You didn’t expect this did you? Well, we’re sending out a press release about our complete line-up in a few, so we thought we might as well share the last additions to our lineup for Incubate 2011 now!

But first the bad news, you might as well have read it somewhere but Wise Blood couldn’t get their EP released in Europe on time and sadly decided to cancel their European tour, including their performance at Incubate.

The good thing is we have booked Mueran Humanos from Argentina, who will play instead of Wise Blood. We have also added Kool Thing to our lineup, who are on tour with Austra.

And finally the names for Whatspace’s Let’s Jam are finally announced! You can find the whole list of artists below.

Newly added to the music program:

Mueran Humanos – 18/9

post-punk, experimental, minimal wave
Expand to view more info

Mueran Humanos is an post-punk/experimental band with Carmen Burguess (machines and voice) and Tomás Nochteff (bass and voice). Together they create haunting, pschodistorted soundscapes filled with strange harmonies, electronic drums and spacy effects. Which isn’t that surprising with a bandname that translates to ‘Die humans’. Good fun for pessimists.

Kool Thing – 16/9

indie, dream pop, noise rock
Expand to view more info

Kool Thing is named after the first major label single by Sonic Youth. And while there’s a bit of noisy guitartones to be found here as well, it’s not as violent as Sonic Youth could be. It’s more dreamy synth-laden reverb pop that will suit your needs if you’re looking for soothing melodies with a touch of melancholy. Beautifully honest music. If you’re here for Austra, EMA and the likes, this could be your new addiction.

Whatspace’s Let’s Jam:

Whatspace / Let’s Jam – 12-18/9

Expand to view more info

Bayrol Jimenez @ Art Amsterdam 2011

Last week it was time for Art Amsterdam and Merijn Denkers (Incubate) was there for a review! You can find the review underneath here (in Dutch) and some more photo’s after the jump!

One of our Whatbar participants, Michiel Ceulers from Belgium, has a new project running in Zurich! Description taken from the Whatspace website:

“Michiel Ceulers’ paintings investigate the medium of paint. At first, these inconvenient, difficult to read, uncompromising and very diverse paintings are hard to grasp but on a second and third look, these small, rather dirty paintings are very precise and sharply handled, cheekily referencing previous historical styles.

Jostling for position in his studio, they are treated roughly and poorly, they lean amongst and against each other (whilst some are still wet) producing scarring and marking. The dirty marks, thumb-prints, ripped and badly stretched canvases are integral to the work. Ceulers is not interested in beautiful or representational pictures, he is simply analysing colour-shapes, brushstrokes, and light. Once his paintings have left the confines of the studio, they cease to be in a constant state of flux and finally become.”

The exhibition is running until May 28th.

This Saturday at 15:00 the exposition The Spur of the Moment will take place in Nest in Den Haag/The Hague. Here’s a short description about the exposition:

“The Spur of the Moment is a Nestarchy project in colaboration with Koen Delaere. Koen Delaere is one of the driving forces behind ‘Whatspace’, an artist initiative from Tilburg without a fixed location or programme. Whatspace organises ad hoc events and exhibitions that occur where the Whatspace-members reside. Projects are realised at short notice and on a whim.”

This Saturday Incubate will curate a stage at the Europe Mania Festival. The festival takes place in Pécs, Hungary from the 6th until the 8th of may. On may 8th Incubate will host the Brewery stage.

The people of Whatspace led by Koen Delaere have conducted a very special poster project entitled Making Do: Uses and Tactics. In this project the format of the poster was interpreted in the light of French culture sociologist Michel de Certeau’s philosophy on modernity. In his book ‘L’invention du quotidien. Vol. 1, Arts de faire’ Certeau argues that the gap between the homogeneity of the major scientific, political or philosophical stories and variety of everyday practices are unbridgeable. According to Certeau there are two possible reactions to this problem: to either emphasize this gap or to pretend that it does not exist. In the latter solution life is brought back to simple abstractions. Certeau calls this ‘strategy’. In emphasizing the gap one searches for operations that theme this gap. This is what Certeau calls ‘tactics’.

The format of the poster usually functions as a strategy. In Making Do the artists of Whatspace have approached the format of the poster in a tactical way. In doing so, they have not let homogeneity be their guide, but rather tried to emphasize the heterogeneity of images and their production methods. This approach has led to a large collection of posters made by Koen Delaere, Bas van den Hurk, Marjolijn Dijkman, Piet Dieleman and MFA AKV/ St. Joost students Bruno Listopad, Lorelinde Verhees, Ian de Ruiter, Thomas I’anson and Manuel Sanchez.

The results are exhibited at the BKKC office in Tilburg until june 6th 2010. This weekend however, a selection of the Whatspace poster exhibition can be admired at Europe Mania, Hungary as well!

