Elk jaar in september komen er duizenden mensen van over de hele wereld naar Incubate. Een probleem voor deze bezoekers is het gebrek aan betaalbare overnachtingsmogelijkheden in Tilburg.
Daar willen we wat aan doen.

Samen met architectenbureau Buro 013 willen we lege kantoorpanden, leegstaande scholen, en andere niet-gebruikte gebouwen omvormen tot tijdelijke slaapplaatsen. Aan Tilburgers willen we vragen hierbij te helpen door tips te geven welke gebouwen hiervoor geschikt zijn. Via http://incu.at/leegstaan of hieronder kan iedereen tot 1 maart makkelijk tips doorgeven.

Frank Kimenai van Incubate: “Door leegstaande gebouwen in te zetten als tijdelijke verblijfplaats willen we niet alleen verloedering tegengaan maar ook een impuls aan de buurt geven. Niemand wordt blij van ongebruikt vastgoed. Daarnaast zullen ontmoetingen tussen internationale festivalbezoekers en de Tilburgers toenemen, wat de buurt levendig houdt.  Zo hebben de stad én de bezoeker er wat aan.”

He’s the king of DIY. With more than 300 cassettes released since the 60′s, he never made it to the charts. It turned him into a prophet in the independent scene. We booked R. Stevie Moore for Incubated 12 in Paradox, together with Harry Merry and Gary War (stream his entire set here!). The show was… well… err… how shall we call it… unconventional? Inimitable? Authentic? Uncompromising? Let’s call it a bizarre clash between music, performance art, spoken word, absurdism, pop music and Ariel Pink.

A sweaty ball of hair. That’s what Gary War looked like after finishing his show on the 12th edition Incubated. You can say what you want about him, but you can’t deny that he gave it all. His completely weirded-out feedback guitar strums, a programmed beat and completely blurred echo-y vocals made a psychedelic summer vibe on the winter day in Tilburg. This is music to close your eyes to and imagine you’re lying on a beach watching the sunset. Or maybe a summer day with a good spliff.

And we’re very happy that Gary War just confirmed that we’re allowed to release the audio for his show! So now you can eternally enjoy the psychedelic sounds of Gary War via our Soundcloud! You can find other artists there as well, such as that other Ariel Pink-protégé John Maus. And Dirty Beaches. And True Widow. And more.

Sigrid Calon graduated in 1993 at the academy of Tilburg. The first few years of her professional career she worked mostly as a designer. Since 2005 she chose to be a visual artist and works steadily on her artwork. Her art exists in the urge to explore, discover and create. Forcing new connections and the looking at the obvious from a different angle.

Research in identity is an important theme in her work. What is the essence, is there a new truth? Here she tries to arrange the chaos of possibilities and visualize it in clear, pure and fresh way. Aspects like intuition, ratio and humour are of importance.

The 2 lovely ladies that organised the We Eat INcubate, Joanne and Sanne, got great responses about the Eat-In. So they decided to make a new one: The Winter Eat-In! And you should all come. It’s on January 28th, at the Bomenlounge. You may know that place as the FAXX-building. And if you don’t know that either, it’s Dunantstraat 1 in Tilburg. It’s the street next to 013 Popcentre. It starts at 14:00.

If you don’t know what an Eat-In is, it’s simple. Everybody makes something to eat at home with at least one biological ingredient. You bring it to the Eat-In and put it on the table. And then everyone can pick whatever they want! Salads, desserts, carpaccio’s, you name it. So we hope to see you there with your best meal!

Marcel Dingemanse (1967, Breda, works and lives in Tilburg) assumes that silence manifests itself on the border of truth-thinking. Human being and its abandonment are important aspects in his video’s and photographic work.  The video work adopts its appearance from performance and film and is in all cases made in a simple way: one camera, one actor, mostly one cameraposition.

In his photographic work Dingemanse use pinhole technology, in which space, light and time with their elementary property is a main starting point. Sometime the photographs exists of portraits, but usually landscapes. The video’s and analog prints refer to romanticism and suggest a story about individual presence in a rough, inhuman landscape.

In November 2011 we posted a small preview of this record, but now you can hear it in full. Yeah they changed their name into the shorter Dodecahedron but the music is still just as chaotic, menacing, very well composed and executed as the first time you heard it.

