The Belgian black metal act Gorath (ZXZW 2008) played at Dynamo last weekend alongside the likes of Taake and Vulture Industries. There’s some quality footage of a cover they did from ‘Sworn To The Dark’ from Watain (also ZXZW 2008). Enjoy!

We’ve had Watain playing ZXZW already in 2008 (see movie) and with the release of last year’s album ‘Lawless Darkness’ they seem to attact a bigger and bigger audience with every tour to spread their orthodox, satanic blasphemous black metal! Supporting them will be the Swedish “suicidal” black metal act Shining, based around the notorious Kvarforth (who’s banned from the 013 for some bad behaviour) and Aosoth from France.

You might not tell by the looks of these guys, but according to frontman Erik Danielsson, black metal legends Watain are all about peace, love and understanding. Watain, who have played at ZXZW 2008, have recently released their new album Lawless Darkness and are featured in a cover story in next month’s Decibel Magazine. Read an excerpt of the interview here below.

Decibel: What are WATAIN‘s needs?

Danielsson: “WATAIN exists out of a yearning to create music in honor of the heart of black metal, the dark side if you want to put a simple name on it. For us, who are the spawn of that dark side, it’s like a patriot who feels the great need to write songs for his mother country. My heart is filled with the passion to try to channel the great and incredible things I have become a part of in my life. To me, it’s simple and pure. I do it out of love.”

Decibel: Love for Satan.

Danielsson: “Yeah. To put it simple. [Laughs] The saying, ‘Peace, love and understanding’ is very adaptable to WATAIN in this sense: The peace is total death. The love is the love that we have for our gods. The understanding is the wisdom, the flow of intelligence that Satanism represents. Peace, love and understanding, man.”

As you might know, ZXZW hosts a very grim and frostbitten “Black Arts” program this year. We have a photo exhibition of Peter Beste, live show by Watain, and visual arts bij Erik Smith amongst others. Unfortunately, Glorior Belli, who were scheduled to play ZXZW, had to cancel since they are touring with Impiety an Spearhead in september. Jim, know from acts such as Urfaust and The Devil’s Blood, has put up a show for these bands in Arnhem on september 3rd. Go check it out, and spread the word about the ZXZW Black Arts program!

Arlette is producing our black metal project with artists like Watain and Peter Beste. Today she told us she’s afraid of the roundabout of the Tilburg fun fair.