American director and photographer Cary Loren was part of the band Destroy All Monsters
An anti-rock band founded in direct reaction to the pretensions and complacency of 1970s pop music, the Detroit-based noise deconstructionists Destroy All Monsters earned their greatest notoriety at the peak of the punk era, thanks to a lineup that included alumni of the MC5 and the Stooges. Named after a cult-favorite Japanese monster movie, Destroy All Monsters was formed in 1973 by art students Niagara (a former model), Jim Shaw, Mike Kelley, and Cary Loren; influenced by everything from underground comix to film noir to psychedelia, the highly visual group was experimental and abrasive, with Niagara’s Betty Boop-vocals and squealing violin cresting atop waves of trance-like sonic dementia.
Jason Ankeny @ allmusic.com

For The Destroyed Room on the 5th of March Cary made a special movie that he filmed in the ruins of Detroit and he will participade in a musical performance with some local musicians from Tilburg.
The line up will be:

Cary Loren
Ries Doms – drums (ex Spades, Powervice, Bars, now in Hooghwater)
Frank Kimenai – bass (Anaphylactic Shock)
Michiel Eikenaar – vocals (Anaphylactic Shock, Nihill)

To quote Cary:

“the performance will sound something like ambient free jazz and
doom metal. I am going for hellish Buddhist sounds in a bleak and empty landscape. I don’t know what to listen to maybe death metal + Don Cherry+ Alice Coltrane.”

Sounds promising!

The Destroyed Room/Whatspace
Perron 58, Tilburg
5th of March 20.00

Photocopies, light bulbs and magnifying lenses appear throughout Lee’s Untitled (Can Sculpture) series. With these materials, Lee explores the nature of the photographic image. In this work the power of a picture to create a strong somatic and psychological reaction is dissembled through the devices of image production: a photo that has been created with a lens and light is viewed through both a light bulb and looking glass. By reducing a sensual image to its bare physical mechanics, Lee illustrates a kind of technical porn, exposing both instinctive attraction and its emotional detachment.
On the 5th of March Paul Lee is contributing to the Whatspace project The Destroyed Room.

Kimberly Clark makes sculptures and installations refering to escapades they stage on the street. Founded in rotterdam in 2005, Iris van Dongen, Josepha de Jong and Ellemieke Schoenmaker live and work together under the designation Kimberly Clark. On the 5th of March Kimberly Clark is contributing to the Whatspace project The Destroyed Room.

Kimberly Clark plays with her own emotions…
In a hyper way the artist’s collective uses clichés surrounding them: sex, party, violence, art, mythology, poetry…
Kimberly Clark mixes all these ingredients to installations, in which they express their love-hate relationship with the world they live in.
It’s ‘Art with pleasure’ created with passion.

Kimberly Clark makes sculptures and installations refering to escapades they stage on the street.
During those actions they create sceneries moving between clumsiness and seriousness, in a complex world in which beautyideals and behaviourcodes define acceptation.
For example the work ‘crusade Rotterdam’, is based on two women climbing to the top of a heap of construction waste lying in the street. One of the women is carrying a piece of beam, the other one ironcurtain rails. The composition of the women is that of a crucifix. The piece refers to history as it was inspired by the painting of Delacroix ‘Freedom guiding the people’, but at the same time it refers to ‘styling of uselessness’.

With feeling for self ridicule KC flirts with an image language wich is raugh but most important, humoristic. In a way you could say the installations are autobiographical. At least the artists can identify with the subjects they chose. That explains why the collective often takes ‘the woman’ as their point of departure. The contradiction between the beauty of women and the rawness of her situation creates vulnerability but at the same time female heroine and power.

Stills from “Banzai Detroit,” a film in progress by CARY LOREN, developed as a response to Jeff Wall’s famous photo “The Destroyed Room” – an early studio set-up and one of his first transparency light-box images. The film is part of an art project that will be screened in Tilburg, Netherlands in the spring.

The film spirals outward around Detroit locations – beginning with homes and apartments; living areas to institutional sites; schools, airports, police stations, business, parks, etc..

At each site images are burned including copies of Wall’s ‘Destroyed Room’, icons of Detroit culture, and personal history. The work will be an index of material ruins, cultural debris and autobiography – the post-destruction of an urban wasteland.

Transitions between sites have short clips of Japanese ritual suicide, (Seppuku or Hara Kiri) and the kamikaze, taken from classic and trashy Samurai films and stock footage. The final work can be projected as a background for a live noise performance. It will also be narrated by homeless people interviewed throughout the city, some who currently are living in its ruins.

project by WHATSPACE, coming to Berlin February 26, and to Tilburg March 6…