Without a doubt the highlight of ZXZW 2008 (yes, before we were even called Incubate. That long ago.) was Sun Ra Arkestra, who did up to six shows that week.
Sun Ra was one of the main innovators in jazz. The Arkestra is his future dream and his ancient body. It never was as popular as jazz’s best-known big bands, but it did have a steady following and was highly regarded in jazz circles. It appeared on “Saturday Night Live”, played a Central Park concert with Sonic Youth and was named best big band in Down Beat magazine’s critics poll five times. Sun Ra influenced the whole contemporary music scene and was a true independent mind.

Now, while we were digging through our archive, we found the recording of the Tuesday show in Paradox. It’s such a great show that we couldn’t keep it to ourselves. So here it is. The complete show. One of the six and the only one we could find. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

The 14 organizations, Incubate is one of them, have collaborated and made a fresh and surprising program. A great way to start the new year with. The entrance is free and the doors are open at 13:30 on January 8th.

But what can you expect of Frisse Oren? You are going to be swept away by Amariszi‘s Balkanmusic from Dutch soil and be surprised by UIUIUI KOO with a mix of musical traditions. Third act on the bill are the Ping Pong Tactics, they mix different genres, from classical music to modern music.

There are various dance acts to keep you fascinated and you can decipher the mysteries of 013 with Indoor stadsgeheimen. You can enjoy all the different acts with some spectacular food from cookaholics. They make gastronomic taste sensation by using molecular cooking methods.

And if that’s not enough, Incubate presents a special guest! Topsecret! The only thing we will be telling you is: you do NOT want to miss it!

Frisse Oren is a big treat for the year 2012, with music, dance, food and of course having a great time! We hope to see you there, because we wouldn’t want to miss this great way to celebrate a new year!

Ping Pong Tactics

UIUIUI KOO

You might have seen him at the Open Source Expo at Incubate 2011. Just Quist is a painter working and living in Tilburg. The theoretical frame he works in might be eyebrow-rising and difficult to understand for contemporary art-dummies. Nevertheless, his paintings and collages are esthetically beautiful, but never boring. Graphic, well thought out compositions , put together with a playful palette of materials, shapes and colors.

A description about his work in his own words:

“I make painting-related objects.

Within my work I research and try to implement contemporary influences and techniques concerning the concretion and formal approach towards painting.
Working with digital techniques makes some works concrete.

A mirror, and perhaps with a lesser reflective surface glass, is used not more than its physical qualities and defines a framework within or about which a picture can evolve. Some mirrored surfaces are reduced in size and placed in evasive direction. Its interactive randomness opposes its sharp law-making edge.”

The Norwegian duo Humcrush and Norwegian vocalist Sidsel Endresen are coming to Tilburg on the 14th of December. Sidsel Endresen performed at Incubate 2010 and is now playing a show at the Paradox with Humcrush, existing of Thomas Stronen (drums/electronics) and Stale Storlokken (keyboards). The support act of that evening is SVER, a classical schooled band that is fascinated by Northern-Europe. SVER has three bandmembers, Bram Stadhouders (Altguitar/electronics), Aart Strootman(stereo baritoneguitar/samples) and Fons Toonen (Drums/percussion/dronetank). Bram Stadhouders and Aart Strootman both performed at the Incubate Festival.

This is a must see! A night full of Incubate artists at the Paradox, Tilburg on the 14th of December. Tickets are € 13,00 and it starts at 21:00, so be there!

We’re selling our Play Me, I’m Yours piano’s and here are the pictures of some of the pianos that are for sale. There will be 13 showpieces for sale that are playable. Next to that we’re selling 44 pianos that can’t be played anymore, but can be used for its parts, as props or for decoration. We’re selling them to raise money for a foundation that supports cancer patients: No Guts No Glory.

On the 8th of December, that’s this coming thursday, you can come and have a look at the pianos, pick your favourite and buy them right on the spot. We can deliver the piano you bought right at your door for a reasonable price.

If there are pianos left after 8 Dec we will auction them online at incubate.org till 15th of january 2012. The leftovers will be given to a collective of artists in Maastricht, the Netherlands.

