ones who think this is rather paradoxal?
