Our homeboy Koen Delaere is branching out to South America these days. You might know this guy because he’s played a pivotal role in getting our visual arts program together in the last couple of years. Besides that he’s one of the guys behind the great Whatspace blog and the Whatbar nights we did together in the last couple of years, combining art with weird music, punk and metal.

He’s also an accomplished painter in his own right, working on the crossroads of abstract and figurative painting, with bright neon and fluoride colors and deep wavey patterns. He was lucky enough (and skilled enough of course..) to get selected for the great festival NOVA in Sao Paulo, Brazil. If you are around or in that neighbourhood, go check it out, because it’s definitely worth it. Info below!

Michiel Ceulers (Whatbar) ‘WHEN _______ BECOMES FORM’ exhibition

One of our Whatbar participants, Michiel Ceulers from Belgium, has a new project running in Zurich! Description taken from the Whatspace website:

“Michiel Ceulers’ paintings investigate the medium of paint. At first, these inconvenient, difficult to read, uncompromising and very diverse paintings are hard to grasp but on a second and third look, these small, rather dirty paintings are very precise and sharply handled, cheekily referencing previous historical styles.

Jostling for position in his studio, they are treated roughly and poorly, they lean amongst and against each other (whilst some are still wet) producing scarring and marking. The dirty marks, thumb-prints, ripped and badly stretched canvases are integral to the work. Ceulers is not interested in beautiful or representational pictures, he is simply analysing colour-shapes, brushstrokes, and light. Once his paintings have left the confines of the studio, they cease to be in a constant state of flux and finally become.”

The exhibition is running until May 28th.

Cam Deas is an English, predominantly 12 string, guitarist born in London and currently residing in Sheffield. He has released a string of CDr’s on various independent labels, along with a solo LP and split LP with fellow solo guitarist Spoono on Blackest Rainbow, and most recently an improvised 7″ on The Great Pop Supplement. Deas plays his guitar with such raw urgency and crisp production; it’s playing that is hard to define. Deas will spend nearly 10 minutes on the opening track luring you into a quiet and beautiful world before he really unleashes the picking attack on his guitar.

Michiel Ceulers @ Whatbar # 8

Michiel Ceulers (B) makes paintings that investigate the medium of paint. Ceulers produces modest, greasy paintings that live with him; they are his belongings. Hester Scheurwater @ Whatbar # 8

Hester Scheurwater’s work consists of short films, video performances and installations which try to express desires, fears and obsessions in alarming matter. Through an intuitive way of film making an intimate inner picture is depicted. These pictures show daydreams (fantasies/nightmares) which in a
fragmented manner make a suggestive picture tale visible in which grotesque doll-like women show their incapacity to contact with the outside world. The woman as an object, isolated and absent sometimes thrown back on basic animal instincts “female behaviour”.

Alistair McClymont @ Whatbar # 8

Alistair McClymont (UK) graduated from the Royal College of Art Sculpture School in 2005, he works in sculpture, photography and video. His work investigates the romanticism with which contemporary cultural products have been invested. He uses well-known commodities, brands and logos as recurring themes: a recent series of work has been based around the imagery of the Evian mountain, for instance.

In his most recent work, ‘The Dark Side of the Rainbow’, McClymont has extended his observation of cultural production to the cult status of film and music, merging the film ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and the Pink Floyd album ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’, in accordance with a popular urban myth that the two can be played in perfect synchronisation. The relationship between Dark Side of the Moon and The Wizard of Oz has been the subject of a long standing urban myth / conspiracy. A search on google reveals the interest in this subject. Even Turner Classic Movies made this conspiracy a topic on their site, The Dark Side of Oz.

As a preheater for the Whatbar #6 this saturday in Tilburg tonight, and the DJ-gig of the official suppliers of smooth YACHT ROCK tunes The Boys Of Summer, Inlog will give you some tribute videos of the King of Yacht Rock, Michael McDonald. Some impersonations are pretty lame (after the break), but some are quite funny. Like the above one. It’s some sort of a V/Vm kind of revision of ‘Sweet Freedom’ with altered lyrics about taking a shit on a toilet… Hmmm…

After the break the failed one. Which proves that even with a big budget, a good impersonation can go wrong.

Whatnight #2: Who What Where?

Thursday 17 September around 16:00 the official opening of Incubate (yeah, the festival is than already five days in action, but that’s how official openings work, apparently) will take place in the form of Whatnight #2 @ Duvelhok. Vaast Colson and Dennis Tyfus were invited by Whatspace for this event. They will do two performances that showcase their anarchistic, and free form mode of work.

The day after Incubate they will drive around Tilburg giving a voice to their feelings of mourning because this year’s festival has come to an end.

We can’t wait!

Misschien ken je Anita en Pleuni van Whatspace. Ze stonden gisteren in NRC. “Op de exposities in Den Bosch en Breda heeft de directie een performance verboden en een kunstwerk met een dode goudvis verwijderd. Anita Hrnic en Pleuni van Tongeren studeerden in Breda af met de performance Bees 2009. Ze lagen daarbij in een glazen kooi en wasten elkaar met honing terwijl het publiek in een lokaal met levende bijen toekeek. De directie had volgens adjunct-directeur Jeroen Chabot vooraf als voorwaarde gesteld dat de veiligheid van de bijen, het publiek en de twee kunstenaars gewaarborgd moest zijn. De school wilde niet dat de examenexpositie schade zou oplopen door een reactie van dierenactivisten.

Chabot. „Met de bijen ging het goed en het publiek was goed beschermd met imkerkleding. Maar één van de studenten viel flauw, dus kon het onder deze omstandigheden – het was erg warm – niet doorgaan.” Hrnic en Van Tongeren zijn verbolgen. „Ik ben niet tijdens de performance, maar tijdens de examenuitreiking flauwgevallen”, zegt Hrnic. „Als de directie zich zorgen maakt over onze gezondheid, waarom hebben ze er dan geen dokter bijgehaald?” Ze trokken zich niets aan van het verbod en hebben zaterdag en zondag hun performance uitgevoerd tot de directie ingreep. De adjunct-directeur stelt dat het fysiek en geestelijk welzijn van de studenten een verantwoordelijkheid van de academie is.” Lees meer in NRC.

Whatbar #4 performance of Microphonics released

A last minute invitation to perform at the Whatbar #4 blog event in The Hague resulted in an impromptu drone piece extending Dirk Serries’ Microphonics concept into more epic and harmonic territory. Significantly less straightforward than the music on his debut album, the twenty-two minutes of Microphonics VI are built upon subtle shifts and intricate thematic ideas. Listening back to the recording, captured straight to tape by Olivier Nijs during the event, tonefloat and dirk serries decided to release the performance in its pure state and as a snapshot of this singular moment in time offering a promising glimpse of future volumes in this ongoing series of guitar resonances.

The vinyl is now available for pre-order.