It took a while, but we’ve collected and examined all the pianos of our very well-received project Play Me, I’m Yours. We had over a 100 pianos, so it takes some time to see which ones can or can’t be used.  And now it’s time to use them one last time. We’re selling them to raise money for a foundation that supports cancer patients: No Guts No Glory.

We’ve already donated 20 pianos to local schools, cultural organizations and community centers. So now there are 13 instruments left to sell, and 44 that can’t be played anymore, but might be used as props, decoration or to use (spare) parts.

So on December 6th (Tuesday) we’ll post pics of the playable pianos on inlog.org, and on December 8th (Thursday) people can come take a look and buy them at the spot. We offer the possibility to bring the piano to your place, for a reasonable fee.

R. Stevie Moore
R. Stevie Moore is the uncrowned king of Do-It-Yourself. The cult hero of the underground. He started out as a ‘musical diarist’ and he released all those ideas in the 70’s on his own R. Stevie Moore Cassette Club. More than 400 titles have been released to date on cassette, LP or CD. With such an uncompromising approach, it’s no wonder he never made it to the big league. He doesn’t care about that either. R. Stevie does what he wants. Which is releasing suprising, weird, catchy poptunes alongside recordings he made on the toilet. To call this ‘pop’ is too narrow for the wide range of music he makes. Even calling it ‘avant-garde’ doesn’t fit the mold created by Moore.
Last year, he got the attention of the blogs with a hilarious clip on Kickstarter, where he tried to get $10.000 to make a new cd and ultimately raised more than $11.000. Now, he’s on tour in Europe and performs exclusively in The Netherlands on Incubated! So this is a unique chance to see this legend perform live!

Gary War
There’s not much information to be found on the Internet about Gary War. He’s from Brooklyn, NY and played with Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti between 2005-2008. We know that. And we know he delivers some psychedelic lo-fi weird pop. Echoes, backwards samples, distortion, 80’s drumcomputer beats, undecipherable vocals, soft guitars, distortion and other noises define his sound. He calls it ‘goosestep’. We call it awesome. Some call it pop for experimental music fans. It’s a blurry tribute to… to… we have no idea to what actually. You’ll have to see Gary War and figure it out for yourself. If you dig John Maus and Ariel Pink, this is an act for you!

Harry Merry
Harry Merry (Harry den Hartog) is a multi-instrumentalist from Rotterdam and is one of the few Dutch artists who can be placed in the genre of ‘Outsider Music’. Merry is a distinct figure with his 70s hairdo and sailor suit. After years of locking himself in his room, he finally got out of his room and got his first gig in 1996 at a singer-songwriterfestival in Rotown Rotterdam. This was a huge succes with lots of positive criticism.  Soon after the first performace he toured around Europe and even did tours in America! His first CD was released eight years after his first performence and it’s called ‘Well.. Here’s another mess you’ve got me into‘. It took him three years to complete the album and it’s about his immediate surroundings. After the CD-release he performed at Noorderslag, de Grote Prijs and Popronde receiving positive reviews as well. In 2007 he started performing with a backing band ‘The Must‘, they recorded another CD, ‘Veronika‘.

A quick reminder that Incubate vs. Gifgrond is happening tomorrow at the Cultuurnacht Tilburg! Bands/Djs Sightings, Lucky Dragons, The Feeling of Love and Illum Sphere will be headlining the evening. The doors will open at 20.00 and the first show starts at 20.30. Incubate vs. Gifgrond is the only event during the cultuurnacht that has music until 2.00! The entrance fee is Pay What You Want, that means you can name your own price for the evening! Sightings (20.30 – 21.15)

According to our booker, Sightings is the best band from New York City. We’ll let you figure that out for yourself. But you have to admit, that this band is, to keep it streetwise, the shit. Fans of HEALTH, Pissed Jeans and Wolf Eyes should fall all over this. These New Yorkers (not exactly a new band, with 6 albums up their sleeves already) bring their noiserock with hints of no-wave and with a steady groove. So this is probably going to be loud. But Stereogum said about their liveshow ‘they’re one of the most intelligently uncompromising front folks in the scene’. And we believe them on their word.

