[Listen] Incubate’s 100 Best Songs Of The Year 2011

After we saw the Dutch music/media site 3voor12 put together their Song Of The Year 2011, we thought that’s the only list left we didn’t pay attention to. So we made one.

Incubate’s Song Of The Year 2011 is a Youtube playlist with 100 songs. We didn’t make a top 100, because we didn’t know how to compare the drones of Natural Snow Buildings to the indiepop of Metronomy, to name two. So it’s no top 100 list, but it’s a nice way to get to know some music that the media kinda forgot about most of the time. We only had one rule while putting this together: only 1 song per band/act.

You cannot possibly like EVERY song here. It ranges from the death-metal of Ulcerate to the happy-pop of Retro Stefson. From the ambient of Tim Hecker to the indierock of The War On Drugs. And from the acoustics of Stranded Horse to the blunt hardcore of Trash Talk. Luckily for you, there’s a skip button, when you click ‘play all’

Sacramento’s Trash Talk released a new video to their song ‘Burn Alive‘ from their oncoming EP ‘Awake‘, which is to be released in just 6 days! We’re a big fan of this band since their 2008-show on ZXZW, where they absolutely tore down Little Devil. So you betcha that we’re reserving some space for this band on our blog.

Clocking in just under 2 minutes, it’s pure fucking mayhem all the way through. Their hardcorepunk is still intact, but it sounds like they are rock ‘n rolling things up á la Cancer Bats. Anyway, it’s awesome. Listen to it. And buy their EP. Now.

[SXSW Report] The big circus… Inlog.org blogging live from SXSW, Part II

Frank Kimenai is present at the yearly SXSW festival, he will give us live blog updates from Austin! This is the second part in the series, more to follow over the next days.

Today started out with one of the most important actions of the festival. Getting a bicycle to cruise the festival. Distances are much bigger than in Europe here, eventhough the festival is concentrated on 2 streets. There’s also a lot of venues that are not in the downtown area. Actually, they seem te get more important each year.

So, I actually got prepared and made a schedule. This is absolutely necessary here, not to get lost in the enormous amount of venues and bars. It’s just simply too much. At 8 pm I started at the Windish agence house in east. Esben and the Witch were playing, we’d love to book the on Incubate this year. I expected a huge line, because the festival is getting busier every year, but there was actually nobody there…and it was a 500 capacity venue… Fortunatly, it got a bit busier during the show, which was pretty good. After that, I wrnt to see EMA. Nice singer, but the band could be a bit more on edge. Again, there were barely 30 people there by the way.

As I made an attempt to cycle through 6th street, I noticed how much SXSW is also a big event for non music industry people. It was like a regular night out at a strip in Tilburg or Eindhoven, with a shitload of live music, and an even bigger shitload of stupid people. I wouldn’t really want to showcase on 6th street, the atmosphere is way less intersting as Red River.

I rode down to Emo’s to see OFF! and the Bad Brains. It was busy as hell and there were quite a bunch of ‘famous’ peole, like Phil Anselmo, Eyehategod dudes, some guy from Fishbone and more. The line up was amazing. Trash Talk, OFF!, Bad Brains, Black Lips and Talib Kweli. Bad Brains were awesome. Started out with 5 songs of pure high energy hardcore and after that, the dub kicked in. I smoked some weed with the Cerebral Ballzy dudes, I guess the best way to see Bad Brains.

After Emo’s I walked into Red7 to see Small Black but that got delayed and I saw Cave Singers instead. Good band, on Secretly Canadian. Went down to Mohawk after that, saw Baths (good, intelligent nerdy hiphop on Anticon) and Curren$y, which was sort of cool as well, but not really my cup of tea.

All in all, it was a nice but slow start of the festival, which is getting bigger by the year. Talking to some locals, they said they hated it more and more every year. It is a really big circus, which is fun, if you choose your own path…

Touring Europe for the second time within one year, spreading the walking disease further and further, we thought the time was right to subject the guys in Trash Talk to a cross-examination. Our paths crossed at this year’s edition of the ZXZW festival in Tilburg, so after their manic live performance in The Little Devil, singer Lee and drummer Rashod were eager to answer some questions.