Lucky Dragons (21.45 – 22.30)

For a unique liveshow, you should definitely check out Lucky Dragons. Don’t worry, we’re not going to drench you in weird experimental avant-garde drones. Although Lucky Dragons is experimental, it’s smooth, clear and at times even poppy. Like Animal Collective, Four Tet and chillwave-acts like Toro Y Moi. People who visited the shows of Sleep Party People, Daedelus, Picastro and Man Man on Incubate 2011 should check this out as well. Either way, a liveshow of these Americans is not to be missed. Combining live-music, video installions and audience participation, Lucky Dragons will create a world of their own at Incubate Vs. Gifgrond. And with over 18 releases in their backpack, they’ve got material enough to keep you entertained.

The Feeling of Love (23.00 – 00.00)

Space garage. That’s what they call it. So who are we to disagree? The Feeling Of Love started out in 2006, because ‘the postulate was to play on the garage blues and no-wave’s codes in order to find a primitive, repetitive and minimal idea of rock’n’roll’. So who are we to disagree? Thusfar, they released two LP’s (Petite Tu Es Un Hit & OK Judge Revival) that transformed their sound because ‘the blues and repetitive gimmicks that were the driving force to reach a trance state were being perverted by krautrock and psychedelism’ (who are we to disagree?), so they made kraut space garage since then. If you still have no idea what to expect, think: Velvet Underground, Suicide, Oblivians and a bit of Neu! thrown in.

Illum Sphere (00.00 – 01.45)

Let’s be honest: we’re extremely proud to have Illum Sphere to close our Incubate Vs. Gifgrond edition. Not because he was at the official Radiohead release party in NY a week ago. Not because he made an official remix for Radiohead’s cd amongst the likes of Caribou, Four Tet, Modeselektor and Jamie XX. No, we’re proud because we impute Illum Sphere a great future. His smooth, dark and bass-driven dub is well-crafted, unique and, well, amazing. While every blog on the Internet raves about the next big thing, Illum Sphere was mysteriously enough kept outside of the hype machine. Although he was recommended by Gaslamp Killer, Mary Ann Hobbs, Daedelus and Thom Yorke.
After afore-mentioned releaseparty, Illum Sphere’s star is rising fast. So make sure you’re there. This is probably the last time he is to be found is such a small location.

The cultuurnacht (Culture Night) in Tilburg is an annual event and this year it takes place on the 29th of October. The city of Tilburg will host all kinds of different music/art/dance/film throughout the city and it’s venues. As you may know Incubate is an independent culture organization, therefore we’re is hosting an evening during the cultuurnacht. Together with Gifgrond  we bring acts like Illum Sphere, Lucky Dragons, The Feeling of Love and Sightings for your enjoyment. Beside those, there will be a book presentation by Koen Delaere. The doors open at 20.00 and the first act is lined up at 20.30, the evening will last until 2.00! The address is Gasthuisring 19G, Tilburg and the doorprice is Pay What You Want! Of course you all know that at the upcoming Incubated edition Dirty Beaches perfoms (you better!).  And together with Popronde, we made sure that Traumahelikopter and Bebe Fang are there as well. But Dirty Beaches has a new video for his track ‘Lone Runner’. You can watch it below. The EP with the same name arrives later this year.  More information about Incubated 11, can be found here.

The Italian born Fabio Tedde came to Holland to participate on the Play Me, I’m Yours project. Originally he is from London, England and play/compose musical pieces to entertain the varied audience he has over there. A little history about Tedde and you will get what he liked about the project. When he started playing in London in 2001, he went to all the tourist spots and quickly became involved with the Transport for London Music Network. This network supports emerging artist by giving them a platform to start their work.

Fabio made a 7 minute movie where he shows all his pictures taken on tour through Tilburg. He played on 80 piano’s, travelled 200 km via bike and visited 16 cities to play the paino’s of the Play Me, I’m  Yours track. The song you will hear during the movie, is the song ‘A Place For All’. Enjoy!

10. We turned Hall Of Fame into a hardcore fest with the likes of No Turning Back, Oathbreaker, Run With The Hunted and Trial. New Morality fills up the ‘TBA’-spot in the timetable.

The afterschool avantgarde project has been a great success far! We’ve had people like Felix Kubin (photo above) and Sylvain Chauveau working with the kids as you can see, but we now have some audio as well!

The kids over at Basisschool Andreas (primary school in Tilburg) had a Casio workshop and we’ve uploaded two recordings of this afternoon on Soundcloud!
